    Combining remote-sensing data with in-situ observations to achieve a comprehensive 3D reconstruction of the ocean state presents significant challenges for traditional interpolation techniques. To address this, we developed the CLuster Optimal Interpolation Neural Network (CLOINet), which combines the robust mathematical framework of the Optimal Interpolation (OI) scheme with a self-supervised clustering approach. CLOINet efficiently segments remote sensing images into clusters to reveal non-local correlations, thereby enhancing fine-scale oceanic reconstructions. We trained our network using outputs from an Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM), which also facilitated various testing scenarios. Our Observing System Simulation Experiments aimed to reconstruct deep salinity fields using Sea Surface Temperature (SST) or Sea Surface Height (SSH), alongside sparse in-situ salinity observations. The results showcased a significant reduction in reconstruction error up to 40% and the ability to resolve scales 50% smaller compared to baseline OI techniques. Remarkably, even though CLOINet was trained exclusively on simulated data, it accurately reconstructed an unseen SST field using only glider temperature observations and satellite chlorophyll concentration data. This demonstrates how deep learning networks like CLOINet can potentially lead the integration of modeling and observational efforts in developing an ocean digital twin.

    Physical and chemical trace metal speciation are important for our understanding of metal cycling and potential toxicity to marine life. Trace metals can behave differently in diffusion processes or particle-solution interactions and have different bioavailabilities depending on their physical and chemical forms, which often depend on redox conditions. Here we investigated dissolved (< 0.2 µm) and soluble (< 0.02 µm) concentrations of Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, Cu, V, Mo, U, Cd, and As in oxic and suboxic deep-sea sediments of the central equatorial Pacific Ocean. Vanadium, Mo, U, As, and Cd showed no significant concentration differences between their dissolved and soluble forms, suggesting that they are present as inorganic ionic species or organic complexes in the truly dissolved or small colloidal fraction. In contrast, the colloidal fraction (> 0.02 µm < 0.2 µm) of Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu increased with depth in oxic pore waters and Fe had the largest but variable colloidal pool. Soluble Mn, Co, and Ni were released in the uppermost 2-4 cm in the sediment because of reductive dissolution. The increasing colloidal fraction with depth suggests a decrease in the concentration of small organic ligands with depth, that are abundant in the surface sediment pore waters, and instead an increasing importance of larger (> 0.02 µm) inorganic nanoparticles and colloids such as Mn and Fe (oxyhydr)oxides that control Mn, Fe, and Co cycling at depths > 10 cm. The distribution of Ni and Cu cannot be exclusively explained by inorganic nanoparticles and a shift from low to larger high molecular weight organic ligands might occur. These findings provide new insights into trace metal distributions in the dissolved phase, highlighting the diversity of metal complexes and the need to incorporate these in future calculations of benthic metal fluxes and ecotoxicity assessments, especially in oxic pore waters.

    Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for phytoplankton growth, but its scarcity in seawater limits primary productivity across much of the ocean. Most dissolved Fe (DFe) in seawater is complexed with Fe-binding organic ligands, a poorly constrained fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which increase Fe residence time and impact Fe bioavailability. Here, we present the conditional concentration (LFe) and binding-strength (log KFe'Lcond) of Fe-binding ligands in the Western Tropical South Pacific (WTSP) Ocean during the GEOTRACES TONGA cruise (GPpr14). The transect crossed the Lau basin, a region subject to shallow hydrothermal Fe inputs that fuel intense diazotrophic activity, the oligotrophic South Pacific gyre, and the Melanesian basin. Organic speciation was analyzed by competitive ligand exchange adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-AdCSV) using salicylaldoxime at 25 µM. We found a high mean LFe of 5.2 ± 1.2 nMeqFe (n = 103) across the entire transect, predominantly consisting of intermediate strength L2 ligands (84%; mean log KFe'Lcond of 11.6 ± 0.4), consistent with humic-like substances. DFe correlated with the humic-like component of the fluorescent DOM (HS-like FDOM), yet the electroactive Fe-binding humic-like substances (LFeHS) accounted for only 20 ± 13% of LFe in the mixed layer and 8 ± 6% in deep waters. Ligands were in large excess compared to DFe (mean excess ligand eLFe = 4.6 ± 1.1 nMeqFe), suggesting poor stabilization of DFe inputs. High LFe (up to 9 nMeqFe) in samples close to hydrothermal sites could be due to detoxification strategies from plankton communities toward hydrothermally-fueled toxic trace metals other than Fe, with an apparent dilution of the DOM from the Lau basin into neighboring regions. We also observed a different peak potential of the Fe salicylaldoxime complex detected by CLE-AdCSV between the Lau and Melanesian basins, and between surface and deep waters. To our knowledge, this change in potential has not previously been reported; whether this represents a novel detection of specificities in DOM composition merits further investigation. Competition between Fe and competing metals for ligand binding sites could favor DFe oxidation and precipitation near hydrothermal vents and explain the absence of strong Fe stabilization in the WTSP.

