description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2017Publisher:Elsevier BV Wei Zhang; Jinqiang Liang; Jing’an Lu; Jiangong Wei; Pibo Su; Yunxin Fang; Yiqun Guo; Shengxiong Yang; Guangxue Zhang;Abstract: Based on the comprehensive interpretation of cores, loggings and 2D/3D seismic data of Shenhu GMGS3 drilling area in the northern South China Sea, the distribution characteristics, differential accumulation mechanism and reservoir forming mechanism of diffusion type natural gas hydrate with high saturation discovered from clayey silt reservoirs were investigated. The following findings are reached through the research: (1) Gas hydrate with high saturation often displays high resistivity, low interval transit time, and strong bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs), and accompanies with fluid seepage phenomena beneath BSRs, such as mud diapiric structure and gas chimney. (2) The gas hydrate reservoirs are dominated by fine grained clayey silt sediments, and the reservoirs have higher porosity and permeability in local parts. (3) The gas hydrate is largely type I, whereas type II gas hydrate may exist below the type I gas hydrate. (4) The gas sources are mixed microbial and thermogenic gases, and the thermogenic gas originated from the deep formation in the center of Baiyun Sag migrated into shallow strata through faults, mud diapirs and gas chimneys, then was mixed with microbial gas in situ and continued to migrate until they accumulated in the temperature and pressure stability zone and formed diffusion type gas hydrate with high saturation finally. (5) The fluid migration system influenced and controlled the differential distribution of gas hydrate with high saturation. Due to the complex nature of land cover, however, mixed pixels exist widely in remote sensing images. Sub-pixel mapping (SPM) is a technique for predicting the spatial distribution of land cover classes within mixed pixels. As an ill-posed inverse problem, the uncertainty of prediction cannot be eliminated and hinders the production of accurate sub-pixel maps. In contrast to conventional methods that use continuous geospatial information (e.g., images) to enhance SPM, in this paper, a SPM method with point constraints into SPM is proposed. The method of fusing point constraints is implemented based on the pixel swapping algorithm (PSA) and utilizes the auxiliary point information to reduce the uncertainty in the SPM process and increase map accuracy. The point data are incorporated into both the initialization and optimization processes of PSA. Experiments were performed on three images to validate the proposed method. The influences of the performances were also investigated under different numbers of point data, different spatial characters of land cover and different zoom factors. The results show that by using the point data, the proposed SPM method can separate more small-sized targets from aggregated artifacts and the accuracies are increased obviously. The proposed method is also more accurate than the advanced radial basis function interpolation-based method. The advantage of using point data is more evident when the point data size and scale factor are large and the spatial autocorrelation of the land cover is small. As the amount of point data increases, however, the increase in accuracy becomes less noticeable. Furthermore, the SPM accuracy can still be increased even if the point data and coarse proportions contain errors. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

