    The literature review presented in this paper centres on the external factors that influence PV output performance in the Irish climate. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels show long-term performance degradation, resulting in lower like-per-like efficiencies and performance ratios. Manufacturers of solar photovoltaic modules typically guarantee a life span of more than 20 years. But to meet such guarantees, it is necessary to track and mitigate PV module degradation during this period, and identify maintenance and repair requirements beyond this period. Solar PV modules degrade over time, becoming less efficient, less reliable, and, eventually, inoperable. External factors such as solar irradiance, dust deposition, shading, ambient temperature, operating cell temperature, humidity and wind velocity affect the PV output performance in the Irish climate. This is because the performance of a PV system is heavily influenced by the meteorological conditions of the site locations. Therefore, this paper reviews the external factors that influence PV output performance in the Irish climate.

    Nano-structuring of metals is one of the greatest challenges for the future of plasmonic and photonic devices. Such a technology calls for the development of ultra-fast, high-throughput and low cost fabrication techniques. Laser processing accounts for the aforementioned properties, representing an unrivalled tool towards the anticipated arrival of modules based in metallic nano-structures, with an extra advantage: the ease of scalability. Specifically, laser nano-structuring of an ultra-thin metal film or an alternating metal film on a substrate/metal film on a substrate results respectively on surface (metallic nanoparticles on the surface of the substrate) or subsurface (metallic nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric matrix) plasmonic patterns with many applications. In this work we investigate theoretically the photo-thermal processes involved in surface and sub-surface plasmonic nano-structuring and compare to experiments. To this end, we present a design process and develop functional\ud plasmonic nano-structures with pre-determined morphology by tuning the annealing parameters like the laser fluence and wavelength and/or the structure parameters like the thickness of the metallic film and the volume ratio of the metal film on a substrate-metal composite. For the surface plasmonic nano-structuring we utilize the ability to tune the laser's wavelength to either match the absorption spectral profile of the metal or to be\ud resonant with the plasma oscillation frequency, i.e. we utilize different optical absorption mechanisms that are\ud size-selective. Thus, we overcome a great challenge of laser induced self assembly by combining simultaneously\ud large-scale character with nanometer scale precision. For subsurface plasmonic nano-structuring, on the other hand, we utilize the temperature gradients that are developed spatially across the metal/dielectric nano-composite\ud structure during the laser treatment. We find that the developed temperature gradients are strongly depended on the nanocrystalline character of the dielectric host which determines its thermal conductivity, the composition of the ceramic/metal and the total thickness of the nano-composite film. The aforementioned material parameters combined with the laser annealing parameters can be used to pre-design the final morphology of the sub-surface plasmonic structure. The proposed processes can serve as a platform that will stimulate further progress towards the engineering of plasmonic devices.

    Metamaterials is a large family of microwave structures that produces interesting ε and μ conditions with huge implications for numerous electromagnetic applications. Following a description of modern techniques to realize epsilon-negative, mu-negative and double-negative metamaterials, this paper explores recent literature on the use of metamaterials in hot research areas such as metamaterial-inspired microwave components, antenna applications and imaging. This contribution is meant to provide an updated overview of complex microwave engineering for the generation of different types of metamaterials and their application in topical electromagnetic scenarios.

    Both the outcomes of technical and economical feasibility analysis of a renewable based power system should be positive to achieve sustainability. Energy production or Renewable Energy Feed-in-Tariff (REFIT) cost should be lower or higher respectively than the existing grid electricity cost. As the renewable energy sources are variable and where REFIT is also applicable for the system connected to the grid, the detailed hourly time series analysis is very important. Based on this issue, in this paper, a techno-economic feasibility analysis has been performed for a PV based micro-generation system to find out the possible ways to make the micro-generation (μGen) system sustainable in low irradiation region. As a case study, the city of Dublin, Ireland has been chosen for the detailed analysis. Analysis shows how the technological improvement can help to popularize the μGen system in Ireland. The procedure can be followed by other countries as well.

