Phytoremediation presents an opportunity to transfer HMs from environmental matrices into plants, making it easy to translocate from one place to another. The ornate features of HMs’ phytoremediation are biophilia and carbon neutrality, compared to the physical and chemical remediation methods. Some recent studies related to LCA also support that phytoremediation is technically more sustainable than competing technologies. However, one major post-application challenge associated with HMs phytoremediation is properly managing HMs contaminated biomass generated. Such a yield presents the problem of reintroducing HMs into the environment due to natural decomposition and release of plant sap from the harvested biomass. The transportation of high yields can also make phytoremediation economically inviable. This review presents the design of a sustainable phytoremediation strategy using an everevolving life cycle assessment tool. This review also discusses possible post-phytoremediation biomass management strategies for the HMs contaminated biomass management. These strategies include composting, leachate compaction, gasification, pyrolysis, torrefaction, and metal recovery. Further, the commercial outlook for properly utilizing HMs contaminated biomass was presented. Authors apologize to all authors whose research has supported this area of interest, and their relevant findings were left out during the preparation of this review. Panagou;Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and multispectral imaging (MSI) were evaluated for the prediction of the microbiological quality of poultry meat via regression and classification models. Chicken thigh fillets (n = 402) were subjected to spoilage experiments at eight isothermal and two dynamic temperature profiles. Samples were analyzed microbiologically (total viable counts (TVCs) and Pseudomonas spp.), while simultaneously MSI and FT-IR spectra were acquired. The organoleptic quality of the samples was also evaluated by a sensory panel, establishing a TVC spoilage threshold at 6.99 log CFU/cm2. Partial least squares regression (PLS-R) models were employed in the assessment of TVCs and Pseudomonas spp. counts on chicken’s surface. Furthermore, classification models (linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), support vector machines (SVMs), and quadratic support vector machines (QSVMs)) were developed to discriminate the samples in two quality classes (fresh vs. spoiled). PLS-R models developed on MSI data predicted TVCs and Pseudomonas spp. counts satisfactorily, with root mean squared error (RMSE) values of 0.987 and 1.215 log CFU/cm2, respectively. SVM model coupled to MSI data exhibited the highest performance with an overall accuracy of 94.4%, while in the case of FT-IR, improved classification was obtained with the QDA model (overall accuracy 71.4%). These results confirm the efficacy of MSI and FT-IR as rapid methods to assess the quality in poultry products.

Intangibility of services and service-orientation fosters creation of flexible solutions by innovating business models, service processes and service products. Capabilities are perceived as measuring indicator of service orientation in enterprises and one requirement for business model innovation. This paper investigates how design of capabilities can help enterprises to offer novel services. To do so, we analyze the degree of innovation before and after applying the capability-driven development (CDD), which is a methodological and technological enterprise modelling approach. Based on observations from two industrial cases affected from the main forces that disturb the business terrain, the paper concludes that CDD helps enterprises to innovate their digital services by causing changes mainly on business model and service process levels.

The schemes are based on suitable symplectic procedures applied to the dynamical system written in terms of the log transformation of the original variables. Even if this approach is not new when dealing with Hamiltonian systems, it is of particular interest in population dynamics since the positivity of the approximation is ensured without any restriction on the temporal step size. When applied to separable M-systems, the resulting schemes are proved to be explicit, positive, Poisson maps. The approach is generalized to predator-prey dynamics which do not exhibit an M-system structure and successively to reaction-diffusion equations describing spatially extended dynamics. A classical polynomial Krylov approximation for the diffusive term joint with the proposed schemes for the reaction, allows us to propose numerical schemes which are explicit when applied to well established ecological models for predator-prey dynamics. Numerical simulations show that the considered approach provides results which outperform the numerical approximations found in recent literature.

Quantitative data were collected about the number of samples taken, their representativeness, and the virology results obtained, comparing them with the rest of the sentinel system over the same weeks.ResultsA total of 312 POCTs were performed; 276 were used for quantitative analysis, of which 60 were positive for influenza and 216 were negative. The average swabbing rate was 0.4 per 1000 population and swab positivity was between 16.7% (n = 14/84) and 41.4% (n = 12/29). Given a positive influenza POCT result, the odds ratio of receiving an antiviral was 14.1 (95% confidence intervals [CI] = 2.9 to 70.0, P<0.001) and of receiving an antibiotic was 0.4 (95% CI = 0.2 to 0.8, P = 0.01), compared with patients with a negative result. Qualitative analysis showed that it was feasible for practices to implement POCT, but there is considerable variation in the processes used.ConclusionTesting for influenza using POCT is feasible in primary care and may improve antimicrobial use. However, further evidence from randomised trials of influenza POCT in general practice is needed.

AbstractStatistical profiling algorithms claiming to predict which jobseekers are at risk of becoming long‐term unemployed are spread unevenly across countries. However, the pathways and histories of these tools are understudied. Because the profiling path in France is a winding one, it is fruitful to study the production of profiling acceptability within the Public Employment Service (PES), and upstream of its reception by frontline advisers. Using a mix of interviews and written sources, we show that the production of profiling acceptability sits at the crossroads of two processes: technical and political transformations of the instrument itself and broader institutional and managerial transformations of the PES. On the basis of this case study, the paper enriches our understanding of the slow and incremental rationalization of public services that we have termed “professional rationalization.” We argue that, far from being a softened or moderated form of bureaucratic rationalization, it is powerful—perhaps even irreversible—precisely because it transforms its target (frontline advisers) before the rationalization instrument is even deployed.

