s roles, and to reveal the carbon communities where sectors have intensive emission links. The research results suggest that the sectors with high out-degree, in-degree or betweenness can act as leverage points for carbon emissions mitigation. In addition to the electricity sector, which is included in the national ETS, the study also found that the metallurgy and construction sectors should be prioritized for emissions reduction from national and local levels. However, the hotpots are different across provinces and thus provincial specific targeted policies should be formed. Moreover, there are nineteen carbon communities in China with different features, which provides direction for provincial governments&rsquo output modelling and network analysis to track the embodied carbon emissions among thirty sectors of thirty provinces in China. Based on the large-data resolution network, a two-step network reduction algorithm is used to extract the backbone of the network. In addition, network centrality metrics and community detection algorithms are used to assess each individual sector&rsquo s commitment to peak its emissions by 2030, sectoral emissions are under the spotlight due to the rolling out of the national emission trading scheme (ETS). Squid behavior is synonymous with distinctive body patterns, postures, and movements that constitute a complex visual communication system. These communications are particularly obvious during reproduction. They are important for sexual selection and have been identified as a potential means of species differentiation. Here we present a detailed account of copulation, mating, and egg deposition behaviors from in situ observations of the squid Sepioteuthis australis from South Australia. We identified four mating types from 85 separate mating attempts: “Male-upturned mating” (64% of mating attempts); “Sneaker mating” (33%); “Male-parallel” (2%); and “Head-to-head” (1%). Intervals between successive egg deposition behaviors were clearly bimodal, with modes at 2.5 s and 70.0 s. Ninety-three percent of egg capsules contained 3 or 4 eggs (mean = 3.54), and each egg cluster contained between 218 and 1922 egg capsules (mean = 893.9). The reproductive behavior of S. australis from South Australia was different from that described for other cephalopod species. More importantly, comparison between these results and those for other populations of S. australis suggests that behavior may differ from one population to another.

Mazharul Haque;Lane-changing is one of the complex driving tasks that depends on the number of vehicles, objectives, and lanes. A driver often needs to respond to a lane-changing request of a lane-changer, which is a function of their personality traits and the current driving conditions. A connected environment is expected to assist during the lane-changing decision-making process by increasing situational awareness of surrounding traffic through vehicle-to-vehicle communication and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Although the majority of lane-changing decision-making components (e.g., gap acceptance behaviour, lane-changing execution behaviour, and drivers’ response to a heavy vehicle) in a traditional environment (an environment without driving aids) has been frequently investigated, our understanding of drivers’ interactions during the lane-changing decision-making process in a connected environment remains elusive due to the novelty of a connected environment and the scarcity of relevant data. As such, this study examines drivers’ responses to lane-changing requests in a connected environment using the CARRS-Q Advanced Driving Simulator. Seventy-eight participants responded to the lane-changing request of a lane-changer under two randomised driving conditions: baseline (traditional environment without driving aids) and connected environment (with driving aids). A segmentation-based approach is employed to extract drivers’ responses to the lane-changing request and subsequently estimate their response time from trajectory data. Additionally, drivers’ response times are modelled using a random parameter accelerated failure time (AFT) hazard-based duration model. Results reveal that drivers tend to be more cooperative in response to a lane-changing request in the connected environment compared with the baseline condition whereby they tend to accelerate to avoid the lane-changing request. The AFT model suggests that on average drivers’ response times are shorter in the connected environment, implying that drivers respond to the lane-changing request faster in the presence of driving aids. However, at the individual level, connected environment's impact on drivers’ response times is mixed as drivers’ response times may increase or decrease in the connected environment compared to the baseline condition, for instance, we find that female drivers have lower response times in the connected environment than that of male drivers. Overall, this study finds that drivers in connected environment, on average, take less time to respond and appear to be more cooperative, and thus, are less likely to be engaged in safety–critical events.

