    Die Temperaturen Mitteleuropas, die im älteren Tertiär um etwa 20° C liegen, sinken im Laufe des Tertiärs ganz allmählich, um mit Beginn des Eiszeitalters denen der Gegenwart nahezukommen. Das Quartär ist durch kurze starke Schwankungen gekennzeichnet. Als Ursache kommen wohl zwei Hauptfaktoren in Frage: Zunahme des Reliefs der Erde und Schwankungen der Sonnenenergie (im ultravioletten Spektralbereich).     Abstract. Recent advancements and the widespread availability of low-cost microcontrollers and electronic components have created new opportunities for developing and using low-cost, open-source instrumentation for near-surface geophysical investigations. Geophysical methods that do not require ground contact, such as frequency-domain electromagnetics, allow one or two users to quickly acquire significant amounts of ground resistivity data in a cost-effective manner. The Colorado School of Mines electromagnetic system (CSM-EM) is a proof-of-concept instrument capable of sensing conductive objects in near-surface environments, and is similar in concept to commercial-grade equipment while costing under USD 400 to build. We tested the functionality of the CSM-EM system in a controlled laboratory setting during the design phase and validated it over a conductive target in an outdoor environment. The transmitter antenna can generate a current of over 2.5 A, and emit signals that are detectable by a receiver antenna at offsets of up to 25 m. The system requires minor refitting to change the functioning frequency, and has been operationally validated at 0.4 and 1.6 kHz. The receiver signal can be measured by off-the-shelf digital multimeters. Future directions will focus on improving the electronic and mechanical stability of the CSM-EM with the goal of using acquired data to make quantitative measurements of subsurface resistivity.

    Im nordtunesischen Untersuchungsgebiet (östliches Kroumirbergland) lassen sich verschiedene Ablagerungen voneinander trennen. Am jüngsten ist eine Feinmaterialakkumulation, die eine maximale Höhe von 5—6 m über Niedrigwasserbett und ein Erosionsniveau bei 2—2,5 m aufweist. Diese Akkumulation entspricht den Feinsedimentkörpern („Auelehme") Fregiens (1971). Nach zwei 14C-Daten (Holzkohle) wurden die Sedimente etwa seit 5000 B. P. abgelagert. Ungefähr in den gleichen Zeitraum fällt nach 14C-Daten die Ablagerung einer 6—12 m mächtigen „Dünensandterrasse" im Oued Malah. Die nächst ältere Ablagerung besteht aus einem Schotterkörper, der vor allem im Talgrund unter den oben genannten Akkumulationen anzutreffen ist. Nach Vergleichen mit Untersuchungsergebnissen in Zentraltunesien scheint ein würmzeitliches Alter der Schotter wahrscheinlich zu sein. Zeitlich nicht einstufen ließen sich kalkzementierte Dünen mit Terra rossa-Schlotten in Meeresnähe bei 12,5—13,5 m ü. M., eine oder mehrere Schotterterrassen mit Felssockeln bei 25—50 m über Niedrigwasserbett und kalkzementierte Dünen mit roten Bodensedimenten und einzelnen Sandsteinschottern bei 70—90 m, stellenweise sogar bei 130 m relativer Höhe über Niedrigwasserbett. research

    Der weichselkaltzeitliche Binnensander-Bereich Bargfeld-Stegen (Schleswig-Holstein) nördlich von Hamburg ist durch intensive periglaziäre Überprägung charakterisiert. Hierbei treten rinnenartige Hohlformen (Rinnen), von bis zu 26 m Breite und 3,5 m Tiefe in den Vordergrund. Häufige Gemeinsamkeiten dieser Rinnen sind ein flach-konvexes Rinnenprofil, flache Basisflächen bzw. ein Einschneiden der Rinne bis zu einer Grenzfläche (ehem. Permafrostfläche), eine bindige Füllung mit aufgearbeitetem oder umgelagerten Till, ein diapir-artiges Aufdringen von Teilen der Rinnenfüllung im oberen Bereich und im Randbereich, Unterschneidungen und andere fluviatile Kennzeichen an den Rinnenflanken sowie homogen mit Sand gefüllte Sekundär-Rinnen im zentralen oberen Teil der Strukturen. Sie sind bevorzugt an Hängen im Winkel zur Haupt-Eisvorstossrichtung sowie im Randbereich der vorhandenen Deck-Till-Verbreitung vorhanden. Es kommen verschiedene Entstehungsmöglichkeiten in Betracht. Die Strukturen dürften maßgeblich während der jüngeren Weichsel-Kaltzeit unter Frostbodenklima durch die Wirkung periglaziär-fluviatiler Prozesse (Abluation) in Verbindung mit Solifluktionsprozessen, gebildet worden sein. research

