    expertise and values for more sustainable urban developments and renewals. This paper explores two cases on how this concept has emerged. The first case is An Shan Si Cun (鞍山四村). This housing block was built in the 1950s for employees of some state-owned enterprises. The second case is Jing Lao Cun (敬老邨). This alley house neighborhood was built in 1930s for migrants who came to Shanghai. Furthermore, this paper is to explore and compare their approaches to sustainable urban renewal, which attempts to preserve these communities that represent cultural and built heritage in Shanghai. Specifically, this paper examines the challenges and accomplishments of these experiments, and discusses policy implications for future tactics of sustainable urban renewal. Since the 1990s, Shanghai has experienced massive urban development and renewal as ways to respond to its demographic, economic, and living space needs. Previous policies have led to the demolishment of many historical communities and valuable heritage housing. The existing ones continue to face extreme threats, such as bad physical conditions and the marginalization of communities. Yet there is a recent trend that emphasizes sustainable urban renewal named microregeneration (微更新), launched by municipal and local states since 2016. One of the main approaches of the initiative was to form new urban coalitions to focus on collaborative governance that helps integrate different agents&rsquo

    AN APPROXIMATE MODEL for hoop-stress-increase estimation of pipelines subjected to fluid-hammer conditions is developed. The model takes into account the pressure oscillations and the elastic properties of steel. The solution of the derived differential equation is based on finite Fourier and Laplace transforms. The proposed methodology is implemented to a representative example and the results are discussed.

    Open spaces (OSs), such as streets, squares, and green areas, in existing built environments (BEs) are key places in disaster risk management. The seismic risk in the OSs is strictly related to BE characteristics. Scientific literature mainly focuses on extrinsic factors affecting risk, which are related to BE elements on the OSs frontier (e.g., buildings) that could cause indirect effects on the OSs. Conversely, just a few risk assessment studies consider intrinsic factors, which are related to OS elements that could suffer direct effects. Moreover, synoptic studies on such factors are still missing. Through literature-based research, the paper identifies specific factors influencing seismic risk in the OSs, focusing notably on intrinsic vulnerability. The literature review methodology includes both a systematic review from Scopus databases and a traditional bibliographic search using snowball analysis. According to the final selected papers, risk factors are classified into five categories of OS characteristics: morpho-typology; physical; construction; use and users; and context. Statistical analysis of the categories’ recurrence in the final papers firstly allows current literature gaps to be defined. The results also provide a preliminary OSs risk index weighting each category in terms of such recurrences, thus representing a first useful step to support non-expert stakeholders in a preliminary assessment of priorities to define the seismic risk of Oss.

    At present, surveillance is attracting attention in the field of UAV development. In particular, border surveillance plays a vital role in obtaining the required data around the border and for assisting in military operations. The primary function of this Hybrid UAV (VTOL and Fixed Wing) is to provide prerequisite data, captured during day/night surveillance, to the respective database. One of the primary problems that arise in border patrolling is the use of the UAV under different environmental conditions, thereby reducing its endurance firmly. In addition to the surveillance equipment, energy harvesting techniques are involved in solving the problem of endurance. The piezoelectric energy harvester and solar panels are added to harvest electrical energy in the UAV. Based on this application, the conceptual design of the Hybrid UAV, based on nature, was designed and investigated theoretically, as well as computationally. A series of analysis, which includes Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Analysis and Analytical approach, was used to determine the energy harvested from the energy harvester. This work confirms the proposed integrated engineering approach for the estimation of renewable energy, via PVEH patches, and the same approach is thus offered to researchers for subsequent applications. Additionally, a hybrid energy idea for newly developed drones was proposed in this work. This concept will be extensively used in the unmanned aircraft system sectors.

