    Coastal environments and in particular beaches are valuable natural assets, offering a wide array of ecosystem services and economic benefits. In this study UAV technology with RTK-GPS is used in order to map in detail, the beach morphological characteristics, aiming to the impact of the presence of Posidonia οceanica beach-cast deposits. The principal aim of this research is to evaluate the relation between the banquettes and the sediments, as well as the banquette's significance concerning the beach protection. Particularly, the distinctive goals are: a) to identify the differences in volume, shape and area covered by the banquettes, and b) to analyze the relationship between banquette deposition and the changes of the sedimentary budget. The presence of the fine-grained sediments and the calculation of the sediment budget enclosed in the total volume of the banquette (692.57±8.3m3 (Mission 2)) will re-evaluate their role concerning the coastline protection.

    Summary Recently cabozantinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor with activity against VEGF, MET, AXL, and downregulating cathepsin K in vitro, has been proposed for the treatment of advanced clear and non-clear renal cell carcinomas. Since it is well known that cathepsin K is expressed in the majority of MiT family translocation renal cell carcinomas, we investigated cathepsin K, MET, AXL, and VEGF in a large series of those tumours, looking for possible predictive markers. We collected the clinicopathological features of 34 genetically confirmed MiT family translocation renal cell carcinomas [26 Xp11 and 8 t(6;11) renal cell carcinomas] and studied them using an immunohistochemical panel including PAX8, cathepsin K, HMB45, Melan-A, CD68 (PG-M1), CK7, CA9, MET, AXL and by FISH for VEGFA and MET. Cathepsin K was expressed in 14 of 26, HMB45 in 8 of 25, and Melan-A in 4 of 23 Xp11 renal cell carcinomas, whereas labelling for CK7 and CA9 was minimal. In t(6;11) renal cell carcinoma, cathepsin K and melanogenesis markers were constantly positive, whereas CK7 and CA9 were negative. None of the 34 carcinomas showed CD68 (PG-M1) and AXL expression. One aggressive Xp11 renal cell carcinoma showed increased VEGFA gene copy number (4–5 copies) with concurrent gains of TFE3 and TFEB. None of the 34 carcinomas showed MET gene amplification, whereas staining for MET was found in 7 of 8 t(6;11) and in 16 of 24 Xp11 renal cell carcinomas, and in the latter cases, when the expression was >50%, correlated with aggressiveness (p=0.0049). In Xp11 renal cell carcinomas, the aggressiveness was also correlated with larger tumour size (p=0.0008) and the presence of necrosis (p=0.027) but not nucleolar grading (p=1). Interestingly, in patients with tumours exhibiting two of three parameters (necrosis, larger tumour size and MET immunolabelling >50%) an aggressive clinical behaviour was observed in 88% of cases. In conclusion, cathepsin K, CD68 (PG-M1), CK7, CA9, and PAX8 is a useful panel for the diagnosis. Larger tumour size, the presence of necrosis and MET immunohistochemical expression correlate with aggressive behaviour in Xp11 renal cell carcinomas, especially in combination. VEGF, MET, cathepsin K but not AXL may be potential predictive markers for targeted therapy in MiT family translocation renal cell carcinomas.

    The effect of feed deprivation at four water temperatures (17, 20, 23, 26 °C) was investigated in meagre (Argyrosomus regius) of initial mean weight ± SD, 116.16 ± 4.74 g, in triplicate groups. Fish were deprived of feed for a period of 60 days and sampled on days 0, 14, 41, and 60, during which body weight, specific growth rate, somatic indices, muscle proximate composition, plasma metabolite levels (total lipids, proteins, cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose), and liver and muscle enzymatic activities [L-lactate dehydrogenase (L-LDH), citrate synthase (CS), malate dehydrogenase (MDH)] were evaluated. Long-term feed deprivation resulted in a significant decrease in body weight, condition factor (CF), hepatosomatic index (HSI), muscle lipids, and plasma metabolites (all except proteins) and increase in muscle moisture. Plasma glucose concentration decreased with time and became significantly lower at 41 and 60 days. Glucose concentration and weight loss expressed a different response in the short term (14 days) than in the long term (14 and 60 days) of feed deprivation, suggesting a change in glucose metabolic profile. After 60 days of feed deprivation, there was an increase in the L-LDH activity in the liver at all temperature levels, which reflects a rising glycolytic potential by activating the carbohydrate metabolism and an ATP-dependent demand. MDH activity increased in the liver and muscle, except at 17 °C in the muscle, which indicates aerobic glycolysis and lipolysis. CS activity in the liver increased after the 60 days, whereas that in the muscle decreased, indicating the muscle is less dependent on aerobic oxidation for energy reserves.