Global phases, viz. seismic phases that travel through the Earth?s core, can be used to locally image the crust by means of seismic interferometry. This method is known as Global Phase Seismic Interferometry (GloPSI). Traditionally, GloPSI retrieves low-frequency information (up to 1 Hz). Recent studies, however, suggest that there is high-frequency signal present in the coda of strong, distant earthquakes. This research quantifies the potential of these high-frequency signals, by analysing recordings of a multitude of high-magnitude earthquakes (≥6.4Mw) and their coda on a selection of permanent USArray stations. Nearly half of the P, PKP and PKIKP phases are recorded with a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 5 dB at 3 Hz. To assess the viability of using the high-frequency signal, the second half of the paper highlights two case studies. First, a known sedimentary structure is imaged in Malargue, Argentina. Secondly, the method is used to reveal the structure of the Midcontinent Rift below the SPREE array in Minnesota, USA. Both studies demonstrate that structural information of the shallow crust (≤5 km) below the arrays can be retrieved. In particular, the interpreted thickness of the sedimentary layer below the Malargue array is in agreement with earlier studies in the same area. Being able to use global phases and direct P-phases with large epicentral distances (>80°) to recover the Earth?s sedimentary structure suggests that GloPSI can be applied in an industrial context. The Hongshan complex, located in the southern part of the Taihang Mountains in the central part of the North China Craton, consists of syenite stocks (including fine-grained biotite aegirine syenite, medium-grained aegirine gabbro syenite, coarse-grained aegirine gabbro syenite, syenite pegmatite, and biotite syenite porphyry), with monzo-diorite and monzo-gabbro dikes. This paper presents zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotope data and whole-rock geochemical data from the Hongshan complex. LA–ICP-MS zircon U–Pb age from the fine-grained biotite aegirine syenite, monzo-diorite, and monzo-gabbro are 129.3 ± 2.0 Ma, 124.8 ± 1.3 Ma, and 124.1 ± 0.9 Ma, respectively, indicating their emplacement in the Early Cretaceous when the North China Craton was extensively reactivated. The monzo-diorite and monzo-gabbro have low SiO2 contents (48.94–57.75 wt%), total alkali contents (5.2–9.4 wt%), and εHf (t) values of −22.3 to −18.4 and are enriched in MgO (4.0–8.2 wt%), Al2O3 (14.3–15.8 wt%), light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs). Interpretation of elemental and isotopic data suggests that the magma of monzo-diorite and monzo-gabbro were derived from partial melting of the enriched lithospheric mantle metasomatized by slab-derived hydrous fluids. Syenites with high alkali (K2O + Na2O = 9.4–13.0 wt%) and Sr contents (356–1737 ppm) and low Yb contents (0.94–2.65 ppm) are enriched in Al (Al2O3 = 16.4–19.1 wt%), but depleted in MgO (0.09–2.56 w%), Cr (Avg = 7.16 ppm), Co (Avg = 6.85 ppm) and Ni (Avg = 9.79 ppm), showing the geochemical features of adakitic rocks associated with thickened lower crust. Combining zircon 176Hf/177Hf ratios of 0.282176 to 0.282359, εHf(t) values of −18.3 to −11.8 and εNd (t) values of −11.1 to −8.2, we conclude that the syenite magma was derived from the mixing of the thickened lower crust and the enriched lithospheric mantle magma. These magma processes were controlled by Paleo-Pacific plate subduction and resulted in the destruction and thinning of the central North China Craton.

Abstract Nowadays there is a great interest in producing energy through co-gasification of low grade coals and waste blends to increase the use of alternative feedstocks with low prices. The experimental results showed that the viability of co-gasification to process such blends and that by the right manipulation of coal and biomass or waste blends, syngas treatment and upgrading may be simplified and the cost of the overall process may be reduced. Blends of three different coal grades (sub-bituminous coal from Puertollano mines, South African bituminous coal and German brown coal) with two different types of biomass (pine and olive oil bagasse) or polyethylene (PE) were co-gasified. Blend co-gasification showed to be beneficial to reduce the negative characteristics of some coals, such as the high ash and sulphur contents, especially of Puertollano coal. Syngas obtained by these blends was hot cleaned and undesirable syngas components (tar, NH 3 and H 2 S) were measured along the hot treatment tested, which proved to be suitable to treat syngas produced by a wide range of feedstocks. Different routes for syngas cleaning were analysed to reduce unsuitable components to values required by most common end-uses. The results obtained showed that the type of feedstock to be gasified is a key outcome on initial syngas composition, affecting greatly syngas cleaning needs, its application and the economic viability of the overall process.

Although seismic design code has been enforced in the area since 1980, the fundamental knowledge on dynamic soil behavior has not been extensively attained. Approach: Collection of existing borehole information in the targeted areas to form a typical subsoil profile. This borehole information, together with analytical result obtained from logistic regression based on worldwide liquefaction database was used to conduct an effective stress analysis. Result: Literature reviews of the existing boreholes from the two largest provinces in the north, Chiang-Mai and Chiang-Rai, revealed that the areas were underlain by layers of loose to medium dense sand found at shallow depths. The corrected SPT N-value of those sand layers varies in the range of 5-20. A simple tool correlating the liquefaction probability, which correlated excess pore water pressure and peak ground acceleration, was proposed for the studied areas. Conclusion: The proposed correlation provided preliminary tool to evaluate risk of the shallow foundation from partial liquefaction in the two northern provinces of Thailand.