    (1) Background and aims: The exploration of the intention to adopt electric vehicles has been intensively studied in developed countries where passenger cars are the most common private motorized vehicle. However, the same is not true for motorcycle-dependent countries such as Vietnam. This study aimed to advance our understanding of the determinants of motorcyclists’ intention to use electric vehicles (i.e., electric passenger cars) in settings where the motorcycle is the dominant mode. (2) Data and methods: The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and the data from 330 motorcycle owners in Hanoi, Vietnam, were utilized to empirically test a research framework formulated based on the push–pull–mooring migration model. (3) Results: The results indicated that the push factor was formulated by safety concerns and environmental concerns while the pull factor was established by perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and financial incentive policy. Both the push factor and the pull factor significantly contributed to the adoption intention but the effect of the latter was stronger. Knowledge did not affect the intention; however, it moderated the link between the pull factor and the intention. For the respondents with a higher level of knowledge, the positive impact of the pull factor on the intention was lower (compared to those with a lower level of knowledge). (4) Conclusions: Based on the findings of the associated factors, policy implications were suggested to increase the prevalence of electric vehicles. Although the theoretical and practical contributions of this study may be significant to the literature regarding developing countries, more research is needed to validate and extend them.

    Summary. The paper presents the research results of cuts braking modes on the gravity humps. The objective of this paper is developing the methods for assessment of braking modes of cuts under conditions of fuzziness of their rolling properties, as well as selecting the permissible starting speed range of cuts from retardant positions. As a criterion for assessing the modes of target control of cut rolling speed, it was proposed to use an average gap size on a classification track at the established norms of probable exceeding of permissible speed of cars collision and their stop in retarders. As a criterion for evaluating the modes of interval control of cuts rolling speed, using the risk of their nonseparation on the switches was proposed. Using the simulation modeling and mathematical statistics, the configuration of the range of permissible speed of cuts coming out from retardant positions has been set. The conducted researches allow simplifying the choice of cut braking modes in systems of automatic control of cut rolling speed. ВЕРОЯТНОСТНЫЙ ПОДХОД К ОПРЕДЕЛЕНИЮ ДОПУСТИМЫХ РЕЖИМОВ ТОРМОЖЕНИЯ ОТЦЕПОВ НА СОРТИРОВОЧНЫХ ГОРКАХ Аннотация. В статье представлены результаты исследований режимов торможения отцепов на сортировочных горках. Целью статьи является разработка методов оценки режимов торможения отцепов в условиях неопределенности их ходовых характеристик, а также поиск области допустимых скоростей выхода отцепов из тормозных позиций. В качестве критерия для оценки режимов прицельного регулирования скорости скатывания отцепов предложено использовать среднюю величину окна на сортировочном пути при установленных нормах вероятности превышения допустимых скоростей соударения вагонов и остановки их в замедлителях. В качестве критерия для оценки режимов интервального регулирования скорости скатывания отцепов предложено использовать риск их неразделения на стрелках. С помощью методов имитационного моделирования и математической статистики установлена конфигурация области допустимых споростей выхода отцепов из тормозных позиций. Выполненные исследования позволяют упростить решение задачи выбора режимов торможения отцепов в системах автоматического управления скоростью их скатывания.

    The reasonable spatial layout of industries is crucial to carbon reduction and high-quality economic development. This paper establishes a research paradigm for optimizing the industrial spatial layout and high-quality development in the context of carbon peaking. Based on the perspectives of industrial transfer, the static agglomeration index, dynamic agglomeration index, industrial gradient coefficient, and low-carbon competitiveness index are used to analyze industrial agglomeration, competition status, and low-carbon competitiveness. Taking the Great Bend of the Yellow River (the Bend) as an example, we analyze the current situation in industrial development, guide the orderly transfer of industry, and optimize the spatial layout of industries to achieve high-quality economic development. The results show that resource- and capital-intensive industries have obvious advantages in agglomeration, competitive edge, and low-carbon competitiveness, while labor- and technology-intensive industries have weak advantages. The spatial layout of agglomerated industries was analyzed across four types of factor-intensive industries; these industries are the focus of industrial layout in the Bend. Promising industries were observed in all types of factor-intensive industries except capital-intensive industries, and these industries should be cultivated carefully in all provinces. Scale industries were mainly observed in resource- and capital-intensive industries; these industries should be transformed and upgraded to control the total amount and intensity of carbon emissions. The study’s findings provide a basis for optimizing the spatial layout of industries and reducing carbon emissions through industrial transfer in the context of carbon peaking. The relevant industries should be transformed and upgraded to control the total amount and intensity of carbon emissions.