    Marine protected areas (MPAs) socio-ecological effectiveness depends on a number of management and governance elements, among which stakeholder engagement and community support play key roles. Collaborative conservation initiatives that engage stakeholders in action research and knowledge co-production processes can enhance management and governance of MPAs. To design effective strategies aimed at reconciling biodiversity conservation and management of sustainable human uses, it is key to assess how local communities respond to such initiatives and identify the set of contextual factors, institutional, local and individual, potentially affecting these responses. This paper presents the approach and results of one such initiative, spanning 6 EU countries and 11 MPAs in the Mediterranean Sea, focusing on small-scale fishers as key MPA users. Through a collaborative project, managers and fishers agreed upon specific governance interventions (e.g. increasing stakeholder engagement, engaging fishers in monitoring activities, reducing fishing efforts) to be implemented in each MPA for one year. Structured surveys queried: MPA managers on the MPA context, governance structure, feasibility and effectiveness of the tested interventions; and small-scale fishers on their perceptions of the impact of the tested interventions on a set of 9 socio-ecological variables (e.g. amount of fish caught, level of participation in decision-making, support for the MPA). Results revealed that the interventions tested were relatively feasible, effective and cost-effective. Fishers reported positive perceptions of the interventions for the 9 variables considered, especially for level of support for the MPA and for those associated with aspects of governance. Proportional odds models highlighted perceived effects are maximized under certain institutional, local and individual circumstances (e.g. old MPAs, small fisher communities, and fishers with a high proportion of income from fisheries). Findings highlight that employing good governance processes involving stakeholders may rapidly generate improved local support for conservation and provide insights for potential leverage points upon which to act to maximize perceived effectiveness and enhance support toward MPAs.

    Abstract We investigated two lignite quarries in northern Greece for orbital and suborbital climate variability. Sections Lava and Vegora are located at the southern and northern boundaries of the Ptolemais Basin, a northwest southeast elongated intramontane basin that contains Upper Miocene to Lower Pliocene lacustrine sediments. Sediments show cyclic alterations of marl-rich (light), and coal-rich or clay-rich (dark) strata on a decimeter to meter scale. First, we established low-resolution ground-truth stratigraphy based on paleomagnetics and biostratigraphy. Accordingly, the lower 67 m and 65 m that were investigated in both sections Vegora and Lava, respectively, belong to the Upper Miocene and cover a time period of 6.85 to 6.57 and 6.46 to 5.98 Ma at sedimentation rates of roughly 14 and 22 cm/ka. In order to obtain a robust and high-resolution chronology, we then tuned carbonate minima (low L* values; high magnetic susceptibility values) to insolation minima. Besides the known dominance of orbital precession and eccentricity, we detected a robust hemi-precessional cycle in most parameters, most likely indicative for monsoonal influence on climate. Moreover, the insolation-forced time series indicate a number of millennial-scale frequencies that are statistically significant with dominant periods of 1.5–8 kyr. Evolutionary spectral analysis indicates that millennial-scale climate variability documented for the Ptolemais Basin resembles the one that is preserved in ice-core records of Greenland. Most cycles show durations of several tens of thousands of years before they diminish or cease. This is surprising because the generally argued cause for Late Quaternary millennial-scale variability is associated with the presence of large ice sheets, which cannot be the case for the Upper Miocene. Possible explanations maybe a direct response to solar forcing, an influence on the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water through the outflow of high-salinity water, or an atmospheric link to the North Atlantic Oscillation.

