In future power systems, widespread small-scale energy storage systems (ESSs) can be aggregated to provide ancillary services. In this context, a new load frequency control scheme which incorporates the energy storage aggregator (ESA) and its associated disturbance observer is proposed. The disturbance observer is designed to supplement the secondary frequency control for the ESA, therefore the system frequency response and recovery can be improved. Within the ESA, a finite-time leader-follower consensus algorithm is proposed to control the small-scale ESSs via sparse communication networks. This algorithm ensures that the ESA tracks the frequency control signals, while the state-of-charge among each ESS is balanced in finite-time. The external characteristics of the ESA will resemble to that of one large-scale ESS. Numerical examples demonstrate the convergence of the ESA under different communication graphs. The effectiveness of the entire scheme for power system frequency control is validated under a variety of scenarios that include contingency and normal operation. Novel Carbon Nanotube-Polymer Hybrids were synthesized as potential materials for the development of membranes for water treatment applications in the field of Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs). Due to the toxicological concerns regarding the use of nanomaterials in water treatment as well as the rising demand for safe drinking water to protect public health, we studied the functionalization of MWCNTs and Thin-MWCNTs as to control their properties and increase their ability of embedment into porous anisotropic polymeric membranes. Following the growth of the hydrophilic monomer on the surface of the properly functionalized CNTs, that act as initiator for the controlled radical polymerization (ATRP) of sodium styrene sulfonate (SSNa), the antimicrobial quaternized phosphonium and ammonium salts were attached on CNTs-g-PSSNa through non-covalent bonding. In another approach the covalent attachment of quaternized ammonium polymeric moieties of acrylic acid-vinyl benzyl chloride copolymers with N,N-dimethylhexadecylamine (P(AA12-co-VBCHAM)) on functionalized CNTs has also been attempted. Finally, the toxicological assessment in terms of cell viability and cell morphological changes revealed that surface characteristics play a major role in the biological response of functionalized CNTs.

AbstractThe outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5Nx viruses in winter 2016/2017 was the most severe HPAI epizootic ever reported in Germany. The H5N8 and H5N5 viruses detected in birds in Germany in 2016/2017 represent a reassortant swarm of at least five distinct genotypes, which carried closely related HA segments derived from clade 2.3.4.4b. The genotypes of these viruses and their spatio-temporal distribution indicated a unique situation with multiple independent entries of HPAIV into Germany.

AbstractSolutes in rivers often come from multiple sources, notably precipitation (above) and generation from the subsurface (below). The question of which source is more influential in shaping the dynamics of solute concentration cannot be easily addressed due to the general lack of input data. An analysis of solute concentrations and their dependence on discharge across 585 catchments in nine countries leads us to hypothesize that both the timing and the vertical distribution of the solute generation are important drivers of solute export dynamics at the catchment scale. We test this hypothesis running synthetic experiments with a tracer‐aided distributed hydrological model. The results reveal that the depth of solute generation is the most important control of the concentration‐discharge (C‐Q) relation for a number of solutes. Such relation shows that C‐Q patterns of solute export vary from dilution (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, and Cl−) to weakly enriching (dissolved organic carbon). The timing of the input imposes a signature on temporal dynamics, most evident for nutrients, and adds uncertainty in the exponent of the C‐Q relation.

Extensive development and construction in marine and coastal systems is driving a phenomenon known as “ocean sprawl”. Ocean sprawl removes or transforms marine habitats through the addition of artificial structures and some of the most significant impacts are occurring in sedimentary environments. Marine sediments have substantial social, ecological, and economic value, as they are rich in biodiversity, crucial to fisheries productivity, and major sites of nutrient transformation. Yet the impact of ocean sprawl on sedimentary environments has largely been ignored. Here we review current knowledge of the impacts to sedimentary ecosystems arising from artificial structures.\ud \ud Artificial structures alter the composition and abundance of a wide variety of sediment-dependent taxa, including microbes, invertebrates, and benthic-feeding fishes. The effects vary by structure design and configuration, as well as the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the environment in which structures are placed. The mechanisms driving effects from artificial structures include placement loss, habitat degradation, modification of sound and light conditions, hydrodynamic changes, organic enrichment and material fluxes, contamination, and altered biotic interactions. Most studies have inferred mechanism based on descriptive work, comparing biological and physical processes at various distances from structures. Further experimental studies are needed to identify the relative importance of multiple mechanisms and to demonstrate causal relationships. Additionally, past studies have focused on impacts at a relatively small scale, and independently of other development that is occurring. There is need to quantify large-scale and cumulative effects on sedimentary ecosystems as artificial structures proliferate. We highlight the importance for comprehensive monitoring using robust survey designs and outline research strategies needed to understand, value, and protect marine sedimentary ecosystems in the face of a rapidly changing environment.

