    The poster details the methodology and preliminary findings of an accuracy assessment for sea ice condition predictions. This assessment utilizes Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery alongside sea ice drift data modeled by Barents 2.5 v2, and a warping algorithm developed by Anton Korosov and Anna Telegina, available at [https://github.com/nansencenter/sar_image_warping]. It presents an analysis of drift and distortion errors, supplementing these findings with case studies on the predictive behavior of sea ice in marginal ice zones and deformation zones, where more "ductile" types of sea ice are predominant.

    Gadolinium (Gd) is one of the rare earth elements (REY) and is widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Anthropogenic Gd enrichment has frequently been found in wastewater treatment plant effluents in industrialised countries, rising concerns regarding effects on aquatic biota. This study investigates the acute toxicity and sublethal effects of Gd in two forms, as inorganic salt (GdCl3) and as Gd-based contrast agent (GBCA), on early life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Nominal exposure concentrations ranged from 3 to 3000 μg L−1, with an exposure duration of 96 h. None of the two tested compounds were acutely toxic to embryos and larvae. Similarly, we did not observe any effects on larval development and locomotive behaviour. However, we found significant changes in the brain activity of larvae exposed to the highest concentrations of GdCl3 and the GBCA. Our findings show that Gd can have sublethal effects on developing fish at lower concentrations than reported previously, highlighting the necessity of investigating the long-term fate and effects of GBCAs released into the aquatic environment.     This draft report was submitted by the EOSC Semantic Interoperability Task Force to the EOSC Association’s Quality Review Committee’s (QRC) on 12 March 2024 to address the comments of two reviewers consulted by the EOSC Association and a community reviewer. This record contains the updated draft and a document that outlines the changes made to the previous version of the draft report (11 January 2024). This document expands on and provides nuance to some of the concepts defined in the EOSC Interoperability Framework report from the EOSC Executive Board Working Groups (WG) FAIR and Architecture published in 2021 and the conceptualisation of an EOSC Interoperability Framework that it embodies (EOSC-IF). It accounts for a deep-dive into the landscape of semantic interoperability implementations and a wide range of interoperability scenarios focused around the Semantic Interoperability Specification, some subtypes of Semantic Business Objects, as well as the Semantic Artefact Catalogue and Mapping Repository. A small set of new concepts of relevance to this work and to EOSC at large have also been added. The introduction provides context to the creation of this report, the basic concepts section provides and overview of the related components of the EOSC-IF, and the following four sections summarise explorations that frame the concluding set of recommendation to the EOSC community at large. The explorations that frame the recommendations are titled as follows: The Semantic Interoperability Specification: Implementation profiles for communities The Semantic Artefact Catalogue: Twelve maturity dimensions The Mapping Repository: Making a case for FAIR mappings and crosswalks Implementation examples: Common use cases and real-world case studies The recommendations themselves are organised under the following five broad categories: Align emerging adaptations and implementations to the Semantic View of the EOSC-IF (pp. 39–42) reference architecture. Identify and consolidate different approaches to representing and exchanging (meta)data with the FAIR Digital Objects model described in the EOSC-IF (pp. 29–34). Extend the EOSC-IF to include a research process perspective that can support convergence on solutions for common use cases. Extend the set of Semantic Business Objects described in the EOSC-IF (pp. 40–41) to include artefacts such as mappings and crosswalks. Recognise Semantic Artefact Catalogue component described in the EOSC-IF (p. 42) as a critical part of the long-term viability of any research data infrastructure. This is a draft report of the EOSC Association’s Task Force on Semantic Interoperability.     AbstractThe variability of Arctic sea-ice during abrupt stadial-interstadial shifts in the last glacial period remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the millennial-scale relationship, with a focus on Heinrich Stadials (HS), between sea-ice cover and bottom water temperature (BWT) during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 3 and 2 (64–13 ka) in the Fram Strait using new molecular sea ice biomarker data and published benthic foraminiferal BWT records. Widespread spring sea-ice cover (SpSIC) dominated the studied interval, especially in mid-late MIS 3 (45–29 ka). Yet, warm interstadials were characterized by relatively more open-ocean conditions compared to cold stadials. At the transition between a HS and the subsequent interstadial, sea ice was tightly linked to BWT with rapid reductions in SpSIC coinciding with lower BWT at the end of HS. The relative timing of the events, especially during HS 1, points to ocean warming as the key controlling factor for sea ice reduction at millennial timescales.

