    Ants, like many other animals, use visual memory to follow extended routes through complex environments, but it is unknown how their small brains implement this capability. The mushroom body neuropils have been identified as a crucial memory circuit in the insect brain, but their function has mostly been explored for simple olfactory association tasks. We show that a spiking neural model of this circuit originally developed to describe fruitfly (Drosophila melanogaster) olfactory association, can also account for the ability of desert ants (Cataglyphis velox) to rapidly learn visual routes through complex natural environments. We further demonstrate that abstracting the key computational principles of this circuit, which include one-shot learning of sparse codes, enables the theoretical storage capacity of the ant mushroom body to be estimated at hundreds of independent images. Author Summary We propose a model based directly on insect neuroanatomy that is able to account for the route following capabilities of ants. We show this mushroom body circuit has the potential to store a large number of images, generated in a realistic simulation of an ant traversing a route, and to distinguish previously stored images from highly similar images generated when looking in the wrong direction. It can thus control successful recapitulation of routes under ecologically valid test conditions.

    Intratumor heterogeneity is a major challenge in cancer treatment. To decipher patterns of chromosomal heterogeneity, we analyzed six colorectal cancer cell lines by multiplex interphase FISH (miFISH). The mismatch-repair-deficient cell lines DLD-1 and HCT116 had the most stable copy numbers, whereas aneuploid cell lines (HT-29, SW480, SW620 and H508) displayed a higher degree of instability. We subsequently assessed the clonal evolution of single cells in two colorectal carcinoma cell lines, SW480 and HT-29, which both have aneuploid karyotypes but different degrees of chromosomal instability. The clonal compositions of the single cell-derived daughter lines, as assessed by miFISH, differed for HT-29 and SW480. Daughters of HT-29 were stable, clonal, with little heterogeneity. Daughters of SW480 were more heterogeneous, with the single cell-derived daughter lines separating into two distinct populations with different ploidy (hyper-diploid and near-triploid), morphology, gene expression and tumorigenicity. To better understand the evolutionary trajectory for the two SW480 populations, we constructed phylogenetic trees which showed ongoing instability in the daughter lines. When analyzing the evolutionary development over time, most single cell-derived daughter lines maintained their major clonal pattern, with the exception of one daughter line that showed a switch involving a loss of APC. Our meticulous analysis of the clonal evolution and composition of these colorectal cancer models shows that all chromosomes are subject to segregation errors, however, specific net genomic imbalances are maintained. Karyotype evolution is driven by the necessity to arrive at and maintain a specific plateau of chromosomal copy numbers as the drivers of carcinogenesis.

    International audience; In wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, of Armorican rivers, precocious maturity occurred at <5% at age 0+ (males only). At 1+ (in both sexes) the percentage occurrence varied between years and stretches of river. Spawning marks on scales of smolts and anadromous adults confirmed that such fish smoltify after spawning. From back-calculation from scales of R. Scorff salmon it was found that: (1) mature parr were larger than immature fish at 1+ in autumn and at smolting; (2) mature 1+ parr had been intermediate in length between upper and lower modal group fish in their first autumn. It is suggested that in western France a holobiotic cycle for the Atlantic salmon can occur before the amphibiotic one as an adaptive strategy.

    Abstract. The Greenland ice sheet is one of the largest contributors to global meansea-level rise today and is expected to continue to lose mass as the Arcticcontinues to warm. The two predominant mass loss mechanisms are increasedsurface meltwater run-off and mass loss associated with the retreat ofmarine-terminating outlet glaciers. In this paper we use a large ensemble ofGreenland ice sheet models forced by output from a representative subset ofthe Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) global climate models to project ice sheet changes and sea-level risecontributions over the 21st century. The simulations are part of theIce Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP6 (ISMIP6). We estimate thesea-level contribution together with uncertainties due to future climateforcing, ice sheet model formulations and ocean forcing for the twogreenhouse gas concentration scenarios RCP8.5 and RCP2.6. The resultsindicate that the Greenland ice sheet will continue to lose mass in bothscenarios until 2100, with contributions of 90±50 and 32±17 mm to sea-level rise for RCP8.5 and RCP2.6, respectively. The largestmass loss is expected from the south-west of Greenland, which is governed bysurface mass balance changes, continuing what is already observed today.Because the contributions are calculated against an unforced controlexperiment, these numbers do not include any committed mass loss, i.e. massloss that would occur over the coming century if the climate forcingremained constant. Under RCP8.5 forcing, ice sheet model uncertaintyexplains an ensemble spread of 40 mm, while climate model uncertainty andocean forcing uncertainty account for a spread of 36 and 19 mm,respectively.     AbstractA trade‐off between current and future fitness potentially explains variation in life‐history strategies. A proposed mechanism behind this is parasite‐mediated reproductive costs: individuals that allocate more resources to reproduction have fewer to allocate to defence against parasites, reducing future fitness. We examined how reproduction influenced faecal egg counts (FEC) of strongyle nematodes using data collected between 1989 and 2008 from a wild population of Soay sheep in the St. Kilda archipelago, Scotland (741 individuals). Increased reproduction was associated with increased FEC during the lambing season: females that gave birth, and particularly those that weaned a lamb, had higher FEC than females that failed to reproduce. Structural equation modelling revealed future reproductive costs: a positive effect of reproduction on spring FEC and a negative effect on summer body weight were negatively associated with overwinter survival. Overall, we provide evidence that parasite resistance and body weight are important mediators of survival costs of reproduction.

