    Rapid warming could drastically alter host-parasite relationships, which is especially important for fisheries crucial to human nutrition and economic livelihoods; yet we lack a synthetic understanding of how warming influences parasite-induced mortality in these systems. We conducted a meta-analysis using 301 effect sizes from 60 empirical papers on harvested aquatic species and determined the relationship between parasite-induced host mortality and temperature and how this relationship was altered by host, parasite and study design traits. Overall, temperature increased parasite-induced host mortality; however, the magnitude and sometimes direction of this relationship varied. Hosts from the order Salmoniformes experienced a greater increase in parasite-induced mortality with temperature than average. Opportunistic parasites were correlated with a greater increase in host mortality with temperature than average, while bacterial parasite-induced mortality was lower than average as temperature increased. Thus, parasites will generally increase host mortality as the environment warms; however, this effect will vary among systems.

    Supporting Python scripts used for data processing for Reese et al. (2023): "Local Mixing Determines Spatial Structure of Diahaline Exchange Flow in a Mesotidal Estuary: A Study of Extreme Runoff Conditions" [1]. River discharge information and topography as used for the numerical tidal Elbe setup applied in the same study. Contains: riverinfo.dat -- river and tributary freshwater input grid locations as grid cell indices rivers.nc -- freshwater forcing used in setup, contains sources from all included tributaries and Geesthacht. Data retrieved from [2,3,4] in combination with personal communication via the Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau (BAW). topo_smoothed_v20_z0.nc -- setup topography and curvilinear grid. Topography created from datasets [5,6], for the latter see also [7]. Python scripts used for the creation of the figures, namely: fig2: Figure 2 fig3: Figure 3 fig4: Figure 4 and Table 1 data fig5: Figure 5 and Table 2 salt data fig6: Figure 6 fig7-8: Figures 7,8 fig9: Figure 9 fig10: Figure 10 fig11: Figure 11 plot_salt_tidally-resolved: Tidally resolved stratification, not shown in paper plot_temperature_correlation_section2e: Correlation of observed and simulated temperature at same stations as Figure 5 (not shown) and Table 2 temperature data The model data used for the figures and loaded within the Python scripts is available from the corresponding author of the study [1]. Note that *paper_plot_forcing_validation.py, *paper_plot_tidal_analysis.py, and *paper_plot_salinity_correlation.py require observational data that is freely available via portal-tideelbe.de; for in-depth documentation see [1]. *paper_plot_forcing_validation.py additionally requires meteorological forcing data for the first figure panel, which cannot be made public due to its proprietary nature. The use of shapefiles to colour landmasses and plot the coastline in Figures 2, 6, and 11 has to be commented out in the respective Python scripts due to unclear copyright regarding the underlying data. However, omission of these shapefiles does not change the interpretation of the model results. ---- [1] L. Reese, U. Graewe, K. Klingbeil, X. Li, M. Lorenz, H.     Authors: Villa, Juliana; Wisocki, Phillip; Dela Cruz, Jacob E.; Hanley, Daniel;

    Avian brood parasitism is a model system for understanding coevolutionary arms races, and the great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus, hereafter 'warbler') and its parasite the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus, hereafter 'cuckoo') are prime examples of this coevolutionary struggle. Here, warblers select for egg colour mimicry by rejecting poorly matched cuckoo eggs. Contrary to long-held assumptions, recent work showed that warblers tend to reject lighter and browner eggs but tended to accept darker and bluer eggs rather than basing rejection decisions solely on perceived colour differences (i.e., the degree of mimicry). This counter-intuitive, colour-biased rejection behaviour would select for bluer and darker cuckoo eggs, but would only be adaptive if cuckoos were consistently lighter and browner than warbler eggs. Therefore, we tested whether warbler eggs were consistently bluer and darker than the cuckoo eggs. To do so, we re-analysed eggshell reflectance spectra of warblers and the cuckoos that parasitized them in the Czech Republic. As expected, we found that warbler eggs were significantly bluer and darker than the cuckoo eggs at the population level. Thus, we demonstrate imperfect mimicry in a long-coevolved cuckoo host-race and provide insights for exploring the coevolutionary interactions among hosts and their brood parasites.

    Authors: Napoli, Ester;