    Abstract The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) will implement new automation tools to allow controllers to effectively manage the projected increase in air travel over the next decade. In order for the implementation of NextGen tools to be successful, it is important that air traffic controllers (ATCos) develop appropriate levels of trust in these automated tools. The present study investigated whether students could be trained to trust automation in a NextGen environment, and whether their trust in automation would affect their air traffic management performance. We also examined if personality traits influence the student's likelihood to trust automation. We found an early benefit in terms of efficiency in air traffic management for students who were trained to trust automation. We also found that people with high emotional stability reported higher levels of trust in automation.

    The interconnection of water, energy, and food constitutes a complex and intricate relationship. A comprehensive index system for the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) in Henan Province was formulated utilizing entropy weighting and the analytic hierarchy process. This was carried out to quantify and assess the evolution of the WEF nexus from 2006 to 2020. GeoDetector was employed to ascertain how selected factors influenced the coupled, coordinated growth of the WEF nexus. Three principal findings were revealed in this study. (1) The value of the comprehensive evaluation index of the WEF nexus increased over the study period from 0.2752 to 0.7044, with the degree of coupling coordination expanding from 0.5232 to 0.8361, indicating an overall increasing trend. (2) Significant spatial disparities across the province were detected in the degree of coupling coordination of the WEF nexus. Cities such as Kaifeng, Zhengzhou, and Luoyang had greater degrees of WEF coupling coordination compared to other cities, while Jiyuan demonstrated the least degree of coordination. (3) GeoDetector exhibited that factors like education expenditure, arable land area, and population density individually exerted a strong influence on coupling coordination; the influence of two-factor combinations heightened this effect, and nonlinear relationships between factor pairs further increased the influence. This investigation offers a conceptual structure for planning and implementing high-quality development in the YRB in Henan Province, thus serving as an essential reference for local governmental decision making.

    expertise and values for more sustainable urban developments and renewals. This paper explores two cases on how this concept has emerged. The first case is An Shan Si Cun (鞍山四村). This housing block was built in the 1950s for employees of some state-owned enterprises. The second case is Jing Lao Cun (敬老邨). This alley house neighborhood was built in 1930s for migrants who came to Shanghai. Furthermore, this paper is to explore and compare their approaches to sustainable urban renewal, which attempts to preserve these communities that represent cultural and built heritage in Shanghai. Specifically, this paper examines the challenges and accomplishments of these experiments, and discusses policy implications for future tactics of sustainable urban renewal. Since the 1990s, Shanghai has experienced massive urban development and renewal as ways to respond to its demographic, economic, and living space needs. Previous policies have led to the demolishment of many historical communities and valuable heritage housing. The existing ones continue to face extreme threats, such as bad physical conditions and the marginalization of communities. Yet there is a recent trend that emphasizes sustainable urban renewal named microregeneration (微更新), launched by municipal and local states since 2016. One of the main approaches of the initiative was to form new urban coalitions to focus on collaborative governance that helps integrate different agents&rsquo

    AN APPROXIMATE MODEL for hoop-stress-increase estimation of pipelines subjected to fluid-hammer conditions is developed. The model takes into account the pressure oscillations and the elastic properties of steel. The solution of the derived differential equation is based on finite Fourier and Laplace transforms. The proposed methodology is implemented to a representative example and the results are discussed.

