An important requirement for Internet of Things applications is the ability to provide fast and energy efficient data collection from wireless sensors. When sensor nodes are located far from the data collection point, currently available long range protocols present challenges associated with a very low data rate and often unreliable connections resulting in excessive energy consumption related to data transmission. To address this problem, we propose a simple and energy-efficient data collection architecture for smart agricultural purposes which require wireless sensing. The architecture involves data collection from nodes located in remote fields or on animals leveraging off the use of drones as a data collection mechanism. In particular, drones can fly over the desired areas (points) and collect high volumes of data that would be otherwise difficult to transfer directly to the sink in a reasonable amount of time and using reasonable amounts of energy. We describe the different components and stages that constitute the proposed architecture emphasizing the networking component. We propose the use of different communication technologies, such as LoRa and WiFi, depending on the data collection requirements. We present an in-lab development of this architecture as a proof-of-concept as well as preliminary results for the architecture. The results reveal that the proposed solution is potentially capable of achieving data collection at high volume, however, the performance does not consider the highest spreading factors of LoRa.

peer-reviewed Land use change is fundamentally a product of the interaction of physical land characteristics, economic considerations and agricultural and environmental policies. Researchers are increasingly combining physical and socio-economic spatial data to investigate the drivers of land-use change in relation to policy and economic developments. Focusing on Ireland, this study develops a panel data set of annual afforestation over 2811 small-area boundaries between 1993 and 2007 from vector and raster data sources. Soil type and other physical characteristics are combined with the net returns of converting agricultural land to forestry, based on the micro-simulation of individual farm incomes, to investigate land conversion. A spatial econometric approach is adopted to model the data and a range of physical, economic and policy factors are identified as having a significant effect on afforestation rates. In addition to the financial returns, the availability and quality of land and the implementation of environmental protection policies are identified as important factors in land conversion. The implications of these factors for the goal of forest expansion are discussed in relation to conflicting current and future land use policies. Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

However, intensification of pasture-based production can have adverse impacts on biodiversity and the environment. To date, studies on pro-environmental diversification options leading to improvement of environmental performance of pasture-based dairy and beef production have rarely been synthesized. The present study sought to review current on-farm pro-environmental measures with the potential for enhancing biodiversity status and/or reducing the environmental impacts of pasture-based agriculture. Literature on farmer attitudes toward these measures was also reviewed to identify potential obstacles and opportunities for transitioning to pro-environmental agriculture. A systematic search of published research from high-income island countries characterized by oceanic temperate climate with a high dependence on pasture-based agriculture—the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, was conducted. Thirty studies that assessed the impact of pro-environmental measures, eight ‘attitudinal’ studies of dairy and beef farmers and one study covering both aspects were identified. Inductive thematical analysis was subsequently undertaken. Environmentally sensitive management practices such as hedgerows and field margins management, mixed grazing (where two or more herbivorous animals graze the same land), rare livestock breeds, multispecies swards, organic farming and agroforestry were identified as primary themes studied under the auspices of pro-environmental diversification, while forestry, bioenergy crops and organic farming were the main themes identified within attitudinal research studies. Findings suggest that environmentally sensitive practices have varied effects on biodiversity. Mixed grazing was found to improve livestock production, while studies of organic farming reported multiple positive impacts on biodiversity and animal welfare. Effect of multispecies swards on methane emissions and urinary nitrogen extraction were found to be inconsistent. Attitudinal research suggests that the main barrier to implementing afforestation is its lack of attractiveness compared to ‘traditional’ farming and that organic farmer decisions regarding agricultural management practices might be less profit-oriented and influenced by ecological beliefs to a greater extent than decisions of conventional farmers. The results of this study confirm that pro-environmental diversification inherently encompasses multiple scientific disciplines; however, previous study designs and outcomes were found to be fragmented and narrowly focused. Considering the urgency and importance of climate and biodiversity crises, pro-environmental diversification of pasture-based dairy and beef production has rarely been holistically approached and remains understudied. The development of practical, sustainable solutions for farming based on circular economy and respect to nature and additional strategies to increase farmer and consumer environmental awareness should be prioritized by policymakers, advisory and scientific bodies.

