    Abstract Background In patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), run-off MR-angiography (MRA) is a commonly performed diagnostic test to obtain high-resolution images for evaluation of the arterial system from the aorta through the distal run-off vessels. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of visceral artery involvement (VAI) in patients with PAD and leg symptoms examined with run-off MRA. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 145 patients (median age 68 years, range 27–91) who underwent MRA due to known or suspected PAD at our institution between 2012 and 2018. MRA examinations were re-evaluated for visceral artery stenosis. Patient dossiers were reviewed to determine cardiovascular risk factors, kidney function and Fontaine stage of PAD. Results Involvement of at least one visceral artery with ≥ 50% diameter stenosis was found in 72 (50%) patients. There were no differences in age, gender, MRA indication, Fontaine stage, levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), cardiovascular risk factors or vascular comorbidities between patients with and without VAI. Renal artery (RA) involvement with ≥ 50% diameter stenosis was observed in 28 (20%) of patients. Patients with involvement of the RA were more likely to suffer from hypertension (79 vs. 54%, p = 0.019) and reduced renal function (glomerular filtration rate 70 vs. 88 mL/min/1.73m2, p = 0.014). Conclusion Visceral artery stenosis can be seen in half of patients with known or suspected PAD and leg symptoms on run-off MRA. Investigating for RA stenosis in patients with PAD and hypertension and/or impaired renal function may have high diagnostic yield.

    Squeezed states of light have been improving the sensitivity of gravitational-wave observatories and are nonclassical resources of quantum cryptography and envisioned photonic quantum computers. The higher the squeeze factor is, the higher is the quantum advantage. Almost all applications of squeezed light require multi-path optical interference, whose unavoidable imperfections introduce optical loss, degrade the squeeze factor, as well as the quantum advantage. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the distillation of Gaussian squeezed states that suffered from Gaussian photon loss. Our demonstration already involves two distillation steps. The first step improved the squeeze factor from 2.4 dB to 2.8 dB by the subtraction of two photons. The second step improved the value from 2.8 dB to 3.4 dB by a Gaussification protocol. It was realised on data measured at different times via an 8-port balanced homodyne detector and via data post-processing. The number of distillation steps can be increased by longer data sampling times, without additional hardware.     Four-particle correlations in fermion systems at finite temperatures are investigated with special attention to the formation of a condensate. Instead of the instability of the normal state with respect to the onset of pairing described by the Gorkov equation, a new equation is obtained which describes the onset of quartetting. Within a model calculation for symmetric nuclear matter, we find that below a critical density, the four-particle condensation (alpha-like quartetting) is favored over deuteron condensation (triplet pairing). This pairing-quartetting competition is expected to be a general feature of interacting fermion systems, such as the excition-biexciton system in excited semiconductors.     Heavy metals (HMs) are indestructible and non-biodegradable. Phytoremediation presents an opportunity to transfer HMs from environmental matrices into plants, making it easy to translocate from one place to another. The ornate features of HMs’ phytoremediation are biophilia and carbon neutrality, compared to the physical and chemical remediation methods. Some recent studies related to LCA also support that phytoremediation is technically more sustainable than competing technologies. However, one major post-application challenge associated with HMs phytoremediation is properly managing HMs contaminated biomass generated. Such a yield presents the problem of reintroducing HMs into the environment due to natural decomposition and release of plant sap from the harvested biomass. The transportation of high yields can also make phytoremediation economically inviable. This review presents the design of a sustainable phytoremediation strategy using an everevolving life cycle assessment tool. This review also discusses possible post-phytoremediation biomass management strategies for the HMs contaminated biomass management. These strategies include composting, leachate compaction, gasification, pyrolysis, torrefaction, and metal recovery. Further, the commercial outlook for properly utilizing HMs contaminated biomass was presented. Authors apologize to all authors whose research has supported this area of interest, and their relevant findings were left out during the preparation of this review.     This volume of ELOPE is dedicated to phonetics and phonology. The seven papers contributed by nine authors present a selection of topics that reflect the developments in these traditional fields of linguistics that have been (re)gaining momentum in recent years. The idea for the issue stems from the 14th conference of the European Society for the Study of English (Brno, Czech Republic, 29 August–2 September 2018), where the guest editors of this issue convened the seminar group “The Sounds of English: Cross- Linguistic and Cross-Cultural Aspects”. The seminar participants who contributed their articles are joined by other researchers working in the field.

