ABSTRACTWe developed a passive sampler for time-integrated collection and radiocarbon (14C) analysis of soil respiration, a major flux in the global C cycle. It consists of a permanent access well that controls the CO2uptake rate and an exchangeable molecular sieve CO2trap. We tested how access well dimensions and environmental conditions affect collected CO2, and optimized cleaning procedures to minimize14CO2memory. We also deployed two generations of the sampler in Arctic tundra for up to two years, collecting CO2over periods of 3 days–2 months, while monitoring soil temperature, volumetric water content, and CO2concentration. The sampler collects CO2at a rate proportional to the length of a silicone tubing inlet (7–26 µg CO2-C day-1·m Si-1). With constant sampler dimensions in the field, CO2recovery is best explained by soil temperature. We retrieved 0.1–5.3 mg C from the 1st and 0.6–13 mg C from the 2nd generation samplers, equivalent to uptake rates of 2–215 (n=17) and 10–247 µg CO2-C day-1(n=20), respectively. The method blank is 8 ± 6 µg C (mean ± sd,n=8), with a radiocarbon content (fraction modern) ranging from 0.5875–0.6013 (n=2). The sampler enables more continuous investigations of soil C emission sources and is suitable for Arctic environments.

Some fire-damaged and undamaged original Medieval mortars from the same site have also been tested. The mortars were heated at different temperatures and then analyzed using the same preparation procedures as in 14C dating of mortars to see what kind of changes the heating would introduce to the mineralogy, chemistry, and the carbon and oxygen isotope ratios. We found that decarbonation during heating starts at ∼600 ° and recarbonation starts as soon as the temperature drops. Already after a few days, most of the lost CO2 has been replaced with atmospheric CO2. The renewed carbonates are readily soluble in the acid hydrolysis process and their carbon and oxygen isotopes have a light signature. Fire-damaged historical mortars display the same features. If a long time has elapsed between hardening of the original mortar and the fire, the new carbonates have 14C concentrations that point to the fire event rather than to the building event. In several cases, the fire-damaged mortars have an easily soluble carbonate fraction with a 14C age that could be related to a major fire event, but still most of the soluble carbonate yields a 14C age that seems like a reasonable age for the original construction.

Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) for $^{14}$C analysis of groundwater is usually extracted by a gas-strip or precipitation method. In this study, the certainty of the two methods for $^{14}$C dating were confirmed. DIC and $^{14}$C concentrations obtained by the gas-strip method were close to the theoretically predicted $^{14}$C value. Conversely, the $^{14}$C value obtained by the precipitation method always showed higher values than the predicted values. The difference in $^{14}$C value between gas-strip and precipitation methods was assumed to arise owing to contamination of modern carbon used in the precipitation method. The applicability of the precipitation method for groundwater should be considered carefully according to the DIC, $^{14}$C concentration of groundwater and purpose of the study being conducted.

J. Timothy Jull; Tünde Törcsik; One of Hungary's geological and environmental treasures is nestled in the heart of the Great Hungarian Plain. The catchment basin of Lake Kolon was subjected to detailed environmental historical studies starting in 2005. Undisturbed cores taken along transects of the basin were subjected to detailed sedimentological, paleoecological, and geochemical studies. To establish a reliable timeframe of the lacustrine and marshland sedimentary sequence identified, 22 samples were analyzed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) in the radiocarbon laboratories of Poznań and Tucson. With the new results in hand, we had the opportunity to elucidate the geological evolution of the area for the past 25,000 yr. This sequence is highly beneficial, as it is probably the most well-dated profile of the Quaternary from the area studied. The new absolute dates enabled the comparison of local geological evolution of the studied area with those of global climatic changes. As seen from our findings, the geological evolution of the catchment basin was congruent with major climatic events during the Pleistocene and the entire Holocene. However, a very peculiar trajectory was identified for the terminal part of the Pleistocene and the opening of the Holocene regarding the evolution of the landscape, the vegetation, and the fauna of this part of the Great Hungarian Plain.

Prosser; Edward Dlugokencky; R. J. Sparks; G. Wallace; John Chappell; The dating of alluvial deposits is frequently hampered by a lack of good-quality charcoal or other material for radiocarbon samples. We have dated two sites in southeastern Australia using traditional radiometric methods with minimal pretreatment. Results yielded an inconsistent chronology, affected by contamination with younger humic materials. A more consistent and older chronology was achieved using AMS dating of rigorously pretreated samples of fine-grained charcoal. The results have important implications for the radiocarbon dating of many Late Quaternary stratigraphic sequences with low charcoal abundance.

These trees lived between the Allerød and Subboreal periods, according to 14C dates. Our dendochronological studies explain the trees' sudden death as due to morphological crisis brought on by climatic oscillations. Tree-ring series could be used to identify the variability of early Holocene atmospheric 14C levels.

Rosique; Jean-Louis Edouard; M. Jorda; The purpose of this paper is to analyze the numerous holocene subfossil trees (Pinus silvestris) buried in alluvial deposits in the Southern French Alps.