Unfortunately, current treatment options demonstrate limited benefits. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of ACY-1215, a histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi), to attenuate growth of primary ocular UM cell lines and, in particular, a liver MUM cell line in vitro and in vivo, and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. A significant (p = 0.0001) dose-dependent reduction in surviving clones of the primary ocular UM cells, Mel270, was observed upon treatment with increasing doses of ACY-1215. Treatment of OMM2.5 MUM cells with ACY-1215 resulted in a significant (p = 0.0001), dose-dependent reduction in cell survival and proliferation in vitro, and in vivo attenuation of primary OMM2.5 xenografts in zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, flow cytometry revealed that ACY-1215 significantly arrested the OMM2.5 cell cycle in S phase (p = 0.0001) following 24 h of treatment, and significant apoptosis was triggered in a time-and dose-dependent manner (p < 0.0001). Additionally, ACY-1215 treatment resulted in a significant reduction in OMM2.5 p-ERK expression levels. Through proteome profiling, the attenuation of the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) signaling pathway was linked to the observed anti-cancer effects of ACY-1215. In agreement, pharmacological inhibition of MITF signaling with ML329 significantly reduced OMM2.5 cell survival and viability in vitro (p = 0.0001) and reduced OMM2.5 cells in vivo (p = 0.0006). Our findings provide evidence that ACY-1215 and ML329 are efficacious against growth and survival of OMM2.5 MUM cells. High-throughput sequencing of microbial assemblages has been proposed as an alternative methodology to the traditional ones used in marine monitoring and environmental assessment. Here, we evaluated pico- and nanoplankton diversity as ecological indicators in NW Mediterranean coastal waters by comparing their diversity in samples subjected to varying degrees of continental pressures. Using metabarcoding of the 16S and 18S rRNA genes, we explored whether alphadiversity indices, abundance of Operational Taxonomic Units and taxonomic groups (and their ratios) provide information on the ecological quality of coastal waters. Our results revealed that only eukaryotic diversity metrics and a limited number of prokaryotic and eukaryotic taxa displayed potential in assessing continental influences in our surveyed area, resulting thus in a restrained potential of microbial plankton diversity as an ecological indicator. Phytoremediation presents an opportunity to transfer HMs from environmental matrices into plants, making it easy to translocate from one place to another. The ornate features of HMs’ phytoremediation are biophilia and carbon neutrality, compared to the physical and chemical remediation methods. Some recent studies related to LCA also support that phytoremediation is technically more sustainable than competing technologies. However, one major post-application challenge associated with HMs phytoremediation is properly managing HMs contaminated biomass generated. Such a yield presents the problem of reintroducing HMs into the environment due to natural decomposition and release of plant sap from the harvested biomass. The transportation of high yields can also make phytoremediation economically inviable. This review presents the design of a sustainable phytoremediation strategy using an everevolving life cycle assessment tool. This review also discusses possible post-phytoremediation biomass management strategies for the HMs contaminated biomass management. These strategies include composting, leachate compaction, gasification, pyrolysis, torrefaction, and metal recovery. Further, the commercial outlook for properly utilizing HMs contaminated biomass was presented. Authors apologize to all authors whose research has supported this area of interest, and their relevant findings were left out during the preparation of this review. Panagou;Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and multispectral imaging (MSI) were evaluated for the prediction of the microbiological quality of poultry meat via regression and classification models. Chicken thigh fillets (n = 402) were subjected to spoilage experiments at eight isothermal and two dynamic temperature profiles. Samples were analyzed microbiologically (total viable counts (TVCs) and Pseudomonas spp.), while simultaneously MSI and FT-IR spectra were acquired. The organoleptic quality of the samples was also evaluated by a sensory panel, establishing a TVC spoilage threshold at 6.99 log CFU/cm2. Partial least squares regression (PLS-R) models were employed in the assessment of TVCs and Pseudomonas spp. counts on chicken’s surface. Furthermore, classification models (linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), support vector machines (SVMs), and quadratic support vector machines (QSVMs)) were developed to discriminate the samples in two quality classes (fresh vs. spoiled). PLS-R models developed on MSI data predicted TVCs and Pseudomonas spp. counts satisfactorily, with root mean squared error (RMSE) values of 0.987 and 1.215 log CFU/cm2, respectively. SVM model coupled to MSI data exhibited the highest performance with an overall accuracy of 94.4%, while in the case of FT-IR, improved classification was obtained with the QDA model (overall accuracy 71.4%). These results confirm the efficacy of MSI and FT-IR as rapid methods to assess the quality in poultry products.

