    No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Information integrated from different parts of the Mediterranean was used to model the spatial and temporal variability of the distribution grounds of anchovy at different life stages. Acoustic data recorded with a 38-kHz split-beam echosounder from the Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean), the Adriatic Sea and the Sicily Channel (central Mediterranean), the Spanish waters and the Gulf of Lions (western Mediterranean) were analysed along with satellite environmental and bathymetry data to model the spatial distribution of adult and juvenile anchovy during summer, autumn, and winter. Similarly, egg distribution data from summer surveys were used to model the potential spawning habitat of anchovy. Satellite data were used as proxies to infer spatial variations of environmental factors and assess possible ecological relationships. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were applied in a presence/absence approach. Model results were evaluated based on the estimation of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) plots. The environmental factors considered to affect anchovy during the different periods of year were identified and discussed. The selected model was subsequently used to identify those regions within the entire Mediterranean basin with higher probability of supporting suitable anchovy habitats. Potential habitat maps were produced for each year, period, and study area as well as for the entire Mediterranean basin indicating suitable areas for anchovy’s presence. The temporal stability of these areas was examined. The usefulness of such habitat suitability maps concerning the different life stages of a species in environmental research and fishery management is discussed.

    The present research aims to provide a practical numerical tool for the mechanical analysis of nanoscale trusses with similar accuracy to molecular dynamics (MD). As a first step, MD simulations of uniaxial tensile and compression tests of all possible chiralities of single-walled carbon nanotubes up to 4 nm in diameter were performed using the AIREBO potential. The results represent a dataset consisting of stress/strain curves that were then used to develop a neural network that serves as a surrogate for a constitutive model for all nanotubes considered. The cornerstone of the new framework is a partially input convex integrable neural network. It turns out that convexity enables favorable convergence properties required for implementation in the classical nonlinear truss finite element available in Abaqus. This completes a molecular dynamics-machine learning-finite element framework suitable for the static analysis of large, nanoscale, truss-like structures. The performance is verified through a comprehensive set of examples that demonstrate ease of use, accuracy, and robustness.

    In the area of the Neretva delta in the eastern Adriatic, where the European eel, Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758) has been traditionally fished for centuries, a decline in its population has been observed, as in most of Europe. Despite several studies, systematic monitoring was not performed, and the causes of population decline are attributed to anthropogenic stressors, mainly overfishing and interventions that disrupt the migration. With the stock at a low level, there is a need for a detailed assessment of biological data and the determination of the “zero state” of the eel population in the areas where monitoring was not previously performed, such as the Neretva delta. This data would serve as a basis for the development of an appropriate monitoring and eel management plan. One of the under-researched aspects is still the eel’s morphology, which is closely related to all basic life functions. The aim of this work was to analyze in detail the morphological parameters of yellow and silver eels from the mouth of the Neretva River in different seasons and the relationships between the measured morphometric parameters and physiological indicators and to compare them with previously published results for different life stages across Europe. The samples were collected during spring, summer and autumn of 2021, and winter of 2022. Yellow eels were present in the catch throughout the sampling period, while silver eels were caught in the autumn and winter. Yellow and silver eels were significantly different regarding 22 morphometric measures that were analyzed. Isometric growth was recorded for yellow eels in the spring and autumn of 2021, and positive allometric growth was recorded for yellow eels in the summer and silver eels in the autumn of 2021 and winter of 2022. PCA showed that the main factor that separates the eels grouped by life stage in different seasons is the intestine length (IL), whereas the rest of the factors (weight—W; intestine weight—IW; liver weight—LW; and total length—TL) affect the groupings almost equally. Seasonal averages of the condition factor (CF) for yellow and silver eels did not differ statistically. Three indicators were used to describe intestine morphology: relative gut weight (RGW), relative gut length (RGL), and Zihler’s index (ZHI); and the only statistically significant difference between yellow and silver eels was recorded for the RGW. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) was significantly different between silver eels in winter and yellow eels in spring. In addition to supplementing the already known facts, this paper provides new information on the functional morphology of the European eel. Monitoring of these characteristics is crucial for management of the European eel fisheries as they are directly related to functional performance and affect the ability to maintain sustainable populations in anthropogenically altered environments.