This developed method uses absolute GPS positioning, map matched, to locate the vehicle on a road centre-line, when GPS is known to be sufficiently accurate. MMGPS software has now been adapted to incorporate positioning based on odometer derived distances (OMMGPS), when GPS positions are not available. Relative GPS positions are used to calibrate the odometer. If a GPS position is detected to be inaccurate, it is not used for positioning, or for calibrating the odometer correction factor. In OMMGPS, GPS pseudorange observations are combined with DTM height information and odometer positions to provide a vehicle position at ‘1 s’ epochs. The described experiment used GPS and odometer observations taken on a London bus on a predefined route in central of London. Therefore, map matching techniques are used to test GPS positioning accuracy, and to identify grossly inaccurate GPS positions. In total, over 15,000 vehicle positions were computed and tested using OMMGPS. In general, the position quality provided by GPS alone was extremely poor, due to multipath effects caused by the urban canyons of central London, so that odometer positioning was used much more often to position the vehicle than GPS. Typically, the ratio is 7:3 odometer positions to GPS positions. In the case of one particular trip, OMMGPS provides a mean error of position of 8.8 m compared with 53.7 m for raw GPS alone.

Picea sitchensis, Sitka spruce, is of interest to forestry as both a conservation species and a highly productive crop. Its native range stretches from Alaska to California, and it is hence distributed across a large environmental cline with areas of local adaptation. The IUFRO collection, established in 1968–1970, consists of 81 provenances of commercial and scientific interest spanning this native range. We used genotyping-by-sequencing on 1177 genotypes, originating from 80 of the IUFRO provenances which occupy 19 geographic regions of the Pacific Northwest, resulting in an SNP database of 36,567 markers. We detected low levels of genetic differentiation across this broad environmental cline, in agreement with other studies. However, we discovered island effects on geographically distant populations, such as those on Haida Gwaii and Kodiak Island. Using glaciation data, alongside this database, we see apparent post-glacial recolonization of the mainland from islands and the south of the range. Genotyping the IUFRO population expands upon the use of the collection in three ways: (i) providing information to breeders on genetic diversity which can be implemented into breeding programs, optimizing genetic gain for important traits; (ii) serving a scientific resource for studying spruce species; and (iii) utilizing provenances in breeding programs which are more tolerant to climate change.

Aerosol dynamical box model simulations of coastal new particle formation were performed in order to investigate the nucleation and growth mechanisms in this environment. In the simulations the nucleating vapor was assumed to be iodine dioxide (OIO). Both Eulerian and Lagrangian type simulations were made and compared with observations. We tested three nucleation mechanisms: kinetic nucleation of OIO (K × [OIO]2), activation of clusters by OIO (A × [OIO]) and sulphuric acid‐induced activation of clusters containing OIO (B × [OIO] × [H2SO4]). All the nucleation mechanisms provided reasonable results, although the growth of particles due to condensation is inadequate in kinetic nucleation cases as compared with experimental measurements. Growth of newly formed particles could be assisted by any low‐volatility vapors should their concentration exceed 109 cm−3. Using the obtained values of coefficients K, A, and B we found that nucleation driven by iodine compounds in remote marine areas is possible, but by OIO and H2SO4 alone, only a minor fraction of newly formed particles is likely to reach detectable sizes. Owing to the scavenging by coagulation with background aerosol particles, few of them will likely reach climatically relevant sizes by acting as seed particles for other low‐volatility vapors. In order to elucidate the significance of our results, more detailed measurements of OIO source and photolysis rates, dimensions of precursor areas, and particle chemical composition are needed.

Patient-handling slides are the most recently introduced moving and handling aid. At present, there is little research-based information available on their use. This study compared four slides currently used in patient moving and handling. Two tasks were performed with each slide, and the ease of learning how to use them and the ease of use of each slide was evaluated.

Disc diffusion screening and bioautography of OMW were compared to the phenolic extracts of table-olive brines. Positive activity against S. aureus was demonstrated. The optimization of chromatographic separation revealed that hexane/acetone in the ratio of 4:6 was the most effective for phenolic compounds separation. A HPLC-MS analysis was performed showing that only two compounds, hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, were the predominant phenolic compounds in all OPW. The phenolic extract of OMW generated by a semi-modern process showed the highest free radical-scavenging activity (DPPH assay) compared to the other phenolic extracts. It is apparent from the present study that OPW are a rich source of antioxidants suitable for use in food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical applications.

