    The projected warming, nutrient decline, changes in net primary production, deoxygenation and acidification of the global ocean will affect marine ecosystems during the 21st century. Here, the climate change-related impacts on the marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea in the middle and at the end of the 21st century are assessed using high-resolution projections of the physical and biogeochemical state of the basin under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5. In both scenarios, the analysis shows changes in the dissolved nutrient contents of the euphotic and intermediate layers of the basin, net primary production, phytoplankton respiration and carbon stock (including phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacterial biomass and particulate organic matter). The projections also show uniform surface and subsurface reductions in the oxygen concentration driven by the warming of the water column and by the increase in ecosystem respiration as well as an acidification signal in the upper water column linked to the increase in the dissolved inorganic carbon content of the water column due to CO2 absorption from the atmosphere and the increase in respiration. The projected changes are stronger in the RCP8.5 (worst-case) scenario and, in particular, in the eastern Mediterranean due to the limited influence of the exchanges in the Strait of Gibraltar in that part of the basin. On the other hand, analysis of the projections under the RCP4.5 emission scenario shows a tendency to recover the values observed at the beginning of the 21st century for several biogeochemical variables in the second half of the period. This result supports the idea – possibly based on the existence in a system such as the Mediterranean Sea of a certain buffer capacity and renewal rate – that the implementation of policies for reducing CO2 emission could indeed be effective and could contribute to the foundation of ocean sustainability science and policies.

    Electronic decision-support tools are becoming an essential component of government strategies to tackle non-native species invasions. This study describes the development and application of a multilingual electronic decision-support tool for screening terrestrial animals under current and future climate conditions: the Terrestrial Animal Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (TAS-ISK). As an adaptation of the widely employed Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), the TAS-ISK question template inherits from the original Weed Risk Assessment (WRA) and related WRA-type toolkits and complies with the ‘minimum requirements’ for use with the recent European Regulation on invasive alien species of concern. The TAS-ISK consists of 49 basic questions on the species’ biogeographical/historical traits and its biological/ecological interactions, and of 6 additional questions to predict how climate change is likely to influence the risks of introduction, establishment, dispersal and impact of the screened species. Following a description of the main features of this decision-support tool as a turnkey software application and of its graphical user interface with support for 32 languages, sample screenings are provided in different risk assessment areas for one representative species of each of the main taxonomic groups of terrestrial animals supported by the toolkit: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, annelids, insects, molluscs, nematodes, and platyhelminths. The highest-scoring species were the red earthworm Lumbricus rubellus for the Aegean region of Turkey and the New Zealand flatworm Arthurdendyus triangulatus for Croatia. It is anticipated that adoption of this toolkit will mirror that of the worldwide employed AS-ISK, hence allowing to share information and inform decisions for the prevention of entry and/or dispersal of (high-risk) non-native terrestrial animal species – a crucial step to implement early-stage control and eradication measures as part of rapid-response strategies to counteract biological invasions.

Ovaj tip generatora je interesantan jer se ugrađuje u sve vrste brodova s visokonaponskim elektroenergetskim sustavom. Rad sadrži detaljne upute za provjeru mehaničke instalacije, električnih instalacija, otpora izolacije, automatskog regulatora napona, postupak pokretanja, isključivanje, puštanje u pogon, električne zaštite, ispitivanje, montažu, centriranje, nadzor i preventivno održavanje. Objašnjen je značaj preventivnog održavanja i svih razina korektivnog održavanja. Dane su upute za dijagnosticiranje i rješavanje svih mogućih problema u radu generatora. This thesis deals with the 6600 V, 60 Hz, 1069, 514 rpm ship's high-voltage generator AMG 1600LH14 LSE. This particular generator is interesting because it can be installed in all types of ships with a high-voltage power system. The thesis contains detailed instructions for checking mechanical installations, electrical installations, insulation resistance, automatic voltage regulator, start-up procedure, shutdown, commissioning, electrical protection, testing, assembly, centering, supervision and preventive maintenance. The importance of preventive maintenance and all levels of corrective maintenance is explained. Instructions are given for diagnoses and resolving all possible malfunctions in operation.

