Integrated information from different parts of the Mediterranean Sea was used to model the spatial and temporal variability of the distribution grounds of the sardine population. Acoustic data from the North Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean), the Adriatic Sea (Central Mediterranean), the Sicily Channel (Central Mediterranean) and Spanish Mediterranean waters (Western Mediterranean) were analysed along with satellite environmental and bathymetric data to model the potential habitat of sardine during summer, autumn and early winter. Generalized additive models were applied in a presence−absence approach. Models were validated in terms of their predictive ability and used to construct maps exhibiting the probability of sardine presence throughout the entire Mediterranean basin as a measure of habitat adequacy for sardine. Bottom depth and sea surface temperature were the environmental variables that explained most of the data variability. Several areas along the Mediterranean coastline were indicated as suitable habitat for sardine in different seasons. An expansion of these areas over the continental shelf, up to 100 m depth, was consistently noticed from summer to winter. This was attributed to the horizontal movements of sardine related to spawning (i.e. winter period) and the peculiarities of the Mediterranean Sea where areas favouring growth, feeding and spawning processes tend to be localised and prevent a long range, offshore migration as opposed to large upwelling ecosystems. Clonally transmissible cancers are tumour lineages that are transmitted between individuals via the transfer of living cancer cells. In marine bivalves, leukaemia-like transmissible cancers, called hemic neoplasia (HN), have demonstrated the ability to infect individuals from different species. We performed whole-genome sequencing in eight warty venus clams that were diagnosed with HN, from two sampling points located more than 1000 nautical miles away in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea Coasts of Spain. Mitochondrial genome sequencing analysis from neoplastic animals revealed the coexistence of haplotypes from two different clam species. Phylogenies estimated from mitochondrial and nuclear markers confirmed this leukaemia originated in striped venus clams and later transmitted to clams of the species warty venus, in which it survives as a contagious cancer. The analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences supports all studied tumours belong to a single neoplastic lineage that spreads in the Seas of Southern Europe. Size at first sexual maturity (L50) represents an important life history trait in the development of management measures providing fundamental information to avoid the exploitation of younger individuals. L50 is known to display variability due to fishing pressure, geographical gradient and environmental features. In this study, in order to investigate L50 variability among areas of the Mediterranean and Black Sea, maturity ogives of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) were estimated by considering samples collected during the anchovy spawning period in the framework of the MEDiterranean International Acoustic Survey (MEDIAS) program. Anchovy size and sexual maturity data from several Geographical Sub-Areas (GSA) – i.e., Northern Spain, Gulf of Lion, Tyrrhenian Sea, Strait of Sicily, Adriatic Sea and Black Sea – were gathered according to a standard methodological protocol. Maturity ogives were estimated by means of a logistic regression taking into account total length, condition factor, sex and GSA. Obtained results evidenced a significant effect of condition factor, fish in better condition reaching maturity earlier, as well as differences in L50 values among areas and between sexes, with males reaching the maturity at lower length than females. Even though the obtained L50 estimates are relative to the spawning period only, the observed variability at the Mediterranean basin scale highlights the importance to explicitly consider the habitat peculiarities in order to provide management advices based on an ecosystem approach to fishery. The Mediterranean Sea is located in a crossroad of mid-latitude and subtropical climatic modes that enhance contrasting environmental conditions over both latitudinal and longitudinal ranges. Here, we show that the large-scale environmental forcing is reflected in the basin scale trends of the adult population of the calanoid copepod Centropages typicus. The species is distributed over the whole Mediterranean basin, and maximal abundances were found in the north-western basin associated to oceanic fronts, and in the Adriatic Sea associated to shallow and semi enclosed waters. The peak of main abundances of C. typicus correlates with the latitudinal temperature gradient and the highest seasonal abundances occurred in spring within the 14–18°C temperature window. Such thermal cline may define the latitudinal geographic region where C. typicus seasonally dominates the >200 μm-sized spring copepod community in the Mediterranean Sea. AbstractDissolved free taurine, an important osmolyte in phytoplankton and metazoans, has been shown to be a significant carbon and energy source for prokaryotes in the North Atlantic throughout the water column. However, the extent of the coupling between taurine production and consumption over a seasonal cycle has not been examined yet. We determined taurine production by abundant crustacean zooplankton and its role as a carbon and energy source for several prokaryotic taxa in the northern Adriatic Sea over a seasonal cycle. Taurine concentrations were generally in the low nanomolar range, reaching a maximum of 22 nmol L−1 in fall during a Pseudonitzschia bloom and coinciding with the highest zooplankton taurine release rates. Taurine accounted for up to 5% of the carbon, 11% of the nitrogen, and up to 71% of the sulfur requirements of heterotrophic prokaryotes. Members of the Roseobacter clade, Alteromonas, Thaumarchaeota, and Euryarchaeota exhibited higher cell‐specific taurine assimilation rates than SAR11 cells. However, cell‐specific taurine and leucine assimilation were highly variable in all taxa, suggesting species and/or ecotype specific utilization patterns of taurine and dissolved free amino acids. Copepods were able to cover the bulk taurine requirements of the prokaryotic communities in fall and winter and partly in the spring–summer period. Overall, our study emphasizes the significance of taurine as a carbon and energy source for the prokaryotic community in the northern Adriatic Sea and the importance of crustacean zooplankton as a significant source of taurine and other organic compounds for the heterotrophic prokaryotic community.