In the Surselva region, the main rock constituting the Tavetsch Zwischenmassif (TZM) is a polymetamorphic sericite schist, which is accompanied by subordinate muscovite-sericite gneiss. The entire tectonic unit is affected by a strong vertical schistosity, which parallels its NE-SW elongation. The main ore minerals in these gold occurrences are pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. The mineralisation occurs in millimetric stringers and veinlets, everywhere concordant with the schistosity. Native gold is present as small particles measuring 2–50 μm, and generally associated with pyrite. Average grades are variable, but approximate 4–7 g/t Au, with several occurrences attaining 14 g/t Au. Silver contents of the gold are on the order of 20 wt%. A “bonanza” occurrence consists of a quartz vein coated by 1.4 kg of native gold. The origin of the gold is unknown. On the assumption that the sericite schists are derived from original felsic volcanic tuffs, the gold-bearing sulphides may have been introduced during pre-Alpine magmatism.

New tomographic images of the upper mantle beneath the westernmost Mediterranean suggest that the evolution of the region experienced two subduction-related episodes. First subduction of oceanic and/or extended continental lithosphere, now located mainly beneath the Betics at depths greater than 400 km, took place on a NW-SE oriented subduction zone. This was followed by a slab-tear process that initiated in the east and propagated to the west, leading to westward slab rollback and possibly lower crustal delamination. The current position of the slab tear is located approximately at 4°W, and to the west of this location the subducted lithosphere is still attached to the surface along the Gibraltar Arc. Our new P-wave velocity model is able to image the attached subducted lithosphere as a narrow high-velocity body extending to shallow depths, coinciding with the region of maximum curvature of the Gibraltar Arc, the occurrence of intermediate-depth earthquakes, and anomalously thick crust. This thick crust has a large influence in the measured teleseismic travel time residuals and therefore in the obtained P-wave tomographic model. We show that removing the effects of the thick crust significantly improves the shallow images of the slab and therefore the interpretations based on the seismic structure This is a contribution of the Team Consolider-Ingenio 2010 TOPO-IBERIA (CSD2006-00041). The following findings are reached through the research: (1) Gas hydrate with high saturation often displays high resistivity, low interval transit time, and strong bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs), and accompanies with fluid seepage phenomena beneath BSRs, such as mud diapiric structure and gas chimney. (2) The gas hydrate reservoirs are dominated by fine grained clayey silt sediments, and the reservoirs have higher porosity and permeability in local parts. (3) The gas hydrate is largely type I, whereas type II gas hydrate may exist below the type I gas hydrate. (4) The gas sources are mixed microbial and thermogenic gases, and the thermogenic gas originated from the deep formation in the center of Baiyun Sag migrated into shallow strata through faults, mud diapirs and gas chimneys, then was mixed with microbial gas in situ and continued to migrate until they accumulated in the temperature and pressure stability zone and formed diffusion type gas hydrate with high saturation finally. (5) The fluid migration system influenced and controlled the differential distribution of gas hydrate with high saturation. Due to the complex nature of land cover, however, mixed pixels exist widely in remote sensing images. Sub-pixel mapping (SPM) is a technique for predicting the spatial distribution of land cover classes within mixed pixels. As an ill-posed inverse problem, the uncertainty of prediction cannot be eliminated and hinders the production of accurate sub-pixel maps. In contrast to conventional methods that use continuous geospatial information (e.g., images) to enhance SPM, in this paper, a SPM method with point constraints into SPM is proposed. The method of fusing point constraints is implemented based on the pixel swapping algorithm (PSA) and utilizes the auxiliary point information to reduce the uncertainty in the SPM process and increase map accuracy. The point data are incorporated into both the initialization and optimization processes of PSA. Experiments were performed on three images to validate the proposed method. The influences of the performances were also investigated under different numbers of point data, different spatial characters of land cover and different zoom factors. The results show that by using the point data, the proposed SPM method can separate more small-sized targets from aggregated artifacts and the accuracies are increased obviously. The proposed method is also more accurate than the advanced radial basis function interpolation-based method. The advantage of using point data is more evident when the point data size and scale factor are large and the spatial autocorrelation of the land cover is small. As the amount of point data increases, however, the increase in accuracy becomes less noticeable. Furthermore, the SPM accuracy can still be increased even if the point data and coarse proportions contain errors. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