    Laser-based transfection techniques have proven high applicability in several cell biologic applications. The delivery of different molecules using these techniques has been extensively investigated. In particular, new high-throughput approaches such as gold nanoparticle–mediated laser transfection allow efficient delivery of antisense molecules or proteins into cells preserving high cell viabilities. However, the cellular response to the perforation procedure is not well understood. We herein analyzed the perforation kinetics of single cells during resonant gold nanoparticle–mediated laser manipulation with an 850-ps laser system at a wavelength of 532 nm. Inflow velocity of propidium iodide into manipulated cells reached a maximum within a few seconds. Experiments based on the inflow of FM4-64 indicated that the membrane remains permeable for a few minutes for small molecules. To further characterize the cellular response postmanipulation, we analyzed levels of oxidative heat or general stress. Although we observed an increased formation of reactive oxygen species by an increase of dichlorofluorescein fluorescence, heat shock protein 70 was not upregulated in laser-treated cells. Additionally, no evidence of stress granule formation was visible by immunofluorescence staining. The data provided in this study help to identify the cellular reactions to gold nanoparticle–mediated laser manipulation.

    The article analyses the economic impact of compliance of the Lithuanian fleet with the new requirements of the MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI, which sets a limit for sulphur content in marine fuel to 0.1% in 2015 in Emission Control Area (ECA) and to 0.5% in 2020 globally. The assessment of several most realistic options of complying with the new requirements is presented in the article. Each of these methods is assessed by means of uncovering the economic and practical issues associated with applying their implementation to the Lithuanian fleet. An overview of Lithuanian fleet was carried out to choose the particular vessels for analysis. A group of 10 vessels was selected to compare the benefits and limitations of using low sulphur fuel and scrubbers. The economic impact of using low sulphur fuel or installing the scrubber for each vessel is also assessed in the article. E intenta alcanzar el siguiente Objetivo General, el cual es séxtuple: 1) Explicar qué entendemos por Bioderecho. 2) Explicar qué entendemos por carácter reduccionista de la actual reflexión académico-jurídica en el Bioderecho español. 3) Dentro del Bioderecho, contrastar la hipótesis en el concreto campo de la biodoctrina y, por extensión relacional, en la Teoría del Derecho. 4) Determinar si el reduccionismo indicado en la hipótesis se da en nuestra biolegislación y biojurisprudencia en la concreta materia del inicio de la vida. 5) Proclamar la importancia del valor de la protección en el Derecho, concretándola en la del nasciturus. 6) Proponer, si es factible, una reflexión biojurídica de carácter integrador, que recoja de modo interrelacional los elementos social, normativo y valorativo; con la finalidad de conseguir una protección del nasciturus válida, eficaz y dotada de seguridad jurídica. Para conseguir el objetivo general, los pasos a seguir son las tres líneas de investigación que a continuación se detallan: A) Identificar si en la biodoctrina, biolegislación y biojurisprudencia española se está reflexionando desde la perspectiva reduccionista indicada en la hipótesis y en los objetivos generales. Más concretamente, si la reflexión que realiza la biodoctrina en las Academias influye en la biolegislación y la biojurisprudencia. B) Comprobar si esta clase de reflexión alcanza e influye en el debate jurídico-moral de la sociedad. C) Concretar si las anteriores investigaciones (reduccionismo en la reflexión del bioderecho y su calado en el sentimiento jurídico de la sociedad) dan como resultado que la reflexión reduccionista en biojurídica es causa de la insuficiente protección jurídica del nasciturus en España.     Abstract Background In patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), run-off MR-angiography (MRA) is a commonly performed diagnostic test to obtain high-resolution images for evaluation of the arterial system from the aorta through the distal run-off vessels. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of visceral artery involvement (VAI) in patients with PAD and leg symptoms examined with run-off MRA. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 145 patients (median age 68 years, range 27–91) who underwent MRA due to known or suspected PAD at our institution between 2012 and 2018. MRA examinations were re-evaluated for visceral artery stenosis. Patient dossiers were reviewed to determine cardiovascular risk factors, kidney function and Fontaine stage of PAD. Results Involvement of at least one visceral artery with ≥ 50% diameter stenosis was found in 72 (50%) patients. There were no differences in age, gender, MRA indication, Fontaine stage, levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), cardiovascular risk factors or vascular comorbidities between patients with and without VAI. Renal artery (RA) involvement with ≥ 50% diameter stenosis was observed in 28 (20%) of patients. Patients with involvement of the RA were more likely to suffer from hypertension (79 vs. 54%, p = 0.019) and reduced renal function (glomerular filtration rate 70 vs. 88 mL/min/1.73m2, p = 0.014). Conclusion Visceral artery stenosis can be seen in half of patients with known or suspected PAD and leg symptoms on run-off MRA. Investigating for RA stenosis in patients with PAD and hypertension and/or impaired renal function may have high diagnostic yield.