Hence they are implicated in women’s experience of life within a ‘farm family’. Following on from this it may be said that women’ s continued subordination in Irish farming or indeed their chances of achieving equal status are circumscribed by dominant discourses.

The importance of 3D winds (in particular updraft) in atmospheric science has motivated the adaptation of airborne wind instruments developed for manned aircraft, to the small size of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). Simultaneously, enhancements in RPAS technology have increased their contribution to many fields. In atmospheric research, lightweight RPAS (< 2.5 kg) are now able to accurately measure 3D wind vectors, even in a cloud, which provides new observing tools for understanding aerosol-cloud interactions. The European project BACCHUS (Impact of Biogenic versus Anthropogenic Emissions on Clouds and Climate: towards a Holistic Understanding) focuses on these specific interactions. Vertical wind velocity at cloud base is a key parameter for aerosol-cloud interactions. To measure the three components of wind, one RPAS is equipped with a 5-hole probe and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), synchronized on an acquisition system. The 5-hole probe is calibrated and validated on a multi-axis platform in a wind tunnel, each probe and its associated pressure sensors have specific calibration coefficients. Once mounted on a RPAS, 3D winds and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) derived from the 5-hole probe are validated with a sonic anemometer on a meteorological mast. During the BACCHUS field campaign at Mace Head (Ireland), a fleet of RPAS has been utilized to profile the atmosphere and complement ground-based and satellite observations. To study aerosol-cloud interactions, the RPAS with the 5-hole probe flew at level legs near cloud base to measure vertical wind speeds. The vertical velocity measurements from RPAS are validated with vertical velocities derived from the Mace Head Doppler cloud radar, and the results illustrate the relationships between the distributions of vertical velocity and the different cloud fields.

An important requirement for Internet of Things applications is the ability to provide fast and energy efficient data collection from wireless sensors. When sensor nodes are located far from the data collection point, currently available long range protocols present challenges associated with a very low data rate and often unreliable connections resulting in excessive energy consumption related to data transmission. To address this problem, we propose a simple and energy-efficient data collection architecture for smart agricultural purposes which require wireless sensing. The architecture involves data collection from nodes located in remote fields or on animals leveraging off the use of drones as a data collection mechanism. In particular, drones can fly over the desired areas (points) and collect high volumes of data that would be otherwise difficult to transfer directly to the sink in a reasonable amount of time and using reasonable amounts of energy. We describe the different components and stages that constitute the proposed architecture emphasizing the networking component. We propose the use of different communication technologies, such as LoRa and WiFi, depending on the data collection requirements. We present an in-lab development of this architecture as a proof-of-concept as well as preliminary results for the architecture. The results reveal that the proposed solution is potentially capable of achieving data collection at high volume, however, the performance does not consider the highest spreading factors of LoRa.

