This report identifies transferable skills and competences relevant for early career researchers to gather during their doctoral training program and beyond, in order to increase their employability in multiple work sectors. A skills matrix and infographic (see Appendix) with nine different categories, containing a total of 66 transferable skills and competences, is presented. Advice on how to acquire and document these skills and competences is provided. Numerous and frequent examples of deep water bottom-current processes and products have been recorded in the recent evolution of the Iberian margins, comprising both erosive (terraces, abraded surfaces, channels, furrows and moats) and depositional (separated, sheeted, plastered and confined drifts) features of variable dimensions, depending on a variety of geological and oceanographic contexts. Most of them are related to the influence of the Mediterranean water masses, especially by the interaction of the Mediterranean Outflow Water with the seafloor. Despite their important scientific implications (stratigraphy, sedimentology, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology), geological hazards and economic potential, there is no full knowledge about the specific morphologic details of these features and its evolution as well as their relation with water masses and associated interphases. So, future multidisciplinary work has to be done between geologist and oceanographers for understanding the bottom current influence along the Iberian margin.

A benthic sampling programme was carried out in 1985/1986, in winter and summer, in order to characterize the intertidal community structure in the Mondego Estuary (Portugal). Echinogammarus marinus (Amphipoda, Gammaridae) was considered a key species in the algal-covered areas, and was particularly associated with Fucus spp. A study of its life cycle, population dynamics and production was therefore carried out. The results reinforce the generalized notion that estuaries are highly productive systems, and reflect the important role of Amphipods in the productivity of habitats colonized by them.

The general aim of this study was to investigate the negative short-term effects of different concentrations of chlorpyrifos (CPF) and cypermethrin (CYP), based on the EU legislation (MAC-EQS) in common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758) under laboratory conditions and to compare their toxicity. The fish were exposed to the pesticides for 96 h and then different histological and biochemical biomarkers were investigated in the gills and liver, and bioaccumulation analyses were conducted. The chemical studies showed increased pesticide concentrations in the gills as the first site for pollutants compared to the liver at the 96th hour. In addition, the histological analyses showed severe alterations in the gills and liver after exposure to both tested pesticides. In the gills, we found mainly intense proliferative and, to a lesser extent, degenerative changes and alterations in the circulatory system, such as necrosis and vasodilation. In the liver, regressive and progressive lesions, as well as circulatory disturbances and inflammation, were observed. The regressive lesions showed a higher degree of expression compared to the other changes. Furthermore, we found altered enzymatic activities—catalase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione peroxidase—in the liver, compared to the control. Overall, both tested pesticides impacted the studied biomarkers in common carp, even at concentrations lower than those permitted by law. However, the results of the comparative analysis showed a relatively higher toxicity of CYP compared to CPF in the fish. Still, questions persist as to whether the observed changes are adaptive or entirely destructive. To avoid any danger or risk, these pesticides must be applied cautiously, especially near water bodies.

This report gives recapture details of microtagged salmon recovered during 2008 commercial fishing season including broodstock. The report includes 1 and 2 sea winter recoveries, that is those fish which were released and migrated in 2007 and 2006.

This report provides a summary of the work carried out in the SUMMETH project. A summary of the following SUMMETH technical reports is included:- market study using automatic identification data to identify number of vessels in the north west Europe area with engines in the 250 to 1200 kW hours, and their fuel usage- engine technology study including the experimental investigation of several different methanol engine concepts to evaluate performance and emissions for the 250 to 1200 kW engine size range- conversion design of the case study road ferry and the associated hazard identification study- report on general recommendations for converting selected categories of smaller vessels to methanol operation- assessment of environmental, economic, safety, and supply and distribution considerations regarding the use of methanol as a sustainable fuel for smaller vessels.Project management and dissemination activities carried out over the project duration are also described.
