ORAL; International audience; In this paper, a study of UWB receivers in terms of detection theory is presented. The UWB radar which is presented in many works previously [1]-[3] has many applications. For road UWB radar application, the receiver based on correlation is the optimum receiver [4]. In fact, it maximizes the probability of detection. We will consider, in this study, a correlator receiver based on a threshold detection method. As in narrowband [5] [6], we will describe the theoretical study that evaluates the performance of the UWB receiver based on correlation in terms of detection and false alarm probabilities. Then a study of curves showing threshold receiver operating characteristics (ROC system), based on correlation and destined to be used for a UWB radar is presented. The study is original because it is presented for the first time in a UWB radar system.

The MaaS Observatory ("L’Observatoire du MaaS") is an initiative of the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and CEREMA (Centre for studies and expertise on risks, the environment, mobility and development), which, have developed a tool with their partners for sharing knowledge about MaaS in France. This tool is based on a mapping of ninety-three systems tending towards MaaS, including their detailed characteristics, as well as on a set of working groups whose objective is to produce knowledge on this topic. The study of this public initiative makes it possible to establish a geography of MaaS in France on 1st January 2022, which we will present in this paper. We seek to contribute and deepen the work on the evaluation of MaaS (Jittrapirom et al, 2017), in particular on the spatial institutional challenges and key performance indicators developed in the academic literature (Zhao et al., 2021). We carry out an analysis of the Observatory's databases to describe governance and stakeholders, the scope and modes of transport considered, and the level of service. We will put the nature of MaaS in France into perspective in relation to some emblematic foreign cases analysed by CEREMA. (2019). The challenge is to refine the limits of a geography of MaaS in order to identify its potential to activate inclusive and low-carbon mobility. The first results tend to show that MaaS in France is developed within the urban perimeters of the mobility organising authorities (AOM) with the public transport operators. The AOM-operator pairing remains characteristic of a French way (Ribeill, 1986) and questions the spatial and intermodal integration of mobility in metropolitan areas

Consacré à la question de la traduction en matière de mathématiques, qu’il aborde ici par l’intermédiaire d’un acteur particulier, l’« élève », à la fois destinataire et, parfois, producteur de traductions, le présent article se structure principalement autour de trois études de cas. La première concerne la production, dans les États-Unis des années 1820 et 1830, d’une série de manuels de mathématiques et de mécanique théorique, élaborés à partir de manuels français et destinés aux étudiants de l’Université Harvard et de l’Académie militaire de West Point. La seconde s’attache à la traduction, en 1828, d’un manuel anglais dans l’espace germanophone. La troisième se penche sur la presse mathématique française de la première moitié du xixe siècle, illustrée ici par le journal des candidats à l’École polytechnique et à l’École normale (Nouvelles annales de mathématiques) et le journal des « progrès en mathématiques » (Journal de mathématiques pures et appliquées). Les objectifs poursuivis consistent à faire émerger des points saillants, à identifier des pistes prometteuses pour la suite de l’enquête, et à tenter d’établir un premier bilan, provisoire et sujet à des modifications, sur la question de la traduction mathématique et de ses éventuelles spécificités par rapport aux traductions relevant d’autres domaines. This article, based on three case studies, deals with the “translation” issue in the field of mathematics, here addressed through the specific figure of the “student,” simultaneously recipient, but sometimes also author, of translations. The first case study concerns American adaptations of a series of French mathematics and mechanics textbooks geared towards students at Harvard and at West Point Military Academy in the 1820s and 1830s. The second considers the 1828 translation of an English textbook in a German-speaking environment. The third focuses on two 19th century French mathematics journals that regularly published translations: the first was intended for École polytechnique or École normale candidates (Nouvelles annales de mathématiques) while the second was concerned with “the progress in mathematics” (Journal de mathématiques pures et appliquées). The article seeks to pinpoint highlights, identify promising investigative pathways and, finally, attempt to offer an initial and temporary assessment, subject to modification, of the question of mathematics translation and its possible specificities in relation to translations in other fields.

Places affected by urban shrinkage are widely depicted as left behind places characterized by decline and decay. Refugees are generally constructed as victims or ‘dangerous other’. Hence, place-making and negotiations of belonging in shrinking cities are accompanied by multiple layers of stigmatization. Despite this contextual factor and even though many questions related to inter-group relations in shrinking cities are still unanswered, refugee-centered revitalization of shrinking cities is being discussed among city officials, planners and in the scientific community. This paper investigates local discourses on urban shrinkage and refugee arrival as contextual factors for negotiations of place and belonging, and connects to previous studies on the stigmatization of declining cities and the othering of refugees. It uses Nayak’s (2019) concept of re-scripting narratives to analyze whether acts of re-writing apply not only to stigmatizations of place, but marginalized groups as well. The paper finds that while dominant discourses on place are contested and at times re-scripted by local actors, discourses which construct refugees as other are reaffirmed. Confirming previous findings according to which stigma was passed on to other marginalized groups, it concludes that there is a need to consider dominant discourses and their negative impact on social cohesion in debates around refugee-centered revitalization.