    The present Deliverable (D10.3) constitutes the interim version of the Dissemination and Exploitation Plan (DEP) of project AtlantECO.     No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Population dynamics is commonly described non-spatially using parameters of population demography and vital traits. Population spatial organisation is therefore considered implicit and its importance in the population dynamics ignored. The present study evidences on a variety of stocks correlation between population spatial distribution indices, population abundance, recruitment and mortality. Series of research fisheries monitoring surveys were considered for a range of different stocks (cod, herring, anchovy, hake, mullet) in different regions of the North East Atlantic and Mediterranean (North Sea, Barents Sea, Baltic Sea, Bay of Biscay, Tyrrhenian Sea, Ionian Sea and Aegean Sea). For each population, each age and each year, 9 spatial indices were computed that characterised the spatial distribution in their centre of gravity, inertia, anisotropy, extension areas, number of patches and microscale structure. For each population and age, spatial indices were linearly regressed on the abundance, on the following recruitment, and on the mortality residuals (as a constant mortality has been fitted on cohort curves). A meta-analysis table was constructed that showed the number of times that correlations were significant. The result is that spatial indices provide additional indicators for assessing population status and could be helpful in the context of stock decline and habitat loss.

    AbstractThe availability of silicon (Si) in the ocean plays an important role in regulating biogeochemical and ecological processes. The Si budget of the Arctic Ocean appears balanced, with inputs equivalent to outputs, though it is unclear how a changing climate might aggravate this balance. In this study, we focus on Si cycling in Arctic coastal areas and continental shelf sediments to better constrain the Arctic Ocean Si budget. We provide the first estimate of amorphous Si (ASi) loading from erosion of coastal Yedoma deposits (30–90 Gmol yr−1), demonstrating comparable rates to particulate Si loading from rivers (10–90 Gmol yr−1). We found a positive relationship between surface sediment ASi and organic matter content on continental shelves. Combining these values with published Arctic shelf sediment properties and burial rates we estimate 70 Gmol Si yr−1 is buried on Arctic continental shelves, equivalent to 4.5% of all Si inputs to the Arctic Ocean. Sediment dissolved Si fluxes increased with distance from river mouths along cruise transects of shelf regions influenced by major rivers in the Laptev and East Siberian seas. On an annual basis, we estimate that Arctic shelf sediments recycle approximately up to twice as much DSi (680 Gmol Si) as is loaded from rivers (340–500 Gmol Si).

    Here we present a new technique to study life history variation when only length distributions of populations are known. Shape of length distribution in a population is to a significant extent determined by the degree to which an average individual approaches its asymptotic maximum size. Statistically, the shape of a length can be characterised by its skewness, measuring the degree of symmetry in the distribution. Positive skew (long right tail) in a length distribution suggests that relative few individuals survive long enough to approach asymptotic size in a population, whereas the opposite is true for negative skew (long left tail). With a simple model of age-size dynamics in a population showing indeterminate growth, we show that skewness is strongly correlated with the ratio between mortality rate and the growth parameter k in the von Bertalanffy growth model; this ratio is a dimensionless number that is one of Beverton’s ‘life history statics’. We demonstrate the new technique with data from deep-pelagic fishes collected during the 2004 Mar-Eco expedition along the northern Mid- Atlantic Ridge.     No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Here we use a new technique to study life history variation in deep-pelagic fishes from a midocean ridge system. Shape of length distribution in a population is to a significant extent determined by the degree to which an average individual approaches its asymptotic maximum size. Analysing the material from the pelagic trawl hauls taken during the 2004 Mar-Eco expedition along the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, we show that length distributions in many deep-pelagic fish species are characterised by negative skew (the left tail of the distribution is longer). In other words, a large proportion of individuals had a size close to species-specific maximum size. Provided that our sampling can be considered representative, this finding suggests that deep-pelagic fishes have a low mortality rate relative to the rate at which they grow towards their asymptotic size

    The poster details the methodology and preliminary findings of an accuracy assessment for sea ice condition predictions. This assessment utilizes Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery alongside sea ice drift data modeled by Barents 2.5 v2, and a warping algorithm developed by Anton Korosov and Anna Telegina, available at [https://github.com/nansencenter/sar_image_warping]. It presents an analysis of drift and distortion errors, supplementing these findings with case studies on the predictive behavior of sea ice in marginal ice zones and deformation zones, where more "ductile" types of sea ice are predominant.

