description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Preprint 2004Publisher:Oxford University Press (OUP) Authors: Arshakian, T. G.; Longair, M. S.;Arshakian, T. G.; Longair, M. S.;A simple integral relation is obtained for the distribution functions of jet speeds and jet-counterjet flux asymmetries of classical double radio sources. Analytic expressions relating the mean jet speed and the mean jet flux asymmetry, and their variances are derived. The results are considered in the light of orientation-based unified schemes, and an analytical equation for the critical angle separating quasars and radio galaxies is derived. The mean jet speeds of classical double radio sources are estimated using the asymmetry of jet-counterjet flux densities taken from the 3CRR and B2 samples. For FRI radio sources the mean jet speed is ~0.54c (with a standard error SE=0.03c), while for FRII low-redshift radio galaxies and intermediate redshift quasars the values found are ~0.4c (SE=0.06c) and >0.6c respectively. 7 pages, 2 figures. Petrological data and recently published U/Pb zircon SHRIMP ages reveal a protracted Variscan magmatic evolution in the Strzelin Massif (SW Poland), with three main stages of granitoid plutonism: 1 – tonalitic I, 2 – granodioritic and 3 – tonalitic II/granitic. The granitoids of the second and third stages form the Strzelin intrusion that is composed of three varieties: medium-grained biotite granite, fine-grained biotite granite and fine-grained biotite-muscovite granite. New SHRIMP data show that the medium-grained and fine-grained biotite granites comprise different zircon populations that reflect complex and prolonged plutonic processes. Two distinct magmatic events seem to be represented by well-defined zircon populations with apparent 206 Pb/ 238 U ages of 303 ± 2 Ma in the medium-grained biotite granite, and 283 ± 8 Ma in the fine-grained biotite granite. These dates, however, do not necessarily reflect the true magmatic ages, possibly being “rejuvenated” by radiogenic lead loss in zircons (impossible to resolve based on routine SHRIMP data). Based on field evidence, the third variety, the biotite-muscovite granite, postdates both types of biotite granites. The petrographic and geochemical features, including Nd isotope signature, along with various zircon inheritance patterns and ages, suggest that the parental magmas of the three granites originated from different crustal sources and were emplaced during three successive magmatic pulses.

Western Anatolia is one of the most seismically active regions worldwide. To date, the paleoseismic history of many major faults, in terms of recurrence intervals of destructive earthquakes, their magnitude, displacement, and slip rates is poorly understood. Regional crustal extension has produced major horst-graben systems bounded by kilometer-scale normal faults locally in carbonates, along which vertical crustal displacements occurred. In this study, we explore the seismic history of western Anatolia using Cl-36 exposure dating through study of well-preserved carbonate normal fault scarps. To accomplish this, Cl-36 concentrations in 214 samples from fault plane transects on the Rahmiye and oren fault scarps were measured and compared with existing Cl-36 measurements of 370 samples on five fault scraps in western Anatolia. At least 20 seismic events have been reconstructed over the past 16 kyr. The age correlation of the seismic events implies four phases of high seismic activity in western Anatolia, at around 2, 4, 6, and 8 ka. Slips are modeled ranging between 0.6 to 4.2 m per seismic event, but are probably the result of clustered earthquakes of maximum magnitude 6.5 to 7.1. While the average slip rates have values of 0.3 to 1.9 mm/yr, incremental slip rates of the faults range greater than 0.1 to 2.2 mm/yr, showing more activity mostly through late Holocene. Our finding reveals high capability of cosmogenic Cl-36 dating to explore seismic behavior of active faults beyond the existing earthquake records. A Yugoslav was an ethnic term used by some people who neither had strong ethnic identity nor wished to express it, but who still had patriotic feelings for the country and did not want their ethnicity to be recorded as undeclared. