    We study the diffusive escape of cosmic rays from a central source inside a galaxy cluster to obtain the suppression in the outgoing flux appearing when the confinement times get comparable or larger than the age of the sources. We also discuss the attenuation of the flux due to the interactions of the cosmic rays with the cluster medium, which can be sizeable for heavy nuclei. The overall suppression in the total cosmic ray flux expected on Earth is important to understand the shape of the extragalactic contribution to the cosmic ray spectrum for E/Z < 1 EeV . This suppression can also be relevant to interpret the results of fits to composition-sensitive observables measured at ultra-high energies. Fil: Harari, Diego Dario.     Argentina is known for having one of the most extensive areas with high arsenic (As) concentration in groundwater in the world. These areas correspond to two main geological provinces, the Puna plateau and the Chaco-Pampean plain. In this large territory, there are some specific environments where the As concentration in groundwater is lower, and in some cases within the recommended limits for drinking water. In our study, we analyze and interpret the low arsenic concentrations reported for the Lerma valley, the easternmost intermontane basin of the Cordillera Oriental, located between the aforementioned high-arsenic geological provinces. The groundwater from this valley is used for the consumption of more than 600.000 inhabitants in the city of Salta and nearby towns. The incipient development of the valley since the late Miocene and the subsequent tectonic and climatic evolution favored low As concentrations with respect to the Puna and the Chaco-Pampean plain. The high-energy sedimentary environments thatcharacterized the area during Plio-Quaternary times and the composition of the sediments have controlled the characteristics of sediments the multilayered aquifer. Moreover, the absence of geogenic arsenic sources, climate, high rain infiltration rate, near neutralpH,redox conditions, and wells construction with screens settledincoarse productive layers favor groundwater of good quality.The geological and tectonic evolution of the Lerma valley could be extrapolated to other similar valleys in the NW of Argentinaand can be useful as tool for exploration of good quality groundwater.     Abstract The reactivation of existing faults has long been recognized to control the location and style of deformation in orogenic systems including the Sierras Pampeanas in the southern Central Andes; however, it can remain difficult to resolve the timing and fault kinematics across multiple orogenic phases. In the Sierras Pampeanas, basement-cored range-bounding faults mark a Paleozoic terrane boundary and are seismically active; however, the protracted history of deformation along this lithospheric-scale regional fault system - located ~400 km from the plate boundary - has been poorly constrained. In this study, we present new apatite (U–Th-Sm)/He and fission track thermochronology data and thermal history models from ten samples from the Sierra de Valle Fertil-La Huerta in the Western Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina. The spatio-temporal patterns of rock heating and cooling identified by our thermal history models throughout this fault system are consistent with four discrete phases of deformation. Thermal patterns indicative of Mesozoic extensional deformation and latest Miocene - Pliocene compressional deformation corroborate previous interpretations of regional deformation episodes in the Sierras Pampeanas. Our study also identifies a period of middle-Miocene cooling that revises the location of the Andean thrust front. This episode of deformation was previously unrecognized in the Sierras Pampeanas and is contemporaneous with thin-skinned deformation in the adjacent Precordillera thrust belt. A Paleogene phase of cooling may also support a phase of compressional deformation in the Sierras Pampeanas during a period in which neutral tectonic conditions have been proposed along the Andean margin. Our findings outline a history of fault reactivation suggesting that the long-lived fault systems in the Sierras Pampeanas are sensitive to plate-margin processes.