TIGF is one of the French operator which manages 5000 km of pipelines in the south-west quarter of France. This paper presents a decision-making tool which automatically ranks the pipeline sections regarding the risk of deterioration (damages and corrosion) and the gravity of the consequences, indicating which pipeline sections should be excavated. The tool relies on a fuzzy expert system which gathers 26 input variables, processes more than 300 rules, classifies the risk of deterioration into 7 classes and estimates the gravity. The rules are a formalization of human expertise: the fuzzy logic helps to tackle the vagueness of their knowledge and the measurement inaccuracy of some of the 26 input variables. The method has been tested on past excavations to assess its performances.

Abstract. Oxygen optode measurements on floats and gliders suffer from a slow time response and sensors that are or eventually run out of calibration. Based on two dual-O2 Argo floats, we show how to post-correct for the effect of the optode’s time response and give an update on optode in-situ drift stability and in-air calibration. Both floats are equipped with an unpumped Aanderaa 4330 optode and a pumped Sea-Bird SBE63 optode. Response times for the pumped SBE63 were derived after Bittig et al. (2014). Also their methods were used to correct the time response bias. Using both optodes on each float, the time response regime of the unpumped Aanderaa optode was characterized more accurately than previously possible. Response times for the pumped SBE63 are in the range of 25–40 s, while they are between 60–95 s for the unpumped 4330 optode. Our parameterization can be employed to post-correct the slow optode time response on floats and gliders. After correction, both sensors agree to within 2–3 μmol kg−1 (median difference) in the strongest gradients (120 μmol kg−1 change over 8 minutes or 20 dbar) and better elsewhere. However, time response correction is only possible if measurement times are known, i.e., provided by the platform as well as transmitted and stored with the data. The O2 in-air measurements show a significant in-situ optode drift of −0.4 % yr−1 and −0.2 % yr−1, respectively. Optode in-air measurements are systematically biased high during mid-day surfacings compared to dusk, dawn, and nighttime. While preference can be given to nighttime surfacings to avoid this in-air calibration bias, we suggest a parameterization of the daytime effect as function of the sun’s elevation to be able to use all data and to better constrain the result. Taking all effects into account, calibration factors have an uncertainty of 0.1 %. In addition, in-air calibration factors vary by 0.1–0.2 % when using different reanalysis models as reference. The overall accuracy that can be achieved following the proposed correction routines is <1 μmol kg−1.

However, the highest risk is probably occupational exposure due to proximity. Jet exhaust is one of the main concerns at an airport and may have a health impact, particularly on the respiratory tract. Current studies are neither numerous enough nor strong enough to prove this kind of association. Yet, more and more people work in airports, and occupational exposure to jet exhaust is a fact. The aim of this review was to evaluate the existing knowledge regarding the impact of airport pollution on respiratory health. We conducted systematic literature searches to examine workplace exposures.

Nous constatons que les modèles proposés en recherche opérationnelle ne sont pas toujours suffisants pour traiter les problèmes réels car ils se focalisent trop sur l'optimisation au détriment des aspects planification. Pour dépasser ces limitations, un modèle explicite de gestion de flotte est proposé. Il permet de décrire des actions complexes composées de mouvements d'associations et de dissociations d'objets composites et formalise les différentes contraintes qui assurent que ces actions sont réalisables. Ce modèle n'est pas purement théorique mais permet d'aborder la combinatoire des problèmes de transport contrairement à certaines approches utilisées en intelligence artificielle pour la planification. Des techniques de propagation de contraintes sont proposées pour animer ce modèle. Les propagateurs locaux ou globaux décrits s'appuient sur un graphe standard en recherche opérationnelle. Ils résolvent un problème central le multi-voyageur de commerce qui traduit la relation fondamentale du modèle. Ces propagateurs permettent de construire pour la première fois à notre connaissance des parcours contenant des positionnements de moyens et des véhicules décomposables. Afin de valider l'approche et de montrer son intérêt un prototype est présenté. Il a été réalisé pour l'entreprise de transport routier TAB spécialisé dans le ferroutage. La description met en avant l'aspect interactif et l'architecture proposée qui intègre les tâches de planification. Notre architecture s'appuie sur notre formalisation de la gestion de flotte et la coopération de fonctions utilisant différents principes de propagation. Ceci a permis de développer un système d'aide à la décision qui intègre l'opérateur et lui laisse le contrôle comme l'exige le problème traité. Thèse université Paris 7 spécialité informatique.

