    AbstractIn the last decades, lowland tropical rainforest has been converted in large into plantation systems. Despite the evident changes above ground, the effect of rainforest conversion on the channeling of energy in soil food webs was not studied. Here, we investigated community‐level neutral lipid fatty acid profiles in dominant soil fauna to track energy channels in rainforest, rubber, and oil palm plantations in Sumatra, Indonesia. Abundant macrofauna including Araneae, Chilopoda, and Diplopoda contained high amounts of plant and fungal biomarker fatty acids (FAs). Lumbricina had the lowest amount of plant, but the highest amount of animal‐synthesized C20 polyunsaturated FAs as compared to other soil taxa. Mesofauna detritivores (Collembola and Oribatida) contained high amounts of algal biomarker FAs. The differences in FA profiles between taxa were evident if data were analyzed across land‐use systems, suggesting that soil fauna of different size (macro‐ and mesofauna) are associated with different energy channels. Despite that, rainforest conversion changed the biomarker FA composition of soil fauna at the community level. Conversion of rainforest into oil palm plantations enhanced the plant energy channel in soil food webs and reduced the bacterial energy channel; conversion into rubber plantations reduced the AMF‐based energy channel. The changes in energy distribution within soil food webs may have significant implications for the functioning of tropical ecosystems and their response to environmental changes. At present, these responses are hard to predict considering the poor knowledge on structure and functioning of tropical soil food webs.

    In order to minimize re-discovery of already known anti-infective compounds, we focused our screening approach on understudied, almost untapped marine environments including marine invertebrates and their associated bacteria. Therefore, two sea cucumber species, Holothuria leucospilota and Stichopus vastus, were collected from Lampung (Indonesia), and 127 bacterial strains were identified by partial 16S rRNA-gene sequencing analysis and compared with the NCBI database. In addition, the overall bacterial diversity from tissue samples of the sea cucumbers H. leucospilota and S. vastus was analyzed using the cultivation-independent Illumina MiSEQ analysis. Selected bacterial isolates were grown to high densities and the extracted biomass was tested against a selection of bacteria and fungi as well as the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Identification of putative bioactive bacterial-derived compounds were performed by analyzing the accurate mass of the precursor/parent ions (MS1) as well as product/daughter ions (MS2) using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analysis of all active fractions. With this attempt we were able to identify 23 putatively known and two previously unidentified precursor ions. Moreover, through 16S rRNA-gene sequencing we were able to identify putatively novel bacterial species from the phyla Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and also Firmicutes. Our findings suggest that sea cucumbers like H. leucospilota and S. vastus are promising sources for the isolation of novel bacterial species that produce compounds with potentially high biotechnological potential.

    The Aerobic Scope (AS), which reflects the functional capacity for biological fitness, is a highly relevant proxy to determine thermal tolerance in various taxa. Despite the importance of this method, its implementation is often hindered, due to lacking techniques to accurately measure standard- (SMR) and maximal- (MMR) metabolic rates, especially in sluggish marine invertebrates with low oxygen consumption rates, such as sea cucumbers. In this study the AS concept was modified to define a Temperature-induced Aerobic Scope (TAS), based on metabolic rate changes due to temperature adjustments rather than traditionally used physical activity patterns. Consequentially, temperature dependent peak and bottom O2 consumption rates, defined as Temperature-induced Maximal- (TMMR) and Standard Metabolic Rates (TSMR), respectively, served as MMR and SMR alternatives for the sea cucumber Holothuria scabra. TMMR and TSMR were induced through acute temperature change (2°C per hour; 17–41°C) until critical warm (WTcrit) and cold (CTcrit) temperatures were reached, respectively. In addition, Hsp70 gene expression linked to respiration rates served as synergistic markers to confirm critical threshold temperatures. O2 consumption of H. scabra peaked distinctly at WTcrit of 38°C (TMMR = 33.2 ± 4.7 μgO2 g-1 h-1). A clear metabolic bottom line was reached at CTcrit of 22°C (TSMR = 2.2 ± 1.4 μgO2 g-1 h-1). Within the thermal window of 22–38°C H. scabra sustained positive aerobic capacity, with assumed optimal performance range between 29–31.5°C (13.85–18.7 μgO2 g-1 h-1). Between 39–41°C H. scabra decreased respiration progressively, while gene expression levels of Hsp70 increased significantly at 41°C, indicating prioritization of heat shock response (HSR) and homeostatic disruption. At the cold end (17–22°C) homeostatic disruption was visible through incrementally increasing energetic expenses to fuel basal maintenance costs, but no Hsp70 overexpression occurred. TMMR, TSMR and TAS proved to be reliable metrics, similar to the traditional energetic key parameters MMR, SMR and AS, to determine a specific aerobic performance window for the sluggish bottom dwelling species H. scabra. In addition, the linkage between respiration physiology and molecular defense mechanisms showed valuable analytical synergies in terms of mechanistic prioritization as response to thermal stress. Overall, this study will help to define lethal temperatures for aquaculture and to predict the effects of environmental stress, such as ocean warming, in H. scabra.

