    Pre-stimulus alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (16-20 Hz) oscillations have been frequently linked to the prediction of upcoming sensory input. Do these frequency bands serve as a neural marker of linguistic prediction as well? We hypothesized that if pre-stimulus alpha and beta oscillations index language predictions, their power should monotonically relate to the degree of predictability of incoming words based on past context. We expected that the more predictable the last word of a sentence, the stronger the alpha and beta power modulation. To test this, we measured neural responses with magnetoencephalography of healthy individuals during exposure to a set of linguistically matched sentences featuring three levels of sentence context constraint (high, medium and low constraint). We observed fluctuations in alpha and beta power before last word onset, and modulations in M400 amplitude after last word onset. The M400 amplitude was monotonically related to the degree of context constraint, with a high constraining context resulting in the strongest amplitude decrease. In contrast, pre-stimulus alpha and beta power decreased more strongly for intermediate constraints, followed by high and low constraints. Therefore, unlike the M400, pre-stimulus alpha and beta dynamics were not indexing the degree of word predictability from sentence context.     We show that the solution of the two-dimensional Dirichlet problem set in a plane domain is the limit of the solutions of similar problems set on a sequence of one-dimensional networks as their size goes to zero. Roughly speaking this means that a membrane can be seen as the limit of rackets made of strings. For practical applications, we also show that the solutions of the discrete approximated problems (again on the one-dimensional networks) also converge to the solution of the two-dimensional Dirichlet problem.

    Cette contribution s'inscrit dans l'approche spatiale de l'attachement au lieu, encore peu développée dans la littérature. Notre objectif est d'identifier différents types d'attachements qui peuvent exister à propos d'un lieu, d'analyser comment cet attache-ment se manifeste auprès des autres et sur le territoire et d'appréhender dans quelles conditions un attachement au lieu peut poser les bases d'un engagement politique. L'analyse de 142 entretiens menés entre 2005 et 2015 sur cinq terrains d'étude en milieu rural souligne la diversité des formes que l'attachement peut revêtir, diversité en termes d'entités aimées (nature, modernité, tradition) et d'implications sociales comme spatiales. Au niveau social, nous montrons que l'attachement au territoire est davantage vecteur de conflit que de coopération et que s'il est très présent d'un point de vue individuel, il s'inscrit rarement collectivement. Sur le plan spatial si certains acteurs présentent un attachement restreint à quelques entités sans implication envers elles, la majorité des attachés se mobilisent dans la recherche de nouveaux savoirs et dans la protection des entités aimées. Nous souhaitons montrer ici qu'un attachement au lieu peut se traduire politiquement si les acteurs d'un territoire sont actifs 1) dans la transmission de l'attachement à autrui (lien identitaire) ; 2) dans l'accumulation de savoirs et pour la protection des entités aimées et de leur environnement (lien différentiel). Ces deux indicateurs représentent le terreau pour le développement d'une identité spatiale collective et d'un engagement politique en faveur du lieu aimé. This article draws on the spatial approach to understanding place attachment. Our goal is to contribute to this currently poorly developed approach by identifying the many types of place attachment, analyzing their effects on social and spatial dynamics, and apprehending how place attachment can enhance political engagement. Our analysis, based on 142 interviews conducted in 5 different rural territories, underscores the diversity of place attachment, in terms of valued entities (nature, modernity, tradition) and in terms of social and spatial implications. At the social level, we show that place attachment produces more conflicts than cooperation processes and that this kind of attachment is more often individual in nature than collectively shared. At the spatial level, the majority of place-attached actors are enlisted in the building of new knowledge and actions for the protection of valued entities. We wish to show that place attachment can be converted into political engagement if the inhabitants of a territory are active (1) in the transmission of feelings of attachment to others (identity-related link), and (2) in the accumulation of knowledge and the protection of valued entities and their environment (differential link). These two indicators are considered to be at the basis of the emergence of a collective spatial identity and a political engagement toward the places in question.

    It has been reported that the construction of emotion profiling models using supervised machine learning involves data acquisition, signal pre-processing, feature extraction and classification. However, almost all papers do not address the issue of profiling emotion using supervised machine learning on the interrupted encephalogram (EEG) signals. Based on a preliminary study, emotion profiling on interrupted EEG signals produces low classification accuracy, using multilayer perceptron (MLP). Furthermore, lower emotion classification accuracy is produced from interrupted EEG signals with higher number of segments. Thus, the objective of this paper is to propose a technique and present the outcomes of handling interrupted EEG signals for emotion profiling. This is done by the suppression and interpolation of originally interrupted EEG signals at pre-process stage. As a result, emotion classification using MLP on interpolated data improves from 80.1% to 95%.