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the term “Yugoslav” was used as a synonym for “South Slav”, especially to denote Slavic population in Austria-Hungary. After the Worl War I, in 1918, when South Slavic lands were united in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the term Yugoslav was used to refer to any of its inhabitants, particularly of Southern Slavic origin. In order to resolve a deep political crisis brought on by ethnic tensions by assuming dictatorial powers, the King Alexander renamed the country into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and officially pronounced a single Yugoslav nation with three tribes in 1929. The Yugoslav ethnic designation was thus for a time imposed on all South Slavs in Yugoslavia. Changes in Yugoslav politics after the King Alexander’s death in 1934 ended this policy, but the designation continued to be used by some people. In the second part of 20th century, people often declared as Yugoslavs. After the break up of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, most Yugoslavs declared themselves as Serbs, Croats, Bosnian, Slovenes, Macedonians, Montenegrins etc, but the designation still continued to be used. In the 2002 census, 49,881 inhabitants of vojvodina declared themselves as Yugoslavs. Today, Yugoslav population represents 2.5 % of the population of Vojvodina and only 1.1% of the population of Serbia. 61.8% of the overall number of Yugoslav population in Serbia lives in Vojvodina. The greatest concentration is in the biggest towns in Vojvodina (Novi Sad, Subotica and Sombor) (Ministry of Human and Minority Rights, 2004). Since Vojvodina is a multiethnic area, the Yugoslav nation was selected for this research. The number of Yugoslav population in Vojvodina Province Big changes in the number of Yugoslav population in Vojvodina Province are recorded. Past and present declaration as Yugoslav in Vojvodina Province can be observed through their age structure. Some people consider Yugoslavs an artificial nation. In their short history they experienced alternations in the population number (appeared, increased, culminated and decreased). Their age structure answers the following question: Does this nation have a future? Parameters of age structure can also show the degree of influence of demographic transition on the Yugoslav population. Yugoslav nation was established for the first time in the 1961 census, when only about three thousand people declared as Yugoslavs. They represented only 0.2% in the population of Vojvodina. Moreover, there was a growing tendency of declaring as Yugoslavs, especially among the Serbs. The number of Yugoslavs increased more than 14 times as recorded in the 1971 census. Significant growth was recorded in 1981 (Table 1). The Law from 1974 very insisted on the development of multiethnic structure of the population Vojvodina. This resulted in the fact that more and more people started to feel like Yugoslavs. According the 1991census, the largest number of Yugoslavs was recorded in Vojvodina. Their share was 8.7 % of the overall population of Vojvodina (Republic Office of Statistics, 2003). According to the last census, the number of Yugoslavs decreased almost 3.5 times (Graph 1). In 1961 and 1971, there were more males in the Yugoslav population, but later the situation changed. However, differences between the share of males and females were not significant.

Argon isotopic analyses were funded by NERC grant to I. Savov, IP-1690-1116. PJS was funded through a NERC studentship as part of the Leeds York Spheres Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) (grant number NE/L002574/1). Part of the field work and research were supported by base funding of the Institute of Geological Sciences (IGS) and a thematic project by the Science Committee of the Armenian Ministry of Education and Science (project #18 T-1E368). The post-collisional Syunik and Vardenis volcanic highlands, located in the southern Lesser Caucasus mountains (part of the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone) are host to over 200 monogenetic volcanoes, as well as 2 large Quaternary polygenetic volcanoes in the Syunik highland. The latter are overlain by lavas from the monogenetic volcanoes, suggesting there was a transition in the style of volcanic activity from large-volume central vent eruptions to dispersed small-volume eruptions. 12 new high quality 40Ar/39Ar ages are presented here, with 11 ages calculated by step-heating experiments on groundmass separates, and the final age obtained from total fusions of a population of sanidines. All the ages were younger than 1.5 Ma, except for one ignimbrite deposit whose sanidines gave an age of 6 Ma. While the bulk of the exposed products of post-collisional volcanism relate to Pleistocene activity, it is clear there has been active volcanism in the region since at least the late Miocene. All ages for monogenetic volcanoes in the Syunik highland are younger than 1 Ma, but to the north in Vardenis there is geochronological evidence of monogenetic volcanism at 1.4 and 1.3 Ma. An age of 1.3 Ma is determined for a lava flow from one of the polygenetic volcanoes- Tskhouk, and when combined with other ages helps constrain the timing