    Rapid land-use change in the tropics causes dramatic losses in biodiversity and associated functions. In Sumatra, Indonesia, lowland rainforest has mainly been transformed by smallholders into oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) monocultures, interspersed with jungle rubber (rubber agroforests) and a few forest remnants. In two regions of the Jambi province, we conducted point counts in 32 plots of four different land-use types (lowland rainforest, jungle rubber, rubber plantation and oil palm plantation) as well as in 16 nearby homegardens, representing a small-scale, traditional agricultural system. We analysed total bird abundance and bird abundance in feeding guilds, as well as species richness per point count visit, per plot, and per land-use system, to unveil the conservation importance and functional responses of birds in the different land-use types. In total, we identified 71 species from 24 families. Across the different land-use types, abundance did not significantly differ, but both species richness per visit and per plot were reduced in plantations. Feeding guild abundances between land-use types were variable, but homegardens were dominated by omnivores and granivores, and frugivorous birds were absent from monoculture rubber and oil palm. Jungle rubber played an important role in harbouring forest bird species and frugivores. Homegardens turned out to be of minor importance for conserving birds due to their low sizes, although collectively, they are used by many bird species. Changes in functional composition with land-use conversion may affect important ecosystem functions such as biological pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal. In conclusion, maintaining forest cover, including degraded forest and jungle rubber, is of utmost importance to the conservation of functional and taxonomic bird diversity.

    We study the local seismicity in East Java around the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex that is connected via the Watukosek Fault System, to the spectacular Lusi eruption site. Lusi is a sediment-hosted hydrothermal system which has been erupting since 2006. It is fed by both mantellic and hydrothermal fluids, rising and mixing with the thermogenic gases and other fluids from shallower sedimentary formations. During a period of 24 months, we observe 156 micro-seismic earthquakes with local magnitudes ranging from ML0.5 to ML1.9, within our network. The events predominantly nucleate at depths of 8–13 km below the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex. Despite the geological evidence of active tectonic deformation and faulting observed at the surface, practically no seismicity is observed in the sedimentary basin hosting Lusi. Although we cannot entirely rule out artifacts due to an increased detection threshold in the sedimentary basin, the deficit in significant seismicity suggests aseismic deformation beneath Lusi due to the large amount of fluids that may lubricate the fault system. An analysis of focal mechanisms of nine selected events around the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex indicates predominantly strike-slip faulting activity in the region SW of Lusi. This type of activity is consistent with observable features such as fault escarpment, river deviation and railroad deformation; suggesting that the Watukosek fault system extends from the volcanic complex towards the NE of Java. Our results point out that the tectonic deformation of the region is characterized by a segmented fault system being part of a broader damage zone, rather than localized along a distinct fault plane.     Abstract Behavioural events that are important for understanding sociobiology and movement ecology are often rare, transient and localised, but can occur at spatially distant sites e.g. territorial incursions and co‐locating individuals. Existing animal tracking technologies, capable of detecting such events, are limited by one or more of: battery life; data resolution; location accuracy; data security; ability to co‐locate individuals both spatially and temporally. Technology that at least partly resolves these limitations would be advantageous. European badgers (Meles meles L.), present a challenging test‐bed, with extra‐group paternity (apparent from genotyping) contradicting established views on rigid group territoriality with little social‐group mixing. In a proof of concept study we assess the utility of a fully automated active‐radio‐frequency‐identification (aRFID) system combining badger‐borne aRFID‐tags with static, wirelessly‐networked, aRFID‐detector base‐stations to record badger co‐locations at setts (burrows) and near notional border latrines. We summarise the time badgers spent co‐locating within and between social‐groups, applying network analysis to provide evidence of co‐location based community structure, at both these scales. The aRFID system co‐located animals within 31.5 m (adjustable) of base‐stations. Efficient radio transmission between aRFIDs and base‐stations enables a 20 g tag to last for 2–5 years (depending on transmission interval). Data security was high (data stored off tag), with remote access capability. Badgers spent most co‐location time with members of their own social‐groups at setts; remaining co‐location time was divided evenly between intra‐ and inter‐social‐group co‐locations near latrines and inter‐social‐group co‐locations at setts. Network analysis showed that 20–100% of tracked badgers engaged in inter‐social‐group mixing per week, with evidence of trans‐border super‐groups, that is, badgers frequently transgressed notional territorial borders. aRFID occupies a distinct niche amongst established tracking technologies. We validated the utility of aRFID to identify co‐locations, social‐structure and inter‐group mixing within a wild badger population, leading us to refute the conventional view that badgers (social‐groups) are territorial and to question management strategies, for controlling bovine TB, based on this model. Ultimately aRFID proved a versatile system capable of identifying social‐structure at the landscape scale, operating for years and suitable for use with a range of species.

