Abstract This paper investigates the certification of insanity through a standardized template called Form K which was used in Ontario between 1873 and 1883. My main thesis is that the introduction of the Form K had profound and long-lasting effects on the determination of insanity. In particular, it created a unique case in the history of certification, it grounded civil confinement on a strategy of consensus, and it informed mental health documentation for more than a century. As the result of a transnational mediation from Victorian England, the Form K prescribed an examination setting which involved a high number of participants, including three physicians and several witnesses. By comparing this case with other jurisdictions of the time, this paper shows how Ontario became a distinctive case worldwide. In order to get a closer look at this medico-legal procedure, I consider the archival records of the Toronto asylum and conclude that the certification of insanity relied on a strategy of consensus. While the Form K proved quite successful in preventing legal actions, it produced financial, logistic, and bureaucratic issues. The Form K was thus discontinued after a decade, yet its structure influenced Ontario’s mental health documentation throughout the twentieth century. This paper shows the relevance of the certification of insanity for transnational history and for understanding contemporary issues of involuntary confinement and stigma in mental health.

Research Framework : Over the thirty years before World War I, expansion of the world economy occasioned new opportunities and new constraints for children and adolescents as well as adults; but experiences and responses of minors are understated in print sources. Objectives : To discover what societal changes young people noticed and talked about, we examined the « children's page » of a weekly newspaper available for a rural setting in the South Island of New Zealand. The perspective of youth is essential to interpret trajectories inferred from the more conventional sources available in a North American urban setting (Montreal, Quebec). Methodology : From the internet archive PapersPast we collected 12,000 letters of young people aged six through nineteen years, 1886-1909, and extracted their comments on two popular topics : the work they reported (paid or unpaid) and their accounts of toothache. Results : The letters inform us about tasks of young people by age, gender, season, daily routine and household structure. Changes in work assignments at ages 12 to 14, coincident with a spurt of growth and, for most, the end of formal schooling, evoked discussion among them about gender roles and, among girls, protest of the scheduling of their growing up.Conclusion : The seasonality of tasks assigned to children still in school indicates an unrecognized contribution to the elasticity of the rural economy on a global frontier of the industrial food supply. Reallocation of the labour of young people was an ongoing process, subject to negotiation.Contribution : The wealth of information and opinion accessed in the letters invites further experiment with newspaper content analysis for recognizing the participation of segments of the population whose contributions to economic growth have been underestimated.

K.; Plescia, S.; Lackey, J. C.; Normandin, N.; van Reenen, D.;Recent computer simulation studies at the Institute for Research in Construction (IRC) of the National Research Council (NRC) Canada have indicated that the combined wetting and drying potential of the wood-frame face sealed stucco clad wall is significantly influenced by the water vapour permeability and liquid diffusivity of the stucco material. Lower liquid diffusivity and higher water vapour permeability of the stucco material can positively influence the overall moisture management capacity of the wood-frame face sealed stucco clad wall. This paper presents preliminary experimental results from a pilot research project that aims to use the lessons learned from the simulation studies for the development of new materials or modify existing materials. The results from the experimental study show that it is possible to reduce the water absorption coefficient (a measure of liquid diffusivity) of the stucco material without reducing water vapour permeability through appropriate mix design. 11th Canadian Building Science and Technology Conference: 22 March 2007, Banff, Canada

The method allows anomaly free inputs (i.e., those before contamination) to originate from a wide class of random sequences, thus opening up possibilities for diverse applications. To illustrate how the method works on data, and how to interpret its results and make decisions, we analyze several actual time series, which are originally nonstationary but in the process of analysis are converted into stationary. As a further illustration, we provide a controlled experiment with anomaly free inputs following an ARMA time series model under various contamination scenarios.

This paper presents the development and field validation of an iterative learning-based admittance control algorithm for autonomous excavation in fragmented rock using robotic wheel loaders. An admittance control strategy is augmented with iterative learning, which automatically updates control parameters based on the error between a target bucket fill weight and the measured fill weight at the end of each excavation pass. The algorithm was validated through full-scale autonomous excavation experiments with a 14-tonne capacity load-haul-dump (LHD) machine and two different types of excavation materials: fragmented rock and gravel. In both excavation scenarios, the iterative learning algorithm is able to update the admittance control parameters for a specified target bucket fill weight, eliminating the need to manually re-tune control parameters as material characteristics change. These results have practical significance for increasing the autonomy of robotic wheel loaders used in mining and construction.