    Advantageous numerical methods for solving the Dirac equations are derived. They are based on different stochastic optimization techniques, namely the Genetic algorithms, the Particle Swarm Optimization and the Simulated Annealing method, their use of which is favored fromintuitive, practical, and theoretical arguments. Towards this end, we optimize appropriate parametric expressions representing the radial Dirac wave functions by employing methods that minimize multi parametric expressions in several physical applications.     In 2012, Tetrodotoxin (TTX) was identified in mussels and linked to the presence of Prorocentrum minimum (P. minimum) in Greece. The connexion between TTX and P. minimum was further studied in this paper. First, the presence of TTX-producer bacteria, Vibrio and Pseudomonas spp, was confirmed in Greek mussels. In addition these samples showed high activity as inhibitors of sodium currents (INa). P. minimum was before associated with neurotoxic symptoms, however, the nature and structure of toxins produced by this dinoflagellate remains unknown. Three P. minimum strains, ccmp1529, ccmp2811 and ccmp2956, growing in different conditions of temperature, salinity and light were used to study the production of toxic compounds. Electrophysiological assays showed no effect of ccmp2811 strain on INa, while ccmp1529 and ccmp2956 strains were able to significantly reduce INa in the same way as TTX. In these samples two new compounds, m/z 265 and m/z 308, were identified and characterized by liquid chromatography tandem high-resolution mass spectrometry. Besides, two TTX-related bacteria, Roseobacter and Vibrio sp, were observed.     PelasgusKottelat & Freyhof 2007 (Leuciscidae) is a freshwater fish genus endemic to the Southern Balkans. The distribution of most of its species is insufficiently known.Pelasguswas molecularly studied only marginally, and the genetic diversity of individual species or populations, crucial for their conservation, is completely unknown. We studied distribution and genetic diversity ofPelasgus stymphalicus(Valenciennes 1844) andPelasgus marathonicus(Vinciguerra 1921), two widespread species from southern Greece. Our data, based oncytochrome bsequences, confirmed that a number of populations whose taxonomic status had been uncertain, belong to one of these species. The distribution range ofP. stymphalicusincludes the Ionian mainland, from the Acheloos to Mornos rivers, and most of the Peloponnese, excluding the Evrotas and the headwaters of Alfios. The native range ofPelasgus marathonicusis the western Aegean mainland, from rivers near Athens to the Xerias river in the Pagasitikos Gulf. AMOVA showed that the genetic variance is slightly higher among than between populations. HighFSTvalues indicated a pronounced genetic differentiation of the populations in both species. There was a high proportion of private haplotypes and a very small number of shared haplotypes between populations in both species, which indicates uniqueness of each population and their susceptibility to human-induced changes.

    The Saronikos Gulf, including the industrial zone of Elefsis Bay, is subjected to a variety of urban and industrial impacts that significantly contribute to environmental degradation. Benthic foraminifera comprise a significant component of meiobenthic communities and they are widely used as reliable indicators for the determination of the natural environmental and anthropogenic impact in shallow coastal systems. The present study analyses the living benthic foraminifera composition and its relation to environmental parameters such as grain size, organic carbon content, and heavy metal concentrations, from the surficial sediment layer collected in the Elefsis Bay and the Inner Saronikos Gulf in February 2016. Canonical correspondence analysis and Spearman’s rho correlation show that the foraminiferal species composition is significantly influenced by the increase of organic carbon and Cu, Pb, Zn content. In particular, a relatively low diversity fauna dominated by the stress-tolerant species Ammonia tepida, Bulimina elongata, Bulimina marginata, and Nonionella turgida occurs in the restricted environment of the Elefsis Bay, demonstrating the negative environmental impact caused by the relatively elevated organic carbon and heavy metal contents.

    To assess the effect of the anti-marine-borer timber preservative CCA (a pressure-impregnated solution of copper, chromium, and arsenic compounds) on nontarget epibiota, fouling community development was investigated. Panels of Scots pine treated to target retentions of 12, 24, and 48 kg CCA per m3 of wood (covering the range of retentions recommended for marine use) plus untreated controls were submerged at seven coastal sites (Portsmouth, UK; La Tremblade [two sites], France; Ria Formosa, Portugal; Sagres, Portugal; Kristineberg, Sweden; Athens, Greece). The fouling community on the surfaces of the panels was assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively after 6, 12, and 18 months of exposure. Multivariate statistical methods were used to compare community structure between panel treatments. Panels treated to the three CCA loadings supported very similar fouling assemblages, which in most cases had higher numbers of taxa and individuals than assemblages on untreated panels. No detrimental effects on epibiota due to CCA preservatives were detected at any of the treatment levels at all seven exposure sites, suggesting that the range of environmental conditions at the sites had no bearing on preservative impact on fouling biota. Differences in community structure between CCA-treated and untreated panels may be due to enhanced larval settlement on CCA-treated timber by some species as a result of modifications to the surface properties of the timber by the preservative. Possible reasons for the higher numbers of certain species on the surface of CCA-treated panels are discussed.