    AbstractThe Gulf of Mexico is a vital region for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), that fuels the exchange of heat between the tropics and the polar regions. A weakening of the AMOC would have dire consequences for the planet. First observations and ocean models show that this process has already started. Very limited knowledge of the components that are part of the AMOC such as the Loop Current (LC) make it difficult to understand its dynamics as well as changes in strength or temperature since the onset of the Industrial Revolution. Currently, there are no continuous in situ sea surface temperature or salinity measurements for the southeastern Gulf of Mexico or reconstruction attempts for this region, showing the necessity for high‐resolution climate archives. A Siderastrea siderea coral core was retrieved from the northwestern Cuban coast and used as a sub‐seasonally resolved sea surface temperature and hydroclimate archive. The approach is based on skeletal δ18O, and trace and minor element contents show an increase in temperature over 160 years since 1845 of 2.6–3.3°C. A possible stagnation of the warming trend set in after the 1980s, indicating a potential weakening of the Loop Current. Impacts in sea surface salinity such as El Niño events in the Pacific region can still be detected in the Gulf of Mexico as decreases in salinity in 1998 from the reconstructed δ18OSW coral record. In situ measurements remain crucial to understand the dynamics in the LC and its influence on the AMOC.

    AbstractSpatial fisheries management is widely used to reduce overfishing, rebuild stocks, and protect biodiversity. However, the effectiveness and optimization of spatial measures depend on accurately identifying ecologically meaningful areas, which can be difficult in mixed fisheries. To apply a method generally to a range of target species, we developed an ensemble of species distribution models (e‐SDM) that combines general additive models, generalized linear mixed models, random forest, and gradient‐boosting machine methods in a training and testing protocol. The e‐SDM was used to integrate density indices from two scientific bottom trawl surveys with the geopositional data, relevant oceanographic variables from the three‐dimensional physical‐biogeochemical operational model, and fishing effort from the vessel monitoring system. The determined best distributions for juveniles and adults are used to determine hot spots of aggregation based on single or multiple target species. We applied e‐SDM to juvenile and adult stages of 10 marine demersal species representing 60% of the total demersal landings in the central areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Using the e‐SDM results, hot spots of aggregation and grounds potentially more selective were identified for each species and for the target species group of otter trawl and beam trawl fisheries. The results confirm the ecological appropriateness of existing fishery restriction areas and support the identification of locations for new spatial management measures.

    Abstract Although the European Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) is one of the most common and widespread ungulate species in Europe and inhabiting a variety of habitats, few studies have addressed its population structure at a large spatial scale using nuclear genetic data. The aims of our study were to: (i) investigate genetic diversity, level of admixture, and genetic structure across European Roe Deer populations; (ii) identify barriers to gene flow; and (iii) reveal factors that have impacted the observed pattern of population genetic structure. Using 12 microsatellite loci, we analyzed 920 European Roe Deer samples from 16 study sites from northern, southern, central, and eastern Europe. The highest genetic diversity was found in central and eastern sites, and lowest in the northern and southern sites. There were 2 main groups of genetically related populations in the study area—one inhabiting mainly Fennoscandia, and the second in the continental part of Europe. This second population was further divided into 3 to 5 spatially distributed genetic clusters. European Roe Deer belonging to the Siberian mitochondrial DNA clade, inhabiting large parts of eastern Europe, were not identified as a separate population in the analysis of microsatellite loci. No isolation by distance (IBD) was detected between roe deer from the fennoscandian and the continental study sites, but the Baltic Sea was inferred to be the main barrier to gene flow. Only weak IBD was revealed within the continental population. Three lower-level genetic barriers were detected in the western, southern, and eastern parts of the study area. The main factors inferred as shaping the observed genetic diversity and population structure of European Roe Deer were postglacial recolonization, admixture of different populations of the species originating from several Last Glacial Maximum refugial areas, and isolation of several study sites.

    Authors: Opačić, Ivana;

    This thesis covers the issue of marine waste. The division of marine waste according to place, method of generation and type of waste is explained, and numerous factors influencing its quantity and composition are presented. The methods of its collection in the Republic of Croatia are covered, the measures and the model of the implementation plan for the management of such waste within the Republic of Croatia are presented, and special attention is paid to one of the measures, which is the collection of marine waste through diving eco-actions. An analysis of the data collected during such actions in the previous few years in the Republic of Croatia was made, and the projects implemented with the aim of removing and properly disposing of waste from the seabed and raising the awareness of citizens were listed. At the end of the paper, idea of a plan for the implementation of measures is given, which would properly collect, record, and analyze data on marine wste through diving eco-actions. Ovim diplomskim radom obuhvaćena je problematika morskog otpada. Objašnmjena je podjela morskog otpada prema mjestu i načinu nastanka, vrsti otpada, te su prikazani različiti čimbenici koji utječu na njegovu količinu i sastav. Obuhvaćeni su načini njegovog prikupljanja u Republici Hrvatskoj, prikazane su mjere i model provedbe plana gospodarenja takvim otpadom unutar RH te je posebna pažnja posvećena jednoj od mjera, a to je prikupljanje morskog otpada putem ronilačkih eko akcija. Napravljena je analiza prikupljenih podataka na takvim akcijama u prethodnih nekoliko godina u RH te su navedeni projekti koji se provode u cilju uklanjanja i propisnog zbrinjavanja otpada s morskog dna te podizanja svijesti građana. Na kraju rada osmišljen je primjer plana provedbi mjera kjoi bi na pravilan način prikupljao, bilježio i analizirao podatke o morskom otpadu putem ronilačkih eko akcija.