    Introducción: En los estudios espirométricos se recomienda que cada población cuente con sus propios valores de referencia debido a condiciones regionales y a características de tipo étnico, etario, social, geográfico y climático. Estudios previos muestran elevados niveles de material particulado, hidrocarburos policíclicos y compuestos volátiles en el aire de La Plata y alrededores, con correlación entre exposición crónica a contaminantes y efectos adversos sobre desarrollo y función pulmonar. El objetivo fue establecer valores de referencia regionales para parámetros espirométricos en jóvenes de La Plata, siguiendo las recomendaciones de la American Thoracic Society (ATS) y la European Respiratory Society (ERS). Métodos: Estudio transversal, observacional y descriptivo. Se realizaron y analizaron 171 espirometrías a jóvenes sanos de 13-17 años. Se llevaron a cabo medidas de correlación, identificando las variables predictoras. Para las ecuaciones de predicción se ajustaron modelos de regresión en función del sexo. Resultados: La mayor correlación se encontró con talla y peso. Se desarrollaron ecuaciones para capacidad vital forzada (FVC) y volumen espiratorio forzado en el primer segundo (FEV1) según género. Discusión: El cálculo de nuevos parámetros con valores menores a los propuestos por un estudio en Barcelona y adaptados por la Sociedad Española de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica (SEPAR) confirmó la importancia de contar con valores de referencia regionales. Introduction: It is recommended that in spirometric studies each population have its own reference values due to regional conditions as well as ethnic, age, social, geographical and climatic characteristics. Previous studies show high levels of particulate matter, polycyclic hydrocarbons and volatile compounds in the air of La Plata city and surroundings, with correlation between chronic exposure to pollutants and adverse effects on lung development and function. The objective was to establish regional reference values for spirometric parameters in adolescents of La Plata, following the recommendations of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and European Respiratory Society (ERS). Methods: A cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study was carried out, performing and analyzing 171 spirometries in healthy young people between 13 and 17 years of age. Correlation measures were carried out to identify the predictive variables of spirometry. For the prediction equations, regression models were adjusted according to gender. Results: The highest correlation was found with height and weight. Equations were developed for forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) for each gender. Discussion: The calculation of new parameters, with values lower than those proposed by a study in Barcelona and adapted by the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), confirmed the importance of having regional reference values. Intraplate deformation has been described in several tectonic settings and recently in western central Argentina it has been proposed to explain the complex structural patterns developed between Early Jurassic and Cretaceous times along the Huincul deformation zone. We integrate new field data and detrital zircon ages of the exposed portion of the Huincul High that permit us to quantify the significance of this intraplate deformation in the relief generation. A stratigraphic and structural record of a Jurassic pulsed contractional deformation is derived from field surveys. It is documented through multiple unconformities and growth geometries linked to NE and E–W oriented growth structures extensively developed across the studied region. The pattern of zircon ages from the analyzed Late Jurassic successions indicates that they have a clear provenance from sources located along the Huincul deformation zone. The Tordillo Formation outcrops north of the Huincul High have a dominant provenance from the Andean Jurassic arc; while the Quebrada del Sapo Formation, south of the Huincul High, has a significant input from Late Triassic (220–200 Ma) and Late Permian (280–260 Ma) sources of the axial exposures of the Huincul High. Surface data, combined with detrital zircon ages proved to be a powerful method to confirm the presence of an ancient positive element developed within the southern Neuquén basin. Its genesis falls within the early history of the Huincul deformation zone, where several structural features indicate pulses of growth since Early Jurassic times prior to the main Andean contractional cycle that started in the Late Cretaceous. Therefore, these data document for the first time the importance of the early contractional phases in the relief construction in the southern Central Andes, reinforcing previous hypotheses about pre-Andean intraplate deformation concentrated along this extensive east–west oriented basement weakness zone.

