The econometric specification accounts for the censored nature of the data, which arises from no participation and infrequency of purchases, and the existence of unobserved heterogeneity, which arises from the non observability of health stata. Our evidence suggests that ignoring these features can have a significant impact on the size, sign and significance of the model estimates. The estimates for the participation and consumption processes also suggest that the deduction of expenditures on health care currently applicable in the Spanish tax system are positively associated to income and fertility. Financial support from Merck through the Centre de Recerca d’Economia i Salut is thankfully acknowledged.

To make this tool functional and widely used, it is currently developed as a plug-in for the well-known and representative REVIT BIM software package. The procedure is particularly applied to the Castle of Torrelobatón (Valladolid, Spain) to allow the automation in cataloguing of required elements, as illustrative example of the defensive architecture from the Middle age to the Renaissance in Europe, reason why it is one of the pilot sites of the INCEPTION project. Thus the HBIM process is enhanced, which is continuing right through to provide better services to technicians, scholars and citizens. This study entails a comparative intercropping assay using cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and melon (Cucumis melo) under organic management with different patterns and 30% less organic fertilization than that used in monocrops in the first year. The intercropping system changed the bacterial community structure independently of the intercropping pattern and contributed to an increase in soil nitrogen, phosphorous content and melon crop yield. The intercropped systems were characterized by a higher abundance of Pseudomonas (Proteobacteria), which are related to nutrient cycling, and other beneficial microorganisms.

Some B. cereus strains can grow in chilled food and consequently cause food poisoning. We have identified a new sensor/regulator mechanism involved in low-temperature B. cereus growth. Construction of a mutant of this two-component system enabled us to show that this system, called CasKR, is required for growth at the minimal temperature ( T min ). CasKR was also involved in optimal cold growth above T min and in cell survival below T min . Microscopic observation showed that CasKR plays a key role in cell shape during cold growth. Introducing the casKR genes in a Δ casKR mutant restored its ability to grow at T min . Although it was first identified in the ATCC 14579 model strain, this mechanism has been conserved in most strains of the B. cereus group. We show that the role of CasKR in cold growth is similar in other B. cereus sensu lato strains with different growth temperature ranges, including psychrotolerant strains.

We investigate the risk–return trade-off on the US and European stock markets. We investigate the non-linear risk–return trade-off with a special eye to the tails of the stock returns using quantile regressions. We first consider the US stock market portfolio. We find that the risk–return trade-off is significantly positive at the upper tail (0.9 quantile), where the upper tail is large positive excess returns. The positive trade-off is as expected from asset pricing models. For the lower tail (0.1 quantile), that is for large negative stock returns, the trade-off is significantly negative. Additionally, for the median (0.5 quantile), the risk–return trade-off is insignificant. These results are recovered for the US industry portfolios and for Eurozone stock market portfolios.

Solano; Jaime Perez; Antonio Viedma;Non-Newtonian flow and heat transfer in tubes of heat exchangers with reciprocating insert devices have been numerically investigated. The heat exchanger is mechanically assisted by a reciprocating cylinder, which moves the scraping rods inserted in the tubes. An array of semi-circular elements is mounted on each rod, with a pitch p = 5D. These elements fit the internal diameter of the tubes. During the reciprocating motion, they scrape the inner tube wall, avoiding fouling. Additionally, the movement of the inserted device generates macroscopic displacements of the flow, which continuously mix core regions with peripheral flow. A power law model with temperature dependent properties is implemented in FLUENT, for a Carboxymethil cellulose (CMC) solution in water with concentration of 2%. Flow pattern and pressure drop mechanisms are analyzed in static and dynamic conditions, and heat transfer enhancement features are discussed.

[EN] The use of hand-held mechanical devices to thin blooms of peach trees trained into the " free Italian vase" form was studied. Three devices were tested, and no differences were found among them in terms of thinning time and number of fruits per cm 2 of trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) at harvesting. Thinning, by hand or mechanically, reduced the yield per tree by 26-33% with respect to not thinning; however, thinning increased the fruit size. In both years, the yields of fruit >67mm in the thinned trees ranged from 40.4 to 53.4kgtree -1, respectively, whereas in the un-thinned trees, it was 25.1 and 18.2kgtree -1 in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Hand thinning took 385hha -1, and mechanical thinning reduced this time by 89%. The cost of hand thinning was 4.8z€tree -1, whereas the cost of mechanical thinning ranged from 0.4 to 1.1z€tree -1. The economic study showed that the total yield value was similar with hand and mechanical thinning, but the cost of mechanical thinning was only 10-18% that of hand thinning. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Solano; Jaime Perez; Antonio Viedma;D.S. Martínez; J.P.