    Abstract. The Spermonde Archipelago, off the coast of southwest Sulawesi, consists of more than 100 small islands and hundreds of shallow-water reef areas. Most of the islands are bordered by coral reefs that grew in the past in response to paleo relative sea-level changes. Remnants of these reefs are preserved today in the form of fossil microatolls. In this study, we report the elevation, age, and paleo relative sea-level estimates derived from fossil microatolls surveyed in five islands of the Spermonde Archipelago. We describe 24 new sea-level index points, and we compare our dataset with both previously published proxies and with relative sea-level predictions from a set of 54 glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models, using different assumptions on both ice melting histories and mantle structure and viscosity. We use our new data and models to discuss Late Holocene (0–6 ka) relative sea-level changes in our study area and their implications in terms of modern relative sea-level estimates in the broader South and Southeast Asia region.

    Polygamy is common in Africa, and is blamed for negative outcomes. I use DHS data to test nine hypotheses about its prevalence and decline. First, historical inequality better predicts polygamy today than current inequality. Second, greater female involvement in agriculture reduces polygamy. Third, the slave trade predicts polygamy, but not robustly. Fourth, modern female education does not reduce polygamy. Colonial schooling does. Fifth, economic growth is weakly correlated with polygamy. Sixth and seventh, rainfall shocks and war increase polygamy, though their effects are small. Eighth, polygamy varies smoothly over borders, national bans notwithstanding. Finally, falling child mortality has reduced polygamy.

    Indonesia is a tsunami prone area, having been hit by 6 events within the last 6 years: The Christmas tsunami 26 December 2004 in Aceh (earthquake Mw 9.2) as the biggest in this decade, Nias 28 March 2005 (earthquake Mw 8.7), South Java 17 July 2006 (earthquake Mw 7.7), Bengkulu 12 September 2007 (earthquake Mw 7.7 8.4), Toli-toli Northern Sulawesi 17 November 2008 (earthquake Mw 7.6) and Manokwari Papua 4 January 2009 (earthquake Mw 7.3 7.6). Many scientists (in Indonesia and from other countries) have been working on investigating, simulating and analysing those events using numerical tsunami modelling tools, which are available as open-source/free-ware or even commercial-ware. Many numerical methods have been applied and are represented in these codes (Finite Difference, Finite Element, and Finite Volume). Gridding methods such as structured and unstructured non-adaptive have been applied.Since 11 November 2008, Indonesia has a sophisticated tsunami early warning system (Ina-TEWS) based on pre-computed simulation results for the database. An unstructured finite element based code developed at Alfred Wegener Institute (TsunAWI) as the official (operational) GITEWS tsunami model and an extended version of TUNAMI (finite difference) model as the contribution by Institut Teknologi Bandung are employed for this purpose as well as for creating hazard maps. Even though both tsunami models have been well tested and validated, they are still having some efficiency problems. TsunAWI suffers from high computational costs, while TUNAMI cannot be easily refined arbitrarily.To overcome those problems, we conduct further development in unstructured finite element tsunami modeling using adaptive mesh refinement. Similarly to TsunAWI, the new TsunaFLASH code uses unstructured finite elements with conforming (P1) and non-conforming (P1nc) elements. The objective of developing TsunaFLASH is to improve computational efficiency by avoiding unnecessary calculations and saving computer memory. amatos (Adaptive Mesh generator for ATmosphere and Ocean Simulation) by Behrens et al. (2006) is employed for generating adaptive triangular meshes.In addition to the numerical development, the acquisition of detailed high-resolution bathymetry and topography is a pre-requisite for obtaining accurate and reliable modeling results.     AbstractIn the last decades, lowland tropical rainforest has been converted in large into plantation systems. Despite the evident changes above ground, the effect of rainforest conversion on the channeling of energy in soil food webs was not studied. Here, we investigated community‐level neutral lipid fatty acid profiles in dominant soil fauna to track energy channels in rainforest, rubber, and oil palm plantations in Sumatra, Indonesia. Abundant macrofauna including Araneae, Chilopoda, and Diplopoda contained high amounts of plant and fungal biomarker fatty acids (FAs). Lumbricina had the lowest amount of plant, but the highest amount of animal‐synthesized C20 polyunsaturated FAs as compared to other soil taxa. Mesofauna detritivores (Collembola and Oribatida) contained high amounts of algal biomarker FAs. The differences in FA profiles between taxa were evident if data were analyzed across land‐use systems, suggesting that soil fauna of different size (macro‐ and mesofauna) are associated with different energy channels. Despite that, rainforest conversion changed the biomarker FA composition of soil fauna at the community level. Conversion of rainforest into oil palm plantations enhanced the plant energy channel in soil food webs and reduced the bacterial energy channel; conversion into rubber plantations reduced the AMF‐based energy channel. The changes in energy distribution within soil food webs may have significant implications for the functioning of tropical ecosystems and their response to environmental changes. At present, these responses are hard to predict considering the poor knowledge on structure and functioning of tropical soil food webs.