    Coastal environments and in particular beaches are valuable natural assets, offering a wide array of ecosystem services and economic benefits. In this study UAV technology with RTK-GPS is used in order to map in detail, the beach morphological characteristics, aiming to the impact of the presence of Posidonia οceanica beach-cast deposits. The principal aim of this research is to evaluate the relation between the banquettes and the sediments, as well as the banquette's significance concerning the beach protection. Particularly, the distinctive goals are: a) to identify the differences in volume, shape and area covered by the banquettes, and b) to analyze the relationship between banquette deposition and the changes of the sedimentary budget. The presence of the fine-grained sediments and the calculation of the sediment budget enclosed in the total volume of the banquette (692.57±8.3m3 (Mission 2)) will re-evaluate their role concerning the coastline protection.

    Summary Recently cabozantinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor with activity against VEGF, MET, AXL, and downregulating cathepsin K in vitro, has been proposed for the treatment of advanced clear and non-clear renal cell carcinomas. Since it is well known that cathepsin K is expressed in the majority of MiT family translocation renal cell carcinomas, we investigated cathepsin K, MET, AXL, and VEGF in a large series of those tumours, looking for possible predictive markers. We collected the clinicopathological features of 34 genetically confirmed MiT family translocation renal cell carcinomas [26 Xp11 and 8 t(6;11) renal cell carcinomas] and studied them using an immunohistochemical panel including PAX8, cathepsin K, HMB45, Melan-A, CD68 (PG-M1), CK7, CA9, MET, AXL and by FISH for VEGFA and MET. Cathepsin K was expressed in 14 of 26, HMB45 in 8 of 25, and Melan-A in 4 of 23 Xp11 renal cell carcinomas, whereas labelling for CK7 and CA9 was minimal. In t(6;11) renal cell carcinoma, cathepsin K and melanogenesis markers were constantly positive, whereas CK7 and CA9 were negative. None of the 34 carcinomas showed CD68 (PG-M1) and AXL expression. One aggressive Xp11 renal cell carcinoma showed increased VEGFA gene copy number (4–5 copies) with concurrent gains of TFE3 and TFEB. None of the 34 carcinomas showed MET gene amplification, whereas staining for MET was found in 7 of 8 t(6;11) and in 16 of 24 Xp11 renal cell carcinomas, and in the latter cases, when the expression was >50%, correlated with aggressiveness (p=0.0049). In Xp11 renal cell carcinomas, the aggressiveness was also correlated with larger tumour size (p=0.0008) and the presence of necrosis (p=0.027) but not nucleolar grading (p=1). Interestingly, in patients with tumours exhibiting two of three parameters (necrosis, larger tumour size and MET immunolabelling >50%) an aggressive clinical behaviour was observed in 88% of cases. In conclusion, cathepsin K, CD68 (PG-M1), CK7, CA9, and PAX8 is a useful panel for the diagnosis. Larger tumour size, the presence of necrosis and MET immunohistochemical expression correlate with aggressive behaviour in Xp11 renal cell carcinomas, especially in combination. VEGF, MET, cathepsin K but not AXL may be potential predictive markers for targeted therapy in MiT family translocation renal cell carcinomas.

    The effect of feed deprivation at four water temperatures (17, 20, 23, 26 °C) was investigated in meagre (Argyrosomus regius) of initial mean weight ± SD, 116.16 ± 4.74 g, in triplicate groups. Fish were deprived of feed for a period of 60 days and sampled on days 0, 14, 41, and 60, during which body weight, specific growth rate, somatic indices, muscle proximate composition, plasma metabolite levels (total lipids, proteins, cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose), and liver and muscle enzymatic activities [L-lactate dehydrogenase (L-LDH), citrate synthase (CS), malate dehydrogenase (MDH)] were evaluated. Long-term feed deprivation resulted in a significant decrease in body weight, condition factor (CF), hepatosomatic index (HSI), muscle lipids, and plasma metabolites (all except proteins) and increase in muscle moisture. Plasma glucose concentration decreased with time and became significantly lower at 41 and 60 days. Glucose concentration and weight loss expressed a different response in the short term (14 days) than in the long term (14 and 60 days) of feed deprivation, suggesting a change in glucose metabolic profile. After 60 days of feed deprivation, there was an increase in the L-LDH activity in the liver at all temperature levels, which reflects a rising glycolytic potential by activating the carbohydrate metabolism and an ATP-dependent demand. MDH activity increased in the liver and muscle, except at 17 °C in the muscle, which indicates aerobic glycolysis and lipolysis. CS activity in the liver increased after the 60 days, whereas that in the muscle decreased, indicating the muscle is less dependent on aerobic oxidation for energy reserves.