    Abstract In sea cage farming, fish are exposed to seasonal variations of water temperature, and these variations can differ from one location to another. A small increase in water temperature does not only stimulate growth of the fish (until an optimal level) but also lowers dissolved oxygen concentration in water. Dissolved oxygen may then become a rearing constraint during the production cycle if the oxygen requirement of fish is higher than the supply. The impact of this constraint on production parameters (stocking density of cages and/or batch rotation) and thus on economic profit of a farm will depend on both local thermal regime and growth potential of the fish. Increased growth is one of the most important traits in a breeding objective to increase production capacity and profitability. We used a bioeconomic model of seabass reared in cages to calculate the economic value (EV) of increasing thermal growth coefficient (TGC) by selection in different conditions of average temperature (Tm) and amplitude of temperature variation (Ta). Tm and Ta values were taken from different locations in the eastern and western Mediterranean. Results show that increasing TGC has two consequences: (i) fast growing fish reach harvest weight earlier, which increases the number of batches that can be produced per year, and (ii) fast growing fish have higher daily feed intake and, consequently, higher daily oxygen consumption. To balance the oxygen demand and availability in a cage, a farmer might have to reduce the average stocking density, resulting in fewer fish produced per batch. Consequently, EV of TGC is positive when Tm is 19.5 °C or 21 °C, when an increase in number of batches produced compensates for the decrease in stocking density. EV of TGC is negative or null in areas where Tm is closer to 18 °C because the increase in number of batches produced cannot compensate for the decrease in stocking density. Our results show, for the first time, the importance of variation in ambient temperatures for breeding programs in fish. Statement of relevance The economic impact of improving growth rate in sea cage farming system depends on temperature. This result is important for the development of breeding objectives maximizing economic return in fish breeding programs.

    Models used to investigate the relationship between biodiversity change and vector-borne disease risk often do not explicitly include the vector; they instead rely on a frequency-dependent transmission function to represent vector dynamics. However, differences between classes of vector (e.g., ticks and insects) can cause discrepancies in epidemiological responses to environmental change. Using a pair of disease models (mosquito- and tick-borne), we simulated substitutive and additive biodiversity change (where noncompetent hosts replaced or were added to competent hosts, respectively), while considering different relationships between vector and host densities. We found important differences between classes of vector, including an increased likelihood of amplified disease risk under additive biodiversity change in mosquito models, driven by higher vector biting rates. We also draw attention to more general phenomena, such as a negative relationship between initial infection prevalence in vectors and likelihood of dilution, and the potential for a rise in density of infected vectors to occur simultaneously with a decline in proportion of infected hosts. This has important implications; the density of infected vectors is the most valid metric for primarily zoonotic infections, while the proportion of infected hosts is more relevant for infections where humans are a primary host.

