The aim of this thesis was to study how small logistics sector and fish sector companies in Kymenlaakso region have experienced the effects of Russia’s counter-sanctions. The main research questions in the study were “Have the Russia’s counter-sanctions affected companies’ businesses in Kymenlaakso region?”, “What kind of effect(s) have the companies identified and encountered?”, “What measures have companies taken regarding the situation?” and “Have the companies tried to find new markets for their products or services?”. The primary research method in this study was a semi-structured interview. The author of this thesis interviewed professionals and experts from different companies from the chosen sectors during spring 2015. The findings show that small companies in the logistics sector and fish sector have experienced either direct or indirect effects that have been caused by the counter-sanctions. Main challenges for the fish sector are decreases in producer prices and tightened competition in the European Union area. The logistics sector has experienced difficulties due to tightened liquidity conditions. There have also been bankruptcies in the logistics sector directly caused by the counter-sanctions. Companies in both sectors have been forced to look for alternative markets, postpone investments and lay-off or terminate personnel. Scepticism and uncertainty regarding trade with Russian customers and companies have emerged. On a national level, Finland’s container balance has been negatively affected partly due to the counter-sanctions. The scope of this study is limited to small fish sector and logistics sector companies in Kymenlaakso region. Also, due to the qualitative nature of the primary research method the findings of this study are not generalizable to the public.

The growing population requires a lot of food in order to sustain itself. Therefore, also, more fish need to be caught and farmed. Since a large amount of fish captured cannot be used commercially, it is usually thrown away, which in turn can be hazardous to the environment not to mention sea birds. By catch is also caught when fishing. A circular approach to this fish waste means seeing this waste as something that should be used instead of being thrown away. Usually fish waste if not discharged overboard, is converted into fish meal or fish oil. It is often costly and time-consuming. The heterogeneous nature of fish waste is an added challenge because finding solutions that work all the time with all types of fish waste is not possible. The lab-scale applications mentioned in this thesis include, but are not limited to, turning fish waste into fertilizer, feed, nutrients, peptides, enzymes, hydrolysates, biomaterials, wastewater treatment products, and biofuels. This thesis was a literature review, and no lab work was donewhen making it.Fertilizer and feed are relatively straight-forward to do, but they require more time to be aged than their commercial counterparts. Nutrients, peptides, hydrolysates, and enzymes can also be extracted from the fish waste; however, in the case of mincing the fish waste it can only replace part of the fish meat. Peptides showed interesting properties but required more research to be identified precisely. Hydroly-sates could be used for capturing moisture in the food industry, but their inner bitterness needs to be masked beforehand. Enzymes can be extracted, but their performance varies; an enzyme for dehairing leather works great, but an enzyme to make cheese creates a cheese that cannot hold moisture inside it. Fish waste can also be added into packaging materials, where the biodegradability increase, but this comes at the cost of weaker strength and an inability to hold moisture inside the package. Their properties can be improved by adding additional substances into the material. Fish waste can also be used to manufacture sorbents for treating wastewater and in the articles they could remove, for example, azodyes and lead. Fish waste can also be converted into biofuels. However, they increase some emissions, while simultaneously reducing others and they cannot be stored as long as conventionally made diesel. Fish waste has many potential applications, but their large-scale implementation requires massive investments in a circular economy.

In this thesis, the creation of a Python based interactive map of the world’s wave energy resources is explained and presented. The application will be used by Wello Oy to generate values needed in wave energy production in various locations across the world, and to calculate the theoretical power of Wello’s Penguin wave energy converter. The application is planned to be used as an easy-to-use tool to quickly and effectively measure the power output of the Penguin wave energy converter at any given site in the world. The application allows tailored results that are calculated by using values obtained from each potential wave energy site. The results show the end user the wave energy at the site, and the optimal dimensions of the wave energy converter for maximal power production and maximal return of investment. The fundamentals of wave energy and wave energy converters are discussed, as well as the methodology for calculating the theoretical power output of waves and calculating the levelized cost of energy at each of these sites. All this is done in hope of making the process of finding potential wave energy projects more efficient and effective, and thus providing a clean, renewable and continuous energy source to the world.