    Gadolinium (Gd) is one of the rare earth elements (REY) and is widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Anthropogenic Gd enrichment has frequently been found in wastewater treatment plant effluents in industrialised countries, rising concerns regarding effects on aquatic biota. This study investigates the acute toxicity and sublethal effects of Gd in two forms, as inorganic salt (GdCl3) and as Gd-based contrast agent (GBCA), on early life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Nominal exposure concentrations ranged from 3 to 3000 μg L−1, with an exposure duration of 96 h. None of the two tested compounds were acutely toxic to embryos and larvae. Similarly, we did not observe any effects on larval development and locomotive behaviour. However, we found significant changes in the brain activity of larvae exposed to the highest concentrations of GdCl3 and the GBCA. Our findings show that Gd can have sublethal effects on developing fish at lower concentrations than reported previously, highlighting the necessity of investigating the long-term fate and effects of GBCAs released into the aquatic environment.     This draft report was submitted by the EOSC Semantic Interoperability Task Force to the EOSC Association’s Quality Review Committee’s (QRC) on 12 March 2024 to address the comments of two reviewers consulted by the EOSC Association and a community reviewer. This record contains the updated draft and a document that outlines the changes made to the previous version of the draft report (11 January 2024). This document expands on and provides nuance to some of the concepts defined in the EOSC Interoperability Framework report from the EOSC Executive Board Working Groups (WG) FAIR and Architecture published in 2021 and the conceptualisation of an EOSC Interoperability Framework that it embodies (EOSC-IF). It accounts for a deep-dive into the landscape of semantic interoperability implementations and a wide range of interoperability scenarios focused around the Semantic Interoperability Specification, some subtypes of Semantic Business Objects, as well as the Semantic Artefact Catalogue and Mapping Repository. A small set of new concepts of relevance to this work and to EOSC at large have also been added. The introduction provides context to the creation of this report, the basic concepts section provides and overview of the related components of the EOSC-IF, and the following four sections summarise explorations that frame the concluding set of recommendation to the EOSC community at large. The explorations that frame the recommendations are titled as follows: The Semantic Interoperability Specification: Implementation profiles for communities The Semantic Artefact Catalogue: Twelve maturity dimensions The Mapping Repository: Making a case for FAIR mappings and crosswalks Implementation examples: Common use cases and real-world case studies The recommendations themselves are organised under the following five broad categories: Align emerging adaptations and implementations to the Semantic View of the EOSC-IF (pp. 39–42) reference architecture. Identify and consolidate different approaches to representing and exchanging (meta)data with the FAIR Digital Objects model described in the EOSC-IF (pp. 29–34). Extend the EOSC-IF to include a research process perspective that can support convergence on solutions for common use cases. Extend the set of Semantic Business Objects described in the EOSC-IF (pp. 40–41) to include artefacts such as mappings and crosswalks. Recognise Semantic Artefact Catalogue component described in the EOSC-IF (p. 42) as a critical part of the long-term viability of any research data infrastructure. This is a draft report of the EOSC Association’s Task Force on Semantic Interoperability.     AbstractThe variability of Arctic sea-ice during abrupt stadial-interstadial shifts in the last glacial period remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the millennial-scale relationship, with a focus on Heinrich Stadials (HS), between sea-ice cover and bottom water temperature (BWT) during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 3 and 2 (64–13 ka) in the Fram Strait using new molecular sea ice biomarker data and published benthic foraminiferal BWT records. Widespread spring sea-ice cover (SpSIC) dominated the studied interval, especially in mid-late MIS 3 (45–29 ka). Yet, warm interstadials were characterized by relatively more open-ocean conditions compared to cold stadials. At the transition between a HS and the subsequent interstadial, sea ice was tightly linked to BWT with rapid reductions in SpSIC coinciding with lower BWT at the end of HS. The relative timing of the events, especially during HS 1, points to ocean warming as the key controlling factor for sea ice reduction at millennial timescales.