Boyd; Ulf Riebesell; Kunshan Gao;Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations are causing ocean acidification (OA), altering carbonate chemistry with consequences for marine organisms. Here we show that OA increases by 46–212% the production of phenolic compounds in phytoplankton grown under the elevated CO2 concentrations projected for the end of this century, compared with the ambient CO2 level. At the same time, mitochondrial respiration rate is enhanced under elevated CO2 concentrations by 130–160% in a single species or mixed phytoplankton assemblage. When fed with phytoplankton cells grown under OA, zooplankton assemblages have significantly higher phenolic compound content, by about 28–48%. The functional consequences of the increased accumulation of toxic phenolic compounds in primary and secondary producers have the potential to have profound consequences for marine ecosystem and seafood quality, with the possibility that fishery industries could be influenced as a result of progressive ocean changes. Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations causes ocean acidification, which alters marine chemical environments with unknown consequences for marine ecosystems. Here, Gao et al. show that ocean acidification increases levels of phenolic compounds in phytoplankton and zooplankton, implying a food chain impact.

Due to metals present in WFS and negative public perception, this material is commonly discarded to landfill as a waste material. WFS can however be potentially reused as a construction material in civil engineering infrastructure projects. In order to use WFS in a sustainable manner, the engineering properties of this material needs to be properly evaluated and assessed against local requirements. In this research, geotechnical and environmental tests were undertaken to evaluate the properties and viability of WFS for usage in civil engineering construction projects. In addition, control tests were undertaken on recycled glass (RG), a well-accepted waste material that has been successfully implemented in civil engineering applications, for benchmarking purposes. Geotechnical test results, including determination of maximum dry density (MDD) and optimum moisture content (OMC), California bearing ratio (CBR) and permeability, indicate that WFS can satisfactorily be used as fill material in embankments and in pipe-bedding applications. Comparisons of the environmental test results such as chemical composition and leachate analysis, with the requirements of local authorities indicated no particular hazards in the implementation of this material in applications such as road embankment fills and pipe-bedding. The carbon footprint savings through any potential reuse of WFS/RG was furthermore quantified.

Decarbonising the urban built environment for reaching carbon neutrality is high on the agenda for many cities undergoing rapid expansion and densification. As an important urban form, precincts have been increasingly focused on as the context for urban redevelopment planning and at the forefront for trialling carbon reduction measures. However, due to interplays between the built forms and the occupancy, the carbon performance of a precinct is significantly affected by morphological variations, demographical changes, and renewable energy system deployment. Despite much research on the development of low-carbon precincts, there is limited analysis on aggregated effects of population growth, building energy efficiency, renewable energy penetration, and carbon reduction targets in relation to precinct carbon signature and carbon neutral potential for precinct redevelopment and decarbonisation planning. In this paper, an integrated carbon assessment model, including overall precinct carbon emissions and carbon offset contributed by precinct-scale renewable energy harvesting, is developed and applied to examine the lifecycle carbon signature of urban precincts. Using a case study on a residential precinct redevelopment, scenario analysis is employed to explore opportunities for decarbonising densification development and the carbon neutral potential. Results from scenario analysis indicate that redevelopment of buildings with higher-rated energy efficiency and increase of renewable energy penetration can have a long term positive impact on the carbon performance of urban precincts. Meanwhile, demographical factors in precinct evolution also have a strong influence on a precinct&rsquo s carbon neutral potential. Whilst population size exerts upward pressure on total carbon emissions, changes in family types and associated consumption behaviour, such as travelling, can make positive contributions to carbon reduction. The current COVID-19 pandemic has changed education systems in most countries: some have shut down whilst others, especially in the higher education sector, have introduced electronic/distance learning systems, such as Blackboard platforms. The current study aimed to identify and test the factors that influence accounting students’ and faculty members’ Blackboard platform use during the pandemic. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model was extended and modified by adding four new variables: perceived risk, mobility, self-efficacy and self-managed learning. This was done to generate an understanding of people’s usage traits. This is the main contribution of the article: the extension of UTAUT in this context and the consideration of online learning in a pandemic environment situation. Pandemics oppose sustainability from numerous contexts. Measures which counteract sustainability risks associated with pandemics, such as use of technology, are critical risk management instruments and are, thus, important for consideration. Through an online survey, the data was gathered from accounting students and faculty staff in an accounting department at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyse the data and examine the hypotheses. This study confirmed the hypotheses concerning the influence of the Blackboard platform on mobility, self-efficacy and self-managed learning. This article contributes to the existing UTAUT model by extending our understanding of the influence of factors to use Blackboard platforms. Moreover, the results have practical implications for policymakers, practitioners, online learning product providers and teaching staff looking to develop efficient strategies concerning learning-related information technologies.