    A large, broadly elliptical coccolith of the genus Similiscutum (Biscutaceae) was observed in sediments dated from the Lower Jurassic (upper Pliensbachian to Toarcian) coming from different localities of western Tethys, namely Portugal (Lusitanian Basin), France (Causses and Paris basins) and Spain (Subbetic area). This form is quite easy to find in the Toarcian GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point) of Peniche (Portugal), where the holotype has been described. More than 100 specimens of Similiscutum were digitally captured using a CCD camera, including this large form and two other related species, Similiscutum finchii and Similiscutum novum. The length and width of the coccoliths and the length and width of their central area were measured, and biometric analyses were performed. Results show that this large morphotype of Similiscutum is well characterized and easily differentiable by its size and morphology from the species S. finchii and S. novum, which are characterized by a similar extinction pattern in optical-microscope crossed polars . On the basis of combined differences in size and in central-area shape and structure, Similiscutum giganteum sp. nov. is introduced here.     Abstract. A physics suite under development at NOAA's Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) includes the aerosol-aware double-moment Thompson–Eidhammer microphysics (TH-E MP) scheme. This microphysics scheme uses two aerosol variables (concentrations of water-friendly aerosol (WFA) and ice-friendly aerosol (IFA) numbers) to include interactions with some of the physical processes. In the original implementation, WFA and IFA depended on emissions derived from climatologies. In our approach, using the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP), we embedded modules of sea-salt emissions, dust emissions, and biomass-burning emissions, as well as of anthropogenic aerosol emissions, into the Unified Forecast System (UFS) to provide realistic aerosol emissions for these two variables. This represents a very simple approach with no additional tracer variables and therefore very limited additional computing cost. We then evaluated a comparison of simulations using the original TH-E MP approach, which derives the two aerosol variables using empirical emission formulas from climatologies (CTL) and simulations that use the online emissions (EXP). Aerosol optical depth (AOD) was derived from the two variables and appears quite realistic in the runs with online emissions when compared to analyzed fields. We found less resolved precipitation over Europe and North America from the EXP run, which represents an improvement compared to observations. Also interesting are moderately increased aerosol concentrations over the Southern Ocean from the EXP run, which invigorate the development of cloud water and enhance the resolved precipitation in those areas. This study shows that a more realistic representation of aerosol emissions may be useful when using double-moment microphysics schemes.

    Commercially available anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) magnetometers exhibit on the order of 1 nanotesla (nT) sensitivity in small size, weight, and power (SWaP) packages. However, AMR magnetometer accuracy is diminished by properties such as static offsets, gain uncertainty, off-axis coupling, and temperature effects. This work presents a measurement of the magnitude of these effects for a Honeywell HMC1053 magnetometer and evaluates a method for calibrating the observed effects by multivariate non-linear regression using a 24-parameter measurement equation. The presented calibration method has reduced the vector norm of the root mean square error from 4300 to 72 nT for the data acquired in this experiment. This calibration method has been developed for use on the AERO (Auroral Emissions Radio Observer) and VISTA (Vector Interferometry Space Technology using AERO) CubeSat missions, but the methods and results may be applicable to other resource-constrained magnetometers whose accuracies are limited by the offset, gain, off-axis, and thermal effects that are similar to the HMC1053 AMR magnetometer.