    In order to minimize re-discovery of already known anti-infective compounds, we focused our screening approach on understudied, almost untapped marine environments including marine invertebrates and their associated bacteria. Therefore, two sea cucumber species, Holothuria leucospilota and Stichopus vastus, were collected from Lampung (Indonesia), and 127 bacterial strains were identified by partial 16S rRNA-gene sequencing analysis and compared with the NCBI database. In addition, the overall bacterial diversity from tissue samples of the sea cucumbers H. leucospilota and S. vastus was analyzed using the cultivation-independent Illumina MiSEQ analysis. Selected bacterial isolates were grown to high densities and the extracted biomass was tested against a selection of bacteria and fungi as well as the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Identification of putative bioactive bacterial-derived compounds were performed by analyzing the accurate mass of the precursor/parent ions (MS1) as well as product/daughter ions (MS2) using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analysis of all active fractions. With this attempt we were able to identify 23 putatively known and two previously unidentified precursor ions. Moreover, through 16S rRNA-gene sequencing we were able to identify putatively novel bacterial species from the phyla Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and also Firmicutes. Our findings suggest that sea cucumbers like H. leucospilota and S. vastus are promising sources for the isolation of novel bacterial species that produce compounds with potentially high biotechnological potential.

    The Aerobic Scope (AS), which reflects the functional capacity for biological fitness, is a highly relevant proxy to determine thermal tolerance in various taxa. Despite the importance of this method, its implementation is often hindered, due to lacking techniques to accurately measure standard- (SMR) and maximal- (MMR) metabolic rates, especially in sluggish marine invertebrates with low oxygen consumption rates, such as sea cucumbers. In this study the AS concept was modified to define a Temperature-induced Aerobic Scope (TAS), based on metabolic rate changes due to temperature adjustments rather than traditionally used physical activity patterns. Consequentially, temperature dependent peak and bottom O2 consumption rates, defined as Temperature-induced Maximal- (TMMR) and Standard Metabolic Rates (TSMR), respectively, served as MMR and SMR alternatives for the sea cucumber Holothuria scabra. TMMR and TSMR were induced through acute temperature change (2°C per hour; 17–41°C) until critical warm (WTcrit) and cold (CTcrit) temperatures were reached, respectively. In addition, Hsp70 gene expression linked to respiration rates served as synergistic markers to confirm critical threshold temperatures. O2 consumption of H. scabra peaked distinctly at WTcrit of 38°C (TMMR = 33.2 ± 4.7 μgO2 g-1 h-1). A clear metabolic bottom line was reached at CTcrit of 22°C (TSMR = 2.2 ± 1.4 μgO2 g-1 h-1). Within the thermal window of 22–38°C H. scabra sustained positive aerobic capacity, with assumed optimal performance range between 29–31.5°C (13.85–18.7 μgO2 g-1 h-1). Between 39–41°C H. scabra decreased respiration progressively, while gene expression levels of Hsp70 increased significantly at 41°C, indicating prioritization of heat shock response (HSR) and homeostatic disruption. At the cold end (17–22°C) homeostatic disruption was visible through incrementally increasing energetic expenses to fuel basal maintenance costs, but no Hsp70 overexpression occurred. TMMR, TSMR and TAS proved to be reliable metrics, similar to the traditional energetic key parameters MMR, SMR and AS, to determine a specific aerobic performance window for the sluggish bottom dwelling species H. scabra. In addition, the linkage between respiration physiology and molecular defense mechanisms showed valuable analytical synergies in terms of mechanistic prioritization as response to thermal stress. Overall, this study will help to define lethal temperatures for aquaculture and to predict the effects of environmental stress, such as ocean warming, in H. scabra.