    Open spaces (OSs), such as streets, squares, and green areas, in existing built environments (BEs) are key places in disaster risk management. The seismic risk in the OSs is strictly related to BE characteristics. Scientific literature mainly focuses on extrinsic factors affecting risk, which are related to BE elements on the OSs frontier (e.g., buildings) that could cause indirect effects on the OSs. Conversely, just a few risk assessment studies consider intrinsic factors, which are related to OS elements that could suffer direct effects. Moreover, synoptic studies on such factors are still missing. Through literature-based research, the paper identifies specific factors influencing seismic risk in the OSs, focusing notably on intrinsic vulnerability. The literature review methodology includes both a systematic review from Scopus databases and a traditional bibliographic search using snowball analysis. According to the final selected papers, risk factors are classified into five categories of OS characteristics: morpho-typology; physical; construction; use and users; and context. Statistical analysis of the categories’ recurrence in the final papers firstly allows current literature gaps to be defined. The results also provide a preliminary OSs risk index weighting each category in terms of such recurrences, thus representing a first useful step to support non-expert stakeholders in a preliminary assessment of priorities to define the seismic risk of Oss.

    At present, surveillance is attracting attention in the field of UAV development. In particular, border surveillance plays a vital role in obtaining the required data around the border and for assisting in military operations. The primary function of this Hybrid UAV (VTOL and Fixed Wing) is to provide prerequisite data, captured during day/night surveillance, to the respective database. One of the primary problems that arise in border patrolling is the use of the UAV under different environmental conditions, thereby reducing its endurance firmly. In addition to the surveillance equipment, energy harvesting techniques are involved in solving the problem of endurance. The piezoelectric energy harvester and solar panels are added to harvest electrical energy in the UAV. Based on this application, the conceptual design of the Hybrid UAV, based on nature, was designed and investigated theoretically, as well as computationally. A series of analysis, which includes Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Analysis and Analytical approach, was used to determine the energy harvested from the energy harvester. This work confirms the proposed integrated engineering approach for the estimation of renewable energy, via PVEH patches, and the same approach is thus offered to researchers for subsequent applications. Additionally, a hybrid energy idea for newly developed drones was proposed in this work. This concept will be extensively used in the unmanned aircraft system sectors.

    (1) Background and aims: The exploration of the intention to adopt electric vehicles has been intensively studied in developed countries where passenger cars are the most common private motorized vehicle. However, the same is not true for motorcycle-dependent countries such as Vietnam. This study aimed to advance our understanding of the determinants of motorcyclists’ intention to use electric vehicles (i.e., electric passenger cars) in settings where the motorcycle is the dominant mode. (2) Data and methods: The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and the data from 330 motorcycle owners in Hanoi, Vietnam, were utilized to empirically test a research framework formulated based on the push–pull–mooring migration model. (3) Results: The results indicated that the push factor was formulated by safety concerns and environmental concerns while the pull factor was established by perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and financial incentive policy. Both the push factor and the pull factor significantly contributed to the adoption intention but the effect of the latter was stronger. Knowledge did not affect the intention; however, it moderated the link between the pull factor and the intention. For the respondents with a higher level of knowledge, the positive impact of the pull factor on the intention was lower (compared to those with a lower level of knowledge). (4) Conclusions: Based on the findings of the associated factors, policy implications were suggested to increase the prevalence of electric vehicles. Although the theoretical and practical contributions of this study may be significant to the literature regarding developing countries, more research is needed to validate and extend them.

    Summary. The paper presents the research results of cuts braking modes on the gravity humps. The objective of this paper is developing the methods for assessment of braking modes of cuts under conditions of fuzziness of their rolling properties, as well as selecting the permissible starting speed range of cuts from retardant positions. As a criterion for assessing the modes of target control of cut rolling speed, it was proposed to use an average gap size on a classification track at the established norms of probable exceeding of permissible speed of cars collision and their stop in retarders. As a criterion for evaluating the modes of interval control of cuts rolling speed, using the risk of their nonseparation on the switches was proposed. Using the simulation modeling and mathematical statistics, the configuration of the range of permissible speed of cuts coming out from retardant positions has been set. The conducted researches allow simplifying the choice of cut braking modes in systems of automatic control of cut rolling speed. ВЕРОЯТНОСТНЫЙ ПОДХОД К ОПРЕДЕЛЕНИЮ ДОПУСТИМЫХ РЕЖИМОВ ТОРМОЖЕНИЯ ОТЦЕПОВ НА СОРТИРОВОЧНЫХ ГОРКАХ Аннотация. В статье представлены результаты исследований режимов торможения отцепов на сортировочных горках. Целью статьи является разработка методов оценки режимов торможения отцепов в условиях неопределенности их ходовых характеристик, а также поиск области допустимых скоростей выхода отцепов из тормозных позиций. В качестве критерия для оценки режимов прицельного регулирования скорости скатывания отцепов предложено использовать среднюю величину окна на сортировочном пути при установленных нормах вероятности превышения допустимых скоростей соударения вагонов и остановки их в замедлителях. В качестве критерия для оценки режимов интервального регулирования скорости скатывания отцепов предложено использовать риск их неразделения на стрелках. С помощью методов имитационного моделирования и математической статистики установлена конфигурация области допустимых споростей выхода отцепов из тормозных позиций. Выполненные исследования позволяют упростить решение задачи выбора режимов торможения отцепов в системах автоматического управления скоростью их скатывания.