    Rhodaliids, a specific family of siphonophores inhabiting the benthic zone, have remained enigmatic due to their rarity and elusive nature. These unique organisms, primarily found in open ocean habitats, exhibit distinctive features and are characterized by complex structures. During the Red Sea Decade Expedition, two rhodaliid specimens were collected at the sea bed at water depths of 438 and 495 meters. Regardless of challenges in specimen preservation, detailed morphological analysis revealed unique characteristics. Genetic analysis, employing the 16S rRNA marker, revealed one specimen closely related to Thermopalia taraxaca, while the taxonomic traits of this specimen suggested the identification of Archangelopsis jagoa. While most of the morphological features of the second specimen were also very similar to A. jagoa, some differences in coloration suggest the discovery of either an unusual colour variant or a potential new species within this genus. Notably, this study reports the first sequencing of A. jagoa. This species demonstrated a capacity to thrive in low-oxygen environments, challenging conventional assumptions about their habitat requirements. Despite difficulties in specimen handling and genetic analysis limitations due to a lack of comprehensive data, this research sheds light on the elusive world of benthic rhodaliids.

    Diazotrophs regulate marine productivity in the oligotrophic ocean by alleviating nitrogen limitation, contributing to particulate organic carbon (POC) export to the deep ocean. Yet, the characterization of particles composing the sinking POC flux has never been explored in such ecosystems. Moreover, the contribution of the direct gravitational export of diazotrophs to the overall flux is seldom assessed. Here we explore the composition of the sinking POC flux in a hot spot of N 2 fixation (the western sub-tropical South Pacific) using polyacrylamide gel-filled traps deployed at two stations (S05M and S10M) and three depths (170 m, 270 m, 1000 m) during the TONGA expedition (November-December 2019). Image analyses of particles collected in the gels was used to classify them into 5 categories (fecal aggregates, phytodetrital aggregates, mixed aggregates, cylindrical fecal pellets, and zooplankton carcasses). Fecal aggregates were the most abundant at both stations and all depths and dominated the flux (average of 56 ± 28% of the POC flux), followed by zooplankton carcasses (24 ± 19%), cylindrical fecal pellets (15 ± 14%) and mixed aggregates (5 ± 4%), whereas phytodetrital aggregates contributed less (<1%). Since N isotope budgets show that export is mainly supported by diazotrophy at these stations, these results suggest that the diazotroph-derived N has been efficiently transferred to the foodweb up to zooplankton and fecal pellets before being exported, pleading for an indirect export of diazotrophy. However, random confocal microscopy examination performed on sinking particles revealed that diazotrophs were present in several categories of exported particles, suggesting that diazotrophs are also directly exported, with a potential contribution to overall POC fluxes increasing with depth. Our results provide the first characterization of particle categories composing the sinking flux and their contribution to the overall flux in a hot spot of N 2 fixation. International audience