  • Authors: Bradarić, Lucija;

    Dalmatia is one of the main regions of today's Republic of Croatia, and it covers the territory of the four southernmost counties: Zadar, Šibenik Knin, Split Dalmatia and Dubrovnik Neretvan. In the past, it encompassed a much larger territory, more precisely from the year 812, and the peace in Aachen marks only a narrow strip along the eastern Adriatic coast. Dalmatia is a region of two dial ects, Štokavian mainly in the interior and Chakavian in coastal places and on the islands. The differences between the coast and the interior are not only dialectical and geographical, but above all the mentality, culture and way of life of their inhabitan ts. In the last almost seventy years, in parallel with the modernization and penetration of Western culture, there have been expressed tendencies that the term Dalmatianness (in short, Dalmatian identity) begins to be associated almost exclusively with the coastal and Mediterranean environment in general, and significantly less with the continent and interior. This is particularly visible in the organization of the festival, especially the Split festival which is the subject of this paper, and which was mod eled after the Italian festival in Sanremo. The Split festival greatly contributed to the branding of Dalmatia as a region of sun, sea, grief and other related motifs, so it's no wonder that the aforementioned motifs are among the most represented. In the observed corpus of songs for this work (performances at the Festival 1962 1992), the most represented motifs are: boat, seagull, stone/rock, kala, klapa, port, sea, song/sing/singing, sun, wine and grief . All of the above are the fundamental motifs on whic h the representation of Dalmatia in music, but also in popular culture in general, is based, and on which Dalmatianism, or the feeling of Dalmatian identity, is built. Performers who promoted Dalmatianness in their songs for decades (which is also shown in this work) are certainly Zdenka Vučković, Ivo Robić, Toni Kljaković, Miro Ungar, Tereza Kesovija, Mišo Kovač, Milo Hrnić, Đorđi Peruzović, Đani Maršan and others. Dalmacija je jedna od glavnih regija današnje Republike Hrvatske, a prostire se na području četiriju najjužnijih županija: Zadarska, Šibensko kninska, Splitsko dalmatinska i Dubrovačk o neretvanska. U prošlosti je obuhvaćala znatno veći teritorij, točnije od 812. godine i mira u Aachenu označava samo uzak pojas uz istočnojadransku obalu. Dalmacija je regija dvaju narječja, štokavskog pretežito u unutrašnjosti i čakavskog u priobalnim mj estima i na otocima. Razlike između obale i unutrašnjosti nisu samo dijalektološke i geografske, nego su prije svega u mentalitetu, kulturi i načinu života njihovih stanovnika. Posljednjih gotovo sedamdeset godina, usporedno s modernizacijom i prodorom zap adnjačke kulture, izražene su tendencije da se pojam dalmatinstva (najkraće rečeno, dalmatinskog identiteta) počinje vezivati gotovo isključivo uz primorski i mediteranski ambijent općenito, a znatno manje uz kontinent i unutrašnjost. To je osobito vidljiv o u organizaciji festivala, napose Splitskog koji je i tema ovog rada, a koji je nastao po uzoru na talijanski festival u Sanremu. Splitski je festival uvelike pridonio brendiranju Dalmacije kao regije sunca, mora, žala i ostalih vezanih motiva pa nije ni čudo da su spomenuti motivi među najzastupljenijima. U promatranom korpusu pjesama za ovaj rad (izvedbe na Festivalu 1962 1992) najzastupljeniji motivi su: barka, galeb, kamen/stijena, kala, klapa, luka, more, pjesma/pjevati/pjevanje, sunce, vino i žal . Sv e navedeno temeljni su motivi na kojima počiva prikaz Dalmacije u glazbi, ali i popularnoj kulturi općenito te se na njima gradi dalmatinstvo , odnosno osjećaj dalmatinskog identiteta. Izvođači koji su desetljećima promovirali dalmatinstvo u svojim pjesmama (a što je prikazano i u ovom radu) su svakako Zdenka Vučković, Ivo Robić, Toni Kljaković, Miro Ungar, Tereza Kesovija, Mišo Kovač, Milo Hrnić, Đorđi Peruzović, Đani Maršan i dr.

