3 and 4.5 m a.m.s.l., are fragments of an upper Pleistocene aeolianite, which is overlaying unconformly a lower Pleistocene calcarenite. Dimensions and spatial distribution of 272 small, medium, and large boulders were documented, while their precise distance from the coastline was recorded by field mapping and remote sensing, using Differential GPS (DGPS), drone, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technics. Field data were subsequently combined with hydrodynamic equations, in order to determine the extreme event(s) that caused their transport inland, and radiocarbon dating was accomplished on three samples of Vermetus sp. to determine the chronological context. Our findings appear to broadly correlate with the 1303 AD tsunami, which has displaced at least part of the studied boulders, and one other undocumented event at AD 1512-1824. The large number of boulders and sizes in our study area further indicate that their dislocation is most likely owed to multiple events from various sources. Cyprus has a long history of tsunami events, as noted by archaeological and geological records. At Cape Greco (southeastern Cyprus) large boulders have been noted, however, no detailed geomorphological research has taken place so far and the related high energy event was undated until now. Our research aims to record in detail and interpret these large boulders deposits. The boulders, located between &asymp

New particle formation in the atmosphere produces around half of the cloud condensation nuclei that seed cloud droplets. Such particles have a pivotal role in determining the properties of clouds and the global radiation balance. Dunne et al. used the CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber at CERN to construct a model of aerosol formation based on laboratory measured nucleation rates. They found that nearly all nucleation involves either ammonia or biogenic organic compounds. Furthermore in the present day atmosphere cosmic ray intensity cannot meaningfully affect climate via nucleation.Science this issue p. 1119Fundamental questions remain about the origin of newly formed atmospheric aerosol particles because data from laboratory measurements have been insufficient to build global models. In contrast gas phase chemistry models have been based on laboratory kinetics measurements for decades. We built a global model of aerosol formation by using extensive laboratory measurements of rates of nucleation involving sulfuric acid ammonia ions and organic compounds conducted in the CERN CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber. The simulations and a comparison with atmospheric observations show that nearly all nucleation throughout the present day atmosphere involves ammonia or biogenic organic compounds in addition to sulfuric acid. A considerable fraction of nucleation involves ions but the relatively weak dependence on ion concentrations indicates that for the processes studied variations in cosmic ray intensity do not appreciably affect climate through nucleation in the present day atmosphere.U http://science.sciencemag.org/content/sci/354/6316/1119.full.pdf

Pandis; +1 AuthorsGeorgios Kosmopoulos; Vasileios Salamalikis; Angeliki Matrali; Spyros N. Pandis; Andreas Kazantzidis;PM2.5 measurements using a network of lost-cost sensors were conducted during 2017–2019 in the greater area of Patras, Greece. The average PM2.5 concentration in all sites during the study period was 9.4 μg m−3, varying from 6.2 μg m−3 in the background areas to 12.8 μg m−3 at the city center. The site with the peak PM2.5 levels was not located in an area with high traffic density but rather in a square with pedestrian-only zones and a high restaurant density. The highest PM2.5 concentrations were observed during the colder period (November–March) due to high emissions from residential wood burning for heating purposes. The measurements of the sensors were used to estimate the importance of regional and local PM2.5 sources. During the warm period, regional transport dominated, contributing approximately 80–85% of the PM2.5 in the city center; however, during the colder period, the local sources were responsible for approximately half the PM2.5. The network operated reliably during this multiyear study. Such measurements provide, at a very low cost, valuable insights not only about the temporal and spatial variability of PM2.5 in a city but also about its sources, including the role of regional transport.

The purpose of this study is the analysis of radar data, digitally recorded, during an operational hail suppression program in the region of Central Macedonia, Greece, for the warm period of the years 1997–2001. Kinematic characteristics, such as lifetime and distance traveled by hailstorms, as well as direction of motion and speed, have been related to type of storms and season. It has been found that singlecells are short-lived and travel short distances, while multicells are long-lived and travel long distances. On the contrary, their corresponding speed distributions are similar. The deviation of the direction of motion from mean wind is smaller for singlecells than for multicells. September and July exhibit the maximum and minimum average storm speeds as a direct implication of synoptic disturbances passage and convection, prevailing respectively. Finally, storms overcoming orographic barriers decelerate in general on the windward side and accelerate on the lee side of mountains.