    Rapid land-use change in the tropics causes dramatic losses in biodiversity and associated functions. In Sumatra, Indonesia, lowland rainforest has mainly been transformed by smallholders into oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) monocultures, interspersed with jungle rubber (rubber agroforests) and a few forest remnants. In two regions of the Jambi province, we conducted point counts in 32 plots of four different land-use types (lowland rainforest, jungle rubber, rubber plantation and oil palm plantation) as well as in 16 nearby homegardens, representing a small-scale, traditional agricultural system. We analysed total bird abundance and bird abundance in feeding guilds, as well as species richness per point count visit, per plot, and per land-use system, to unveil the conservation importance and functional responses of birds in the different land-use types. In total, we identified 71 species from 24 families. Across the different land-use types, abundance did not significantly differ, but both species richness per visit and per plot were reduced in plantations. Feeding guild abundances between land-use types were variable, but homegardens were dominated by omnivores and granivores, and frugivorous birds were absent from monoculture rubber and oil palm. Jungle rubber played an important role in harbouring forest bird species and frugivores. Homegardens turned out to be of minor importance for conserving birds due to their low sizes, although collectively, they are used by many bird species. Changes in functional composition with land-use conversion may affect important ecosystem functions such as biological pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal. In conclusion, maintaining forest cover, including degraded forest and jungle rubber, is of utmost importance to the conservation of functional and taxonomic bird diversity.

    We study the local seismicity in East Java around the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex that is connected via the Watukosek Fault System, to the spectacular Lusi eruption site. Lusi is a sediment-hosted hydrothermal system which has been erupting since 2006. It is fed by both mantellic and hydrothermal fluids, rising and mixing with the thermogenic gases and other fluids from shallower sedimentary formations. During a period of 24 months, we observe 156 micro-seismic earthquakes with local magnitudes ranging from ML0.5 to ML1.9, within our network. The events predominantly nucleate at depths of 8–13 km below the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex. Despite the geological evidence of active tectonic deformation and faulting observed at the surface, practically no seismicity is observed in the sedimentary basin hosting Lusi. Although we cannot entirely rule out artifacts due to an increased detection threshold in the sedimentary basin, the deficit in significant seismicity suggests aseismic deformation beneath Lusi due to the large amount of fluids that may lubricate the fault system. An analysis of focal mechanisms of nine selected events around the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex indicates predominantly strike-slip faulting activity in the region SW of Lusi. This type of activity is consistent with observable features such as fault escarpment, river deviation and railroad deformation; suggesting that the Watukosek fault system extends from the volcanic complex towards the NE of Java. Our results point out that the tectonic deformation of the region is characterized by a segmented fault system being part of a broader damage zone, rather than localized along a distinct fault plane.     Abstract Behavioural events that are important for understanding sociobiology and movement ecology are often rare, transient and localised, but can occur at spatially distant sites e.g. territorial incursions and co‐locating individuals. Existing animal tracking technologies, capable of detecting such events, are limited by one or more of: battery life; data resolution; location accuracy; data security; ability to co‐locate individuals both spatially and temporally. Technology that at least partly resolves these limitations would be advantageous. European badgers (Meles meles L.), present a challenging test‐bed, with extra‐group paternity (apparent from genotyping) contradicting established views on rigid group territoriality with little social‐group mixing. In a proof of concept study we assess the utility of a fully automated active‐radio‐frequency‐identification (aRFID) system combining badger‐borne aRFID‐tags with static, wirelessly‐networked, aRFID‐detector base‐stations to record badger co‐locations at setts (burrows) and near notional border latrines. We summarise the time badgers spent co‐locating within and between social‐groups, applying network analysis to provide evidence of co‐location based community structure, at both these scales. The aRFID system co‐located animals within 31.5 m (adjustable) of base‐stations. Efficient radio transmission between aRFIDs and base‐stations enables a 20 g tag to last for 2–5 years (depending on transmission interval). Data security was high (data stored off tag), with remote access capability. Badgers spent most co‐location time with members of their own social‐groups at setts; remaining co‐location time was divided evenly between intra‐ and inter‐social‐group co‐locations near latrines and inter‐social‐group co‐locations at setts. Network analysis showed that 20–100% of tracked badgers engaged in inter‐social‐group mixing per week, with evidence of trans‐border super‐groups, that is, badgers frequently transgressed notional territorial borders. aRFID occupies a distinct niche amongst established tracking technologies. We validated the utility of aRFID to identify co‐locations, social‐structure and inter‐group mixing within a wild badger population, leading us to refute the conventional view that badgers (social‐groups) are territorial and to question management strategies, for controlling bovine TB, based on this model. Ultimately aRFID proved a versatile system capable of identifying social‐structure at the landscape scale, operating for years and suitable for use with a range of species.