Economists have been promoting its virtues for as long as arguments about economic efficiency have been in print. What is different today is that a growing number (but by no means all) of decision makers are showing a greater interest and commitment to finding ways to improve the efficiency of the road system, be it through infrastructure expansion and/or other means. Of special interest are the growing level of traffic congestion, and a feeling of almost helplessness, that we seem to have failed in finding a way forward to maintain traffic congestion at levels that are acceptable to the public, and are consistent with principles of good economic practice. The literature abounds with suggestions on how this might be achieved, focused primarily on various pricing regimes that say as much as about levels of charges as they do about the role of the revenue raised, the latter as controversial as the former. The current state of technology provides a capability to introduce sophisticated charging mechanisms. We are at a stage in the evolution of ‘solutions’ to dealing with inefficient road use and provision of road funds that offers real prospects of delivering outcomes that can align with political, social and user demands and expectations. This paper provides a global perspective on the road to efficiency, using the UK contributions in the special issue as a backdrop of what can be done. The issues and challenges are sufficiently global to enable the contributions to be of immediate relevance beyond the UK.

Mazharul Haque; Zili Li;In the safety literature, motor vehicle crashes are modelled predominately using single equation regression models, albeit with a variety of distributional assumptions and econometric enhancements. These models rely on a single linear additive predictive equation—which becomes multiplicative with a log transform—to specify the expected mean crash count conditioned on predictors. The models also specify the distribution of observations around the conditional mean, with common examples including the Poisson, Negative Binomial, and Conway-Maxwell distribution among others. This mainstream probabilistic conceptualization (i.e. model) of motor vehicle crash causation assumes that crashes are well-approximated by a single source of risk, wherein several contributing factors exert their collective, non-independent influences on the occurrence of crashes via a linear predictor. This study first postulates, and then demonstrates empirically, that crash occurrence may be more complex than can be adequately captured by a single equation regression model. The total crash count recorded at a transport network location (e.g. road segment) may arise from multiple simultaneous and inter-dependent sources of risk, rather than one. Each of these sources may uniquely contribute to the total observed crash count. For instance, a site’s crash occurrence may be dominated by contributions from driver behaviour issues (e.g. speeding, impaired driving), while another site’s crashes might arise predominately from design and operational deficiencies such as deteriorating pavements and worn lane markings. Stated succinctly, this research hypothesises that the unobserved heterogeneity in the accumulation of motor vehicle crashes at transport network locations arises because multiple sources of risk, not one, better captures complexity in the crash occurrence process. A stochastic multiple risk source methodological approach is developed to correspond with and empirically test this hypothesis. A joint econometric model with random parameters and instrumental variables demonstrates the applicability of the proposed theory and the corresponding methodological approach. The proposed model assumes that complexity of crash occurrence is well approximated using three sources of risk comprised of engineering, unobserved spatial, and driver behavioural factors. It is empirically tested using crash data from state controlled roads in Queensland, Australia. Finally, the multiple risk source model is compared to the traditional single risk source model to assess the viability of the proposed approach based on the sample data. The multiple risk source model significantly outperformed the single risk source model in terms of prediction ability and goodness of fit measures. In addition, while the single risk source model predicts total crash counts for individual sites, the multiple risk source model predicts crash count proportions contributed by each source of risk, and predicts crashes by risk source. The improvement in fit combined with the theoretical appeal of a multiple risk source model to explain unobserved heterogeneity in crashes suggests—at least for the sample used in the study—that the complexity in crash occurrence is better explained using multiple equation linear predictors. Further research should examine other datasets for repeatability and should further explore and test risk sources.