Intangibility of services and service-orientation fosters creation of flexible solutions by innovating business models, service processes and service products. Capabilities are perceived as measuring indicator of service orientation in enterprises and one requirement for business model innovation. This paper investigates how design of capabilities can help enterprises to offer novel services. To do so, we analyze the degree of innovation before and after applying the capability-driven development (CDD), which is a methodological and technological enterprise modelling approach. Based on observations from two industrial cases affected from the main forces that disturb the business terrain, the paper concludes that CDD helps enterprises to innovate their digital services by causing changes mainly on business model and service process levels.

The schemes are based on suitable symplectic procedures applied to the dynamical system written in terms of the log transformation of the original variables. Even if this approach is not new when dealing with Hamiltonian systems, it is of particular interest in population dynamics since the positivity of the approximation is ensured without any restriction on the temporal step size. When applied to separable M-systems, the resulting schemes are proved to be explicit, positive, Poisson maps. The approach is generalized to predator-prey dynamics which do not exhibit an M-system structure and successively to reaction-diffusion equations describing spatially extended dynamics. A classical polynomial Krylov approximation for the diffusive term joint with the proposed schemes for the reaction, allows us to propose numerical schemes which are explicit when applied to well established ecological models for predator-prey dynamics. Numerical simulations show that the considered approach provides results which outperform the numerical approximations found in recent literature.

Quantitative data were collected about the number of samples taken, their representativeness, and the virology results obtained, comparing them with the rest of the sentinel system over the same weeks.ResultsA total of 312 POCTs were performed; 276 were used for quantitative analysis, of which 60 were positive for influenza and 216 were negative. The average swabbing rate was 0.4 per 1000 population and swab positivity was between 16.7% (n = 14/84) and 41.4% (n = 12/29). Given a positive influenza POCT result, the odds ratio of receiving an antiviral was 14.1 (95% confidence intervals [CI] = 2.9 to 70.0, P<0.001) and of receiving an antibiotic was 0.4 (95% CI = 0.2 to 0.8, P = 0.01), compared with patients with a negative result. Qualitative analysis showed that it was feasible for practices to implement POCT, but there is considerable variation in the processes used.ConclusionTesting for influenza using POCT is feasible in primary care and may improve antimicrobial use. However, further evidence from randomised trials of influenza POCT in general practice is needed.

AbstractStatistical profiling algorithms claiming to predict which jobseekers are at risk of becoming long‐term unemployed are spread unevenly across countries. However, the pathways and histories of these tools are understudied. Because the profiling path in France is a winding one, it is fruitful to study the production of profiling acceptability within the Public Employment Service (PES), and upstream of its reception by frontline advisers. Using a mix of interviews and written sources, we show that the production of profiling acceptability sits at the crossroads of two processes: technical and political transformations of the instrument itself and broader institutional and managerial transformations of the PES. On the basis of this case study, the paper enriches our understanding of the slow and incremental rationalization of public services that we have termed “professional rationalization.” We argue that, far from being a softened or moderated form of bureaucratic rationalization, it is powerful—perhaps even irreversible—precisely because it transforms its target (frontline advisers) before the rationalization instrument is even deployed.

Unfortunately, current treatment options demonstrate limited benefits. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of ACY-1215, a histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi), to attenuate growth of primary ocular UM cell lines and, in particular, a liver MUM cell line in vitro and in vivo, and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. A significant (p = 0.0001) dose-dependent reduction in surviving clones of the primary ocular UM cells, Mel270, was observed upon treatment with increasing doses of ACY-1215. Treatment of OMM2.5 MUM cells with ACY-1215 resulted in a significant (p = 0.0001), dose-dependent reduction in cell survival and proliferation in vitro, and in vivo attenuation of primary OMM2.5 xenografts in zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, flow cytometry revealed that ACY-1215 significantly arrested the OMM2.5 cell cycle in S phase (p = 0.0001) following 24 h of treatment, and significant apoptosis was triggered in a time-and dose-dependent manner (p < 0.0001). Additionally, ACY-1215 treatment resulted in a significant reduction in OMM2.5 p-ERK expression levels. Through proteome profiling, the attenuation of the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) signaling pathway was linked to the observed anti-cancer effects of ACY-1215. In agreement, pharmacological inhibition of MITF signaling with ML329 significantly reduced OMM2.5 cell survival and viability in vitro (p = 0.0001) and reduced OMM2.5 cells in vivo (p = 0.0006). Our findings provide evidence that ACY-1215 and ML329 are efficacious against growth and survival of OMM2.5 MUM cells. High-throughput sequencing of microbial assemblages has been proposed as an alternative methodology to the traditional ones used in marine monitoring and environmental assessment. Here, we evaluated pico- and nanoplankton diversity as ecological indicators in NW Mediterranean coastal waters by comparing their diversity in samples subjected to varying degrees of continental pressures. Using metabarcoding of the 16S and 18S rRNA genes, we explored whether alphadiversity indices, abundance of Operational Taxonomic Units and taxonomic groups (and their ratios) provide information on the ecological quality of coastal waters. Our results revealed that only eukaryotic diversity metrics and a limited number of prokaryotic and eukaryotic taxa displayed potential in assessing continental influences in our surveyed area, resulting thus in a restrained potential of microbial plankton diversity as an ecological indicator.