    Abstract. The Spermonde Archipelago, off the coast of southwest Sulawesi, consists of more than 100 small islands and hundreds of shallow-water reef areas. Most of the islands are bordered by coral reefs that grew in the past in response to paleo relative sea-level changes. Remnants of these reefs are preserved today in the form of fossil microatolls. In this study, we report the elevation, age, and paleo relative sea-level estimates derived from fossil microatolls surveyed in five islands of the Spermonde Archipelago. We describe 24 new sea-level index points, and we compare our dataset with both previously published proxies and with relative sea-level predictions from a set of 54 glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models, using different assumptions on both ice melting histories and mantle structure and viscosity. We use our new data and models to discuss Late Holocene (0–6 ka) relative sea-level changes in our study area and their implications in terms of modern relative sea-level estimates in the broader South and Southeast Asia region.

    Polygamy is common in Africa, and is blamed for negative outcomes. I use DHS data to test nine hypotheses about its prevalence and decline. First, historical inequality better predicts polygamy today than current inequality. Second, greater female involvement in agriculture reduces polygamy. Third, the slave trade predicts polygamy, but not robustly. Fourth, modern female education does not reduce polygamy. Colonial schooling does. Fifth, economic growth is weakly correlated with polygamy. Sixth and seventh, rainfall shocks and war increase polygamy, though their effects are small. Eighth, polygamy varies smoothly over borders, national bans notwithstanding. Finally, falling child mortality has reduced polygamy.

    Indonesia is a tsunami prone area, having been hit by 6 events within the last 6 years: The Christmas tsunami 26 December 2004 in Aceh (earthquake Mw 9.2) as the biggest in this decade, Nias 28 March 2005 (earthquake Mw 8.7), South Java 17 July 2006 (earthquake Mw 7.7), Bengkulu 12 September 2007 (earthquake Mw 7.7 8.4), Toli-toli Northern Sulawesi 17 November 2008 (earthquake Mw 7.6) and Manokwari Papua 4 January 2009 (earthquake Mw 7.3 7.6). Many scientists (in Indonesia and from other countries) have been working on investigating, simulating and analysing those events using numerical tsunami modelling tools, which are available as open-source/free-ware or even commercial-ware. Many numerical methods have been applied and are represented in these codes (Finite Difference, Finite Element, and Finite Volume). Gridding methods such as structured and unstructured non-adaptive have been applied.Since 11 November 2008, Indonesia has a sophisticated tsunami early warning system (Ina-TEWS) based on pre-computed simulation results for the database. An unstructured finite element based code developed at Alfred Wegener Institute (TsunAWI) as the official (operational) GITEWS tsunami model and an extended version of TUNAMI (finite difference) model as the contribution by Institut Teknologi Bandung are employed for this purpose as well as for creating hazard maps. Even though both tsunami models have been well tested and validated, they are still having some efficiency problems. TsunAWI suffers from high computational costs, while TUNAMI cannot be easily refined arbitrarily.To overcome those problems, we conduct further development in unstructured finite element tsunami modeling using adaptive mesh refinement. Similarly to TsunAWI, the new TsunaFLASH code uses unstructured finite elements with conforming (P1) and non-conforming (P1nc) elements. The objective of developing TsunaFLASH is to improve computational efficiency by avoiding unnecessary calculations and saving computer memory. amatos (Adaptive Mesh generator for ATmosphere and Ocean Simulation) by Behrens et al. (2006) is employed for generating adaptive triangular meshes.In addition to the numerical development, the acquisition of detailed high-resolution bathymetry and topography is a pre-requisite for obtaining accurate and reliable modeling results.