    We introduce a set of methods for analyzing cosmogenic-nuclide depth profiles that formally integrates denudation and muogenic production, while retaining the advantages of linear inversion for surfaces with inheritance and age much greater than zero. For surfaces with denudation, we present solutions for both denudation rate and total denudation depth, each with their own advantages. By combining linear inversion with Monte Carlo simulation of error propagation, our method jointly assesses uncertainty arising from measurement error and denudation constraints. Using simulated depth profiles and natural-example depth profile data sets from the Beida River, northwest China, and Lees Ferry, Arizona, we show that our methods robustly produce accurate age and inheritance estimations for surfaces under varying circumstances. For surfaces with very low inheritance or age, it is important to apply a constrained inversion to obtain the correct result distributions. The denudation-depth approach can theoretically produce reasonably accurate age estimates even when total denudation reaches 5 times the nucleon attenuation length. The denudation-rate approach, on the other hand, has the advantage of allowing direct exploration of trade-offs between exposure age and denudation rate. Out of all the factors, lack of precise constraints for denudation rate or depth tends to be the largest contributor of age uncertainty, while negligible error results from our approximation of muogenic production using the denudation-depth approach.     Abstract. Recent advancements and the widespread availability of low-cost microcontrollers and electronic components have created new opportunities for developing and using low-cost, open-source instrumentation for near-surface geophysical investigations. Geophysical methods that do not require ground contact, such as frequency-domain electromagnetics, allow one or two users to quickly acquire significant amounts of ground resistivity data in a cost-effective manner. The Colorado School of Mines electromagnetic system (CSM-EM) is a proof-of-concept instrument capable of sensing conductive objects in near-surface environments, and is similar in concept to commercial-grade equipment while costing under USD 400 to build. We tested the functionality of the CSM-EM system in a controlled laboratory setting during the design phase and validated it over a conductive target in an outdoor environment. The transmitter antenna can generate a current of over 2.5 A, and emit signals that are detectable by a receiver antenna at offsets of up to 25 m. The system requires minor refitting to change the functioning frequency, and has been operationally validated at 0.4 and 1.6 kHz. The receiver signal can be measured by off-the-shelf digital multimeters. Future directions will focus on improving the electronic and mechanical stability of the CSM-EM with the goal of using acquired data to make quantitative measurements of subsurface resistivity.

    Im nordtunesischen Untersuchungsgebiet (östliches Kroumirbergland) lassen sich verschiedene Ablagerungen voneinander trennen. Am jüngsten ist eine Feinmaterialakkumulation, die eine maximale Höhe von 5—6 m über Niedrigwasserbett und ein Erosionsniveau bei 2—2,5 m aufweist. Diese Akkumulation entspricht den Feinsedimentkörpern („Auelehme") Fregiens (1971). Nach zwei 14C-Daten (Holzkohle) wurden die Sedimente etwa seit 5000 B. P. abgelagert. Ungefähr in den gleichen Zeitraum fällt nach 14C-Daten die Ablagerung einer 6—12 m mächtigen „Dünensandterrasse" im Oued Malah. Die nächst ältere Ablagerung besteht aus einem Schotterkörper, der vor allem im Talgrund unter den oben genannten Akkumulationen anzutreffen ist. Nach Vergleichen mit Untersuchungsergebnissen in Zentraltunesien scheint ein würmzeitliches Alter der Schotter wahrscheinlich zu sein. Zeitlich nicht einstufen ließen sich kalkzementierte Dünen mit Terra rossa-Schlotten in Meeresnähe bei 12,5—13,5 m ü. M., eine oder mehrere Schotterterrassen mit Felssockeln bei 25—50 m über Niedrigwasserbett und kalkzementierte Dünen mit roten Bodensedimenten und einzelnen Sandsteinschottern bei 70—90 m, stellenweise sogar bei 130 m relativer Höhe über Niedrigwasserbett. research

    Der weichselkaltzeitliche Binnensander-Bereich Bargfeld-Stegen (Schleswig-Holstein) nördlich von Hamburg ist durch intensive periglaziäre Überprägung charakterisiert. Hierbei treten rinnenartige Hohlformen (Rinnen), von bis zu 26 m Breite und 3,5 m Tiefe in den Vordergrund. Häufige Gemeinsamkeiten dieser Rinnen sind ein flach-konvexes Rinnenprofil, flache Basisflächen bzw. ein Einschneiden der Rinne bis zu einer Grenzfläche (ehem. Permafrostfläche), eine bindige Füllung mit aufgearbeitetem oder umgelagerten Till, ein diapir-artiges Aufdringen von Teilen der Rinnenfüllung im oberen Bereich und im Randbereich, Unterschneidungen und andere fluviatile Kennzeichen an den Rinnenflanken sowie homogen mit Sand gefüllte Sekundär-Rinnen im zentralen oberen Teil der Strukturen. Sie sind bevorzugt an Hängen im Winkel zur Haupt-Eisvorstossrichtung sowie im Randbereich der vorhandenen Deck-Till-Verbreitung vorhanden. Es kommen verschiedene Entstehungsmöglichkeiten in Betracht. Die Strukturen dürften maßgeblich während der jüngeren Weichsel-Kaltzeit unter Frostbodenklima durch die Wirkung periglaziär-fluviatiler Prozesse (Abluation) in Verbindung mit Solifluktionsprozessen, gebildet worden sein. research