    Power systems have evolved as countries implement energy policies focusing on energy efficiency and increased share of renewable energy sources (RES). At the forefront is non-dispatchable generation such as wind and solar. Traditionally power systems were designed for fully dispatchable generating plant. However, these powers systems are under additional pressure due to the variable operational characteristics of RES. Consequently, capital investments in grid reinforcement, interconnection, additional gas generators and smart grid initiatives have been proposed and implemented. Moreover, an increased interest in energy storage technologies has evolved due to their various economic and operational benefits to power systems. Current compressed air energy storage (CAES) plants have shown economic feasibility and reliability. Thus, the main focus of this paper is to investigate and compare two scenarios; one without CAES and a second with CAES as an additional generator in the 2020 Irish power system using power systems simulation software PLEXOS.

    The use of mobile computing devices has become more and more common as such devices have become more and more affordable and powerful. With increases in throughput speed and decreases in device size, wireless multimedia streaming to battery powered mobile devices has become widespread. However, the battery power has not kept up with the advances in technology and has not increased so rapidly. This deficiency in battery power provides motivation for development of more energy efficient multimedia streaming methods and procedures. As such, an adaptive delivery mechanism is proposed to take into account the various drains on battery life and adjust rates appropriately when the battery is low. This paper proposes a Power Save-based Adaptive Multimedia Delivery Mechanism (PS-AMy) which makes a seamless multimedia adaptation based on the current energy level and packet loss, in order to enable the multimedia streaming to last longer while maintaining acceptable user-perceived quality levels. The proposed mechanism is evaluated by simulation using Network Simulator (NS-2).

    It was recently reported that more efficient triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-like devices can be prepared using inversely polarized ferroelectric films made of same material as the contacting layers. In the present work, a clear correlation between the piezoelectric response of inversely polarized ferroelectric PVDF/BaTiO3 nanocomposite films and the performance of the TENG-like device based on these films is demonstrated. This observation is explained by magnified electrostatic induction that is driven by piezoelectric charges and ferroelectric properties of these films. A double capacitor model is proposed that effectively portrays the interactions between ferroelectric layers during contact-separation and subsequent charge redistributions in the external circuit. The new understanding has allowed the result of 3-fold higher open circuit voltages (2.7 kV from 5 cm2) as compared to that of a state of the art TENG. Furthermore, findings uncover the potential for vast improvement in the field of nanogenerators for mechanical energy harvesting as a significantly better piezoelectric performance of flexible nanogenerators has been reported elsewhere.     Abstract The share of wind generation in the Irish and British electricity markets is set to increase by 2020 due to renewable energy (RE) targets. The United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland have set ambitious targets which require 30% and 40% of electricity demand to come from RE, mainly wind, by 2020, respectively. Ireland has sufficient indigenous onshore wind energy resources to exceed the RE target, while the UK faces uncertainty in achieving its target. A possible solution for the UK is to import RE directly from large scale onshore and offshore wind energy projects in Ireland; this possibility has recently been explored by both governments but is currently on hold. Thus, the aim of this paper is to estimate the effects of large scale wind energy in the Irish and British electricity markets in terms of wholesale system marginal prices, total generation costs and CO2 emissions. The results indicate when the large scale Irish-based wind energy projects are connected directly to the UK there is a decrease of 0.6% and 2% in the Irish and British wholesale system marginal prices under the UK National Grid slow progression scenario, respectively.

    The rapid increase in energy demand for data center requires improved cooling techniques. This study investigates, numerically and experimentally, the energy efficiency optimization based on server level air flows and also identifies the potential for waste heat recovery from the air stream for a hybrid air/liquid cooled server. Multi-objective genetic algorithm and entropy generation minimization are chosen as tools to address the multiple objectives involved in the problem and examine the cooling performance and waste heat recovery potential. Selected experimental measurements have successfully validated the CFD simulation model.

