Models presented here of shallow-marine siliciclastic deposition show that the widths of depth-defined regions differ markedly in response to sea-level change. These models add to recent studies that have emphasized the highly specific response of habitat area to sea-level change. Collectively, these studies indicate that a particular bathymetric zone on a particular margin may vary substantially in area during a sea-level change, while other such zones and margins may experience little or even opposite responses. In the models presented here, intermediate- depth and deep-water regions tend to show sinusoidal variations in width, with widening during relative falls in sea level and narrowing during relative rises. The shallow-water region displays markedly non-sinusoidal change and is consistently characterized by abrupt widening at the beginning of the highstand systems tract and an equally abrupt narrowing at the onset of sea-level fall at the beginning of the falling-stage systems tract. These onshore-offshore differences in how width and area change with sea level may explain why taxa in shallow- water settings tend to be more abundant, eurytopic, and widespread than those in deeper-water settings. Likewise, these models suggest that the evolution of novelty in nearshore habitats may be a response to wide variation in shallow-marine area during sea-level change. A unique aspect of ODP Leg 186 was the installation of two permanent borehole geophysical observatories at the deep-sea terrace along the Japan Trench. The Neogene subsidence history of the forearc was documented from both Sites 1150 and 1151, and Quaternary to middle Miocene (16 Ma) sediments represent a nearly continuous stratigraphic sequence including numerous ash records, especially during the past 9 m.y. Diatoms are found in most samples in variable abundance and in a moderately well preserved state throughout the sequence. The assemblages are characterized consistently by age-diagnostic species of Denticulopsis and Neodenticula found in regions of high surface water productivity typical of middle to high latitudes. The Neogene North Pacific diatom zonation divides the Miocene to Quaternary sequences fundamentally well, except that the latest Miocene through early Pliocene Thalassiosira oestrupii Subzone is not applicable. Miocene and late Pliocene through Pleistocene diatom datum levels that have been proven to be of great stratigraphic utility in the North Pacific Ocean appear to be nearly isochronous within the level of resolution constrained by core catcher sample spacing. The taxonomy and stratigraphy of previously described species determined to be useful across the Miocene/Pliocene boundary have been investigated on the basis of the evolutionary changes within the Thalassiosira trifulta group. The biostratigraphically important forms belonging to the genus Thalassiosira have been illustrated with scanning electron micrographs. A marked change in chemical (and mineralogical) character is shown at the end of the Early Miocene Epoch which relates to tectonic events and associated changes in sedimentary regime. Enrichment in the contents of such elements as Mg, Cr and Ni compared with average values for fine-grained sediments occurs throughout the sequence and is particularly marked in the upper group of samples. A basic-ultrabasic provenance is suggested - the Oman ophiolites.Leaching with combined acid-reducing agent indicated typical lithogenous-character ordering for the elements and emphasised the enrichment of Mg, Cr, Ni (and Li, Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe and Ti) over values for near-shore muds and terrigenous material.Factor analysis on the bulk chemical data identifies the main lithogenous and biogenous components, subdividing the latter. It separates the upper and lower group of chemically dissimilar sediments and delineates a Mn-hydroxide phase. It also shows the essentially independent roles of Na, Ba and P. Samples display compositional overlap with respective phases in websterites, while clinopyroxene isotope systematics reveal similarities with both websteritic and metasomatic clinopyroxene in peridotites from the same kimberlite, in addition to Muskox and Jericho kimberlites. All lithologies may represent the products of mixing between EM1 mantle, relic Proterozoic enriched mantle and HIMU carbonatitic fluid. Equilibrium melts calculated from clinopyroxene trace element data using experimental distribution coefficients for feasible proto kimberlitic melts yield a range of metasomatic agents. Conclusion on the carbonate bearing nature of the metasomatism is based on the presence of a HIMU isotopic signature and results obtained from thermodynamic modeling using the Deep Earth Water model. Modelling was carried out with three fluid compositions; asthenospheric, eclogitic and kimberlitic. Our results suggest mineral compositions analogous to megacrysts cannot be produced by metasomatism of mantle peridotite by carbonate-free hydrous fluids. Isotope systematics argue against a strictly cognate relationship between megacrysts and their host kimberlite, instead suggesting megacrysts and websterites may represent products of regional metasomatism by carbonatitic HIMU fluids shortly predating kimberlite magmatism.