of the polygenetic to monogenetic transition to around 1 Ma. The new ages illustrate a degree of spatio-temporal coupling in the formation of new vents, which could be related to pull-apart basins focussing ascending magmas. This coupling means that future eruptions are particularly likely to occur close to the sites of the most recent Holocene activity. The polygenetic to monogenetic transition is argued to be the result of a decreasing magma supply based on: (i) volume estimates for Holocene eruptions and for all monogenetic volcanoes and their lava flows in Syunik; and (ii) the volcanic stratigraphy of the Lesser Caucasus region which shows late Pliocene- early Pleistocene continental flood basalts being succeeded by a few large andesite-dacite volcanoes and then the most recent deposits consisting of small-volume scoria cones. The Syunik highland has the highest density of monogenetic centres in the Lesser Caucasus, which is taken to indicate this region has the highest magma flux, and was therefore the last location to transition to monogenetic volcanism, which is why the transition is most clearly seen there. There is no evidence from Sr-Nd-B isotope measurements for the exhaustion of fusible slab components in the mantle source, showing that an inherited slab signature can survive for millions of years after the end of subduction. Although volcanism in the Lesser Caucasus is currently waning, a future pulse of activity is possible. Publisher PDF Peer reviewed

Mrk 421 did not show any prominent flaring activity, but exhibited periods of historically low activity above 1 TeV (F_>1 TeV < 1.7 × 10^−12 ph cm^−2 s^−1) and in the 2–10 keV (X-ray) band (F|$_{2-10\, \mathrm{keV}}\lt 3.6\times 10^{-11}$| erg cm^−2 s^−1), during which the Swift-BAT data suggest an additional spectral component beyond the regular synchrotron emission. The highest flux variability occurs in X-rays and very high-energy (E > 0.1 TeV) γ-rays, which, despite the low activity, show a significant positive correlation with no time lag. The HR_keV and HR_TeV show the harder-when-brighter trend observed in many blazars, but the trend flattens at the highest fluxes, which suggests a change in the processes dominating the blazar variability. Enlarging our data set with data from years 2007 to 2014, we measured a positive correlation between the optical and the GeV emission over a range of about 60 d centred at time lag zero, and a positive correlation between the optical/GeV and the radio emission over a range of about 60 d centred at a time lag of |$43^{+9}_{-6}$| d. This observation is consistent with the radio-bright zone being located about 0.2 parsec downstream from the optical/GeV emission regions of the jet. The flux distributions are better described with a lognormal function in most of the energy bands probed, indicating that the variability in Mrk 421 is likely produced by a multiplicative process. Data taken that night by H.E.S.S. at large zenith angle reveal an exceptional number of gamma-ray photons at multi-TeV energies, with rapid flux variability and an energy coverage extending significantly up to 20 TeV. This data set is used to constrain Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) using two independent channels: a temporal approach considers the possibility of an energy dependence in the arrival time of gamma-rays, whereas a spectral approach considers the possibility of modifications to the interaction of VHE gamma-rays with extragalactic background light (EBL) photons. The non-detection of energy-dependent time delays and the non-observation of deviations between the measured spectrum and that of a supposed power-law intrinsic spectrum with standard EBL attenuation are used independently to derive strong constraints on the energy scale of LIV $(E_ {QG})$ in the subluminal scenario for linear and quadratic perturbations in the dispersion relation of photons. For the case of linear perturbations, the 95% confidence level limits obtained are $E_{QG,1} > 3.6 × 10^{17}$ GeV using the temporal approach and $E_{QG,1} > 2.6 × 10^{19}$ GeV using the spectral approach. For the case of quadratic perturbations, the limits obtained are $E_{QG,2} > 8.5 × 10^{10}$ GeV using the temporal approach and $E_{QG,2} > 7.8 × 10^{11}$ GeV using the spectral approach. description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Preprint 2004Publisher:Oxford University Press (OUP) Authors: Arshakian, T.

M.; Terrier, R.; Tibaldo, L.; Tiziani, D.; Tluczykont, M.; Trichard, C.;The blazar Mrk 501 ($z$ = 0.034) was observed at very-high-energy (VHE, E $\gtrsim$ 100 GeV) gamma-ray wavelengths during a bright flare on the night of 2014 June 23–24 (MJD 56832) with the H.E.S.S. phase-II array of Cherenkov telescopes.