    In response to the escalating demand for blue swimming crabs (BSC) and the consequential impact on their habitat and population, this study advocates for sustainable management through a holistic approach. Our comprehensive framework integrates ecological conservation, socioeconomic well-being, and governance principles, aiming to establish a policy framework for the sustainable management of BSC in the Eastern Coast of Lampung. The research emphasizes the urgent issue of overexploitation, with an exploitation rate of 0.71, requiring immediate attention to prevent stock depletion and maintain ecosystem health. Findings reveal that male BSC, measured by carapace width, typically reaches the length at first catch (Lc50) at approximately 118.69 mm, while for females, it is about 122.70 mm—indicating that BSC is often caught larger than the 10 cm legal requirement set by the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries of Indonesia. Economic analysis demonstrates the profitability of the blue swimming crab business on Lampung's east coast, with a favorable crab capture per trip (4.63) and total costs ratio (1.18). The study area, featuring an extensive mangrove forest, hosts a crucial crustacean population, contributing significantly to BSC's diet. Beyond ecological significance, mangrove conservation enhances our understanding of environmental sustainability, particularly in carbon stock contributions. Addressing sustainability challenges requires a multi-faceted approach, including precise fishing technologies, effective regulation enforcement, and improved monitoring. Collaborative efforts among government authorities, fishing communities, and conservation groups are essential for balancing economic interests with the long-term ecological health of BSC populations in the study area.

    Octocorals (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) have a global distribution and form benthic assemblages along the depth gradient, from shallow to deep waters. They often occur below SCUBA diving limits, where they can become dominant habitat builders and aggregate different taxa. During a cruise in February 2023, one octocoral specimen was collected at 1453 m depth at Kebrit Deep, in the northern Saudi Arabian Red Sea axis, an area with extremely high temperature and salinity profiles at depth. Morphological analysis coupled with DNA barcoding using two mitochondrial markers (COI and mtMuts), revealed that the coral belongs to Acanthogorgia, a genus of azooxanthellate octocorals known to occur from 3 to 2300 m depths in cold, temperate and tropical waters. In the Red Sea, the genus was previously only known from shallower waters. Hence, we report the deepest record of the genus Acanthogorgia from the warm and saline Red Sea basin. This finding provides novel insights on deep-water octocoral diversity in the Red Sea, a still scantily explored area of the world, while emphasizing the need for further explorations at depth.

    Combining remote-sensing data with in-situ observations to achieve a comprehensive 3D reconstruction of the ocean state presents significant challenges for traditional interpolation techniques. To address this, we developed the CLuster Optimal Interpolation Neural Network (CLOINet), which combines the robust mathematical framework of the Optimal Interpolation (OI) scheme with a self-supervised clustering approach. CLOINet efficiently segments remote sensing images into clusters to reveal non-local correlations, thereby enhancing fine-scale oceanic reconstructions. We trained our network using outputs from an Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM), which also facilitated various testing scenarios. Our Observing System Simulation Experiments aimed to reconstruct deep salinity fields using Sea Surface Temperature (SST) or Sea Surface Height (SSH), alongside sparse in-situ salinity observations. The results showcased a significant reduction in reconstruction error up to 40% and the ability to resolve scales 50% smaller compared to baseline OI techniques. Remarkably, even though CLOINet was trained exclusively on simulated data, it accurately reconstructed an unseen SST field using only glider temperature observations and satellite chlorophyll concentration data. This demonstrates how deep learning networks like CLOINet can potentially lead the integration of modeling and observational efforts in developing an ocean digital twin.

    Physical and chemical trace metal speciation are important for our understanding of metal cycling and potential toxicity to marine life. Trace metals can behave differently in diffusion processes or particle-solution interactions and have different bioavailabilities depending on their physical and chemical forms, which often depend on redox conditions. Here we investigated dissolved (&lt; 0.2 µm) and soluble (&lt; 0.02 µm) concentrations of Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, Cu, V, Mo, U, Cd, and As in oxic and suboxic deep-sea sediments of the central equatorial Pacific Ocean. Vanadium, Mo, U, As, and Cd showed no significant concentration differences between their dissolved and soluble forms, suggesting that they are present as inorganic ionic species or organic complexes in the truly dissolved or small colloidal fraction. In contrast, the colloidal fraction (&gt; 0.02 µm &lt; 0.2 µm) of Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu increased with depth in oxic pore waters and Fe had the largest but variable colloidal pool. Soluble Mn, Co, and Ni were released in the uppermost 2-4 cm in the sediment because of reductive dissolution. The increasing colloidal fraction with depth suggests a decrease in the concentration of small organic ligands with depth, that are abundant in the surface sediment pore waters, and instead an increasing importance of larger (&gt; 0.02 µm) inorganic nanoparticles and colloids such as Mn and Fe (oxyhydr)oxides that control Mn, Fe, and Co cycling at depths &gt; 10 cm. The distribution of Ni and Cu cannot be exclusively explained by inorganic nanoparticles and a shift from low to larger high molecular weight organic ligands might occur. These findings provide new insights into trace metal distributions in the dissolved phase, highlighting the diversity of metal complexes and the need to incorporate these in future calculations of benthic metal fluxes and ecotoxicity assessments, especially in oxic pore waters.

    Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for phytoplankton growth, but its scarcity in seawater limits primary productivity across much of the ocean. Most dissolved Fe (DFe) in seawater is complexed with Fe-binding organic ligands, a poorly constrained fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which increase Fe residence time and impact Fe bioavailability. Here, we present the conditional concentration (LFe) and binding-strength (log KFe'Lcond) of Fe-binding ligands in the Western Tropical South Pacific (WTSP) Ocean during the GEOTRACES TONGA cruise (GPpr14). The transect crossed the Lau basin, a region subject to shallow hydrothermal Fe inputs that fuel intense diazotrophic activity, the oligotrophic South Pacific gyre, and the Melanesian basin. Organic speciation was analyzed by competitive ligand exchange adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-AdCSV) using salicylaldoxime at 25 µM. We found a high mean LFe of 5.2 ± 1.2 nMeqFe (n = 103) across the entire transect, predominantly consisting of intermediate strength L2 ligands (84%; mean log KFe'Lcond of 11.6 ± 0.4), consistent with humic-like substances. DFe correlated with the humic-like component of the fluorescent DOM (HS-like FDOM), yet the electroactive Fe-binding humic-like substances (LFeHS) accounted for only 20 ± 13% of LFe in the mixed layer and 8 ± 6% in deep waters. Ligands were in large excess compared to DFe (mean excess ligand eLFe = 4.6 ± 1.1 nMeqFe), suggesting poor stabilization of DFe inputs. High LFe (up to 9 nMeqFe) in samples close to hydrothermal sites could be due to detoxification strategies from plankton communities toward hydrothermally-fueled toxic trace metals other than Fe, with an apparent dilution of the DOM from the Lau basin into neighboring regions. We also observed a different peak potential of the Fe salicylaldoxime complex detected by CLE-AdCSV between the Lau and Melanesian basins, and between surface and deep waters. To our knowledge, this change in potential has not previously been reported; whether this represents a novel detection of specificities in DOM composition merits further investigation. Competition between Fe and competing metals for ligand binding sites could favor DFe oxidation and precipitation near hydrothermal vents and explain the absence of strong Fe stabilization in the WTSP.

    Rhodaliids, a specific family of siphonophores inhabiting the benthic zone, have remained enigmatic due to their rarity and elusive nature. These unique organisms, primarily found in open ocean habitats, exhibit distinctive features and are characterized by complex structures. During the Red Sea Decade Expedition, two rhodaliid specimens were collected at the sea bed at water depths of 438 and 495 meters. Regardless of challenges in specimen preservation, detailed morphological analysis revealed unique characteristics. Genetic analysis, employing the 16S rRNA marker, revealed one specimen closely related to Thermopalia taraxaca, while the taxonomic traits of this specimen suggested the identification of Archangelopsis jagoa. While most of the morphological features of the second specimen were also very similar to A. jagoa, some differences in coloration suggest the discovery of either an unusual colour variant or a potential new species within this genus. Notably, this study reports the first sequencing of A. jagoa. This species demonstrated a capacity to thrive in low-oxygen environments, challenging conventional assumptions about their habitat requirements. Despite difficulties in specimen handling and genetic analysis limitations due to a lack of comprehensive data, this research sheds light on the elusive world of benthic rhodaliids.