Este trabajo presenta una nueva aproximación al diagnóstico de la sobrepesca de reclutamiento. Nuestra hipótesis consiste en que la condición de los reclutas debe aumentar cuando suceden fallos en el reclutamiento debidos a la actividad pesquera. Esto sería una consecuencia del incremento en la disponibilidad de recursos tróficos debido a que la población es más reducida que la que el ecosistema podría soportar. Se calcularon series temporales de condición de reclutas de merluza a partir de datos recogidos en las campañas MEDITS en las sub-áreas geográficas (GSAs) 1, 6, 17 y 19 entre los años 1994 y 2015. Se utilizó la regresión lineal múltiple para analizar la relación entre la condición media anual y la abundancia de reclutas e índices climáticos en cada GSA. Solo se detectaron correlaciones significativas en la GSA 6, dónde el 69% de la variabilidad en la condición se explica por la correlación negativa con la abundancia de reclutas, y con dos índices climáticos, la Oscilación del Mediterráneo Occidental y la anomalía estandarizada de la temperatura del aire en superficie en el Golfo de León. A pesar de las diferencias en la abundancia de reclutas entre GSAs, su condición anual media osciló alrededor de un mismo valor basal durante la mayor parte de la serie temporal, sugiriendo que las tasas de mortalidad denso-dependiente son un mecanismo importante para la estabilización del reclutamiento de merluza en niveles próximos a la capacidad de carga cuando las poblaciones no sufren sobrepesca de reclutamiento. Este patrón cambió cuando la tendencia decreciente de la abundancia de reclutas elevó los valores de condición en la GSA 6 por encima de los del resto de GSAs de forma persistente. De acuerdo con nuestra hipótesis, la merluza de la GSA 6 se encuentra en sobrepesca de reclutamiento. A new approach to recruitment overfishing diagnosis is presented. We hypothesize that condition of recruits should increase when recruitment failures are caused by fishing activity. This would be a consequence of the increase in trophic resource availability, because the population is smaller than that which the ecosystem could support. Temporal series of hake recruit condition were calculated from MEDITS survey data collected in Mediterranean geographical sub-areas (GSAs) 1, 6, 17 and 19 from 1994 to 2015. Multiple linear regressions were used to analyse the relationship between mean annual condition and abundance of recruits and climatic indices in each GSA. Significant correlations were only detected in GSA 6, where 69% of condition variability was explained by the negative correlation with recruit abundance, and with two climatic indices, the Western Mediterranean Oscillation and the standardized air temperature anomaly at surface from the Gulf of Lions. Despite the differences in recruit abundance among GSAs, their mean annual condition oscillated around the same basal value during most of the time series, pointing to density-dependent mortality rates as an important mechanism stabilizing hake recruitment to levels close to the carrying capacity when populations do not suffer recruitment overfishing. This pattern changed when the decreasing recruit abundance trend drove GSA 6 condition values persistently above those of the rest of the GSAs. According to our hypothesis, hake in GSA 6 is in recruitment overfishing.