    Ecosystem models are important tools for the implementation of Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM), especially in highly exploited ecosystems affected by climate change, such as the Mediterranean Sea. Herein, we present the development of an Ecopath ecosystem model for the North Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean) in the early 1990s, as well as the parameterization of the temporal dynamic module (Ecosim) after fitting to catch and relative biomass time series for the period 1993-2020. The Ecosim model included as drivers (i) fishing, assuming a technology creep factor of 2% annual increase (0.79% for bottom trawls), (ii) Sea Surface Temperature, (iii) trophic interactions and (iv) a Primary Production (PP) Anomaly which was positively correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation of the previous year, highlighting the synergistic effect of environmental and anthropogenic processes during the three-decades hindcast period. Trends in biomasses, catches and ecosystem indicators were characterized by a decline from 1993 to 2010 and a strong recovery thereafter. Sea warming scenarios for the period 2021-2050 indicated contrasting responses to increased temperature among the main commercial groups, while simulations of changes in productivity had relatively straightforward effects. Two scenarios of 10% and 25% reduction in fishing effort revealed quick increases in the biomass of most commercial species, though coupled with lower catches due to reduced fishing, except for few groups that their population increase was remarkably high. Although the 25% effort reduction resulted in high recoveries in the short term, it didn’t necessarily lead to constantly high biomasses resulting in reduced catches towards the end of the forecast period for some groups, in contrast to the 10% reduction. When impacts of reduced productivity were added to temperature effects, the model forecasted lower biomass increases for the winners of sea warming and even higher decreases for the losers. Biomass losses were compensated by a 10% reduction in fishing effort, but this was not overall enough to counterbalance losses in catches. The model developed here contributes to better elucidate observed changes in the past and to hind directions of change in future simulations, as well as to advance EBFM in the area.

    The present Special Issue brought together recent research findings on the delicate but ever-growing problem of the impact of urban wastewaters along the Adriatic coasts. The 11 research contributions originated from the two Interreg project AdSWiM and WATERCARE. The published papers highlight several aspects related to the environ-mental protection through cross-cutting technological solutions, to treat wastewater, to control chemical and microbiological pollution, to manage the wastewater with a cross border vision, to share knowledge in order to better manage the bathing waters and protect the Adriatic Sea. This Special Issue also intended to point out the im-portance of communication and knowledge transfer from science and research to the general public as a paramount step to raise people's awareness about environmental issues.