Climate detection and attribution (D&A) studies achieve this by estimating scaling factors usually obtained by performing a least squares regression of the observed trending climate variable on the equivalent variable simulated by a climate model. This study proposed instead to estimate scaling factors by using the econometric approach of dynamically modelling the time series as a cointegrating Vector Auto-Regressive (VAR) time series process. It is shown that a 2nd-order cointegrating VAR(2) model is theoretically justified if the observed and simulated variables can be represented as a one-box AR(1) response to a common integrated forcing. The VAR(2) model can be expressed as a Vector Error-Correction Model (VECM) and then fitted to the data to obtain the cointegration relationship, the stationary linear combination of the two variables, from which the scaling factor is then easily obtained. Estimates of the scaling factor from the VAR(2) model are critically compared to those from Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Total Least Squares (TLS) for annual Global Mean Surface Temperature (GMST) data simulated by a simple stochastic model of the carbon–climate system and for historical simulations from 16 climate models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) experiment. Results from the toy model simulations show that the slope estimates from OLS are negatively biased, TLS estimates are less biased but have high variance, and the VAR(2) estimates are unbiased and have lower variance and provide the most accurate estimates with smallest mean squared error. Similar behaviour is noted in the CMIP5 data. Hypothesis tests on the VAR(2) fits found strong evidence of a cointegrating relationship with the observations for all the CMIP5 simulations.

Existing literature does not draw conclusions as to which speedometer type is better for truck driving. A digital speedometer would be more beneficial when obtaining absolute and relative readings, while an analogue speedometer would be more efficient and less distracting when detecting dynamic speed changes. Redundant speedometers, which simultaneously present digital and analogue speedometers, appear increasingly in vehicles, but no information is available on their ergonomic qualities. This study compared three speedometers: digital speedometers, analogue speedometers, and redundant speedometers. This study compared the efficiency, usability and visual distraction measures for all three types of speedometers in a simulated truck driving setting. The task-dependant results were confirmed for the digital and analogue speedometer. The redundant speedometer combined the benefits of each type presented separately, which highlights interesting theoretical and applied implications.

The UWB radar which is presented in many works previously [1]-[3] has many applications. For road UWB radar application, the receiver based on correlation is the optimum receiver [4]. In fact, it maximizes the probability of detection. We will consider, in this study, a correlator receiver based on a threshold detection method. As in narrowband [5] [6], we will describe the theoretical study that evaluates the performance of the UWB receiver based on correlation in terms of detection and false alarm probabilities. Then a study of curves showing threshold receiver operating characteristics (ROC system), based on correlation and destined to be used for a UWB radar is presented. The study is original because it is presented for the first time in a UWB radar system.

The MaaS Observatory ("L’Observatoire du MaaS") is an initiative of the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and CEREMA (Centre for studies and expertise on risks, the environment, mobility and development), which, have developed a tool with their partners for sharing knowledge about MaaS in France. This tool is based on a mapping of ninety-three systems tending towards MaaS, including their detailed characteristics, as well as on a set of working groups whose objective is to produce knowledge on this topic. The study of this public initiative makes it possible to establish a geography of MaaS in France on 1st January 2022, which we will present in this paper. We seek to contribute and deepen the work on the evaluation of MaaS (Jittrapirom et al, 2017), in particular on the spatial institutional challenges and key performance indicators developed in the academic literature (Zhao et al., 2021). We carry out an analysis of the Observatory's databases to describe governance and stakeholders, the scope and modes of transport considered, and the level of service. We will put the nature of MaaS in France into perspective in relation to some emblematic foreign cases analysed by CEREMA. (2019). The challenge is to refine the limits of a geography of MaaS in order to identify its potential to activate inclusive and low-carbon mobility. The first results tend to show that MaaS in France is developed within the urban perimeters of the mobility organising authorities (AOM) with the public transport operators. The AOM-operator pairing remains characteristic of a French way (Ribeill, 1986) and questions the spatial and intermodal integration of mobility in metropolitan areas