    Marine protected areas (MPAs) socio-ecological effectiveness depends on a number of management and governance elements, among which stakeholder engagement and community support play key roles. Collaborative conservation initiatives that engage stakeholders in action research and knowledge co-production processes can enhance management and governance of MPAs. To design effective strategies aimed at reconciling biodiversity conservation and management of sustainable human uses, it is key to assess how local communities respond to such initiatives and identify the set of contextual factors, institutional, local and individual, potentially affecting these responses. This paper presents the approach and results of one such initiative, spanning 6 EU countries and 11 MPAs in the Mediterranean Sea, focusing on small-scale fishers as key MPA users. Through a collaborative project, managers and fishers agreed upon specific governance interventions (e.g. increasing stakeholder engagement, engaging fishers in monitoring activities, reducing fishing efforts) to be implemented in each MPA for one year. Structured surveys queried: MPA managers on the MPA context, governance structure, feasibility and effectiveness of the tested interventions; and small-scale fishers on their perceptions of the impact of the tested interventions on a set of 9 socio-ecological variables (e.g. amount of fish caught, level of participation in decision-making, support for the MPA). Results revealed that the interventions tested were relatively feasible, effective and cost-effective. Fishers reported positive perceptions of the interventions for the 9 variables considered, especially for level of support for the MPA and for those associated with aspects of governance. Proportional odds models highlighted perceived effects are maximized under certain institutional, local and individual circumstances (e.g. old MPAs, small fisher communities, and fishers with a high proportion of income from fisheries). Findings highlight that employing good governance processes involving stakeholders may rapidly generate improved local support for conservation and provide insights for potential leverage points upon which to act to maximize perceived effectiveness and enhance support toward MPAs.

    Abstract We investigated two lignite quarries in northern Greece for orbital and suborbital climate variability. Sections Lava and Vegora are located at the southern and northern boundaries of the Ptolemais Basin, a northwest southeast elongated intramontane basin that contains Upper Miocene to Lower Pliocene lacustrine sediments. Sediments show cyclic alterations of marl-rich (light), and coal-rich or clay-rich (dark) strata on a decimeter to meter scale. First, we established low-resolution ground-truth stratigraphy based on paleomagnetics and biostratigraphy. Accordingly, the lower 67 m and 65 m that were investigated in both sections Vegora and Lava, respectively, belong to the Upper Miocene and cover a time period of 6.85 to 6.57 and 6.46 to 5.98 Ma at sedimentation rates of roughly 14 and 22 cm/ka. In order to obtain a robust and high-resolution chronology, we then tuned carbonate minima (low L* values; high magnetic susceptibility values) to insolation minima. Besides the known dominance of orbital precession and eccentricity, we detected a robust hemi-precessional cycle in most parameters, most likely indicative for monsoonal influence on climate. Moreover, the insolation-forced time series indicate a number of millennial-scale frequencies that are statistically significant with dominant periods of 1.5–8 kyr. Evolutionary spectral analysis indicates that millennial-scale climate variability documented for the Ptolemais Basin resembles the one that is preserved in ice-core records of Greenland. Most cycles show durations of several tens of thousands of years before they diminish or cease. This is surprising because the generally argued cause for Late Quaternary millennial-scale variability is associated with the presence of large ice sheets, which cannot be the case for the Upper Miocene. Possible explanations maybe a direct response to solar forcing, an influence on the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water through the outflow of high-salinity water, or an atmospheric link to the North Atlantic Oscillation.