    AbstractThe brain responds to violations of expected rhythms, due to extraction- and prediction of the temporal structure in auditory input. Yet, it is unknown how probability of rhythm violations affects the overall rhythm predictability. Another unresolved question is whether predictive processes are independent of attention processes. In this study, EEG was recorded while subjects listened to rhythmic sequences. Predictability was manipulated by changing the stimulus-onset-asynchrony (SOA deviants) for given tones in the rhythm. When SOA deviants were inserted rarely, predictability remained high, whereas predictability was lower with more frequent SOA deviants. Dichotic tone-presentation allowed for independent manipulation of attention, as specific tones of the rhythm were presented to separate ears. Attention was manipulated by instructing subjects to attend to tones in one ear only, while keeping the rhythmic structure of tones constant. The analyses of event-related potentials revealed an attenuated N1 for tones when rhythm predictability was high, while the N1 was enhanced by attention to tones. Bayesian statistics revealed no interaction between predictability and attention. A right-lateralization of attention effects, but not predictability effects, suggested potentially different cortical processes. This is the first study to show that probability of rhythm violation influences rhythm predictability, independent of attention.

    Ce travail de thèse porte sur les miels de Corse commercialisés sous l’AOC et l’AOP « Miel de Corse-Mele di Corsica » et classés en six catégories variétales : « printemps », « maquis de printemps », « miellat du maquis », « maquis d’été », « châtaigneraie » et « maquis d’automne ». Notre objectif principal était de caractériser la composition volatile des miels de Corse et de développer une approche interdisciplinaire en vue de compléter la caractérisation de ces productions par la recherche de nouveaux critères pour la qualification de l’origine botanique et/ou géographique. Les travaux ont donc consisté à croiser les données obtenues par la méthode conventionnelle basée sur les analyses polliniques, sensorielles et physico-chimiques avec celles issues de l’analyse chimique de la fraction volatile des miels.Dans une première partie, 195 miels de nectar ont été caractérisés au niveau pollinique, physico-chimique ainsi que par leurs compositions volatiles. L’analyse pollinique a permis de certifier l’origine Corse et de mettre en évidence les principales espèces nectarifères de chaque gamme variétale et/ou les associations végétales caractéristiques des miellées. L’analyse de la fraction volatile par MEPS, CPG et CPG/SM a conduit à l’identification des marqueurs chimiques des diverses variétés de miels, à savoir la 2-aminoacétophénone (« châtaigneraie ») ; le p-anisaldéhyde et le 4-n-propylanisole (« maquis de printemps ») ; l’isophorone et le 3,4,5-triméthylphénol (« maquis d’automne ») ; les isomères de lilac aldéhyde et du p-menthèn-9-al (« printemps typé clémentinier »). De plus, une étude interdisciplinaire (analyse mélissopalynologique, physico-chimique et fraction volatile) basée sur l’utilisation de traitements statistiques des données multifactorielles a été menée sur chacune des catégories variétales. Les résultats obtenus ont permis de mieux cerner l’origine botanique des miels « quasi-monofloraux » ; de proposer des hypothèses sur les autres apports nectarifères et/ou miellatifères dans les miels à taxon dominant de type sur-représenté (« châtaigneraie ») et normal (« maquis de printemps ») ; de déterminer les différentes contributions nectarifères dans les miels dont l’espèce dominante à un taxon de type sous-représenté (« printemps » et « maquis d’automne ») et dans ceux ayant une origine botanique complexe (« maquis d’été »).Dans la seconde partie de nos travaux, nous avons caractérisé la fraction volatile de 74 miels des gammes « miellat du maquis » et « miel de Corse ». L’analyse statistique de la variabilité chimique a permis de distinguer les miellats de Metcalfa par la teneur en 3-furaldéhyde. Par ailleurs, nous avons pu qualifier l’origine botanique des miels dit « génériques » (mélange « miel de miellat »/« miel de nectar »), notamment les apports significatifs de « châtaigneraie » (molécule marqueur : 2-aminoacétophénone) et/ou de « maquis de printemps » (p-anisaldéhyde et 4-n-propylanisol).Enfin, ces travaux ont permis de développer une approche innovante basée sur une approche multifactorielle (polliniques, physico-chimiques et volatils) afin de mieux qualifier la