The research results suggest that the sectors with high out-degree, in-degree or betweenness can act as leverage points for carbon emissions mitigation. In addition to the electricity sector, which is included in the national ETS, the study also found that the metallurgy and construction sectors should be prioritized for emissions reduction from national and local levels. However, the hotpots are different across provinces and thus provincial specific targeted policies should be formed. Moreover, there are nineteen carbon communities in China with different features, which provides direction for provincial governments&rsquo output modelling and network analysis to track the embodied carbon emissions among thirty sectors of thirty provinces in China. Based on the large-data resolution network, a two-step network reduction algorithm is used to extract the backbone of the network. In addition, network centrality metrics and community detection algorithms are used to assess each individual sector&rsquo s commitment to peak its emissions by 2030, sectoral emissions are under the spotlight due to the rolling out of the national emission trading scheme (ETS). However, the current sector policies focus either on the production side or consumption while the majority of sectors along the transmission were overlooked. Squid behavior is synonymous with distinctive body patterns, postures, and movements that constitute a complex visual communication system. These communications are particularly obvious during reproduction. They are important for sexual selection and have been identified as a potential means of species differentiation. Here we present a detailed account of copulation, mating, and egg deposition behaviors from in situ observations of the squid Sepioteuthis australis from South Australia. We identified four mating types from 85 separate mating attempts: “Male-upturned mating” (64% of mating attempts); “Sneaker mating” (33%); “Male-parallel” (2%); and “Head-to-head” (1%). Intervals between successive egg deposition behaviors were clearly bimodal, with modes at 2.5 s and 70.0 s. Ninety-three percent of egg capsules contained 3 or 4 eggs (mean = 3.54), and each egg cluster contained between 218 and 1922 egg capsules (mean = 893.9). The reproductive behavior of S. australis from South Australia was different from that described for other cephalopod species. More importantly, comparison between these results and those for other populations of S. australis suggests that behavior may differ from one population to another.

Mazharul Haque;Lane-changing is one of the complex driving tasks that depends on the number of vehicles, objectives, and lanes. A driver often needs to respond to a lane-changing request of a lane-changer, which is a function of their personality traits and the current driving conditions. A connected environment is expected to assist during the lane-changing decision-making process by increasing situational awareness of surrounding traffic through vehicle-to-vehicle communication and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Although the majority of lane-changing decision-making components (e.g., gap acceptance behaviour, lane-changing execution behaviour, and drivers’ response to a heavy vehicle) in a traditional environment (an environment without driving aids) has been frequently investigated, our understanding of drivers’ interactions during the lane-changing decision-making process in a connected environment remains elusive due to the novelty of a connected environment and the scarcity of relevant data. As such, this study examines drivers’ responses to lane-changing requests in a connected environment using the CARRS-Q Advanced Driving Simulator. Seventy-eight participants responded to the lane-changing request of a lane-changer under two randomised driving conditions: baseline (traditional environment without driving aids) and connected environment (with driving aids). A segmentation-based approach is employed to extract drivers’ responses to the lane-changing request and subsequently estimate their response time from trajectory data. Additionally, drivers’ response times are modelled using a random parameter accelerated failure time (AFT) hazard-based duration model. Results reveal that drivers tend to be more cooperative in response to a lane-changing request in the connected environment compared with the baseline condition whereby they tend to accelerate to avoid the lane-changing request. The AFT model suggests that on average drivers’ response times are shorter in the connected environment, implying that drivers respond to the lane-changing request faster in the presence of driving aids. However, at the individual level, connected environment's impact on drivers’ response times is mixed as drivers’ response times may increase or decrease in the connected environment compared to the baseline condition, for instance, we find that female drivers have lower response times in the connected environment than that of male drivers. Overall, this study finds that drivers in connected environment, on average, take less time to respond and appear to be more cooperative, and thus, are less likely to be engaged in safety–critical events.