Long-term measurements of molecular oxygen (O2) dynamics inwetlands are highly relevant for understanding the eff ects of waterlevel changes on net greenhouse gas budgets in these ecosystems. However, such measurements have been limited due to a lack ofsuitable measuring equipment. We constructed an O2 optode sensorarray for long-term in situ measurements in soil and sediment. Th enew device consists of a 1.3-m-long, cylindrical, spear-shaped rodequipped with 10 sensor spots along the shaft . Each spot containsa thermocouple fi xed with a robust fi beroptic O2 optode madeby immobilizing a layer of Pt(II) meso-tetra(pentafl uorophenyl)porphine in polystyrene at the end of a 2-mm polymethylmethacrylate plastic fi ber. Temperature and O2 optode readings arecollected continuously by a data logger and a multichannel fi beropticO2 meter. Th e construction and measuring characteristics of thesensor array system are presented along with a novel approach fortemperature compensation of O2 optodes. During in situ applicationover several months in a peat bog, we used the new device todocument pronounced variations in O2 distribution aft er markedshift s in water level. Th e measurements showed anoxic conditionsbelow the water level but also diel variations in O2 concentrationsin the upper layer presumably due to rhizospheric oxidation by themain vegetation Phalaris arundinacea. Th e new fi eld instrumentthus enables new and more detailed insights to the in situ O2dynamics in wetlands.

Individual response to dietary interventions can be highly variable. The phenotypic characteristics of those who will respond positively to personalised dietary advice are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to compare the phenotypic profiles of differential responders to personalised dietary intervention, with a focus on total circulating cholesterol. Subjects from the Food4Me multi-centre study were classified as responders or non-responders to dietary advice based on the change in cholesterol level from baseline to month 6, with lower and upper quartiles defined as the responder and non-responder groups, respectively. There were no significant differences between the demographic and anthropometric profiles of the groups. Furthermore, with the exception of alcohol, there was no significant difference in reported dietary intake, at baseline. However, there were marked differences in baseline fatty acid profiles. The responder group had significantly higher levels of stearic acid (18:0, p=0.034) and lower levels of palmitic acid (16:0, p=0.009). Total monounsaturated fatty acids (p=0.016) and total polyunsaturated fatty acids (p=0.008) also differed between the groups. In a stepwise logistic regression model, age, baseline total cholesterol, glucose, five fatty acids and alcohol intake were selected as factors that successfully discriminated responders from non-responders, with sensitivity of 82% and specificity of 83%. The successful delivery of personalised dietary advice may depend on our ability to identify phenotypes that are responsive. The results demonstrate the potential use of metabolic profiles in identifying response to an intervention and could play an important role in the development of precision nutrition. Concerns regarding noxious emissions from internal combustion engines have increased over the years. There is a strong need to understand the nature of sub-23 nm particles and to develop measurement techniques to evaluate the feasibility of new regulations for particle number emissions in the sub-23 nm region (down to at least 10 nm). This paper presents the results of three EU-funded projects (DownToTen, PEMs4Nano and SUREAL-23) which supported the understanding, measurement and regulation of particle emissions below 23 nm and have successfully developed sub-23 nm particle measurement devices, specifically laboratory systems and mobile devices for RDE tests. The new technology was validated in chassis dyno tests and on the real road. The results show that sub-23 nm particles are mainly generated at the engine start and during acceleration phases. The innovations show that the technology is mature and robust enough to serve as a basis for regulating sub-23 nm particles. The DownToTen project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under agreement No 724085. The PEMs4Nano project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under agreement No 724145. The SUREAL-23 project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under agreement No 724136.

Objective To assess the effect of the FTO genotype on weight loss after dietary, physical activity, or drug based interventions in randomised controlled trials. Design Systematic review and random effects meta-analysis of individual participant data from randomised controlled trials. Data sources Ovid Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane from inception to November 2015. Eligibility criteria for study selection Randomised controlled trials in overweight or obese adults reporting reduction in body mass index, body weight, or waist circumference by FTO genotype (rs9939609 or a proxy) after dietary, physical activity, or drug based interventions. Gene by treatment interaction models were fitted to individual participant data from all studies included in this review, using allele dose coding for genetic effects and a common set of covariates. Study level interactions were combined using random effect models. Metaregression and subgroup analysis were used to assess sources of study heterogeneity. Results We identified eight eligible randomised controlled trials for the systematic review and meta-analysis (n=9563). Overall, differential changes in body mass index, body weight, and waist circumference in response to weight loss intervention were not significantly different between FTO genotypes. Sensitivity analyses indicated that differential changes in body mass index, body weight, and waist circumference by FTO genotype did not differ by intervention type, intervention length, ethnicity, sample size, sex, and baseline body mass index and age category. Conclusions We have observed that carriage of the FTO minor allele was not associated with differential change in adiposity after weight loss interventions. These findings show that individuals carrying the minor allele respond equally well to dietary, physical activity, or drug based weight loss interventions and thus genetic predisposition to obesity associated with the FTO minor allele can be at least partly counteracted through such interventions.

    Authors: Rickelt; L.F.; Aspaer; L.; +8 Authors