Consacré à la question de la traduction en matière de mathématiques, qu’il aborde ici par l’intermédiaire d’un acteur particulier, l’« élève », à la fois destinataire et, parfois, producteur de traductions, le présent article se structure principalement autour de trois études de cas. La première concerne la production, dans les États-Unis des années 1820 et 1830, d’une série de manuels de mathématiques et de mécanique théorique, élaborés à partir de manuels français et destinés aux étudiants de l’Université Harvard et de l’Académie militaire de West Point. La seconde s’attache à la traduction, en 1828, d’un manuel anglais dans l’espace germanophone. La troisième se penche sur la presse mathématique française de la première moitié du xixe siècle, illustrée ici par le journal des candidats à l’École polytechnique et à l’École normale (Nouvelles annales de mathématiques) et le journal des « progrès en mathématiques » (Journal de mathématiques pures et appliquées). Les objectifs poursuivis consistent à faire émerger des points saillants, à identifier des pistes prometteuses pour la suite de l’enquête, et à tenter d’établir un premier bilan, provisoire et sujet à des modifications, sur la question de la traduction mathématique et de ses éventuelles spécificités par rapport aux traductions relevant d’autres domaines. This article, based on three case studies, deals with the “translation” issue in the field of mathematics, here addressed through the specific figure of the “student,” simultaneously recipient, but sometimes also author, of translations. The first case study concerns American adaptations of a series of French mathematics and mechanics textbooks geared towards students at Harvard and at West Point Military Academy in the 1820s and 1830s. The second considers the 1828 translation of an English textbook in a German-speaking environment. The third focuses on two 19th century French mathematics journals that regularly published translations: the first was intended for École polytechnique or École normale candidates (Nouvelles annales de mathématiques) while the second was concerned with “the progress in mathematics” (Journal de mathématiques pures et appliquées). The article seeks to pinpoint highlights, identify promising investigative pathways and, finally, attempt to offer an initial and temporary assessment, subject to modification, of the question of mathematics translation and its possible specificities in relation to translations in other fields.

Places affected by urban shrinkage are widely depicted as left behind places characterized by decline and decay. Refugees are generally constructed as victims or ‘dangerous other’. Hence, place-making and negotiations of belonging in shrinking cities are accompanied by multiple layers of stigmatization. Despite this contextual factor and even though many questions related to inter-group relations in shrinking cities are still unanswered, refugee-centered revitalization of shrinking cities is being discussed among city officials, planners and in the scientific community. This paper investigates local discourses on urban shrinkage and refugee arrival as contextual factors for negotiations of place and belonging, and connects to previous studies on the stigmatization of declining cities and the othering of refugees. It uses Nayak’s (2019) concept of re-scripting narratives to analyze whether acts of re-writing apply not only to stigmatizations of place, but marginalized groups as well. The paper finds that while dominant discourses on place are contested and at times re-scripted by local actors, discourses which construct refugees as other are reaffirmed. Confirming previous findings according to which stigma was passed on to other marginalized groups, it concludes that there is a need to consider dominant discourses and their negative impact on social cohesion in debates around refugee-centered revitalization.

TIGF is one of the French operator which manages 5000 km of pipelines in the south-west quarter of France. This paper presents a decision-making tool which automatically ranks the pipeline sections regarding the risk of deterioration (damages and corrosion) and the gravity of the consequences, indicating which pipeline sections should be excavated. The tool relies on a fuzzy expert system which gathers 26 input variables, processes more than 300 rules, classifies the risk of deterioration into 7 classes and estimates the gravity. The rules are a formalization of human expertise: the fuzzy logic helps to tackle the vagueness of their knowledge and the measurement inaccuracy of some of the 26 input variables. The method has been tested on past excavations to assess its performances.

Abstract. Oxygen optode measurements on floats and gliders suffer from a slow time response and sensors that are or eventually run out of calibration. Based on two dual-O2 Argo floats, we show how to post-correct for the effect of the optode’s time response and give an update on optode in-situ drift stability and in-air calibration. Both floats are equipped with an unpumped Aanderaa 4330 optode and a pumped Sea-Bird SBE63 optode. Response times for the pumped SBE63 were derived after Bittig et al. (2014). Also their methods were used to correct the time response bias. Using both optodes on each float, the time response regime of the unpumped Aanderaa optode was characterized more accurately than previously possible. Response times for the pumped SBE63 are in the range of 25–40 s, while they are between 60–95 s for the unpumped 4330 optode. Our parameterization can be employed to post-correct the slow optode time response on floats and gliders. After correction, both sensors agree to within 2–3 μmol kg−1 (median difference) in the strongest gradients (120 μmol kg−1 change over 8 minutes or 20 dbar) and better elsewhere. However, time response correction is only possible if measurement times are known, i.e., provided by the platform as well as transmitted and stored with the data. The O2 in-air measurements show a significant in-situ optode drift of −0.4 % yr−1 and −0.2 % yr−1, respectively. Optode in-air measurements are systematically biased high during mid-day surfacings compared to dusk, dawn, and nighttime. While preference can be given to nighttime surfacings to avoid this in-air calibration bias, we suggest a parameterization of the daytime effect as function of the sun’s elevation to be able to use all data and to better constrain the result. Taking all effects into account, calibration factors have an uncertainty of 0.1 %. In addition, in-air calibration factors vary by 0.1–0.2 % when using different reanalysis models as reference. The overall accuracy that can be achieved following the proposed correction routines is <1 μmol kg−1.

