    Amino acids reliably evoke strong responses in fish olfactory system. The molecular olfactory receptors (ORs) are located in the membrane of cilia and microvilli of the olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). Axons of ORNs converge onspecific olfactory bulb (OB) glomeruli and the neural responses of ORNs expressing single Ors activate glomerular activity patterns typical for each amino acid. Chemically similar amino acids activate more similar glomerular activity patterns then chemically different amino acids. Differential glomerular activity patterns are the structural basis for amino acid perception and discrimination. We studied olfactory discrimination in zebrafish Danio rerio (Hamilton 1822) by conditioning them to respond to each of the following amino acidsČ L-Ala, L-Val, L-Leu, L-Arg, and L-Phe. Subsequently, zebrafish were tested for food searching activities with 18 nonconditioned amino acids. The food searching activity during 90 s of the test period was significantly greater after stimulation with the conditioned stimulus than with the nonconditioned amino acid. Zebrafish were able to discriminate all the tested amino acids except L-Ile from L-Val and L-Phe fromL-Tyr. We conclude that zebrafish have difficulties discriminating amino acid odorants that evoke highly similar chemotopic patterns of activity in the OB.

    Viability of an organism and possibility to survive in natural environment could be judged by the magnitude of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) which is defined as random deviation from perfect symmetry of an organism. In order to estimate if there is the difference in FA between diploid female and sterile triploid rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) the number of rays in pelvic and pectoral fins was determined on both sides of body in 150 individuals from two populations which were of the same genetic origin and were reared under same farm conditions. Units of asymmetry were determined as the absolute value of difference between counts on both sides of body. Results indicate that diploids exhibit larger FA than triploids in both traits however the difference between both populations is statistically significant only if the number of units of asymmetry for both traits for each fish is summed up. The need to estimate the viability of these two populations on the basis of other traits is discussed and the necessity to use the metric traits to determine FA is stressed out. Vitalnost nekega organizma in verjetnost, da preživi v naravi, je mogoče presojati na podlagi velikosti fluktuacijske asimetrije (FA). Ta je določena s tem, koliko telo določenega osebka odstopa od popolne simetrije. Da bi ocenili ali se samice in sterilni triploidni osebki kalifornijske postrvi (Oncorhynchus mykiss) med seboj razlikujejo v FA, smo pri 150 osebkih iz obeh populacij določili število plavutnic v prsnih in trebušnih plavutih na obeh straneh telesa. Kot mero za asimetrijo smo uporabili absolutno razliko v številu plavutnic v prsnih in trebušnih plavutih, na vsaki strani telesa. Rezultati kažejo, da je za obe lastnosti FA večja pri diploidnih osebkih razlika med populacijama je dovolj velika, da jo lahko štejemo kot statistično značilno le, če obe lastnosti obravnavamo združeno. Delo problematizira možnost presojanja sposobnosti preživetja le na osnovi FA in poudarja, da bi bilo nujno za določanje FA uporabiti metrične lastnosti.

    To compare the sensorial quality of wild and farmed brown trout 34 consumer were asked to decide which of the two samples presented to them in double blind test was preferred regarding appearance, aroma, juiciness, mouth feeling and general impression if difference in mentioned traits between both samples was detected. Results showed that for all traits at least 75% of consumers stated that they noticed difference. For appearance and aroma wild trout was preferred, for juiciness and mouth feeling farmed trout was favored. General impression of wild brown trout was favored by 15 consumers, while 16 consumers regarding this trait preferred farmed brown trout. Meaning and importance of results from consumers' panel test for positioning of products from fish farming and fisherz is discussed. V dvojnem slepem testu smo 34 porabnikov zaprosili, da povedo, ali so zaznali razlike glede izgleda, arome, sočnosti, okusa v ustih in splošnega vtisa med prostoživečimi potočnimi postrvmi in v ribogojnici vzrejenimi potočnimi postrvmi. Tiste, ki so razlike zaznali, smo zaprosili, naj povedo kateri od obeh vzorcev je bil glede na omenjene lastnosti po njihovem mnenju boljši. Rezultati so pokazali, da je za vsako od lastnosti najmanj 75 % porabnikov menilo, da so zaznali razliko med obema vzorcema. Glede izgleda in arome so dali prednost prostoživečim postrvim, glede sočnosti in okusa vzrejenim postrvim, glede splošnega vtisa pa je 15 porabnikov dalo prednost prostoživečim in 16 vzrejenim ribam. Pomen in pomembnost rezultatov, ki jih dobimo s tovrstnimi testi pri porabnikih smo vrednotili v kontekstu pozicioniranja rib in izdelkov, ki izvirajo iz akvakulture ali ribištva.