Global phases, viz. seismic phases that travel through the Earth?s core, can be used to locally image the crust by means of seismic interferometry. This method is known as Global Phase Seismic Interferometry (GloPSI). Traditionally, GloPSI retrieves low-frequency information (up to 1 Hz). Recent studies, however, suggest that there is high-frequency signal present in the coda of strong, distant earthquakes. This research quantifies the potential of these high-frequency signals, by analysing recordings of a multitude of high-magnitude earthquakes (≥6.4Mw) and their coda on a selection of permanent USArray stations. Nearly half of the P, PKP and PKIKP phases are recorded with a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 5 dB at 3 Hz. To assess the viability of using the high-frequency signal, the second half of the paper highlights two case studies. First, a known sedimentary structure is imaged in Malargue, Argentina. Secondly, the method is used to reveal the structure of the Midcontinent Rift below the SPREE array in Minnesota, USA. Both studies demonstrate that structural information of the shallow crust (≤5 km) below the arrays can be retrieved. In particular, the interpreted thickness of the sedimentary layer below the Malargue array is in agreement with earlier studies in the same area. Being able to use global phases and direct P-phases with large epicentral distances (>80°) to recover the Earth?s sedimentary structure suggests that GloPSI can be applied in an industrial context. The Hongshan complex, located in the southern part of the Taihang Mountains in the central part of the North China Craton, consists of syenite stocks (including fine-grained biotite aegirine syenite, medium-grained aegirine gabbro syenite, coarse-grained aegirine gabbro syenite, syenite pegmatite, and biotite syenite porphyry), with monzo-diorite and monzo-gabbro dikes. This paper presents zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotope data and whole-rock geochemical data from the Hongshan complex. LA–ICP-MS zircon U–Pb age from the fine-grained biotite aegirine syenite, monzo-diorite, and monzo-gabbro are 129.3 ± 2.0 Ma, 124.8 ± 1.3 Ma, and 124.1 ± 0.9 Ma, respectively, indicating their emplacement in the Early Cretaceous when the North China Craton was extensively reactivated. The monzo-diorite and monzo-gabbro have low SiO2 contents (48.94–57.75 wt%), total alkali contents (5.2–9.4 wt%), and εHf (t) values of −22.3 to −18.4 and are enriched in MgO (4.0–8.2 wt%), Al2O3 (14.3–15.8 wt%), light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs). Interpretation of elemental and isotopic data suggests that the magma of monzo-diorite and monzo-gabbro were derived from partial melting of the enriched lithospheric mantle metasomatized by slab-derived hydrous fluids. Syenites with high alkali (K2O + Na2O = 9.4–13.0 wt%) and Sr contents (356–1737 ppm) and low Yb contents (0.94–2.65 ppm) are enriched in Al (Al2O3 = 16.4–19.1 wt%), but depleted in MgO (0.09–2.56 w%), Cr (Avg = 7.16 ppm), Co (Avg = 6.85 ppm) and Ni (Avg = 9.79 ppm), showing the geochemical features of adakitic rocks associated with thickened lower crust. Combining zircon 176Hf/177Hf ratios of 0.282176 to 0.282359, εHf(t) values of −18.3 to −11.8 and εNd (t) values of −11.1 to −8.2, we conclude that the syenite magma was derived from the mixing of the thickened lower crust and the enriched lithospheric mantle magma. These magma processes were controlled by Paleo-Pacific plate subduction and resulted in the destruction and thinning of the central North China Craton.