    International audience; Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN) disease is considered as one of the most serious threats for European sea bass cultured in Mediterranean Sea, with no simple and effective procedures to treat this disease. In this study, 1472 offspring resulting from artificial full factorial mating of western Mediterranean dams with sires from four different wild populations of European sea bass (Northern Atlantic, NAT; Western Mediterranean, WEM; Northern-East Mediterranean, NEM; and Southern-East Mediterranean, SEM) were challenged by experimental infection to W80 betanodavirus strain in order to evaluate genetic variations for VNN resistance among populations and genetic correlations between VNN resistance and production traits. The results showed a large variation of VNN resistance between the four populations tested as well as between sire families within strain. The survivals between pure wild populations SEM, NEM, WEM and NAT were estimated at 99%, 94%, 62%, and 44%, respectively. A moderate intra-population heritability of VNN resistance, calculated based on liability scale with sire model, was recorded for the first time in European sea bass (h2 u =0.26 ± 0.11). Finally, moderate negative genetic correlations between VNN resistance and daily growth coefficient (DGC) and body weight (BW) were also demonstrated (−0.28 ± 0.20, −0.35 ± 0.14, respectively) while the genetic correlation between resistance to VNN and fillet adiposity (FA) was weakly negative and not significant (−0.13 ± 0.19). These results give good prospects of selective breeding of European sea bass for improved resistance to VNN disease.

    Seasonal variations in fatty acid composition in several tissues of a 1-year-old population of giant lion's-paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus were analyzed during gonad development. Samples were taken bimonthly from December 1999 to June 2000, a period in which gonad development was occurring. Fatty acid accumulation in neutral and polar lipids of the female gonad was concomitant to the gonad development and presented a maximum in June. Among essential fatty acids, a specific accumulation was observed only for 20:5n − 3 in the female gonad, as suggested by an increase in its proportion in the neutral and the polar fractions. However, no specific accumulation was observed for 22:6n − 3, as its proportion remained relatively constant in both fractions. We suggest that a specific increase of 22:6n − 3 is not necessary during gametogenesis because its proportion was high enough for reproductive purposes (20-30%). Although some data suggest a partial mobilization of polyunsaturated fatty acids from the muscle and digestive gland to the female gonad during gonad development, the main supply came directly from the diet. The maximum increase in total and specific fatty acids in the digestive gland occurred in April and was maintained in June. These changes reflect either a higher lipid availability of the food, or the beginning of storage process in the digestive gland. However, in the female gonad, the maximum increase was observed in June, whereas gonad development and spawning were observed from April. It is suggested that different patterns of lipid accumulation in the first (April) and second (June) maturation processes could be related to the reproductive cycle of this species, which exhibits an initial facultative maturation during spring and the main reproductive activity during summer.

    Ants, like many other animals, use visual memory to follow extended routes through complex environments, but it is unknown how their small brains implement this capability. The mushroom body neuropils have been identified as a crucial memory circuit in the insect brain, but their function has mostly been explored for simple olfactory association tasks. We show that a spiking neural model of this circuit originally developed to describe fruitfly (Drosophila melanogaster) olfactory association, can also account for the ability of desert ants (Cataglyphis velox) to rapidly learn visual routes through complex natural environments. We further demonstrate that abstracting the key computational principles of this circuit, which include one-shot learning of sparse codes, enables the theoretical storage capacity of the ant mushroom body to be estimated at hundreds of independent images. Author Summary We propose a model based directly on insect neuroanatomy that is able to account for the route following capabilities of ants. We show this mushroom body circuit has the potential to store a large number of images, generated in a realistic simulation of an ant traversing a route, and to distinguish previously stored images from highly similar images generated when looking in the wrong direction. It can thus control successful recapitulation of routes under ecologically valid test conditions.

    Intratumor heterogeneity is a major challenge in cancer treatment. To decipher patterns of chromosomal heterogeneity, we analyzed six colorectal cancer cell lines by multiplex interphase FISH (miFISH). The mismatch-repair-deficient cell lines DLD-1 and HCT116 had the most stable copy numbers, whereas aneuploid cell lines (HT-29, SW480, SW620 and H508) displayed a higher degree of instability. We subsequently assessed the clonal evolution of single cells in two colorectal carcinoma cell lines, SW480 and HT-29, which both have aneuploid karyotypes but different degrees of chromosomal instability. The clonal compositions of the single cell-derived daughter lines, as assessed by miFISH, differed for HT-29 and SW480. Daughters of HT-29 were stable, clonal, with little heterogeneity. Daughters of SW480 were more heterogeneous, with the single cell-derived daughter lines separating into two distinct populations with different ploidy (hyper-diploid and near-triploid), morphology, gene expression and tumorigenicity. To better understand the evolutionary trajectory for the two SW480 populations, we constructed phylogenetic trees which showed ongoing instability in the daughter lines. When analyzing the evolutionary development over time, most single cell-derived daughter lines maintained their major clonal pattern, with the exception of one daughter line that showed a switch involving a loss of APC. Our meticulous analysis of the clonal evolution and composition of these colorectal cancer models shows that all chromosomes are subject to segregation errors, however, specific net genomic imbalances are maintained. Karyotype evolution is driven by the necessity to arrive at and maintain a specific plateau of chromosomal copy numbers as the drivers of carcinogenesis.