Boyd; Ulf Riebesell; Kunshan Gao;Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations are causing ocean acidification (OA), altering carbonate chemistry with consequences for marine organisms. Here we show that OA increases by 46–212% the production of phenolic compounds in phytoplankton grown under the elevated CO2 concentrations projected for the end of this century, compared with the ambient CO2 level. At the same time, mitochondrial respiration rate is enhanced under elevated CO2 concentrations by 130–160% in a single species or mixed phytoplankton assemblage. When fed with phytoplankton cells grown under OA, zooplankton assemblages have significantly higher phenolic compound content, by about 28–48%. The functional consequences of the increased accumulation of toxic phenolic compounds in primary and secondary producers have the potential to have profound consequences for marine ecosystem and seafood quality, with the possibility that fishery industries could be influenced as a result of progressive ocean changes. Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations causes ocean acidification, which alters marine chemical environments with unknown consequences for marine ecosystems. Here, Gao et al. show that ocean acidification increases levels of phenolic compounds in phytoplankton and zooplankton, implying a food chain impact.

Due to metals present in WFS and negative public perception, this material is commonly discarded to landfill as a waste material. WFS can however be potentially reused as a construction material in civil engineering infrastructure projects. In order to use WFS in a sustainable manner, the engineering properties of this material needs to be properly evaluated and assessed against local requirements. In this research, geotechnical and environmental tests were undertaken to evaluate the properties and viability of WFS for usage in civil engineering construction projects. In addition, control tests were undertaken on recycled glass (RG), a well-accepted waste material that has been successfully implemented in civil engineering applications, for benchmarking purposes. Geotechnical test results, including determination of maximum dry density (MDD) and optimum moisture content (OMC), California bearing ratio (CBR) and permeability, indicate that WFS can satisfactorily be used as fill material in embankments and in pipe-bedding applications. Comparisons of the environmental test results such as chemical composition and leachate analysis, with the requirements of local authorities indicated no particular hazards in the implementation of this material in applications such as road embankment fills and pipe-bedding. The carbon footprint savings through any potential reuse of WFS/RG was furthermore quantified.

Decarbonising the urban built environment for reaching carbon neutrality is high on the agenda for many cities undergoing rapid expansion and densification. As an important urban form, precincts have been increasingly focused on as the context for urban redevelopment planning and at the forefront for trialling carbon reduction measures. However, due to interplays between the built forms and the occupancy, the carbon performance of a precinct is significantly affected by morphological variations, demographical changes, and renewable energy system deployment. Despite much research on the development of low-carbon precincts, there is limited analysis on aggregated effects of population growth, building energy efficiency, renewable energy penetration, and carbon reduction targets in relation to precinct carbon signature and carbon neutral potential for precinct redevelopment and decarbonisation planning. In this paper, an integrated carbon assessment model, including overall precinct carbon emissions and carbon offset contributed by precinct-scale renewable energy harvesting, is developed and applied to examine the lifecycle carbon signature of urban precincts. Using a case study on a residential precinct redevelopment, scenario analysis is employed to explore opportunities for decarbonising densification development and the carbon neutral potential. Results from scenario analysis indicate that redevelopment of buildings with higher-rated energy efficiency and increase of renewable energy penetration can have a long term positive impact on the carbon performance of urban precincts. Meanwhile, demographical factors in precinct evolution also have a strong influence on a precinct&rsquo s carbon neutral potential. Whilst population size exerts upward pressure on total carbon emissions, changes in family types and associated consumption behaviour, such as travelling, can make positive contributions to carbon reduction. The analysis also highlights the significance of embodied carbon to the total carbon signature and the carbon reduction potential of a precinct during densification, reinforcing the notion that &ldquo is as important as carbon offsetting measures for decarbonising the precinct toward carbon neutrality. develop with less&rdquo

The current COVID-19 pandemic has changed education systems in most countries: some have shut down whilst others, especially in the higher education sector, have introduced electronic/distance learning systems, such as Blackboard platforms. The current study aimed to identify and test the factors that influence accounting students’ and faculty members’ Blackboard platform use during the pandemic. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model was extended and modified by adding four new variables: perceived risk, mobility, self-efficacy and self-managed learning. This was done to generate an understanding of people’s usage traits. This is the main contribution of the article: the extension of UTAUT in this context and the consideration of online learning in a pandemic environment situation. Pandemics oppose sustainability from numerous contexts. Measures which counteract sustainability risks associated with pandemics, such as use of technology, are critical risk management instruments and are, thus, important for consideration. Through an online survey, the data was gathered from accounting students and faculty staff in an accounting department at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyse the data and examine the hypotheses. This study confirmed the hypotheses concerning the influence of the Blackboard platform on mobility, self-efficacy and self-managed learning. This article contributes to the existing UTAUT model by extending our understanding of the influence of factors to use Blackboard platforms. Moreover, the results have practical implications for policymakers, practitioners, online learning product providers and teaching staff looking to develop efficient strategies concerning learning-related information technologies.