    Advantageous numerical methods for solving the Dirac equations are derived. They are based on different stochastic optimization techniques, namely the Genetic algorithms, the Particle Swarm Optimization and the Simulated Annealing method, their use of which is favored fromintuitive, practical, and theoretical arguments. Towards this end, we optimize appropriate parametric expressions representing the radial Dirac wave functions by employing methods that minimize multi parametric expressions in several physical applications.     In 2012, Tetrodotoxin (TTX) was identified in mussels and linked to the presence of Prorocentrum minimum (P. minimum) in Greece. The connexion between TTX and P. minimum was further studied in this paper. First, the presence of TTX-producer bacteria, Vibrio and Pseudomonas spp, was confirmed in Greek mussels. In addition these samples showed high activity as inhibitors of sodium currents (INa). P. minimum was before associated with neurotoxic symptoms, however, the nature and structure of toxins produced by this dinoflagellate remains unknown. Three P. minimum strains, ccmp1529, ccmp2811 and ccmp2956, growing in different conditions of temperature, salinity and light were used to study the production of toxic compounds. Electrophysiological assays showed no effect of ccmp2811 strain on INa, while ccmp1529 and ccmp2956 strains were able to significantly reduce INa in the same way as TTX. In these samples two new compounds, m/z 265 and m/z 308, were identified and characterized by liquid chromatography tandem high-resolution mass spectrometry. Besides, two TTX-related bacteria, Roseobacter and Vibrio sp, were observed.     PelasgusKottelat & Freyhof 2007 (Leuciscidae) is a freshwater fish genus endemic to the Southern Balkans. The distribution of most of its species is insufficiently known.Pelasguswas molecularly studied only marginally, and the genetic diversity of individual species or populations, crucial for their conservation, is completely unknown. We studied distribution and genetic diversity ofPelasgus stymphalicus(Valenciennes 1844) andPelasgus marathonicus(Vinciguerra 1921), two widespread species from southern Greece. Our data, based oncytochrome bsequences, confirmed that a number of populations whose taxonomic status had been uncertain, belong to one of these species. The distribution range ofP. stymphalicusincludes the Ionian mainland, from the Acheloos to Mornos rivers, and most of the Peloponnese, excluding the Evrotas and the headwaters of Alfios. The native range ofPelasgus marathonicusis the western Aegean mainland, from rivers near Athens to the Xerias river in the Pagasitikos Gulf. AMOVA showed that the genetic variance is slightly higher among than between populations. HighFSTvalues indicated a pronounced genetic differentiation of the populations in both species. There was a high proportion of private haplotypes and a very small number of shared haplotypes between populations in both species, which indicates uniqueness of each population and their susceptibility to human-induced changes.

    The Saronikos Gulf, including the industrial zone of Elefsis Bay, is subjected to a variety of urban and industrial impacts that significantly contribute to environmental degradation. Benthic foraminifera comprise a significant component of meiobenthic communities and they are widely used as reliable indicators for the determination of the natural environmental and anthropogenic impact in shallow coastal systems. The present study analyses the living benthic foraminifera composition and its relation to environmental parameters such as grain size, organic carbon content, and heavy metal concentrations, from the surficial sediment layer collected in the Elefsis Bay and the Inner Saronikos Gulf in February 2016. Canonical correspondence analysis and Spearman’s rho correlation show that the foraminiferal species composition is significantly influenced by the increase of organic carbon and Cu, Pb, Zn content. In particular, a relatively low diversity fauna dominated by the stress-tolerant species Ammonia tepida, Bulimina elongata, Bulimina marginata, and Nonionella turgida occurs in the restricted environment of the Elefsis Bay, demonstrating the negative environmental impact caused by the relatively elevated organic carbon and heavy metal contents.

    To assess the effect of the anti-marine-borer timber preservative CCA (a pressure-impregnated solution of copper, chromium, and arsenic compounds) on nontarget epibiota, fouling community development was investigated. Panels of Scots pine treated to target retentions of 12, 24, and 48 kg CCA per m3 of wood (covering the range of retentions recommended for marine use) plus untreated controls were submerged at seven coastal sites (Portsmouth, UK; La Tremblade [two sites], France; Ria Formosa, Portugal; Sagres, Portugal; Kristineberg, Sweden; Athens, Greece). The fouling community on the surfaces of the panels was assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively after 6, 12, and 18 months of exposure. Multivariate statistical methods were used to compare community structure between panel treatments. Panels treated to the three CCA loadings supported very similar fouling assemblages, which in most cases had higher numbers of taxa and individuals than assemblages on untreated panels. No detrimental effects on epibiota due to CCA preservatives were detected at any of the treatment levels at all seven exposure sites, suggesting that the range of environmental conditions at the sites had no bearing on preservative impact on fouling biota. Differences in community structure between CCA-treated and untreated panels may be due to enhanced larval settlement on CCA-treated timber by some species as a result of modifications to the surface properties of the timber by the preservative. Possible reasons for the higher numbers of certain species on the surface of CCA-treated panels are discussed.