    The fossil record of chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and chimaeroids) principally consists of isolated teeth, spines and dermal denticles, their cartilaginous skeleton being rarely preserved. Several Late Jurassic chondrichthyan assemblages have been studied in Europe based on large bulk samples, mainly in England, France, Germany and Spain. The first study of this kind in Switzerland is based on controlled excavations in Kimmeridgian deposits related to the construction of the A16 motorway in the Swiss Jura (Porrentruy, NW Switzerland). This study is based on more than 2000 isolated chondrichthyan remains (teeth, dental plates, spines and dermal denticles) and adds to our knowledge of the chondrichthyan distribution at a regional scale in Europe. We describe and identify this new fauna, define a new species of hybodont with crushing-type dentition (Asteracanthus udulfensis sp. nov.) and report for the first time the carcharhiniform Corysodon cirinensis in Switzerland. By the Late Jurassic, modern neoselachian sharks had overtaken hybodonts in European marine realms, the latter being gradually confined to brackish or freshwater environments. However, while the associated fauna of the Porrentruy platform indicates marine conditions, neoselachian sharks are surprisingly rare. The chondrichthyan assemblage is largely dominated by hybodonts, guitarfishes (rays) and chimaeroids that are all known to be euryhaline. This unexpected chondrichthyan faunal composition questions the presence of fresh to brackish water in the vicinity of the platform, and the occurrence of salinity fluctuations within a general context marine.     La sistemática de los elasmosáuridos no aristonectinos del Cretácico de la Patagonia Argentina es poco conocida, no habiendo ninguna especie válida reconocida actualmente. En esta contribución un nuevo elasmosáurido no aristonectino: Kawanectes lafquenianum nov. comb. proveniente de la Formación Allen (Campaniano superior—Maastrichtiano inferior) es diagnosticado. K. lafquenianum es un elasmosáurido no aristonectino de pequeño tamaño corporal que se caracteriza por la presencia de vértebras caudales con parapófisis fuertemente proyectadas lateralmente, presencia de barra pélvica, elevada proporción longitud del húmero / longitud del fémur (∼1,2) y una marcada proyección posterodistal del húmero que lleva una carilla articular accesoria. El análisis filogenético recupera a K. lafquenianum, estrechamente relacionado con Morenosaurus stocki, Vegasaurus molyi y los aristonectinos que muestran las relaciones entre los elasmosáuridos del norte de Patagonia, Antártida Occidental y la costa pacífica de USA. K. lafquenianum es parte de la fauna de las formaciones coetáneas Allen y La Colonia, que comprende aristonectinos indeterminados y policotílidos. Esta diversidad relativamente alta, con los tres morfotipos principales presentes (elasmosáuridos aristonectinos, elasmosáuridos no aristonectinos y policotílidos), es notable ya que el ambiente de depositación de la Formación Allen se ha inferido como marino marginal con intercalaciones de ambientes no marinos. The systematics of the Late Cretaceous non-aristonectine elasmosaurids from Argentinean Patagonia are poorly known as there is no valid species currently recognized. Here a new non-aristonectine elasmosaurid: Kawanectes lafquenianum nov. comb. from the late Campanian–early Maastrichtian Allen Formation is diagnosed. K. lafquenianum is a distinctively small-body sized non-aristonectine elasmosaurid characterized by caudal vertebrae with marked laterally projected parapophyses, presence of pelvic bar, high ratio (~1.2) between humerus/femur length and a large posterodistal projection of the humerus which bears a posterior accessory articular facet. A phylogenetic analysis recovered K. lafquenianum closely related with Morenosaurus stocki, Vegasaurus molyi, and Aristonectinae, showing the relationships between the elasmosaurids from Patagonia, Western Antarctic, and the Pacific coast of the USA. K. lafquenianum is part of the fauna of the coeval Allen and La Colonia formations that also comprises indeterminate aristonectines and polycotylids. This relatively high diversity plesiosaur fauna includes the three main morphotypes (aristonectines, non-aristonectine elasmosaurids and polycotylids), which is remarkable because the depositational environments of the Allen Formation have been inferred as marginal marine to non-marine environments.     La predicción del caudal máximo anual resulta de utilidad para la gestión de eventos extremos relacionados con crecidas. Para realizar estimaciones con bajo grado de incertidumbre es necesario contar con una gran cantidad de información hidrométrica. Las cuencas que integran el sistema hidrográfico del río Colorado presentan una topografía que dificulta el mantenimiento de las estaciones hidrométricas, razón por la cual, se carece de continuidad en los registros y se presentan en varios casos sectores sin aforar. La regionalización consiste en la transferencia de información de los sitios aforados a los no aforados para la predicción de caudales. El objeto del trabajo fue encontrar la función que relaciona el caudal máximo anual con las características climáticas y morfométricas de las cuencas. Para ello, se emplearon modelos de regresión simple. A partir de dicha relación y la curva de frecuencia regional es posible predecir caudales máximos anuales para diferentes períodos de retorno en cuencas sin aforo pertenecientes al sistema hidrográfico del río Colorado, Argentina. De los doce modelos analizados, los mejores resultados se presentan cuando la variable predictora es el área y perímetro de la cuenca. Los errores de los modelos de regionalización para diversos sitios del sistema resultaron entre el 6% y el 67%. Estos modelos constituyen una herramienta para la gestión de crecidas en el centro oeste argentino.