    A large, broadly elliptical coccolith of the genus Similiscutum (Biscutaceae) was observed in sediments dated from the Lower Jurassic (upper Pliensbachian to Toarcian) coming from different localities of western Tethys, namely Portugal (Lusitanian Basin), France (Causses and Paris basins) and Spain (Subbetic area). This form is quite easy to find in the Toarcian GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point) of Peniche (Portugal), where the holotype has been described. More than 100 specimens of Similiscutum were digitally captured using a CCD camera, including this large form and two other related species, Similiscutum finchii and Similiscutum novum. The length and width of the coccoliths and the length and width of their central area were measured, and biometric analyses were performed. Results show that this large morphotype of Similiscutum is well characterized and easily differentiable by its size and morphology from the species S. finchii and S. novum, which are characterized by a similar extinction pattern in optical-microscope crossed polars . On the basis of combined differences in size and in central-area shape and structure, Similiscutum giganteum sp. nov. is introduced here.     Abstract. A physics suite under development at NOAA's Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) includes the aerosol-aware double-moment Thompson–Eidhammer microphysics (TH-E MP) scheme. This microphysics scheme uses two aerosol variables (concentrations of water-friendly aerosol (WFA) and ice-friendly aerosol (IFA) numbers) to include interactions with some of the physical processes. In the original implementation, WFA and IFA depended on emissions derived from climatologies. In our approach, using the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP), we embedded modules of sea-salt emissions, dust emissions, and biomass-burning emissions, as well as of anthropogenic aerosol emissions, into the Unified Forecast System (UFS) to provide realistic aerosol emissions for these two variables. This represents a very simple approach with no additional tracer variables and therefore very limited additional computing cost. We then evaluated a comparison of simulations using the original TH-E MP approach, which derives the two aerosol variables using empirical emission formulas from climatologies (CTL) and simulations that use the online emissions (EXP). Aerosol optical depth (AOD) was derived from the two variables and appears quite realistic in the runs with online emissions when compared to analyzed fields. We found less resolved precipitation over Europe and North America from the EXP run, which represents an improvement compared to observations. Also interesting are moderately increased aerosol concentrations over the Southern Ocean from the EXP run, which invigorate the development of cloud water and enhance the resolved precipitation in those areas. This study shows that a more realistic representation of aerosol emissions may be useful when using double-moment microphysics schemes.

    Commercially available anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) magnetometers exhibit on the order of 1 nanotesla (nT) sensitivity in small size, weight, and power (SWaP) packages. However, AMR magnetometer accuracy is diminished by properties such as static offsets, gain uncertainty, off-axis coupling, and temperature effects. This work presents a measurement of the magnitude of these effects for a Honeywell HMC1053 magnetometer and evaluates a method for calibrating the observed effects by multivariate non-linear regression using a 24-parameter measurement equation. The presented calibration method has reduced the vector norm of the root mean square error from 4300 to 72 nT for the data acquired in this experiment. This calibration method has been developed for use on the AERO (Auroral Emissions Radio Observer) and VISTA (Vector Interferometry Space Technology using AERO) CubeSat missions, but the methods and results may be applicable to other resource-constrained magnetometers whose accuracies are limited by the offset, gain, off-axis, and thermal effects that are similar to the HMC1053 AMR magnetometer.

    We introduce a set of methods for analyzing cosmogenic-nuclide depth profiles that formally integrates denudation and muogenic production, while retaining the advantages of linear inversion for surfaces with inheritance and age much greater than zero. For surfaces with denudation, we present solutions for both denudation rate and total denudation depth, each with their own advantages. By combining linear inversion with Monte Carlo simulation of error propagation, our method jointly assesses uncertainty arising from measurement error and denudation constraints. Using simulated depth profiles and natural-example depth profile data sets from the Beida River, northwest China, and Lees Ferry, Arizona, we show that our methods robustly produce accurate age and inheritance estimations for surfaces under varying circumstances. For surfaces with very low inheritance or age, it is important to apply a constrained inversion to obtain the correct result distributions. The denudation-depth approach can theoretically produce reasonably accurate age estimates even when total denudation reaches 5 times the nucleon attenuation length. The denudation-rate approach, on the other hand, has the advantage of allowing direct exploration of trade-offs between exposure age and denudation rate. Out of all the factors, lack of precise constraints for denudation rate or depth tends to be the largest contributor of age uncertainty, while negligible error results from our approximation of muogenic production using the denudation-depth approach.