Current studies are neither numerous enough nor strong enough to prove this kind of association. Yet, more and more people work in airports, and occupational exposure to jet exhaust is a fact. The aim of this review was to evaluate the existing knowledge regarding the impact of airport pollution on respiratory health. We conducted systematic literature searches to examine workplace exposures.

Nous constatons que les modèles proposés en recherche opérationnelle ne sont pas toujours suffisants pour traiter les problèmes réels car ils se focalisent trop sur l'optimisation au détriment des aspects planification. Pour dépasser ces limitations, un modèle explicite de gestion de flotte est proposé. Il permet de décrire des actions complexes composées de mouvements d'associations et de dissociations d'objets composites et formalise les différentes contraintes qui assurent que ces actions sont réalisables. Ce modèle n'est pas purement théorique mais permet d'aborder la combinatoire des problèmes de transport contrairement à certaines approches utilisées en intelligence artificielle pour la planification. Des techniques de propagation de contraintes sont proposées pour animer ce modèle. Les propagateurs locaux ou globaux décrits s'appuient sur un graphe standard en recherche opérationnelle. Ils résolvent un problème central le multi-voyageur de commerce qui traduit la relation fondamentale du modèle. Ces propagateurs permettent de construire pour la première fois à notre connaissance des parcours contenant des positionnements de moyens et des véhicules décomposables. Afin de valider l'approche et de montrer son intérêt un prototype est présenté. Il a été réalisé pour l'entreprise de transport routier TAB spécialisé dans le ferroutage. La description met en avant l'aspect interactif et l'architecture proposée qui intègre les tâches de planification. Notre architecture s'appuie sur notre formalisation de la gestion de flotte et la coopération de fonctions utilisant différents principes de propagation. Ceci a permis de développer un système d'aide à la décision qui intègre l'opérateur et lui laisse le contrôle comme l'exige le problème traité. Thèse université Paris 7 spécialité informatique.

Adapting to human-induced climate change is becoming an increasingly important aspect of sustainable development. To be able to do this effectively, it is important to know how much human influence has contributed to observed climate trends. Climate detection and attribution (D&A) studies achieve this by estimating scaling factors usually obtained by performing a least squares regression of the observed trending climate variable on the equivalent variable simulated by a climate model. This study proposed instead to estimate scaling factors by using the econometric approach of dynamically modelling the time series as a cointegrating Vector Auto-Regressive (VAR) time series process. It is shown that a 2nd-order cointegrating VAR(2) model is theoretically justified if the observed and simulated variables can be represented as a one-box AR(1) response to a common integrated forcing. The VAR(2) model can be expressed as a Vector Error-Correction Model (VECM) and then fitted to the data to obtain the cointegration relationship, the stationary linear combination of the two variables, from which the scaling factor is then easily obtained. Estimates of the scaling factor from the VAR(2) model are critically compared to those from Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Total Least Squares (TLS) for annual Global Mean Surface Temperature (GMST) data simulated by a simple stochastic model of the carbon–climate system and for historical simulations from 16 climate models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) experiment. Results from the toy model simulations show that the slope estimates from OLS are negatively biased, TLS estimates are less biased but have high variance, and the VAR(2) estimates are unbiased and have lower variance and provide the most accurate estimates with smallest mean squared error. Similar behaviour is noted in the CMIP5 data. Hypothesis tests on the VAR(2) fits found strong evidence of a cointegrating relationship with the observations for all the CMIP5 simulations.

Existing literature does not draw conclusions as to which speedometer type is better for truck driving. A digital speedometer would be more beneficial when obtaining absolute and relative readings, while an analogue speedometer would be more efficient and less distracting when detecting dynamic speed changes. Redundant speedometers, which simultaneously present digital and analogue speedometers, appear increasingly in vehicles, but no information is available on their ergonomic qualities. This study compared three speedometers: digital speedometers, analogue speedometers, and redundant speedometers. This study compared the efficiency, usability and visual distraction measures for all three types of speedometers in a simulated truck driving setting. The task-dependant results were confirmed for the digital and analogue speedometer. The redundant speedometer combined the benefits of each type presented separately, which highlights interesting theoretical and applied implications.