    Recientemente se propuso el concepto de degradación de la tierra neta nula como base para un futuro protocolo de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas de lucha contra la desertificación para reducir la degradación mundial de las tierras secas. Su objetivo es reducir la tasa de degradación de la tierra y aumentar la tasa de restauración de las tierras ya degradadas. Mientras que se reconoce el contexto socioeconómico que subyace a los procesos de degradación, hay un enfoque estrecho en la tierra y el suelo como el núcleo final que necesita ser protegido. The concept of Zero Net Land Degradation was recently proposed as the basis for a future protocol for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification to reduce global dryland degradation. It aims at reducing the rate of land degradation and increasing the rate of restoration of already degraded land. Whereas there is recognition of the socio-economic contexts that underlie degradation processes, there is a narrow focus on land and soil as the end core that needs to be protected. In particular, there is an essential human dimension to the sustainability of drylands that should be adequately tackled. In order to provide a wider perspective of the zero net degradation in drylands, I suggest considering the different livelihoods of rural households as a framework that encompasses the multidimensional perspective of desertification as a complex social–ecological problem.     Pollution and climate have an impact on pediatric respiratory diseases; few studies have assessed this in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.To assess the impact of the interaction between air pollutants and climate on the Emergency Department visits for acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRTI) in a children's hospital.Ecological, time-series study with generalized additive models that included total visits and visits for ALRTI to the Emergency Department between 2012 and 2016. A series with 7-day moving averages for ALRTI visits was founded as a bias control measure. Predictors were daily levels of air pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrous dioxide, particulate matter10 μ) and meteorological variables (temperature, humidity). Pollutants were measured at three monitoring stations. Temporal variables (day of the week, warm/cold semester) were controlled.There were 455 256 total visits; 17 298 accounted for visits for ALRTI. A correlation was established only between total visits and day of the week (Mondays and Saturdays, more visits; Thursdays, less visits). Less visits for ALRTI were recorded in the warm semester compared to the cold semester (relative risk = 0.23; 95 % confidence interval: 0.29-0.18; p0.001). One monitoring station did not show any correlation; the other two stations showed a weak correlation between carbon monoxide and particulate matter10 μ and visits for ALRTI.The season accurately accounts for the increased number of total visits and visits for ALRTI. Although there was a correlation between the level of certain pollutants and the number of visits, its impact was irrelevant.Introducción: La contaminación y el clima tienen impacto en la patología respiratoria en niños; pocos estudios lo evaluaron en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Objetivo: Evaluar el impacto de la interacción entre contaminantes atmosféricos y clima en las consultas por infección respiratoria aguda baja (IRAB) en un hospital pediátrico. Métodos: Estudio ecológico, de series temporales con modelos aditivos generalizados, que incluyó todas las consultas y consultas por IRAB (urgencias) entre 2012 y 2016. Para controlar sesgos, se conformó una serie con promedios móviles de 7 días para consultas por IRAB. Los predictores fueron niveles diarios de contaminantes atmosféricos (monóxido de carbono, dióxido nitroso, material particulado10 μ) y variables meteorológicas (temperatura, humedad). Los contaminantes fueron medidos en 3 estaciones de monitoreo. Se controló por variables temporales (día de la semana, semestre cálido/frío). Resultados: Las consultas totales fueron 455 256 y por IRAB 17 298. Solo consultas totales correlacionaron con día de la semana (lunes y sábados, más consultas y jueves, menos). El semestre cálido registró menos consultas por IRAB que el frío (riesgo relativo = 0,23; intervalo de confianza 95 %: 0,29-0,18; p0,001). Una estación de monitoreo no presentó ninguna correlación; las otras mostraron correlación débil entre monóxido de carbono y material particulado10 μ y consultas por IRAB. Conclusión: La época del año explica con precisión el incremento del número de consultas totales y por IRAB. Aunque el nivel de algunos contaminantes muestra correlación con el número de consultas, su impacto es irrelevante.