    Authors: Duvnjak, Lea;

    Jedna od najbitnijih ljudskih potreba je potreba za zdravim tijelom i duhom. Još od davnina kao jedan od specifičnih oblika turizma pojavio se zdravstveni turizam, čija je svrha bila putovanje na kojem bi poboljšali zdravstveni status, mentalno zdravlje ili se proljepšali. U današnjem pandemijskom vremenu, briga o zdravlju postala je broj jedan na listi prioriteta. Također, potaknuti standardima novih društvenih mreža i njegovanim izgledom kao statusnim simbolom, žene i muškarci sve više naginju propagandi estetskih zahvata i tretmana koji poboljšavaju zdravlje i vanjski izgled što je današnji trend. Briga o zdravlju trebala bi biti unutarnja želja pojedinca, a ne nametnuta slika eksternih utjecaja. Zdravstveni turizam, kao i cijeli svijet, njeguju i Europljani. Mađarska i Hrvatska vrlo su lako dostupne kopnenim putem, a prirodni čimbenici poput okoliša, klime, mora, termalnih izvora u suradnji sa stručnim medicinskim osobljem, uz pristupačne cijene, imaju mogućnost razvoja i napredovanja u sferi zdravstvenog turizma. One of the most important human needs is the need for a healthy body and spirit. From ancient times, one of the specific forms of tourism was health tourism, the purpose of which was a trip on which to improve health status, mental health or beautify. In today's pandemic era, health care has become number one on the list of priorities. Also, encouraged by the standards of new social networks and cherished appearance as a status symbol, women and men are increasingly inclined to promote aesthetic procedures and treatments that improve health and appearance, which is a trend today. Health care should be an individual’s inner desire, not an imposed image of external sources. Health tourism, like the whole world, is nurtured by Europeans. Hungary and Croatia are very easily accessible by land, and natural factors such as the environment, climate, the sea, thermal springs in cooperation with professional medical staff. at affordable prices. have the opportunity to develop and advance in the field of health tourism

    Authors: Datković, Dubravka;

    Plastika je postala sveprisutan materijal u vodenim ekosustavima. Masovna proizvodnja dovela je i do masovnog nastajanja plastičnog otpada koji raznim procesima u prirodi postaje mikroplastični (MP) otpad te nerijetko završi upravo u vodenim staništima. Zbog dokazanih toksičnih učinaka na živi svijet MP se smatra globalnom onečišćujućom tvari u slatkovodnim i morskim ekosustavima, osobito zbog mogućnosti transporta kroz trofičke razine sve do čovjeka. Ribe su u vodi konstantno izložene riziku unosa i akumulacije MP čestica u njihov organizam. Mogu poslužiti kao dobri bioindikatori, a dosadašnja istraživanja ukazuju na visoku stopu pronalaska čestica MP-a u probavnom sustavu riba. Razvijanje metoda za izolaciju i točno kvantificiranje MP-a u morskim i slatkovodnim staništima sve je važnije. Za praćenje prostorne distribucije i vremenskih trendova morskog MP otpada, izrazito je važno razviti i implementirati standardizirane protokole, kako bi se učinkovito i točno odredila količina MP-a u različitim staništima. U ovome radu ispitivao se utjecaj razgradnje primjenom četiri različite metode na izolaciju i određivanje MP čestica iz probavila riba iz slatkovodnih i morskih ekosustava Republike Hrvatske. Dobiveni rezultati ukazuju da je kombinacija dušične kiseline, HNO3 i fluorovodične kiseline, HF najprikladnija metoda za izolaciju MP iz probavila riba, s minimalnim utjecajem na njezinu strukturu. U sadržaju probavila svih analiziranih jedinki riba identificirane su MP čestice, čime smo potvrdili njezinu prisutnost i unos u organizme vodenih ekosustava. Plastic has become a ubiquitous material in aquatic ecosystems. Its mass production has also led to the mass formation of plastic waste, which through various processes in nature becomes microplastic (MP) waste and often ends up in aquatic habitats. Due to its proven toxic effects on living things, MP is considered a global contaminant in freshwater and marine ecosystems, especially regarding the possible transportation through trophic levels, all the way to humans. In water, fish are constantly exposed to the risk of ingestion and accumulation of MP particles in their organism. They can serve as good bioindicators, and previous research indicates a high rate of finding MP particles in the digestive system of fish. Development of methods for isolation and accurate quantification of MP in marine and freshwater habitats is increasingly important. For monitoring of the spatial distribution and temporal trends of marine MP debris, development and implementation of standardized protocols is highly important, in order to efficiently and accurately determine the quantity of MP in different habitats. In this work, the influence of digestion by four different methodologies on isolation and determination of MP particles from the intestine of fish from freshwater and marine ecosystems of the Republic of Croatia were examined. The obtained results indicate that combination of nitric acid, HNO3, and hydrofluoric acid, HF represents the most appropriate methodology for MT isolation from fish intestine, with minimum influence on its structure. The particles of MP were identified in the gut content of all analysed fish, therefore confirming its presence and uptake in aquatic organisms.

  • Authors: Bradarić, Lucija;