Economists have been promoting its virtues for as long as arguments about economic efficiency have been in print. What is different today is that a growing number (but by no means all) of decision makers are showing a greater interest and commitment to finding ways to improve the efficiency of the road system, be it through infrastructure expansion and/or other means. Of special interest are the growing level of traffic congestion, and a feeling of almost helplessness, that we seem to have failed in finding a way forward to maintain traffic congestion at levels that are acceptable to the public, and are consistent with principles of good economic practice. The literature abounds with suggestions on how this might be achieved, focused primarily on various pricing regimes that say as much as about levels of charges as they do about the role of the revenue raised, the latter as controversial as the former. The current state of technology provides a capability to introduce sophisticated charging mechanisms. We are at a stage in the evolution of ‘solutions’ to dealing with inefficient road use and provision of road funds that offers real prospects of delivering outcomes that can align with political, social and user demands and expectations. This paper provides a global perspective on the road to efficiency, using the UK contributions in the special issue as a backdrop of what can be done. The issues and challenges are sufficiently global to enable the contributions to be of immediate relevance beyond the UK.

Mazharul Haque; Zili Li;In the safety literature, motor vehicle crashes are modelled predominately using single equation regression models, albeit with a variety of distributional assumptions and econometric enhancements. These models rely on a single linear additive predictive equation—which becomes multiplicative with a log transform—to specify the expected mean crash count conditioned on predictors. The models also specify the distribution of observations around the conditional mean, with common examples including the Poisson, Negative Binomial, and Conway-Maxwell distribution among others. This mainstream probabilistic conceptualization (i.e. model) of motor vehicle crash causation assumes that crashes are well-approximated by a single source of risk, wherein several contributing factors exert their collective, non-independent influences on the occurrence of crashes via a linear predictor. This study first postulates, and then demonstrates empirically, that crash occurrence may be more complex than can be adequately captured by a single equation regression model. The total crash count recorded at a transport network location (e.g. road segment) may arise from multiple simultaneous and inter-dependent sources of risk, rather than one. Each of these sources may uniquely contribute to the total observed crash count. For instance, a site’s crash occurrence may be dominated by contributions from driver behaviour issues (e.g. speeding, impaired driving), while another site’s crashes might arise predominately from design and operational deficiencies such as deteriorating pavements and worn lane markings. Stated succinctly, this research hypothesises that the unobserved heterogeneity in the accumulation of motor vehicle crashes at transport network locations arises because multiple sources of risk, not one, better captures complexity in the crash occurrence process. A stochastic multiple risk source methodological approach is developed to correspond with and empirically test this hypothesis. A joint econometric model with random parameters and instrumental variables demonstrates the applicability of the proposed theory and the corresponding methodological approach. The proposed model assumes that complexity of crash occurrence is well approximated using three sources of risk comprised of engineering, unobserved spatial, and driver behavioural factors. It is empirically tested using crash data from state controlled roads in Queensland, Australia. Finally, the multiple risk source model is compared to the traditional single risk source model to assess the viability of the proposed approach based on the sample data. The multiple risk source model significantly outperformed the single risk source model in terms of prediction ability and goodness of fit measures. In addition, while the single risk source model predicts total crash counts for individual sites, the multiple risk source model predicts crash count proportions contributed by each source of risk, and predicts crashes by risk source. The improvement in fit combined with the theoretical appeal of a multiple risk source model to explain unobserved heterogeneity in crashes suggests—at least for the sample used in the study—that the complexity in crash occurrence is better explained using multiple equation linear predictors. Further research should examine other datasets for repeatability and should further explore and test risk sources.