    International audience; In wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, of Armorican rivers, precocious maturity occurred at <5% at age 0+ (males only). At 1+ (in both sexes) the percentage occurrence varied between years and stretches of river. Spawning marks on scales of smolts and anadromous adults confirmed that such fish smoltify after spawning. From back-calculation from scales of R. Scorff salmon it was found that: (1) mature parr were larger than immature fish at 1+ in autumn and at smolting; (2) mature 1+ parr had been intermediate in length between upper and lower modal group fish in their first autumn. It is suggested that in western France a holobiotic cycle for the Atlantic salmon can occur before the amphibiotic one as an adaptive strategy.

    Abstract. The Greenland ice sheet is one of the largest contributors to global meansea-level rise today and is expected to continue to lose mass as the Arcticcontinues to warm. The two predominant mass loss mechanisms are increasedsurface meltwater run-off and mass loss associated with the retreat ofmarine-terminating outlet glaciers. In this paper we use a large ensemble ofGreenland ice sheet models forced by output from a representative subset ofthe Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) global climate models to project ice sheet changes and sea-level risecontributions over the 21st century. The simulations are part of theIce Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP6 (ISMIP6). We estimate thesea-level contribution together with uncertainties due to future climateforcing, ice sheet model formulations and ocean forcing for the twogreenhouse gas concentration scenarios RCP8.5 and RCP2.6. The resultsindicate that the Greenland ice sheet will continue to lose mass in bothscenarios until 2100, with contributions of 90±50 and 32±17 mm to sea-level rise for RCP8.5 and RCP2.6, respectively. The largestmass loss is expected from the south-west of Greenland, which is governed bysurface mass balance changes, continuing what is already observed today.Because the contributions are calculated against an unforced controlexperiment, these numbers do not include any committed mass loss, i.e. massloss that would occur over the coming century if the climate forcingremained constant. Under RCP8.5 forcing, ice sheet model uncertaintyexplains an ensemble spread of 40 mm, while climate model uncertainty andocean forcing uncertainty account for a spread of 36 and 19 mm,respectively.     AbstractA trade‐off between current and future fitness potentially explains variation in life‐history strategies. A proposed mechanism behind this is parasite‐mediated reproductive costs: individuals that allocate more resources to reproduction have fewer to allocate to defence against parasites, reducing future fitness. We examined how reproduction influenced faecal egg counts (FEC) of strongyle nematodes using data collected between 1989 and 2008 from a wild population of Soay sheep in the St. Kilda archipelago, Scotland (741 individuals). Increased reproduction was associated with increased FEC during the lambing season: females that gave birth, and particularly those that weaned a lamb, had higher FEC than females that failed to reproduce. Structural equation modelling revealed future reproductive costs: a positive effect of reproduction on spring FEC and a negative effect on summer body weight were negatively associated with overwinter survival. Overall, we provide evidence that parasite resistance and body weight are important mediators of survival costs of reproduction.

    Abstract In sea cage farming, fish are exposed to seasonal variations of water temperature, and these variations can differ from one location to another. A small increase in water temperature does not only stimulate growth of the fish (until an optimal level) but also lowers dissolved oxygen concentration in water. Dissolved oxygen may then become a rearing constraint during the production cycle if the oxygen requirement of fish is higher than the supply. The impact of this constraint on production parameters (stocking density of cages and/or batch rotation) and thus on economic profit of a farm will depend on both local thermal regime and growth potential of the fish. Increased growth is one of the most important traits in a breeding objective to increase production capacity and profitability. We used a bioeconomic model of seabass reared in cages to calculate the economic value (EV) of increasing thermal growth coefficient (TGC) by selection in different conditions of average temperature (Tm) and amplitude of temperature variation (Ta). Tm and Ta values were taken from different locations in the eastern and western Mediterranean. Results show that increasing TGC has two consequences: (i) fast growing fish reach harvest weight earlier, which increases the number of batches that can be produced per year, and (ii) fast growing fish have higher daily feed intake and, consequently, higher daily oxygen consumption. To balance the oxygen demand and availability in a cage, a farmer might have to reduce the average stocking density, resulting in fewer fish produced per batch. Consequently, EV of TGC is positive when Tm is 19.5 °C or 21 °C, when an increase in number of batches produced compensates for the decrease in stocking density. EV of TGC is negative or null in areas where Tm is closer to 18 °C because the increase in number of batches produced cannot compensate for the decrease in stocking density. Our results show, for the first time, the importance of variation in ambient temperatures for breeding programs in fish. Statement of relevance The economic impact of improving growth rate in sea cage farming system depends on temperature. This result is important for the development of breeding objectives maximizing economic return in fish breeding programs.