    We study the diffusive escape of cosmic rays from a central source inside a galaxy cluster to obtain the suppression in the outgoing flux appearing when the confinement times get comparable or larger than the age of the sources. We also discuss the attenuation of the flux due to the interactions of the cosmic rays with the cluster medium, which can be sizeable for heavy nuclei. The overall suppression in the total cosmic ray flux expected on Earth is important to understand the shape of the extragalactic contribution to the cosmic ray spectrum for E/Z < 1 EeV . This suppression can also be relevant to interpret the results of fits to composition-sensitive observables measured at ultra-high energies. Fil: Harari, Diego Dario.     Argentina is known for having one of the most extensive areas with high arsenic (As) concentration in groundwater in the world. These areas correspond to two main geological provinces, the Puna plateau and the Chaco-Pampean plain. In this large territory, there are some specific environments where the As concentration in groundwater is lower, and in some cases within the recommended limits for drinking water. In our study, we analyze and interpret the low arsenic concentrations reported for the Lerma valley, the easternmost intermontane basin of the Cordillera Oriental, located between the aforementioned high-arsenic geological provinces. The groundwater from this valley is used for the consumption of more than 600.000 inhabitants in the city of Salta and nearby towns. The incipient development of the valley since the late Miocene and the subsequent tectonic and climatic evolution favored low As concentrations with respect to the Puna and the Chaco-Pampean plain. The high-energy sedimentary environments thatcharacterized the area during Plio-Quaternary times and the composition of the sediments have controlled the characteristics of sediments the multilayered aquifer. Moreover, the absence of geogenic arsenic sources, climate, high rain infiltration rate, near neutralpH,redox conditions, and wells construction with screens settledincoarse productive layers favor groundwater of good quality.The geological and tectonic evolution of the Lerma valley could be extrapolated to other similar valleys in the NW of Argentinaand can be useful as tool for exploration of good quality groundwater.     Abstract The reactivation of existing faults has long been recognized to control the location and style of deformation in orogenic systems including the Sierras Pampeanas in the southern Central Andes; however, it can remain difficult to resolve the timing and fault kinematics across multiple orogenic phases. In the Sierras Pampeanas, basement-cored range-bounding faults mark a Paleozoic terrane boundary and are seismically active; however, the protracted history of deformation along this lithospheric-scale regional fault system - located ~400 km from the plate boundary - has been poorly constrained. In this study, we present new apatite (U–Th-Sm)/He and fission track thermochronology data and thermal history models from ten samples from the Sierra de Valle Fertil-La Huerta in the Western Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina. The spatio-temporal patterns of rock heating and cooling identified by our thermal history models throughout this fault system are consistent with four discrete phases of deformation. Thermal patterns indicative of Mesozoic extensional deformation and latest Miocene - Pliocene compressional deformation corroborate previous interpretations of regional deformation episodes in the Sierras Pampeanas. Our study also identifies a period of middle-Miocene cooling that revises the location of the Andean thrust front. This episode of deformation was previously unrecognized in the Sierras Pampeanas and is contemporaneous with thin-skinned deformation in the adjacent Precordillera thrust belt. A Paleogene phase of cooling may also support a phase of compressional deformation in the Sierras Pampeanas during a period in which neutral tectonic conditions have been proposed along the Andean margin. Our findings outline a history of fault reactivation suggesting that the long-lived fault systems in the Sierras Pampeanas are sensitive to plate-margin processes.