complexité des origines botaniques des miels de Corse. This thesis was focused on the Corsican honeys under the AOC and AOP appellation “Miel de Corse-Mele di Corsica”. The Corsican honey was classified in six varietal categories: “spring”, “spring maquis”, “honeydew”, “summer maquis”, “chestnut grove” and “automne maquis”. The aim of this work was to characterize the volatile composition of Corsica honey and to develop an interdisciplinary approach to complete the characterization of Corsican honey and the qualification of the botanical and/or geographical origin. In the first part, 195 nectar honeys were characterized by melissopalynological, physico-chemical and volatile analyses. Pollen analysis allowed the certification of Corsican origin and highlights the main nectariferous species and/or characteristic plant associations of each varietal range. Thus, the volatile analysis by SPME, GC and GC/MS allowed the identification of some chemical markers of honey, namely 2-aminoacetophenone (“chestnut grove”); p-anisaldehyde and 4-n-propylanisole (“spring maquis”); isophorone and 3,4,5-trimethylphenol (“automne maquis”); isomers of lilac aldehydes and p-menth-1-en-9-al (“spring clementine”).For each honey range, an interdisciplinary study was carried out by using statistical analysis of multifactorial data (melissopalynological, physico-chemical and volatile data). These results allowed us to identify the “monofloral” honey samples; to propose some hypotheses about the nectar and/or honeydew contribution in honeys with dominant over-represented (“chestnut grove”) and normal taxon (“spring maquis”); and to determine the role of different nectariferous and/or polleniferous species in honeys with underrepresented taxon (“spring” and “autumn maquis”) and those with complex botanical origin (“summer maquis”).In the second part of our work, the volatile fraction of 74 Corsican honeydews and blend honeys has also been investigated. Statistical analysis of the volatile composition has distinguished Metcalfa honeydew by a high abundance of 3-furaldehyde. Otherwise, the other honey samples were characterized by a high abundance of 2-aminoacetopheneone (marker of “chestnut grove” honey) and/or p-anisaldehyde and 4-n-propylanisol (characteristic compounds of “spring maquis" honey). These observations could be explained by the nectar contribution of Castanea sativa and/or Erica arborea in the honeydew samples. Finally, this work has allowed us to develop an innovative approach based on multifactorial approach (pollen analysis, physic-chemical parameters, volatile composition) to obtain discriminant information for the determination of the floral origin from Corsican honeys.

    Pre-stimulus alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (16-20 Hz) oscillations have been frequently linked to the prediction of upcoming sensory input. Do these frequency bands serve as a neural marker of linguistic prediction as well? We hypothesized that if pre-stimulus alpha and beta oscillations index language predictions, their power should monotonically relate to the degree of predictability of incoming words based on past context. We expected that the more predictable the last word of a sentence, the stronger the alpha and beta power modulation. To test this, we measured neural responses with magnetoencephalography of healthy individuals during exposure to a set of linguistically matched sentences featuring three levels of sentence context constraint (high, medium and low constraint). We observed fluctuations in alpha and beta power before last word onset, and modulations in M400 amplitude after last word onset. The M400 amplitude was monotonically related to the degree of context constraint, with a high constraining context resulting in the strongest amplitude decrease. In contrast, pre-stimulus alpha and beta power decreased more strongly for intermediate constraints, followed by high and low constraints. Therefore, unlike the M400, pre-stimulus alpha and beta dynamics were not indexing the degree of word predictability from sentence context.     We show that the solution of the two-dimensional Dirichlet problem set in a plane domain is the limit of the solutions of similar problems set on a sequence of one-dimensional networks as their size goes to zero. Roughly speaking this means that a membrane can be seen as the limit of rackets made of strings. For practical applications, we also show that the solutions of the discrete approximated problems (again on the one-dimensional networks) also converge to the solution of the two-dimensional Dirichlet problem.