    Riparian zones are the paragon of transitional ecosystems, providing critical habitat and ecosystem services that are especially threatened by global change. Following consultation with experts, 10 key challenges were identified to be addressed for riparian vegetation science and management improvement: (1) Create a distinct scientific community by establishing stronger bridges between disciplines; (2) Make riparian vegetation more visible and appreciated in society and policies; (3) Improve knowledge regarding biodiversity— ecosystem functioning links; (4) Manage spatial scale and context-based issues; (5) Improve knowledge on social dimensions of riparian vegetation; (6) Anticipate responses to emergent issues and future trajectories; (7) Enhance tools to quantify and prioritize ecosystem services; (8) Improve numerical modeling and simulation tools; (9) Calibrate methods and increase data availability for better indicators and monitoring practices and transferability; and (10) Undertake scientific validation of best management practices.     Subterranean ecosystems are among the most widespread environments on Earth, yet we still have poor knowledge of their biodiversity. To raise awareness of subterranean ecosystems, the essential services they provide, and their unique conservation challenges, 2021 and 2022 were designated International Years of Caves and Karst. As these ecosystems have traditionally been overlooked in global conservation agendas and multilateral agreements, a quantitative assessment of solution-based approaches to safeguard subterranean biota and associated habitats is timely. This assessment allows researchers and practitioners to understand the progress made and research needs in subterranean ecology and management. We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed and grey literature focused on subterranean ecosystems globally (terrestrial, freshwater, and saltwater systems), to quantify the available evidence-base for the effectiveness of conservation interventions. We selected 708 publications from the years 1964 to 2021 that discussed, recommended, or implemented 1,954 conservation interventions in subterranean ecosystems. We noted a steep increase in the number of studies from the 2000s while, surprisingly, the proportion of studies quantifying the impact of conservation interventions has steadily and significantly decreased in recent years. The effectiveness of 31% of conservation interventions has been tested statistically. We further highlight that 64% of the reported research occurred in the Palearctic and Nearctic biogeographic regions. Assessments of the effectiveness of conservation interventions were heavily biased towards indirect measures (monitoring and risk assessment), a limited sample of organisms (mostly arthropods and bats), and more accessible systems (terrestrial caves). Our results indicate that most conservation science in the field of subterranean biology does not apply a rigorous quantitative approach, resulting in sparse evidence for the effectiveness of interventions. This raises the important question of how to make conservation efforts more feasible to implement, cost-effective, and long-lasting. Although there is no single remedy, we propose a suite of potential solutions to focus our efforts better towards increasing statistical testing and stress the importance of standardising study reporting to facilitate meta-analytical exercises. We also provide a database summarising the available literature, which will help to build quantitative knowledge about interventions likely to yield the greatest impacts depending upon the subterranean species and habitats of interest. We view this as a starting point to shift away from the widespread tendency of recommending conservation interventions based on anecdotal and expert-based information rather than scientific evidence, without quantitatively testing their effectiveness.     Purpose The objective of this study was to provide insights into the most recent responses of sediments to climate change and their capability to sequester atmospheric carbon (C). Methods Three sediment cores were collected, one from the western Black Sea, and two from the southern Adriatic Sea. Cores were extruded and sectioned into 1 cm or 0.5 cm intervals. Sections were frozen, weighed, freeze-dried, and then weighed again to obtain dry weights. Freeze-dried samples were dated by using lead 210 (Pb-210) and cesium 137/ americium 241 (Cs-137/Am-241). Organic and inorganic C were determined by combustion. PArticle size distribution was determined using a Beckman Coulter pArticle size analyzer (LS 13,320; Beckman Coulter Inc.). Mineralogical analyses were carried out by a Philips X'Pert powder diffractometer. Results Sedimentation and organic and inorganic C accumulation rates increased with time in both the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea. The increase in accumulation rates continued after the global introduction in the early 1970s of controls on the release of phosphorus (P) into the environment and despite the reduced sediment yield of major rivers (Po and Danube). Therefore, the increased accumulation of organic and inorganic C in the sediments cannot be assigned only to nutrient availability. Instead, we suggest that the increase in organic C is the consequence of the increase in atmospheric C, which has made more carbon dioxide (CO2) available to phytoplankton, thus enabling more efficient photosynthesis. This process known as CO2 fertilization may increase the organic C accumulation in sediments. Simultaneously, the increase of sea temperatures decreases the calcite solubility resulting in increases of the inorganic C accumulation. Conclusion Our results suggest that long-term, general increases in accumulation rates of organic and inorganic C in sediments are the consequence of increases in atmospheric C. This shows that coastal sediments play an important role in C uptake and thus in regulating the Earth's climate.     The projected warming, nutrient decline, changes in net primary production, deoxygenation and acidification of the global ocean will affect marine ecosystems during the 21st century. Here, the climate change-related impacts on the marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea in the middle and at the end of the 21st century are assessed using high-resolution projections of the physical and biogeochemical state of the basin under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5. In both scenarios, the analysis shows changes in the dissolved nutrient contents of the euphotic and intermediate layers of the basin, net primary production, phytoplankton respiration and carbon stock (including phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacterial biomass and particulate organic matter). The projections also show uniform surface and subsurface reductions in the oxygen concentration driven by the warming of the water column and by the increase in ecosystem respiration as well as an acidification signal in the upper water column linked to the increase in the dissolved inorganic carbon content of the water column due to CO2 absorption from the atmosphere and the increase in respiration. The projected changes are stronger in the RCP8.5 (worst-case) scenario and, in particular, in the eastern Mediterranean due to the limited influence of the exchanges in the Strait of Gibraltar in that part of the basin. On the other hand, analysis of the projections under the RCP4.5 emission scenario shows a tendency to recover the values observed at the beginning of the 21st century for several biogeochemical variables in the second half of the period. This result supports the idea – possibly based on the existence in a system such as the Mediterranean Sea of a certain buffer capacity and renewal rate – that the implementation of policies for reducing CO2 emission could indeed be effective and could contribute to the foundation of ocean sustainability science and policies.