    Introducción: En los estudios espirométricos se recomienda que cada población cuente con sus propios valores de referencia debido a condiciones regionales y a características de tipo étnico, etario, social, geográfico y climático. Estudios previos muestran elevados niveles de material particulado, hidrocarburos policíclicos y compuestos volátiles en el aire de La Plata y alrededores, con correlación entre exposición crónica a contaminantes y efectos adversos sobre desarrollo y función pulmonar. El objetivo fue establecer valores de referencia regionales para parámetros espirométricos en jóvenes de La Plata, siguiendo las recomendaciones de la American Thoracic Society (ATS) y la European Respiratory Society (ERS). Métodos: Estudio transversal, observacional y descriptivo. Se realizaron y analizaron 171 espirometrías a jóvenes sanos de 13-17 años. Se llevaron a cabo medidas de correlación, identificando las variables predictoras. Para las ecuaciones de predicción se ajustaron modelos de regresión en función del sexo. Resultados: La mayor correlación se encontró con talla y peso. Se desarrollaron ecuaciones para capacidad vital forzada (FVC) y volumen espiratorio forzado en el primer segundo (FEV1) según género. Discusión: El cálculo de nuevos parámetros con valores menores a los propuestos por un estudio en Barcelona y adaptados por la Sociedad Española de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica (SEPAR) confirmó la importancia de contar con valores de referencia regionales. Introduction: It is recommended that in spirometric studies each population have its own reference values due to regional conditions as well as ethnic, age, social, geographical and climatic characteristics. Previous studies show high levels of particulate matter, polycyclic hydrocarbons and volatile compounds in the air of La Plata city and surroundings, with correlation between chronic exposure to pollutants and adverse effects on lung development and function. The objective was to establish regional reference values for spirometric parameters in adolescents of La Plata, following the recommendations of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and European Respiratory Society (ERS). Methods: A cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study was carried out, performing and analyzing 171 spirometries in healthy young people between 13 and 17 years of age. Correlation measures were carried out to identify the predictive variables of spirometry. For the prediction equations, regression models were adjusted according to gender. Results: The highest correlation was found with height and weight. Equations were developed for forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) for each gender. Discussion: The calculation of new parameters, with values lower than those proposed by a study in Barcelona and adapted by the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), confirmed the importance of having regional reference values. Intraplate deformation has been described in several tectonic settings and recently in western central Argentina it has been proposed to explain the complex structural patterns developed between Early Jurassic and Cretaceous times along the Huincul deformation zone. We integrate new field data and detrital zircon ages of the exposed portion of the Huincul High that permit us to quantify the significance of this intraplate deformation in the relief generation. A stratigraphic and structural record of a Jurassic pulsed contractional deformation is derived from field surveys. It is documented through multiple unconformities and growth geometries linked to NE and E–W oriented growth structures extensively developed across the studied region. The pattern of zircon ages from the analyzed Late Jurassic successions indicates that they have a clear provenance from sources located along the Huincul deformation zone. The Tordillo Formation outcrops north of the Huincul High have a dominant provenance from the Andean Jurassic arc; while the Quebrada del Sapo Formation, south of the Huincul High, has a significant input from Late Triassic (220–200 Ma) and Late Permian (280–260 Ma) sources of the axial exposures of the Huincul High. Surface data, combined with detrital zircon ages proved to be a powerful method to confirm the presence of an ancient positive element developed within the southern Neuquén basin. Its genesis falls within the early history of the Huincul deformation zone, where several structural features indicate pulses of growth since Early Jurassic times prior to the main Andean contractional cycle that started in the Late Cretaceous. Therefore, these data document for the first time the importance of the early contractional phases in the relief construction in the southern Central Andes, reinforcing previous hypotheses about pre-Andean intraplate deformation concentrated along this extensive east–west oriented basement weakness zone.