    Cette contribution s'inscrit dans l'approche spatiale de l'attachement au lieu, encore peu développée dans la littérature. Notre objectif est d'identifier différents types d'attachements qui peuvent exister à propos d'un lieu, d'analyser comment cet attache-ment se manifeste auprès des autres et sur le territoire et d'appréhender dans quelles conditions un attachement au lieu peut poser les bases d'un engagement politique. L'analyse de 142 entretiens menés entre 2005 et 2015 sur cinq terrains d'étude en milieu rural souligne la diversité des formes que l'attachement peut revêtir, diversité en termes d'entités aimées (nature, modernité, tradition) et d'implications sociales comme spatiales. Au niveau social, nous montrons que l'attachement au territoire est davantage vecteur de conflit que de coopération et que s'il est très présent d'un point de vue individuel, il s'inscrit rarement collectivement. Sur le plan spatial si certains acteurs présentent un attachement restreint à quelques entités sans implication envers elles, la majorité des attachés se mobilisent dans la recherche de nouveaux savoirs et dans la protection des entités aimées. Nous souhaitons montrer ici qu'un attachement au lieu peut se traduire politiquement si les acteurs d'un territoire sont actifs 1) dans la transmission de l'attachement à autrui (lien identitaire) ; 2) dans l'accumulation de savoirs et pour la protection des entités aimées et de leur environnement (lien différentiel). Ces deux indicateurs représentent le terreau pour le développement d'une identité spatiale collective et d'un engagement politique en faveur du lieu aimé. This article draws on the spatial approach to understanding place attachment. Our goal is to contribute to this currently poorly developed approach by identifying the many types of place attachment, analyzing their effects on social and spatial dynamics, and apprehending how place attachment can enhance political engagement. Our analysis, based on 142 interviews conducted in 5 different rural territories, underscores the diversity of place attachment, in terms of valued entities (nature, modernity, tradition) and in terms of social and spatial implications. At the social level, we show that place attachment produces more conflicts than cooperation processes and that this kind of attachment is more often individual in nature than collectively shared. At the spatial level, the majority of place-attached actors are enlisted in the building of new knowledge and actions for the protection of valued entities. We wish to show that place attachment can be converted into political engagement if the inhabitants of a territory are active (1) in the transmission of feelings of attachment to others (identity-related link), and (2) in the accumulation of knowledge and the protection of valued entities and their environment (differential link). These two indicators are considered to be at the basis of the emergence of a collective spatial identity and a political engagement toward the places in question.

    It has been reported that the construction of emotion profiling models using supervised machine learning involves data acquisition, signal pre-processing, feature extraction and classification. However, almost all papers do not address the issue of profiling emotion using supervised machine learning on the interrupted encephalogram (EEG) signals. Based on a preliminary study, emotion profiling on interrupted EEG signals produces low classification accuracy, using multilayer perceptron (MLP). Furthermore, lower emotion classification accuracy is produced from interrupted EEG signals with higher number of segments. Thus, the objective of this paper is to propose a technique and present the outcomes of handling interrupted EEG signals for emotion profiling. This is done by the suppression and interpolation of originally interrupted EEG signals at pre-process stage. As a result, emotion classification using MLP on interpolated data improves from 80.1% to 95%.

    AbstractThe brain responds to violations of expected rhythms, due to extraction- and prediction of the temporal structure in auditory input. Yet, it is unknown how probability of rhythm violations affects the overall rhythm predictability. Another unresolved question is whether predictive processes are independent of attention processes. In this study, EEG was recorded while subjects listened to rhythmic sequences. Predictability was manipulated by changing the stimulus-onset-asynchrony (SOA deviants) for given tones in the rhythm. When SOA deviants were inserted rarely, predictability remained high, whereas predictability was lower with more frequent SOA deviants. Dichotic tone-presentation allowed for independent manipulation of attention, as specific tones of the rhythm were presented to separate ears. Attention was manipulated by instructing subjects to attend to tones in one ear only, while keeping the rhythmic structure of tones constant. The analyses of event-related potentials revealed an attenuated N1 for tones when rhythm predictability was high, while the N1 was enhanced by attention to tones. Bayesian statistics revealed no interaction between predictability and attention. A right-lateralization of attention effects, but not predictability effects, suggested potentially different cortical processes.     