    The literature review presented in this paper centres on the external factors that influence PV output performance in the Irish climate. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels show long-term performance degradation, resulting in lower like-per-like efficiencies and performance ratios. Manufacturers of solar photovoltaic modules typically guarantee a life span of more than 20 years. But to meet such guarantees, it is necessary to track and mitigate PV module degradation during this period, and identify maintenance and repair requirements beyond this period. Solar PV modules degrade over time, becoming less efficient, less reliable, and, eventually, inoperable. External factors such as solar irradiance, dust deposition, shading, ambient temperature, operating cell temperature, humidity and wind velocity affect the PV output performance in the Irish climate. This is because the performance of a PV system is heavily influenced by the meteorological conditions of the site locations. Therefore, this paper reviews the external factors that influence PV output performance in the Irish climate.

    Nano-structuring of metals is one of the greatest challenges for the future of plasmonic and photonic devices. Such a technology calls for the development of ultra-fast, high-throughput and low cost fabrication techniques. Laser processing accounts for the aforementioned properties, representing an unrivalled tool towards the anticipated arrival of modules based in metallic nano-structures, with an extra advantage: the ease of scalability. Specifically, laser nano-structuring of an ultra-thin metal film or an alternating metal film on a substrate/metal film on a substrate results respectively on surface (metallic nanoparticles on the surface of the substrate) or subsurface (metallic nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric matrix) plasmonic patterns with many applications. In this work we investigate theoretically the photo-thermal processes involved in surface and sub-surface plasmonic nano-structuring and compare to experiments. To this end, we present a design process and develop functional\ud plasmonic nano-structures with pre-determined morphology by tuning the annealing parameters like the laser fluence and wavelength and/or the structure parameters like the thickness of the metallic film and the volume ratio of the metal film on a substrate-metal composite. For the surface plasmonic nano-structuring we utilize the ability to tune the laser's wavelength to either match the absorption spectral profile of the metal or to be\ud resonant with the plasma oscillation frequency, i.e. we utilize different optical absorption mechanisms that are\ud size-selective. Thus, we overcome a great challenge of laser induced self assembly by combining simultaneously\ud large-scale character with nanometer scale precision. For subsurface plasmonic nano-structuring, on the other hand, we utilize the temperature gradients that are developed spatially across the metal/dielectric nano-composite\ud structure during the laser treatment. We find that the developed temperature gradients are strongly depended on the nanocrystalline character of the dielectric host which determines its thermal conductivity, the composition of the ceramic/metal and the total thickness of the nano-composite film. The aforementioned material parameters combined with the laser annealing parameters can be used to pre-design the final morphology of the sub-surface plasmonic structure. The proposed processes can serve as a platform that will stimulate further progress towards the engineering of plasmonic devices.

    Metamaterials is a large family of microwave structures that produces interesting ε and μ conditions with huge implications for numerous electromagnetic applications. Following a description of modern techniques to realize epsilon-negative, mu-negative and double-negative metamaterials, this paper explores recent literature on the use of metamaterials in hot research areas such as metamaterial-inspired microwave components, antenna applications and imaging. This contribution is meant to provide an updated overview of complex microwave engineering for the generation of different types of metamaterials and their application in topical electromagnetic scenarios.

    Both the outcomes of technical and economical feasibility analysis of a renewable based power system should be positive to achieve sustainability. Energy production or Renewable Energy Feed-in-Tariff (REFIT) cost should be lower or higher respectively than the existing grid electricity cost. As the renewable energy sources are variable and where REFIT is also applicable for the system connected to the grid, the detailed hourly time series analysis is very important. Based on this issue, in this paper, a techno-economic feasibility analysis has been performed for a PV based micro-generation system to find out the possible ways to make the micro-generation (μGen) system sustainable in low irradiation region. As a case study, the city of Dublin, Ireland has been chosen for the detailed analysis. Analysis shows how the technological improvement can help to popularize the μGen system in Ireland. The procedure can be followed by other countries as well.