    Electronic decision-support tools are becoming an essential component of government strategies to tackle non-native species invasions. This study describes the development and application of a multilingual electronic decision-support tool for screening terrestrial animals under current and future climate conditions: the Terrestrial Animal Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (TAS-ISK). As an adaptation of the widely employed Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), the TAS-ISK question template inherits from the original Weed Risk Assessment (WRA) and related WRA-type toolkits and complies with the ‘minimum requirements’ for use with the recent European Regulation on invasive alien species of concern. The TAS-ISK consists of 49 basic questions on the species’ biogeographical/historical traits and its biological/ecological interactions, and of 6 additional questions to predict how climate change is likely to influence the risks of introduction, establishment, dispersal and impact of the screened species. Following a description of the main features of this decision-support tool as a turnkey software application and of its graphical user interface with support for 32 languages, sample screenings are provided in different risk assessment areas for one representative species of each of the main taxonomic groups of terrestrial animals supported by the toolkit: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, annelids, insects, molluscs, nematodes, and platyhelminths. The highest-scoring species were the red earthworm Lumbricus rubellus for the Aegean region of Turkey and the New Zealand flatworm Arthurdendyus triangulatus for Croatia. It is anticipated that adoption of this toolkit will mirror that of the worldwide employed AS-ISK, hence allowing to share information and inform decisions for the prevention of entry and/or dispersal of (high-risk) non-native terrestrial animal species – a crucial step to implement early-stage control and eradication measures as part of rapid-response strategies to counteract biological invasions.

This thesis deals with the 6600 V, 60 Hz, 1069, 514 rpm ship's high-voltage generator AMG 1600LH14 LSE. This particular generator is interesting because it can be installed in all types of ships with a high-voltage power system. The thesis contains detailed instructions for checking mechanical installations, electrical installations, insulation resistance, automatic voltage regulator, start-up procedure, shutdown, commissioning, electrical protection, testing, assembly, centering, supervision and preventive maintenance. The importance of preventive maintenance and all levels of corrective maintenance is explained. Instructions are given for diagnoses and resolving all possible malfunctions in operation.

    Ecosystem models are important tools for the implementation of Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM), especially in highly exploited ecosystems affected by climate change, such as the Mediterranean Sea. Herein, we present the development of an Ecopath ecosystem model for the North Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean) in the early 1990s, as well as the parameterization of the temporal dynamic module (Ecosim) after fitting to catch and relative biomass time series for the period 1993-2020. The Ecosim model included as drivers (i) fishing, assuming a technology creep factor of 2% annual increase (0.79% for bottom trawls), (ii) Sea Surface Temperature, (iii) trophic interactions and (iv) a Primary Production (PP) Anomaly which was positively correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation of the previous year, highlighting the synergistic effect of environmental and anthropogenic processes during the three-decades hindcast period. Trends in biomasses, catches and ecosystem indicators were characterized by a decline from 1993 to 2010 and a strong recovery thereafter. Sea warming scenarios for the period 2021-2050 indicated contrasting responses to increased temperature among the main commercial groups, while simulations of changes in productivity had relatively straightforward effects. Two scenarios of 10% and 25% reduction in fishing effort revealed quick increases in the biomass of most commercial species, though coupled with lower catches due to reduced fishing, except for few groups that their population increase was remarkably high. Although the 25% effort reduction resulted in high recoveries in the short term, it didn’t necessarily lead to constantly high biomasses resulting in reduced catches towards the end of the forecast period for some groups, in contrast to the 10% reduction. When impacts of reduced productivity were added to temperature effects, the model forecasted lower biomass increases for the winners of sea warming and even higher decreases for the losers. Biomass losses were compensated by a 10% reduction in fishing effort, but this was not overall enough to counterbalance losses in catches. The model developed here contributes to better elucidate observed changes in the past and to hind directions of change in future simulations, as well as to advance EBFM in the area.

    The present Special Issue brought together recent research findings on the delicate but ever-growing problem of the impact of urban wastewaters along the Adriatic coasts. The 11 research contributions originated from the two Interreg project AdSWiM and WATERCARE. The published papers highlight several aspects related to the environ-mental protection through cross-cutting technological solutions, to treat wastewater, to control chemical and microbiological pollution, to manage the wastewater with a cross border vision, to share knowledge in order to better manage the bathing waters and protect the Adriatic Sea. This Special Issue also intended to point out the im-portance of communication and knowledge transfer from science and research to the general public as a paramount step to raise people's awareness about environmental issues.