    Il settore della Pubblica Amministrazione sta vivendo numerose rivoluzioni sotto innumerevoli aspetti, una tra queste riguarda senz'altro la comunicazione pubblica. In tale contesto, l'Istituto di Ricerche sulla Popolazione e le Politiche Sociali (IRPPS) del CNR con MARINA (Marine Knowledge Sharing Platform for Federating Responsible Research and Innovation Communities) - progetto finanziato dal programma di ricerca e innovazione dell'UE Horizon 2020 - si trova a dover (e voler) sperimentare nuovi modi e nuovi strumenti per comunicare con gli utenti - reali e potenziali - della Piattaforma, per garantire loro il giusto grado di qualità e trasparenza e per fornire loro e ai diversi stakeholder coinvolti, a vario titolo, nella gestione e attuazione di una sinergia tra ricerca e innovazione e la salvaguardia dell'ambiente, informazioni e visibilità. È stato, inoltre, necessario, nella stesura del presente Piano di Comunicazione considerare il particolare momento che ha attraversato l'Italia da un punto di vista sanitario ed economico in seguito alla pandemia da Coronavirus (Covid19). Le diverse decisioni prese dalla Commissione europea per la risoluzione delle circostanze specifiche dovute alla pandemia in atto e il ruolo sempre più centrale dell'utilizzo dei fondi europei per il rilancio dell'economia del Paese, diventano di rilevante importanza nella definizione delle azioni di comunicazione da adottare e promuovere per garantire adeguata informazione e visibilità al progetto MARINA e alle opportunità offerte dallo stesso. In tale contesto di cambiamento, il presente Piano di Comunicazione si configura come strumento di gestione e di programmazione delle attività specifiche di comunicazione che l'IRPPS intende mettere in campo. Nello specifico, le azioni saranno orientate all'informazione e comunicazione di progetti, interventi e communities del settore marino, con una particolare attenzione alla valorizzazione del progetto MARINA nell'ambito del processo di ricerca e innovazione responsabile (RRI), in base al quale tutti gli attori coinvolti possono effettivamente far sentire la propria voce nell'intero processo di ricerca e condividere le proprie idee con coloro che sviluppano nuove soluzioni. (GRANT AGREEMENT - Project 710566 - MARINA – Knowledge Sharing Platform for Federating Responsible Research and Innovation Communities).

    Authors: Groh, Sebastian; Upchurch, Paul; Day, Julia J; Barrett, Paul M;

    Extant neosuchian crocodiles are represented by only 24 taxa that are confined to the tropics and subtropics. However, at other intervals during their 200 million-year evolutionary history, the clade reached considerably higher levels of species-richness, matched by more widespread distributions. Neosuchians have occupied numerous habitats and niches, ranging from dwarf riverine forms to large marine predators. Despite numerous previous studies, several unsolved questions remain with respect to their biogeographic history, including the geographic origins of major groups, e.g., Eusuchia and Neosuchia itself. We carried out the most comprehensive biogeographic analysis of Neosuchia to date, based on a multivariate K-means clustering approach followed by the application of two ancestral area estimation methods (BioGeoBEARS and Bayesian Ancestral Location Estimation) applied to two recently published phylogenies. Our results placed the origin of Neosuchia in north-western Pangaea, with subsequent radiations into Gondwana. Eusuchia probably emerged in the European archipelago during the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous, followed by dispersal to the North American and Asian landmasses. We show that putative transoceanic dispersal events are statistically significantly less likely to happen in alligatoroids. This finding is consistent with the saltwater intolerant physiology of extant alligatoroids, bolstering inferences of such intolerance in their ancestral lineages.

    Authors: Fritzsch, Bernadette;

    Software has played an increasingly important role in science over the years. However, software development has long led to a shadowy existence. However, as programs have become more complex and they have often been passed on as a legacy from one development team (often made up of temporary Ph.D. students) Research software as a foundation of scientific work has been increasingly pushed to the fore. In the meantime, job titles such as “research software engineer” have become established in various places. This talk examines the importance of research software in various contexts and how this affects developers of research software.

    Supporting Python scripts used for data processing for Reese et al. (2023): "Local Mixing Determines Spatial Structure of Diahaline Exchange Flow in a Mesotidal Estuary: A Study of Extreme Runoff Conditions" [1]. River discharge information and topography as used for the numerical tidal Elbe setup applied in the same study. Contains: riverinfo.dat -- river and tributary freshwater input grid locations as grid cell indices rivers.nc -- freshwater forcing used in setup, contains sources from all included tributaries and Geesthacht. Data retrieved from [2,3,4] in combination with personal communication via the Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau (BAW). topo_smoothed_v20_z0.nc -- setup topography and curvilinear grid. Topography created from datasets [5,6], for the latter see also [7]. Python scripts used for the creation of the figures, namely: fig2: Figure 2 fig3: Figure 3 fig4: Figure 4 and Table 1 data fig5: Figure 5 and Table 2 salt data fig6: Figure 6 fig7-8: Figures 7,8 fig9: Figure 9 fig10: Figure 10 fig11: Figure 11 plot_salt_tidally-resolved: Tidally resolved stratification, not shown in paper plot_temperature_correlation_section2e: Correlation of observed and simulated temperature at same stations as Figure 5 (not shown) and Table 2 temperature data The model data used for the figures and loaded within the Python scripts is available from the corresponding author of the study [1]. Note that *paper_plot_forcing_validation.py, *paper_plot_tidal_analysis.py, and *paper_plot_salinity_correlation.py require observational data that is freely available via portal-tideelbe.de; for in-depth documentation see [1]. *paper_plot_forcing_validation.py additionally requires meteorological forcing data for the first figure panel, which cannot be made public due to its proprietary nature. The use of shapefiles to colour landmasses and plot the coastline in Figures 2, 6, and 11 has to be commented out in the respective Python scripts due to unclear copyright regarding the underlying data. However, omission of these shapefiles does not change the interpretation of the model results. ---- [1] L. Reese, U. Graewe, K. Klingbeil, X. Li, M. Lorenz, H.     Authors: Villa, Juliana; Wisocki, Phillip; Dela Cruz, Jacob E.; Hanley, Daniel;