Abstract Nowadays there is a great interest in producing energy through co-gasification of low grade coals and waste blends to increase the use of alternative feedstocks with low prices. The experimental results showed that the viability of co-gasification to process such blends and that by the right manipulation of coal and biomass or waste blends, syngas treatment and upgrading may be simplified and the cost of the overall process may be reduced. Blends of three different coal grades (sub-bituminous coal from Puertollano mines, South African bituminous coal and German brown coal) with two different types of biomass (pine and olive oil bagasse) or polyethylene (PE) were co-gasified. Blend co-gasification showed to be beneficial to reduce the negative characteristics of some coals, such as the high ash and sulphur contents, especially of Puertollano coal. Syngas obtained by these blends was hot cleaned and undesirable syngas components (tar, NH 3 and H 2 S) were measured along the hot treatment tested, which proved to be suitable to treat syngas produced by a wide range of feedstocks. Different routes for syngas cleaning were analysed to reduce unsuitable components to values required by most common end-uses. The results obtained showed that the type of feedstock to be gasified is a key outcome on initial syngas composition, affecting greatly syngas cleaning needs, its application and the economic viability of the overall process.

Although seismic design code has been enforced in the area since 1980, the fundamental knowledge on dynamic soil behavior has not been extensively attained. Approach: Collection of existing borehole information in the targeted areas to form a typical subsoil profile. This borehole information, together with analytical result obtained from logistic regression based on worldwide liquefaction database was used to conduct an effective stress analysis. Result: Literature reviews of the existing boreholes from the two largest provinces in the north, Chiang-Mai and Chiang-Rai, revealed that the areas were underlain by layers of loose to medium dense sand found at shallow depths. The corrected SPT N-value of those sand layers varies in the range of 5-20. A simple tool correlating the liquefaction probability, which correlated excess pore water pressure and peak ground acceleration, was proposed for the studied areas. Conclusion: The proposed correlation provided preliminary tool to evaluate risk of the shallow foundation from partial liquefaction in the two northern provinces of Thailand.

In the Surselva region, the main rock constituting the Tavetsch Zwischenmassif (TZM) is a polymetamorphic sericite schist, which is accompanied by subordinate muscovite-sericite gneiss. The entire tectonic unit is affected by a strong vertical schistosity, which parallels its NE-SW elongation. The main ore minerals in these gold occurrences are pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. The mineralisation occurs in millimetric stringers and veinlets, everywhere concordant with the schistosity. Native gold is present as small particles measuring 2–50 μm, and generally associated with pyrite. Average grades are variable, but approximate 4–7 g/t Au, with several occurrences attaining 14 g/t Au. Silver contents of the gold are on the order of 20 wt%. A “bonanza” occurrence consists of a quartz vein coated by 1.4 kg of native gold. The origin of the gold is unknown. On the assumption that the sericite schists are derived from original felsic volcanic tuffs, the gold-bearing sulphides may have been introduced during pre-Alpine magmatism.

New tomographic images of the upper mantle beneath the westernmost Mediterranean suggest that the evolution of the region experienced two subduction-related episodes. First subduction of oceanic and/or extended continental lithosphere, now located mainly beneath the Betics at depths greater than 400 km, took place on a NW-SE oriented subduction zone. This was followed by a slab-tear process that initiated in the east and propagated to the west, leading to westward slab rollback and possibly lower crustal delamination. The current position of the slab tear is located approximately at 4°W, and to the west of this location the subducted lithosphere is still attached to the surface along the Gibraltar Arc. Our new P-wave velocity model is able to image the attached subducted lithosphere as a narrow high-velocity body extending to shallow depths, coinciding with the region of maximum curvature of the Gibraltar Arc, the occurrence of intermediate-depth earthquakes, and anomalously thick crust. This thick crust has a large influence in the measured teleseismic travel time residuals and therefore in the obtained P-wave tomographic model. We show that removing the effects of the thick crust significantly improves the shallow images of the slab and therefore the interpretations based on the seismic structure This is a contribution of the Team Consolider-Ingenio 2010 TOPO-IBERIA (CSD2006-00041).