    Squeezed states of light have been improving the sensitivity of gravitational-wave observatories and are nonclassical resources of quantum cryptography and envisioned photonic quantum computers. The higher the squeeze factor is, the higher is the quantum advantage. Almost all applications of squeezed light require multi-path optical interference, whose unavoidable imperfections introduce optical loss, degrade the squeeze factor, as well as the quantum advantage. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the distillation of Gaussian squeezed states that suffered from Gaussian photon loss. Our demonstration already involves two distillation steps. The first step improved the squeeze factor from 2.4 dB to 2.8 dB by the subtraction of two photons. The second step improved the value from 2.8 dB to 3.4 dB by a Gaussification protocol. It was realised on data measured at different times via an 8-port balanced homodyne detector and via data post-processing. The number of distillation steps can be increased by longer data sampling times, without additional hardware.     Four-particle correlations in fermion systems at finite temperatures are investigated with special attention to the formation of a condensate. Instead of the instability of the normal state with respect to the onset of pairing described by the Gorkov equation, a new equation is obtained which describes the onset of quartetting. Within a model calculation for symmetric nuclear matter, we find that below a critical density, the four-particle condensation (alpha-like quartetting) is favored over deuteron condensation (triplet pairing). This pairing-quartetting competition is expected to be a general feature of interacting fermion systems, such as the excition-biexciton system in excited semiconductors.     Heavy metals (HMs) are indestructible and non-biodegradable. Phytoremediation presents an opportunity to transfer HMs from environmental matrices into plants, making it easy to translocate from one place to another. The ornate features of HMs’ phytoremediation are biophilia and carbon neutrality, compared to the physical and chemical remediation methods. Some recent studies related to LCA also support that phytoremediation is technically more sustainable than competing technologies. However, one major post-application challenge associated with HMs phytoremediation is properly managing HMs contaminated biomass generated. Such a yield presents the problem of reintroducing HMs into the environment due to natural decomposition and release of plant sap from the harvested biomass. The transportation of high yields can also make phytoremediation economically inviable. This review presents the design of a sustainable phytoremediation strategy using an everevolving life cycle assessment tool. This review also discusses possible post-phytoremediation biomass management strategies for the HMs contaminated biomass management. These strategies include composting, leachate compaction, gasification, pyrolysis, torrefaction, and metal recovery. Further, the commercial outlook for properly utilizing HMs contaminated biomass was presented. Authors apologize to all authors whose research has supported this area of interest, and their relevant findings were left out during the preparation of this review.     This volume of ELOPE is dedicated to phonetics and phonology. The seven papers contributed by nine authors present a selection of topics that reflect the developments in these traditional fields of linguistics that have been (re)gaining momentum in recent years. The idea for the issue stems from the 14th conference of the European Society for the Study of English (Brno, Czech Republic, 29 August–2 September 2018), where the guest editors of this issue convened the seminar group “The Sounds of English: Cross- Linguistic and Cross-Cultural Aspects”. The seminar participants who contributed their articles are joined by other researchers working in the field.