    The reasonable spatial layout of industries is crucial to carbon reduction and high-quality economic development. This paper establishes a research paradigm for optimizing the industrial spatial layout and high-quality development in the context of carbon peaking. Based on the perspectives of industrial transfer, the static agglomeration index, dynamic agglomeration index, industrial gradient coefficient, and low-carbon competitiveness index are used to analyze industrial agglomeration, competition status, and low-carbon competitiveness. Taking the Great Bend of the Yellow River (the Bend) as an example, we analyze the current situation in industrial development, guide the orderly transfer of industry, and optimize the spatial layout of industries to achieve high-quality economic development. The results show that resource- and capital-intensive industries have obvious advantages in agglomeration, competitive edge, and low-carbon competitiveness, while labor- and technology-intensive industries have weak advantages. The spatial layout of agglomerated industries was analyzed across four types of factor-intensive industries; these industries are the focus of industrial layout in the Bend. Promising industries were observed in all types of factor-intensive industries except capital-intensive industries, and these industries should be cultivated carefully in all provinces. Scale industries were mainly observed in resource- and capital-intensive industries; these industries should be transformed and upgraded to control the total amount and intensity of carbon emissions. The study’s findings provide a basis for optimizing the spatial layout of industries and reducing carbon emissions through industrial transfer in the context of carbon peaking.     Abstract The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) will implement new automation tools to allow controllers to effectively manage the projected increase in air travel over the next decade. In order for the implementation of NextGen tools to be successful, it is important that air traffic controllers (ATCos) develop appropriate levels of trust in these automated tools. The present study investigated whether students could be trained to trust automation in a NextGen environment, and whether their trust in automation would affect their air traffic management performance. We also examined if personality traits influence the student's likelihood to trust automation. We found an early benefit in terms of efficiency in air traffic management for students who were trained to trust automation. We also found that people with high emotional stability reported higher levels of trust in automation.

    The interconnection of water, energy, and food constitutes a complex and intricate relationship. A comprehensive index system for the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) in Henan Province was formulated utilizing entropy weighting and the analytic hierarchy process. This was carried out to quantify and assess the evolution of the WEF nexus from 2006 to 2020. GeoDetector was employed to ascertain how selected factors influenced the coupled, coordinated growth of the WEF nexus. Three principal findings were revealed in this study. (1) The value of the comprehensive evaluation index of the WEF nexus increased over the study period from 0.2752 to 0.7044, with the degree of coupling coordination expanding from 0.5232 to 0.8361, indicating an overall increasing trend. (2) Significant spatial disparities across the province were detected in the degree of coupling coordination of the WEF nexus. Cities such as Kaifeng, Zhengzhou, and Luoyang had greater degrees of WEF coupling coordination compared to other cities, while Jiyuan demonstrated the least degree of coordination. (3) GeoDetector exhibited that factors like education expenditure, arable land area, and population density individually exerted a strong influence on coupling coordination; the influence of two-factor combinations heightened this effect, and nonlinear relationships between factor pairs further increased the influence. This investigation offers a conceptual structure for planning and implementing high-quality development in the YRB in Henan Province, thus serving as an essential reference for local governmental decision making.