    Riparian zones are the paragon of transitional ecosystems, providing critical habitat and ecosystem services that are especially threatened by global change. Following consultation with experts, 10 key challenges were identified to be addressed for riparian vegetation science and management improvement: (1) Create a distinct scientific community by establishing stronger bridges between disciplines; (2) Make riparian vegetation more visible and appreciated in society and policies; (3) Improve knowledge regarding biodiversity— ecosystem functioning links; (4) Manage spatial scale and context-based issues; (5) Improve knowledge on social dimensions of riparian vegetation; (6) Anticipate responses to emergent issues and future trajectories; (7) Enhance tools to quantify and prioritize ecosystem services; (8) Improve numerical modeling and simulation tools; (9) Calibrate methods and increase data availability for better indicators and monitoring practices and transferability; and (10) Undertake scientific validation of best management practices.     Subterranean ecosystems are among the most widespread environments on Earth, yet we still have poor knowledge of their biodiversity. To raise awareness of subterranean ecosystems, the essential services they provide, and their unique conservation challenges, 2021 and 2022 were designated International Years of Caves and Karst. As these ecosystems have traditionally been overlooked in global conservation agendas and multilateral agreements, a quantitative assessment of solution-based approaches to safeguard subterranean biota and associated habitats is timely. This assessment allows researchers and practitioners to understand the progress made and research needs in subterranean ecology and management. We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed and grey literature focused on subterranean ecosystems globally (terrestrial, freshwater, and saltwater systems), to quantify the available evidence-base for the effectiveness of conservation interventions. We selected 708 publications from the years 1964 to 2021 that discussed, recommended, or implemented 1,954 conservation interventions in subterranean ecosystems. We noted a steep increase in the number of studies from the 2000s while, surprisingly, the proportion of studies quantifying the impact of conservation interventions has steadily and significantly decreased in recent years. The effectiveness of 31% of conservation interventions has been tested statistically. We further highlight that 64% of the reported research occurred in the Palearctic and Nearctic biogeographic regions. Assessments of the effectiveness of conservation interventions were heavily biased towards indirect measures (monitoring and risk assessment), a limited sample of organisms (mostly arthropods and bats), and more accessible systems (terrestrial caves). Our results indicate that most conservation science in the field of subterranean biology does not apply a rigorous quantitative approach, resulting in sparse evidence for the effectiveness of interventions. This raises the important question of how to make conservation efforts more feasible to implement, cost-effective, and long-lasting. Although there is no single remedy, we propose a suite of potential solutions to focus our efforts better towards increasing statistical testing and stress the importance of standardising study reporting to facilitate meta-analytical exercises. We also provide a database summarising the available literature, which will help to build quantitative knowledge about interventions likely to yield the greatest impacts depending upon the subterranean species and habitats of interest. We view this as a starting point to shift away from the widespread tendency of recommending conservation interventions based on anecdotal and expert-based information rather than scientific evidence, without quantitatively testing their effectiveness.     Purpose The objective of this study was to provide insights into the most recent responses of sediments to climate change and their capability to sequester atmospheric carbon (C). Methods Three sediment cores were collected, one from the western Black Sea, and two from the southern Adriatic Sea. Cores were extruded and sectioned into 1 cm or 0.5 cm intervals. Sections were frozen, weighed, freeze-dried, and then weighed again to obtain dry weights. Freeze-dried samples were dated by using lead 210 (Pb-210) and cesium 137/ americium 241 (Cs-137/Am-241). Organic and inorganic C were determined by combustion. PArticle size distribution was determined using a Beckman Coulter pArticle size analyzer (LS 13,320; Beckman Coulter Inc.). Mineralogical analyses were carried out by a Philips X'Pert powder diffractometer. Results Sedimentation and organic and inorganic C accumulation rates increased with time in both the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea. The increase in accumulation rates continued after the global introduction in the early 1970s of controls on the release of phosphorus (P) into the environment and despite the reduced sediment yield of major rivers (Po and Danube). Therefore, the increased accumulation of organic and inorganic C in the sediments cannot be assigned only to nutrient availability. Instead, we suggest that the increase in organic C is the consequence of the increase in atmospheric C, which has made more carbon dioxide (CO2) available to phytoplankton, thus enabling more efficient photosynthesis. This process known as CO2 fertilization may increase the organic C accumulation in sediments. Simultaneously, the increase of sea temperatures decreases the calcite solubility resulting in increases of the inorganic C accumulation. Conclusion Our results suggest that long-term, general increases in accumulation rates of organic and inorganic C in sediments are the consequence of increases in atmospheric C. This shows that coastal sediments play an important role in C uptake and thus in regulating the Earth's climate.