    Models used to investigate the relationship between biodiversity change and vector-borne disease risk often do not explicitly include the vector; they instead rely on a frequency-dependent transmission function to represent vector dynamics. However, differences between classes of vector (e.g., ticks and insects) can cause discrepancies in epidemiological responses to environmental change. Using a pair of disease models (mosquito- and tick-borne), we simulated substitutive and additive biodiversity change (where noncompetent hosts replaced or were added to competent hosts, respectively), while considering different relationships between vector and host densities. We found important differences between classes of vector, including an increased likelihood of amplified disease risk under additive biodiversity change in mosquito models, driven by higher vector biting rates. We also draw attention to more general phenomena, such as a negative relationship between initial infection prevalence in vectors and likelihood of dilution, and the potential for a rise in density of infected vectors to occur simultaneously with a decline in proportion of infected hosts. This has important implications; the density of infected vectors is the most valid metric for primarily zoonotic infections, while the proportion of infected hosts is more relevant for infections where humans are a primary host.

    International audience; Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN) disease is considered as one of the most serious threats for European sea bass cultured in Mediterranean Sea, with no simple and effective procedures to treat this disease. In this study, 1472 offspring resulting from artificial full factorial mating of western Mediterranean dams with sires from four different wild populations of European sea bass (Northern Atlantic, NAT; Western Mediterranean, WEM; Northern-East Mediterranean, NEM; and Southern-East Mediterranean, SEM) were challenged by experimental infection to W80 betanodavirus strain in order to evaluate genetic variations for VNN resistance among populations and genetic correlations between VNN resistance and production traits. The results showed a large variation of VNN resistance between the four populations tested as well as between sire families within strain. The survivals between pure wild populations SEM, NEM, WEM and NAT were estimated at 99%, 94%, 62%, and 44%, respectively. A moderate intra-population heritability of VNN resistance, calculated based on liability scale with sire model, was recorded for the first time in European sea bass (h2 u =0.26 ± 0.11). Finally, moderate negative genetic correlations between VNN resistance and daily growth coefficient (DGC) and body weight (BW) were also demonstrated (−0.28 ± 0.20, −0.35 ± 0.14, respectively) while the genetic correlation between resistance to VNN and fillet adiposity (FA) was weakly negative and not significant (−0.13 ± 0.19). These results give good prospects of selective breeding of European sea bass for improved resistance to VNN disease.

    Seasonal variations in fatty acid composition in several tissues of a 1-year-old population of giant lion's-paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus were analyzed during gonad development. Samples were taken bimonthly from December 1999 to June 2000, a period in which gonad development was occurring. Fatty acid accumulation in neutral and polar lipids of the female gonad was concomitant to the gonad development and presented a maximum in June. Among essential fatty acids, a specific accumulation was observed only for 20:5n − 3 in the female gonad, as suggested by an increase in its proportion in the neutral and the polar fractions. However, no specific accumulation was observed for 22:6n − 3, as its proportion remained relatively constant in both fractions. We suggest that a specific increase of 22:6n − 3 is not necessary during gametogenesis because its proportion was high enough for reproductive purposes (20-30%). Although some data suggest a partial mobilization of polyunsaturated fatty acids from the muscle and digestive gland to the female gonad during gonad development, the main supply came directly from the diet. The maximum increase in total and specific fatty acids in the digestive gland occurred in April and was maintained in June. These changes reflect either a higher lipid availability of the food, or the beginning of storage process in the digestive gland. However, in the female gonad, the maximum increase was observed in June, whereas gonad development and spawning were observed from April. It is suggested that different patterns of lipid accumulation in the first (April) and second (June) maturation processes could be related to the reproductive cycle of this species, which exhibits an initial facultative maturation during spring and the main reproductive activity during summer.