Ce travail de thèse porte sur les miels de Corse commercialisés sous l’AOC et l’AOP « Miel de Corse-Mele di Corsica » et classés en six catégories variétales : « printemps », « maquis de printemps », « miellat du maquis », « maquis d’été », « châtaigneraie » et « maquis d’automne ». Notre objectif principal était de caractériser la composition volatile des miels de Corse et de développer une approche interdisciplinaire en vue de compléter la caractérisation de ces productions par la recherche de nouveaux critères pour la qualification de l’origine botanique et/ou géographique. Les travaux ont donc consisté à croiser les données obtenues par la méthode conventionnelle basée sur les analyses polliniques, sensorielles et physico-chimiques avec celles issues de l’analyse chimique de la fraction volatile des miels.Dans une première partie, 195 miels de nectar ont été caractérisés au niveau pollinique, physico-chimique ainsi que par leurs compositions volatiles. L’analyse pollinique a permis de certifier l’origine Corse et de mettre en évidence les principales espèces nectarifères de chaque gamme variétale et/ou les associations végétales caractéristiques des miellées. L’analyse de la fraction volatile par MEPS, CPG et CPG/SM a conduit à l’identification des marqueurs chimiques des diverses variétés de miels, à savoir la 2-aminoacétophénone (« châtaigneraie ») ; le p-anisaldéhyde et le 4-n-propylanisole (« maquis de printemps ») ; l’isophorone et le 3,4,5-triméthylphénol (« maquis d’automne ») ; les isomères de lilac aldéhyde et du p-menthèn-9-al (« printemps typé clémentinier »). De plus, une étude interdisciplinaire (analyse mélissopalynologique, physico-chimique et fraction volatile) basée sur l’utilisation de traitements statistiques des données multifactorielles a été menée sur chacune des catégories variétales. Les résultats obtenus ont permis de mieux cerner l’origine botanique des miels « quasi-monofloraux » ; de proposer des hypothèses sur les autres apports nectarifères et/ou miellatifères dans les miels à taxon dominant de type sur-représenté (« châtaigneraie ») et normal (« maquis de printemps ») ; de déterminer les différentes contributions nectarifères dans les miels dont l’espèce dominante à un taxon de type sous-représenté (« printemps » et « maquis d’automne ») et dans ceux ayant une origine botanique complexe (« maquis d’été »).Dans la seconde partie de nos travaux, nous avons caractérisé la fraction volatile de 74 miels des gammes « miellat du maquis » et « miel de Corse ». L’analyse statistique de la variabilité chimique a permis de distinguer les miellats de Metcalfa par la teneur en 3-furaldéhyde. Par ailleurs, nous avons pu qualifier l’origine botanique des miels dit « génériques » (mélange « miel de miellat »/« miel de nectar »), notamment les apports significatifs de « châtaigneraie » (molécule marqueur : 2-aminoacétophénone) et/ou de « maquis de printemps » (p-anisaldéhyde et 4-n-propylanisol).Enfin, ces travaux ont permis de développer une approche innovante basée sur une approche multifactorielle (polliniques, physico-chimiques et volatils) afin de mieux qualifier la complexité des origines botaniques des miels de Corse. This thesis was focused on the Corsican honeys under the AOC and AOP appellation “Miel de Corse-Mele di Corsica”. The Corsican honey was classified in six varietal categories: “spring”, “spring maquis”, “honeydew”, “summer maquis”, “chestnut grove” and “automne maquis”. The aim of this work was to characterize the volatile composition of Corsica honey and to develop an interdisciplinary approach to complete the characterization of Corsican honey and the qualification of the botanical and/or geographical origin. In the first part, 195 nectar honeys were characterized by melissopalynological, physico-chemical and volatile analyses. Pollen analysis allowed the certification of Corsican origin and highlights the main nectariferous species and/or characteristic plant associations of each varietal range. Thus, the volatile analysis by SPME, GC and GC/MS allowed the identification of some chemical markers of honey, namely 2-aminoacetophenone (“chestnut grove”); p-anisaldehyde and 4-n-propylanisole (“spring maquis”); isophorone and 3,4,5-trimethylphenol (“automne maquis”); isomers of lilac aldehydes and p-menth-1-en-9-al (“spring clementine”).For each honey range, an interdisciplinary study was carried out by using statistical analysis of multifactorial data (melissopalynological, physico-chemical and volatile data). These results allowed us to identify the “monofloral” honey samples; to propose some hypotheses about the nectar and/or honeydew contribution in honeys with dominant over-represented (“chestnut grove”) and normal taxon (“spring maquis”); and to determine the role of different nectariferous and/or polleniferous species in honeys with underrepresented taxon (“spring” and “autumn maquis”) and those with complex botanical origin (“summer maquis”).In the second part of our work, the volatile fraction of 74 Corsican honeydews and blend honeys has also been investigated. Statistical analysis of the volatile composition has distinguished Metcalfa honeydew by a high abundance of 3-furaldehyde. Otherwise, the other honey samples were characterized by a high abundance of 2-aminoacetopheneone (marker of “chestnut grove” honey) and/or p-anisaldehyde and 4-n-propylanisol (characteristic compounds of “spring maquis" honey). These observations could be explained by the nectar contribution of Castanea sativa and/or Erica arborea in the honeydew samples. Finally, this work has allowed us to develop an innovative approach based on multifactorial approach (pollen analysis, physic-chemical parameters, volatile composition) to obtain discriminant information for the determination of the floral origin from Corsican honeys.