    No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Population dynamics is commonly described non-spatially using parameters of population demography and vital traits. Population spatial organisation is therefore considered implicit and its importance in the population dynamics ignored. The present study evidences on a variety of stocks correlation between population spatial distribution indices, population abundance, recruitment and mortality. Series of research fisheries monitoring surveys were considered for a range of different stocks (cod, herring, anchovy, hake, mullet) in different regions of the North East Atlantic and Mediterranean (North Sea, Barents Sea, Baltic Sea, Bay of Biscay, Tyrrhenian Sea, Ionian Sea and Aegean Sea). For each population, each age and each year, 9 spatial indices were computed that characterised the spatial distribution in their centre of gravity, inertia, anisotropy, extension areas, number of patches and microscale structure. For each population and age, spatial indices were linearly regressed on the abundance, on the following recruitment, and on the mortality residuals (as a constant mortality has been fitted on cohort curves). A meta-analysis table was constructed that showed the number of times that correlations were significant. The result is that spatial indices provide additional indicators for assessing population status and could be helpful in the context of stock decline and habitat loss.

    AbstractThe availability of silicon (Si) in the ocean plays an important role in regulating biogeochemical and ecological processes. The Si budget of the Arctic Ocean appears balanced, with inputs equivalent to outputs, though it is unclear how a changing climate might aggravate this balance. In this study, we focus on Si cycling in Arctic coastal areas and continental shelf sediments to better constrain the Arctic Ocean Si budget. We provide the first estimate of amorphous Si (ASi) loading from erosion of coastal Yedoma deposits (30–90 Gmol yr−1), demonstrating comparable rates to particulate Si loading from rivers (10–90 Gmol yr−1). We found a positive relationship between surface sediment ASi and organic matter content on continental shelves. Combining these values with published Arctic shelf sediment properties and burial rates we estimate 70 Gmol Si yr−1 is buried on Arctic continental shelves, equivalent to 4.5% of all Si inputs to the Arctic Ocean. Sediment dissolved Si fluxes increased with distance from river mouths along cruise transects of shelf regions influenced by major rivers in the Laptev and East Siberian seas. On an annual basis, we estimate that Arctic shelf sediments recycle approximately up to twice as much DSi (680 Gmol Si) as is loaded from rivers (340–500 Gmol Si).

    Here we present a new technique to study life history variation when only length distributions of populations are known. Shape of length distribution in a population is to a significant extent determined by the degree to which an average individual approaches its asymptotic maximum size. Statistically, the shape of a length can be characterised by its skewness, measuring the degree of symmetry in the distribution. Positive skew (long right tail) in a length distribution suggests that relative few individuals survive long enough to approach asymptotic size in a population, whereas the opposite is true for negative skew (long left tail). With a simple model of age-size dynamics in a population showing indeterminate growth, we show that skewness is strongly correlated with the ratio between mortality rate and the growth parameter k in the von Bertalanffy growth model; this ratio is a dimensionless number that is one of Beverton’s ‘life history statics’. We demonstrate the new technique with data from deep-pelagic fishes collected during the 2004 Mar-Eco expedition along the northern Mid- Atlantic Ridge.     No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Here we use a new technique to study life history variation in deep-pelagic fishes from a midocean ridge system. Shape of length distribution in a population is to a significant extent determined by the degree to which an average individual approaches its asymptotic maximum size. Analysing the material from the pelagic trawl hauls taken during the 2004 Mar-Eco expedition along the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, we show that length distributions in many deep-pelagic fish species are characterised by negative skew (the left tail of the distribution is longer). In other words, a large proportion of individuals had a size close to species-specific maximum size. Provided that our sampling can be considered representative, this finding suggests that deep-pelagic fishes have a low mortality rate relative to the rate at which they grow towards their asymptotic size