    Power systems have evolved as countries implement energy policies focusing on energy efficiency and increased share of renewable energy sources (RES). At the forefront is non-dispatchable generation such as wind and solar. Traditionally power systems were designed for fully dispatchable generating plant. However, these powers systems are under additional pressure due to the variable operational characteristics of RES. Consequently, capital investments in grid reinforcement, interconnection, additional gas generators and smart grid initiatives have been proposed and implemented. Moreover, an increased interest in energy storage technologies has evolved due to their various economic and operational benefits to power systems. Current compressed air energy storage (CAES) plants have shown economic feasibility and reliability. Thus, the main focus of this paper is to investigate and compare two scenarios; one without CAES and a second with CAES as an additional generator in the 2020 Irish power system using power systems simulation software PLEXOS.

    The use of mobile computing devices has become more and more common as such devices have become more and more affordable and powerful. With increases in throughput speed and decreases in device size, wireless multimedia streaming to battery powered mobile devices has become widespread. However, the battery power has not kept up with the advances in technology and has not increased so rapidly. This deficiency in battery power provides motivation for development of more energy efficient multimedia streaming methods and procedures. As such, an adaptive delivery mechanism is proposed to take into account the various drains on battery life and adjust rates appropriately when the battery is low. This paper proposes a Power Save-based Adaptive Multimedia Delivery Mechanism (PS-AMy) which makes a seamless multimedia adaptation based on the current energy level and packet loss, in order to enable the multimedia streaming to last longer while maintaining acceptable user-perceived quality levels. The proposed mechanism is evaluated by simulation using Network Simulator (NS-2).

    It was recently reported that more efficient triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-like devices can be prepared using inversely polarized ferroelectric films made of same material as the contacting layers. In the present work, a clear correlation between the piezoelectric response of inversely polarized ferroelectric PVDF/BaTiO3 nanocomposite films and the performance of the TENG-like device based on these films is demonstrated. This observation is explained by magnified electrostatic induction that is driven by piezoelectric charges and ferroelectric properties of these films. A double capacitor model is proposed that effectively portrays the interactions between ferroelectric layers during contact-separation and subsequent charge redistributions in the external circuit. The new understanding has allowed the result of 3-fold higher open circuit voltages (2.7 kV from 5 cm2) as compared to that of a state of the art TENG. Furthermore, findings uncover the potential for vast improvement in the field of nanogenerators for mechanical energy harvesting as a significantly better piezoelectric performance of flexible nanogenerators has been reported elsewhere.     Abstract The share of wind generation in the Irish and British electricity markets is set to increase by 2020 due to renewable energy (RE) targets. The United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland have set ambitious targets which require 30% and 40% of electricity demand to come from RE, mainly wind, by 2020, respectively. Ireland has sufficient indigenous onshore wind energy resources to exceed the RE target, while the UK faces uncertainty in achieving its target. A possible solution for the UK is to import RE directly from large scale onshore and offshore wind energy projects in Ireland; this possibility has recently been explored by both governments but is currently on hold. Thus, the aim of this paper is to estimate the effects of large scale wind energy in the Irish and British electricity markets in terms of wholesale system marginal prices, total generation costs and CO2 emissions. The results indicate when the large scale Irish-based wind energy projects are connected directly to the UK there is a decrease of 0.6% and 2% in the Irish and British wholesale system marginal prices under the UK National Grid slow progression scenario, respectively.

    The rapid increase in energy demand for data center requires improved cooling techniques. This study investigates, numerically and experimentally, the energy efficiency optimization based on server level air flows and also identifies the potential for waste heat recovery from the air stream for a hybrid air/liquid cooled server. Multi-objective genetic algorithm and entropy generation minimization are chosen as tools to address the multiple objectives involved in the problem and examine the cooling performance and waste heat recovery potential. Selected experimental measurements have successfully validated the CFD simulation model.