    The fossil record of chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and chimaeroids) principally consists of isolated teeth, spines and dermal denticles, their cartilaginous skeleton being rarely preserved. Several Late Jurassic chondrichthyan assemblages have been studied in Europe based on large bulk samples, mainly in England, France, Germany and Spain. The first study of this kind in Switzerland is based on controlled excavations in Kimmeridgian deposits related to the construction of the A16 motorway in the Swiss Jura (Porrentruy, NW Switzerland). This study is based on more than 2000 isolated chondrichthyan remains (teeth, dental plates, spines and dermal denticles) and adds to our knowledge of the chondrichthyan distribution at a regional scale in Europe. We describe and identify this new fauna, define a new species of hybodont with crushing-type dentition (Asteracanthus udulfensis sp. nov.) and report for the first time the carcharhiniform Corysodon cirinensis in Switzerland. By the Late Jurassic, modern neoselachian sharks had overtaken hybodonts in European marine realms, the latter being gradually confined to brackish or freshwater environments. However, while the associated fauna of the Porrentruy platform indicates marine conditions, neoselachian sharks are surprisingly rare. The chondrichthyan assemblage is largely dominated by hybodonts, guitarfishes (rays) and chimaeroids that are all known to be euryhaline.     La sistemática de los elasmosáuridos no aristonectinos del Cretácico de la Patagonia Argentina es poco conocida, no habiendo ninguna especie válida reconocida actualmente. En esta contribución un nuevo elasmosáurido no aristonectino: Kawanectes lafquenianum nov. comb. proveniente de la Formación Allen (Campaniano superior—Maastrichtiano inferior) es diagnosticado. K. lafquenianum es un elasmosáurido no aristonectino de pequeño tamaño corporal que se caracteriza por la presencia de vértebras caudales con parapófisis fuertemente proyectadas lateralmente, presencia de barra pélvica, elevada proporción longitud del húmero / longitud del fémur (∼1,2) y una marcada proyección posterodistal del húmero que lleva una carilla articular accesoria. El análisis filogenético recupera a K. lafquenianum, estrechamente relacionado con Morenosaurus stocki, Vegasaurus molyi y los aristonectinos que muestran las relaciones entre los elasmosáuridos del norte de Patagonia, Antártida Occidental y la costa pacífica de USA. K. lafquenianum es parte de la fauna de las formaciones coetáneas Allen y La Colonia, que comprende aristonectinos indeterminados y policotílidos. Esta diversidad relativamente alta, con los tres morfotipos principales presentes (elasmosáuridos aristonectinos, elasmosáuridos no aristonectinos y policotílidos), es notable ya que el ambiente de depositación de la Formación Allen se ha inferido como marino marginal con intercalaciones de ambientes no marinos. The systematics of the Late Cretaceous non-aristonectine elasmosaurids from Argentinean Patagonia are poorly known as there is no valid species currently recognized. Here a new non-aristonectine elasmosaurid: Kawanectes lafquenianum nov. comb. from the late Campanian–early Maastrichtian Allen Formation is diagnosed. K. lafquenianum is a distinctively small-body sized non-aristonectine elasmosaurid characterized by caudal vertebrae with marked laterally projected parapophyses, presence of pelvic bar, high ratio (~1.2) between humerus/femur length and a large posterodistal projection of the humerus which bears a posterior accessory articular facet. A phylogenetic analysis recovered K. lafquenianum closely related with Morenosaurus stocki, Vegasaurus molyi, and Aristonectinae, showing the relationships between the elasmosaurids from Patagonia, Western Antarctic, and the Pacific coast of the USA. K. lafquenianum is part of the fauna of the coeval Allen and La Colonia formations that also comprises indeterminate aristonectines and polycotylids. This relatively high diversity plesiosaur fauna includes the three main morphotypes (aristonectines, non-aristonectine elasmosaurids and polycotylids), which is remarkable because the depositational environments of the Allen Formation have been inferred as marginal marine to non-marine environments.     La predicción del caudal máximo anual resulta de utilidad para la gestión de eventos extremos relacionados con crecidas. Para realizar estimaciones con bajo grado de incertidumbre es necesario contar con una gran cantidad de información hidrométrica. Las cuencas que integran el sistema hidrográfico del río Colorado presentan una topografía que dificulta el mantenimiento de las estaciones hidrométricas, razón por la cual, se carece de continuidad en los registros y se presentan en varios casos sectores sin aforar. La regionalización consiste en la transferencia de información de los sitios aforados a los no aforados para la predicción de caudales. El objeto del trabajo fue encontrar la función que relaciona el caudal máximo anual con las características climáticas y morfométricas de las cuencas. Para ello, se emplearon modelos de regresión simple. A partir de dicha relación y la curva de frecuencia regional es posible predecir caudales máximos anuales para diferentes períodos de retorno en cuencas sin aforo pertenecientes al sistema hidrográfico del río Colorado, Argentina. De los doce modelos analizados, los mejores resultados se presentan cuando la variable predictora es el área y perímetro de la cuenca. Los errores de los modelos de regionalización para diversos sitios del sistema resultaron entre el 6% y el 67%. Estos modelos constituyen una herramienta para la gestión de crecidas en el centro oeste argentino.