peer-reviewed Land use change is fundamentally a product of the interaction of physical land characteristics, economic considerations and agricultural and environmental policies. Researchers are increasingly combining physical and socio-economic spatial data to investigate the drivers of land-use change in relation to policy and economic developments. Focusing on Ireland, this study develops a panel data set of annual afforestation over 2811 small-area boundaries between 1993 and 2007 from vector and raster data sources. Soil type and other physical characteristics are combined with the net returns of converting agricultural land to forestry, based on the micro-simulation of individual farm incomes, to investigate land conversion. A spatial econometric approach is adopted to model the data and a range of physical, economic and policy factors are identified as having a significant effect on afforestation rates. In addition to the financial returns, the availability and quality of land and the implementation of environmental protection policies are identified as important factors in land conversion. However, intensification of pasture-based production can have adverse impacts on biodiversity and the environment. To date, studies on pro-environmental diversification options leading to improvement of environmental performance of pasture-based dairy and beef production have rarely been synthesized. The present study sought to review current on-farm pro-environmental measures with the potential for enhancing biodiversity status and/or reducing the environmental impacts of pasture-based agriculture. Literature on farmer attitudes toward these measures was also reviewed to identify potential obstacles and opportunities for transitioning to pro-environmental agriculture. A systematic search of published research from high-income island countries characterized by oceanic temperate climate with a high dependence on pasture-based agriculture—the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, was conducted. Thirty studies that assessed the impact of pro-environmental measures, eight ‘attitudinal’ studies of dairy and beef farmers and one study covering both aspects were identified. Inductive thematical analysis was subsequently undertaken. Environmentally sensitive management practices such as hedgerows and field margins management, mixed grazing (where two or more herbivorous animals graze the same land), rare livestock breeds, multispecies swards, organic farming and agroforestry were identified as primary themes studied under the auspices of pro-environmental diversification, while forestry, bioenergy crops and organic farming were the main themes identified within attitudinal research studies. Findings suggest that environmentally sensitive practices have varied effects on biodiversity. Mixed grazing was found to improve livestock production, while studies of organic farming reported multiple positive impacts on biodiversity and animal welfare. Effect of multispecies swards on methane emissions and urinary nitrogen extraction were found to be inconsistent. Attitudinal research suggests that the main barrier to implementing afforestation is its lack of attractiveness compared to ‘traditional’ farming and that organic farmer decisions regarding agricultural management practices might be less profit-oriented and influenced by ecological beliefs to a greater extent than decisions of conventional farmers. The results of this study confirm that pro-environmental diversification inherently encompasses multiple scientific disciplines; however, previous study designs and outcomes were found to be fragmented and narrowly focused. Considering the urgency and importance of climate and biodiversity crises, pro-environmental diversification of pasture-based dairy and beef production has rarely been holistically approached and remains understudied. The development of practical, sustainable solutions for farming based on circular economy and respect to nature and additional strategies to increase farmer and consumer environmental awareness should be prioritized by policymakers, advisory and scientific bodies.

This developed method uses absolute GPS positioning, map matched, to locate the vehicle on a road centre-line, when GPS is known to be sufficiently accurate. MMGPS software has now been adapted to incorporate positioning based on odometer derived distances (OMMGPS), when GPS positions are not available. Relative GPS positions are used to calibrate the odometer. If a GPS position is detected to be inaccurate, it is not used for positioning, or for calibrating the odometer correction factor. In OMMGPS, GPS pseudorange observations are combined with DTM height information and odometer positions to provide a vehicle position at ‘1 s’ epochs. The described experiment used GPS and odometer observations taken on a London bus on a predefined route in central of London. Therefore, map matching techniques are used to test GPS positioning accuracy, and to identify grossly inaccurate GPS positions. In total, over 15,000 vehicle positions were computed and tested using OMMGPS. In general, the position quality provided by GPS alone was extremely poor, due to multipath effects caused by the urban canyons of central London, so that odometer positioning was used much more often to position the vehicle than GPS. Typically, the ratio is 7:3 odometer positions to GPS positions. In the case of one particular trip, OMMGPS provides a mean error of position of 8.8 m compared with 53.7 m for raw GPS alone.

Picea sitchensis, Sitka spruce, is of interest to forestry as both a conservation species and a highly productive crop. Its native range stretches from Alaska to California, and it is hence distributed across a large environmental cline with areas of local adaptation. The IUFRO collection, established in 1968–1970, consists of 81 provenances of commercial and scientific interest spanning this native range. We used genotyping-by-sequencing on 1177 genotypes, originating from 80 of the IUFRO provenances which occupy 19 geographic regions of the Pacific Northwest, resulting in an SNP database of 36,567 markers. We detected low levels of genetic differentiation across this broad environmental cline, in agreement with other studies. However, we discovered island effects on geographically distant populations, such as those on Haida Gwaii and Kodiak Island. Using glaciation data, alongside this database, we see apparent post-glacial recolonization of the mainland from islands and the south of the range. Genotyping the IUFRO population expands upon the use of the collection in three ways: (i) providing information to breeders on genetic diversity which can be implemented into breeding programs, optimizing genetic gain for important traits; (ii) serving a scientific resource for studying spruce species; and (iii) utilizing provenances in breeding programs which are more tolerant to climate change.