The objective of this Bachelor’s thesis was to examine which transportation mode is the most cost efficient between two specific locations. The Case Company re-evaluates the cost efficiency of different transportation methods every few years due to changes in transportation costs. To determine this the case company provided materials and information as well as calculation tools that were modified to fit the scope of this thesis. An interview with a buyer was conducted to discover additional information. After that the theory of this topic was studied to gain further knowledge about the topic. Calculations which determine the cost efficiency were made and described. After that conclusion and suggestions for the case company were made. The calculations point out that in this case the sea freight is the most viable and cost efficient option. Both rail and air freight do not give enough of an advantage from reduced stock levels and shorter lead times to even out the higher cost of transportation. These transportation modes may be viable in different scenarios, however, in this case they are not recommendable.

In this final thesis, a drying chamber has been developed, on the basis of a previous prototype. A new design has been drawn in Inventor 2018 and has been tested then in Autodesk CFD 2018, to figure out air flow problems beforehand. Additional, first calculation has been done, to examine the running conditions. To improve the air flow, the drawers have been staggered in reverse order. The CFD Analysis has shown, that there were still air flow problems in the lower levels of the chamber. The air did not flow equally up but had to distribute during the up flow from the middle to the edges. This led to the creation of a vortex in the lower levels and, therefore, to a flow of the air in the wrong direction, from the backside of the chamber to its front. To prevent an unequal drying by this, changes in the design has been done. After adding a deflection plate in the ground of the device in front of the inlet and of plates to the drawers, the problems have been solved. The calculations have shown, that the drying will need 6 ℎ, while the air flow rate at the inlet is about 0,1. The next step will be to build a new prototype and to do further testing. Especially the air flow rate and the drying time has to be tested, because the calculations are based on assumptions.

Besides wanting to reach the targeted audience rapidly, it is important to communicate efficiently, and be present when consumers engage in a search. Search engine optimization (SEO) combined with search engine advertising (SEA) are fundamental practices in today’s marketing world. Ranking high on a search engine results page (SERP), increases the probability of attracting more traffic from potential customers. Valmet, a multinational company, which supplies technology, automation systems, and services, has as one of its business goals to increase the profitability of its wastewater applications in the North American market. One of the main objectives is to draw inbound traffic to these webpages, with the purpose of increasing its online sales’ leads. This development task revolves around implementing an SEO plan and an SEA campaign, in order to increase the ranking position of Valmet’s wastewater applications’ webpages on an SERP. The performance of these action plans are later measured using web analytics, where valuable knowledge can be extracted in order to continuously improve future strategic online marketing activities. The final outcome reveals the importance of a well-structured keywords’ list, which can be applied throughout SEO’s and SEA’s tasks. Relevant and shareable content is needed, both to retain potential customers, as well as to signal search engines of the relevance and authority of a webpage. Ultimately, this development task proposes the usage of certain key performance indicators aligned with Valmet’s business goals, to be measured with web analytics, and which are significant when tracking marketing activities online. By adjusting future actions, the performance efficiency of SEO’s and SEA’s efforts can be improved.

The goal of this thesis is to find out how the case company, Clean Solutions Finland Kb, can reach more target customers for their online store by utilizing online marketing activities, such as search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine advertising (SEA). The case study method, combined with qualitative methods interview and observation, was applied to collect the data necessary for the study. In the theoretical part of the thesis, related literature is reviewed and the most relevant techniques related to both types of search engine marketing (SEM) are analysed. The empirical part of the thesis combines the data collected from the literature and the case study together to build the results of the study. The results are presented in the form of recommendations for the case company. Due to the market leadership of Google in Finland, the recommendations only apply to Google. The results of the study show a variety of activities that are needed to take in order to reach more customers through marketing by search engine Google. In SEO, the main techniques are divided into on-page and off-page techniques. According to the study, choosing the right keywords play the main role in SEO. SEA activities require using Google’s own tool, Google AdWords, and the results chapter explains how this tool can be utilized in reaching more customers through search engine Google. Koska Google on käytetyin hakukone Suomessa, suositukset pätevät ainoastaan Googleen. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että pääasiakasryhmän tavoittaminen hakukonemarkkinoinnilla vaatii monentyyppisiä toimenpiteitä. Hakukoneoptimoinnissa päätekniikat on jaettu sivun sisäisiin ja ulkopuolisiin optimointikeinoihin. Avainsanojen määrittely nousi tutkimuksen mukaan tärkeimmäksi tekijäksi hakukoneoptimoinnissa. Hakukonemainonta puolestaan edellyttää Googlen oman työkalun, Google AdWordsin hallintaa. Tutkimuksen tulokset kappaleessa esitetään, kuinka tätä työkalua voidaan hyödyntää asiakkaiden tavoittamiseksi hakukone Googlen kautta.