    Laser-based transfection techniques have proven high applicability in several cell biologic applications. The delivery of different molecules using these techniques has been extensively investigated. In particular, new high-throughput approaches such as gold nanoparticle–mediated laser transfection allow efficient delivery of antisense molecules or proteins into cells preserving high cell viabilities. However, the cellular response to the perforation procedure is not well understood. We herein analyzed the perforation kinetics of single cells during resonant gold nanoparticle–mediated laser manipulation with an 850-ps laser system at a wavelength of 532 nm. Inflow velocity of propidium iodide into manipulated cells reached a maximum within a few seconds. Experiments based on the inflow of FM4-64 indicated that the membrane remains permeable for a few minutes for small molecules. To further characterize the cellular response postmanipulation, we analyzed levels of oxidative heat or general stress. Although we observed an increased formation of reactive oxygen species by an increase of dichlorofluorescein fluorescence, heat shock protein 70 was not upregulated in laser-treated cells. Additionally, no evidence of stress granule formation was visible by immunofluorescence staining. The data provided in this study help to identify the cellular reactions to gold nanoparticle–mediated laser manipulation.

    The article analyses the economic impact of compliance of the Lithuanian fleet with the new requirements of the MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI, which sets a limit for sulphur content in marine fuel to 0.1% in 2015 in Emission Control Area (ECA) and to 0.5% in 2020 globally. The assessment of several most realistic options of complying with the new requirements is presented in the article. Each of these methods is assessed by means of uncovering the economic and practical issues associated with applying their implementation to the Lithuanian fleet. An overview of Lithuanian fleet was carried out to choose the particular vessels for analysis. A group of 10 vessels was selected to compare the benefits and limitations of using low sulphur fuel and scrubbers. The economic impact of using low sulphur fuel or installing the scrubber for each vessel is also assessed in the article.     La Tesis que defendemos es que la biolegislación influye en el sentimiento jurídico de la sociedad, al menos en lo que se refiere a la protección jurídica del nasciturus; y esa biolegislación ¿cargada de biopolítica- hunde sus raíces en las Academias. De ahí el subtítulo: de la teoría a la praxis. Esa tesis parte de la siguiente Hipótesis: El carácter reduccionista en la actual reflexión académico-jurídica en el Bioderecho español como una de las posibles causas explicativas de la insuficiente protección biojurídica del nasciturus. Su influencia en el sentimiento jurídico y en la praxis social. E intenta alcanzar el siguiente Objetivo General, el cual es séxtuple: 1) Explicar qué entendemos por Bioderecho. 2) Explicar qué entendemos por carácter reduccionista de la actual reflexión académico-jurídica en el Bioderecho español. 3) Dentro del Bioderecho, contrastar la hipótesis en el concreto campo de la biodoctrina y, por extensión relacional, en la Teoría del Derecho. 4) Determinar si el reduccionismo indicado en la hipótesis se da en nuestra biolegislación y biojurisprudencia en la concreta materia del inicio de la vida. 5) Proclamar la importancia del valor de la protección en el Derecho, concretándola en la del nasciturus. 6) Proponer, si es factible, una reflexión biojurídica de carácter integrador, que recoja de modo interrelacional los elementos social, normativo y valorativo; con la finalidad de conseguir una protección del nasciturus válida, eficaz y dotada de seguridad jurídica. Para conseguir el objetivo general, los pasos a seguir son las tres líneas de investigación que a continuación se detallan: A) Identificar si en la biodoctrina, biolegislación y biojurisprudencia española se está reflexionando desde la perspectiva reduccionista indicada en la hipótesis y en los objetivos generales. Más concretamente, si la reflexión que realiza la biodoctrina en las Academias influye en la biolegislación y la biojurisprudencia. B) Comprobar si esta clase de reflexión alcanza e influye en el debate jurídico-moral de la sociedad. C) Concretar si las anteriores investigaciones (reduccionismo en la reflexión del bioderecho y su calado en el sentimiento jurídico de la sociedad) dan como resultado que la reflexión reduccionista en biojurídica es causa de la insuficiente protección jurídica del nasciturus en España.