Kalos; M. Kavvadas;D. Georgiou; A. Kalos; M. Kavvadas;Abstract The paper studies the stability of unsupported tunnel faces by analyzing the results of a large number of 3D numerical analyses of tunnel faces, in various ground conditions and overburden depths. The analyses calculate the average face extrusion (Uh) by averaging the axial displacement over the tunnel face. Limiting face stability occurs when the average face extrusion becomes very large and algorithmic convergence becomes problematic. Using the results of the analyses, a dimensionless “face stability parameter” is defined, which depends on a suitable combination of ground strength, overburden depth and tunnel width. The face stability parameter correlates very well with many critical tunnel face parameters, like the safety factor of the tunnel against face instability, the average face extrusion, the radial convergence of the tunnel wall at the excavation face, the volume loss and the deconfinement ratio at the tunnel face. Thus, semi-empirical formulae are proposed for the calculation of these parameters in terms of the face stability parameter. Since the face stability parameter can be easily calculated from basic tunnel and ground parameters, the above critical tunnel parameters can be calculated, and conclusions can be drawn about tunnel face stability, volume loss and the deconfinement ratio at the excavation face which can be useful in preliminary tunnel designs.

Clerc; Manolis Plionis; Jean Surdej; Marguerite Pierre; Spyros Basilakos; L. Chiappetti; Poshak Gandhi; Eric Gosset; O. V. Melnyk; Florian Pacaud; Our aim is to study the large-scale structure of different types of AGN using the medium-deep XMM-LSS survey. We measure the two-point angular correlation function of ~ 5700 and 2500 X-ray point-like sources over the ~ 11 sq. deg. XMM-LSS field in the soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (2-10 keV) bands. For the conversion from the angular to the spatial correlation function we used the Limber integral equation and the luminosity-dependent density evolution model of the AGN X-ray luminosity function. We have found significant angular correlations with the power-law parameters gamma = 1.81 +/- 0.02, theta_0 = 1.3" +/- 0.2" for the soft, and gamma = 2.00 +/- 0.04, theta_0 = 7.3" +/- 1.0" for the hard bands. The amplitude of the correlation function w(theta) is higher in the hard than in the soft band for f_x < 10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2 and lower above this flux limit. We confirm that the clustering strength theta_0 grows with the flux limit of the sample, a trend which is also present in the amplitude of the spatial correlation function, but only for the soft band. In the hard band, it remains almost constant with r_0 = 10h^-1$ Mpc, irrespective of the flux limit. Our analysis of AGN subsamples with different hardness ratios shows that the sources with a hard-spectrum are more clustered than soft-spectrum ones. This result may be a hint that the two main types of AGN populate different environments. Finally, we find that our clustering results correspond to an X-ray selected AGN bias factor of ~ 2.5 for the soft-band sources (at a median z = 1.1) and ~ 3.3 for the hard-band sources (at a median z = 1), which translates into a host dark matter halo mass of ~ 10^13 h^-1 M_o and ~ 10^13.7 h^-1 M_o for the soft and hard bands, respectively. 14 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Sigurðardóttir; The determination of the current and past recharge sources, as well as the reconstruction of the timing of the recharge in geothermal reservoirs, is required in order to correctly assess the resource potential of these systems. Theistareykir is a newly developed geothermal field close to the well-known exploited fields of Krafla and Námafjall in NE Iceland. In this study, the 87Sr/86Sr ratios measured in deep geothermal fluids are presented and, together with the Cl and noble gas signatures, are used to place constraints on the fluid sources. The Cl/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios show a peculiar and unique composition among Icelandic geothermal fluids. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios range from 0.70355 to 0.70671, suggesting the presence of a significant seawater component—possibly marine aerosols added to rain or snowfall—as well as an additional source of Sr leached from local basalts. Moreover, a correlation between the atmospheric noble gas (ANGs) elemental ratios Ne/Ar, Kr/Ar and Xe/Ar, and the 87Sr/86Sr ratios is observed. The latter results from the mixing of meteoric water with Sr leached from local basalts, meteoric water containing unrelated Sr from seawater, and recharge water with ANGs derived from trapped air bubbles in snow. We suggest that the combined ANGs and Sr seawater signatures are representative of a glacial water source derived from the melting of compacting snow.

V.;Boumis, P.; Mavromatakis, F.; Paleologou, E. V.;Deep optical CCD images of the supernova remnant G 17.4-2.3 were obtained and faint emission has been discovered. The images, taken in the emission lines of Halpha+[N II], [S II] and [O III], reveal filamentary structures in the east, south-east area, while diffuse emission in the south and central regions of the remnant is also present. The radio emission in the same area is found to be well correlated with the brightest optical filament. The flux calibrated images suggest that the optical filamentary emission originates from shock-heated gas ([S II]/Halpha > 0.4), while the diffuse emission seems to originate from an HII region ([S II]/Halpha < 0.3). Furthermore, deep long-slit spectra were taken at the bright [O III] filament and clearly show that the emission originates from shock heated gas. The [O III] flux suggests shock velocities into the interstellar "clouds" greater than 100 km/s, while the [S II] 6716/6731 ratio indicates electron densities ~240 cm^{-3}. Finally, the Halpha emission has been measured to be between 7 to 20 x 10^{-17} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} arcsec^{-2}. 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A