    Recientemente se propuso el concepto de degradación de la tierra neta nula como base para un futuro protocolo de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas de lucha contra la desertificación para reducir la degradación mundial de las tierras secas. Su objetivo es reducir la tasa de degradación de la tierra y aumentar la tasa de restauración de las tierras ya degradadas. Mientras que se reconoce el contexto socioeconómico que subyace a los procesos de degradación, hay un enfoque estrecho en la tierra y el suelo como el núcleo final que necesita ser protegido. The concept of Zero Net Land Degradation was recently proposed as the basis for a future protocol for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification to reduce global dryland degradation. It aims at reducing the rate of land degradation and increasing the rate of restoration of already degraded land. Whereas there is recognition of the socio-economic contexts that underlie degradation processes, there is a narrow focus on land and soil as the end core that needs to be protected. In particular, there is an essential human dimension to the sustainability of drylands that should be adequately tackled. In order to provide a wider perspective of the zero net degradation in drylands, I suggest considering the different livelihoods of rural households as a framework that encompasses the multidimensional perspective of desertification as a complex social–ecological problem.     Pollution and climate have an impact on pediatric respiratory diseases; few studies have assessed this in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.To assess the impact of the interaction between air pollutants and climate on the Emergency Department visits for acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRTI) in a children's hospital.Ecological, time-series study with generalized additive models that included total visits and visits for ALRTI to the Emergency Department between 2012 and 2016. A series with 7-day moving averages for ALRTI visits was founded as a bias control measure. Predictors were daily levels of air pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrous dioxide, particulate matter10 μ) and meteorological variables (temperature, humidity). Pollutants were measured at three monitoring stations. Temporal variables (day of the week, warm/cold semester) were controlled.There were 455 256 total visits; 17 298 accounted for visits for ALRTI. A correlation was established only between total visits and day of the week (Mondays and Saturdays, more visits; Thursdays, less visits). Less visits for ALRTI were recorded in the warm semester compared to the cold semester (relative risk = 0.23; 95 % confidence interval: 0.29-0.18; p0.001). One monitoring station did not show any correlation; the other two stations showed a weak correlation between carbon monoxide and particulate matter10 μ and visits for ALRTI.The season accurately accounts for the increased number of total visits and visits for ALRTI. Although there was a correlation between the level of certain pollutants and the number of visits, its impact was irrelevant.Introducción: La contaminación y el clima tienen impacto en la patología respiratoria en niños; pocos estudios lo evaluaron en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Objetivo: Evaluar el impacto de la interacción entre contaminantes atmosféricos y clima en las consultas por infección respiratoria aguda baja (IRAB) en un hospital pediátrico. Métodos: Estudio ecológico, de series temporales con modelos aditivos generalizados, que incluyó todas las consultas y consultas por IRAB (urgencias) entre 2012 y 2016. Para controlar sesgos, se conformó una serie con promedios móviles de 7 días para consultas por IRAB. Los predictores fueron niveles diarios de contaminantes atmosféricos (monóxido de carbono, dióxido nitroso, material particulado10 μ) y variables meteorológicas (temperatura, humedad). Los contaminantes fueron medidos en 3 estaciones de monitoreo. Se controló por variables temporales (día de la semana, semestre cálido/frío). Resultados: Las consultas totales fueron 455 256 y por IRAB 17 298. Solo consultas totales correlacionaron con día de la semana (lunes y sábados, más consultas y jueves, menos). El semestre cálido registró menos consultas por IRAB que el frío (riesgo relativo = 0,23; intervalo de confianza 95 %: 0,29-0,18; p0,001). Una estación de monitoreo no presentó ninguna correlación; las otras mostraron correlación débil entre monóxido de carbono y material particulado10 μ y consultas por IRAB. Conclusión: La época del año explica con precisión el incremento del número de consultas totales y por IRAB. Aunque el nivel de algunos contaminantes muestra correlación con el número de consultas, su impacto es irrelevante.