Aerosol dynamical box model simulations of coastal new particle formation were performed in order to investigate the nucleation and growth mechanisms in this environment. In the simulations the nucleating vapor was assumed to be iodine dioxide (OIO). Both Eulerian and Lagrangian type simulations were made and compared with observations. We tested three nucleation mechanisms: kinetic nucleation of OIO (K × [OIO]2), activation of clusters by OIO (A × [OIO]) and sulphuric acid‐induced activation of clusters containing OIO (B × [OIO] × [H2SO4]). All the nucleation mechanisms provided reasonable results, although the growth of particles due to condensation is inadequate in kinetic nucleation cases as compared with experimental measurements. Growth of newly formed particles could be assisted by any low‐volatility vapors should their concentration exceed 109 cm−3. Using the obtained values of coefficients K, A, and B we found that nucleation driven by iodine compounds in remote marine areas is possible, but by OIO and H2SO4 alone, only a minor fraction of newly formed particles is likely to reach detectable sizes. Owing to the scavenging by coagulation with background aerosol particles, few of them will likely reach climatically relevant sizes by acting as seed particles for other low‐volatility vapors. In order to elucidate the significance of our results, more detailed measurements of OIO source and photolysis rates, dimensions of precursor areas, and particle chemical composition are needed.

Patient-handling slides are the most recently introduced moving and handling aid. At present, there is little research-based information available on their use. This study compared four slides currently used in patient moving and handling. Two tasks were performed with each slide, and the ease of learning how to use them and the ease of use of each slide was evaluated.

Disc diffusion screening and bioautography of OMW were compared to the phenolic extracts of table-olive brines. Positive activity against S. aureus was demonstrated. The optimization of chromatographic separation revealed that hexane/acetone in the ratio of 4:6 was the most effective for phenolic compounds separation. A HPLC-MS analysis was performed showing that only two compounds, hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, were the predominant phenolic compounds in all OPW. The phenolic extract of OMW generated by a semi-modern process showed the highest free radical-scavenging activity (DPPH assay) compared to the other phenolic extracts. It is apparent from the present study that OPW are a rich source of antioxidants suitable for use in food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical applications.

Its aim was to explore the way women who are married to farmers but who are employed in paid employment off the farm are constructed in agricultural policy discourse. It was proposed that discourses encapsulate the values and interests of powerful actors and are constitutive in their effect. Hence they are implicated in women’s experience of life within a ‘farm family’. Following on from this it may be said that women’ s continued subordination in Irish farming or indeed their chances of achieving equal status are circumscribed by dominant discourses.

The importance of 3D winds (in particular updraft) in atmospheric science has motivated the adaptation of airborne wind instruments developed for manned aircraft, to the small size of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). Simultaneously, enhancements in RPAS technology have increased their contribution to many fields. In atmospheric research, lightweight RPAS (< 2.5 kg) are now able to accurately measure 3D wind vectors, even in a cloud, which provides new observing tools for understanding aerosol-cloud interactions. The European project BACCHUS (Impact of Biogenic versus Anthropogenic Emissions on Clouds and Climate: towards a Holistic Understanding) focuses on these specific interactions. Vertical wind velocity at cloud base is a key parameter for aerosol-cloud interactions. To measure the three components of wind, one RPAS is equipped with a 5-hole probe and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), synchronized on an acquisition system. The 5-hole probe is calibrated and validated on a multi-axis platform in a wind tunnel, each probe and its associated pressure sensors have specific calibration coefficients. Once mounted on a RPAS, 3D winds and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) derived from the 5-hole probe are validated with a sonic anemometer on a meteorological mast. During the BACCHUS field campaign at Mace Head (Ireland), a fleet of RPAS has been utilized to profile the atmosphere and complement ground-based and satellite observations. To study aerosol-cloud interactions, the RPAS with the 5-hole probe flew at level legs near cloud base to measure vertical wind speeds. The vertical velocity measurements from RPAS are validated with vertical velocities derived from the Mace Head Doppler cloud radar, and the results illustrate the relationships between the distributions of vertical velocity and the different cloud fields.