    Diazotrophs regulate marine productivity in the oligotrophic ocean by alleviating nitrogen limitation, contributing to particulate organic carbon (POC) export to the deep ocean. Yet, the characterization of particles composing the sinking POC flux has never been explored in such ecosystems. Moreover, the contribution of the direct gravitational export of diazotrophs to the overall flux is seldom assessed. Here we explore the composition of the sinking POC flux in a hot spot of N 2 fixation (the western sub-tropical South Pacific) using polyacrylamide gel-filled traps deployed at two stations (S05M and S10M) and three depths (170 m, 270 m, 1000 m) during the TONGA expedition (November-December 2019). Image analyses of particles collected in the gels was used to classify them into 5 categories (fecal aggregates, phytodetrital aggregates, mixed aggregates, cylindrical fecal pellets, and zooplankton carcasses). Fecal aggregates were the most abundant at both stations and all depths and dominated the flux (average of 56 ± 28% of the POC flux), followed by zooplankton carcasses (24 ± 19%), cylindrical fecal pellets (15 ± 14%) and mixed aggregates (5 ± 4%), whereas phytodetrital aggregates contributed less (<1%). Since N isotope budgets show that export is mainly supported by diazotrophy at these stations, these results suggest that the diazotroph-derived N has been efficiently transferred to the foodweb up to zooplankton and fecal pellets before being exported, pleading for an indirect export of diazotrophy. However, random confocal microscopy examination performed on sinking particles revealed that diazotrophs were present in several categories of exported particles, suggesting that diazotrophs are also directly exported, with a potential contribution to overall POC fluxes increasing with depth. Our results provide the first characterization of particle categories composing the sinking flux and their contribution to the overall flux in a hot spot of N 2 fixation. International audience

    In response to the escalating demand for blue swimming crabs (BSC) and the consequential impact on their habitat and population, this study advocates for sustainable management through a holistic approach. Our comprehensive framework integrates ecological conservation, socioeconomic well-being, and governance principles, aiming to establish a policy framework for the sustainable management of BSC in the Eastern Coast of Lampung. The research emphasizes the urgent issue of overexploitation, with an exploitation rate of 0.71, requiring immediate attention to prevent stock depletion and maintain ecosystem health. Findings reveal that male BSC, measured by carapace width, typically reaches the length at first catch (Lc50) at approximately 118.69 mm, while for females, it is about 122.70 mm—indicating that BSC is often caught larger than the 10 cm legal requirement set by the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries of Indonesia. Economic analysis demonstrates the profitability of the blue swimming crab business on Lampung's east coast, with a favorable crab capture per trip (4.63) and total costs ratio (1.18). The study area, featuring an extensive mangrove forest, hosts a crucial crustacean population, contributing significantly to BSC's diet. Beyond ecological significance, mangrove conservation enhances our understanding of environmental sustainability, particularly in carbon stock contributions. Addressing sustainability challenges requires a multi-faceted approach, including precise fishing technologies, effective regulation enforcement, and improved monitoring. Collaborative efforts among government authorities, fishing communities, and conservation groups are essential for balancing economic interests with the long-term ecological health of BSC populations in the study area.

    Octocorals (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) have a global distribution and form benthic assemblages along the depth gradient, from shallow to deep waters. They often occur below SCUBA diving limits, where they can become dominant habitat builders and aggregate different taxa. During a cruise in February 2023, one octocoral specimen was collected at 1453 m depth at Kebrit Deep, in the northern Saudi Arabian Red Sea axis, an area with extremely high temperature and salinity profiles at depth. Morphological analysis coupled with DNA barcoding using two mitochondrial markers (COI and mtMuts), revealed that the coral belongs to Acanthogorgia, a genus of azooxanthellate octocorals known to occur from 3 to 2300 m depths in cold, temperate and tropical waters. In the Red Sea, the genus was previously only known from shallower waters. Hence, we report the deepest record of the genus Acanthogorgia from the warm and saline Red Sea basin. This finding provides novel insights on deep-water octocoral diversity in the Red Sea, a still scantily explored area of the world, while emphasizing the need for further explorations at depth.