The primary diagnostic for recognizing prehistoric typhoon-deposited sand layers in the geologic record are sharp upper and lower contacts between coarser-grained transported sand layers and finer-grained in-situ sediments. In this first paleotempestology study in Thailand, cores from two low-energy settings on the Gulf of Thailand coast - a coastal marsh near Cha-am and beach ridge plain swales near Kui Buri - reveal geologic evidence of up to 19 typhoon strikes within the last 8000 years. The sand layers have sharp upper and lower contacts with enclosing finer sediments. Some sand layers also contain other evidence of a sudden powerful landward-directed surge of ocean water, including gravel-sized clasts, offshore foraminifera, abundant shell fragments, plant debris and mud rip-up clasts. Sand layers record eleven typhoon strikes at Cha-am, ranging in age from AD 1952 to 7575 cal. yr. BP, and eight typhoon strikes at Kui Buri, ranging in age from 4075 to 7740 cal. yr. BP. Bayesian age?depth models, derived from eight AMS radiocarbon dates, suggest that the frequency of typhoon strikes was 2-5 times greater from 3900 to 7800 cal. yr. BP compared to 0-3900 cal. yr. BP. Possible explanations for this variability in the typhoon record are that typhoons were more frequent and/or more intense in Southeast Asia in the mid-Holocene because of climatic changes associated with the Mid-Holocene Warm Period or that the record reflects site sensitivity changes resulting from a mid-Holocene sea-level highstand. The preliminary finding of a possible link between warmer conditions and a greater frequency of intense typhoon strikes could have important societal implications, given possible consequences of ongoing global warming. We report here a global network of LIG sea-surface temperatures (SST) obtained from various published temperature proxies (e.g. faunal/floral plankton assemblages, Mg/Ca ratios of calcareous organisms, and alkenone UK'37). Each reconstruction is averaged across the LIG (anomalies relative to 1981-2010), corrected for ocean drift and with varying seasonality (189 annual, 99 December-February, and 92 June-August). Because of local δ18O seawater changes, uncertainty in the age models of marine cores, and differences in sampling resolution and/or sedimentation rates, we do not attempt to resolve changes within the LIG. Therefore, and to avoid bias towards individual LIG SSTs based on only a single (and potentially erroneous) measurement or a single interpolated data point, we report temperatures averaged across the entire LIG. The global dataset provides a remarkably coherent pattern of higher SST increases at polar latitudes than in the tropics, with comparable estimates between different SST proxies. Models presented here of shallow-marine siliciclastic deposition show that the widths of depth-defined regions differ markedly in response to sea-level change. These models add to recent studies that have emphasized the highly specific response of habitat area to sea-level change. Collectively, these studies indicate that a particular bathymetric zone on a particular margin may vary substantially in area during a sea-level change, while other such zones and margins may experience little or even opposite responses. In the models presented here, intermediate- depth and deep-water regions tend to show sinusoidal variations in width, with widening during relative falls in sea level and narrowing during relative rises. The shallow-water region displays markedly non-sinusoidal change and is consistently characterized by abrupt widening at the beginning of the highstand systems tract and an equally abrupt narrowing at the onset of sea-level fall at the beginning of the falling-stage systems tract. These onshore-offshore differences in how width and area change with sea level may explain why taxa in shallow- water settings tend to be more abundant, eurytopic, and widespread than those in deeper-water settings. Likewise, these models suggest that the evolution of novelty in nearshore habitats may be a response to wide variation in shallow-marine area during sea-level change. A unique aspect of ODP Leg 186 was the installation of two permanent borehole geophysical observatories at the deep-sea terrace along the Japan Trench. The Neogene subsidence history of the forearc was documented from both Sites 1150 and 1151, and Quaternary to middle Miocene (16 Ma) sediments represent a nearly continuous stratigraphic sequence including numerous ash records, especially during the past 9 m.y. Diatoms are found in most samples in variable abundance and in a moderately well preserved state throughout the sequence. The assemblages are characterized consistently by age-diagnostic species of Denticulopsis and Neodenticula found in regions of high surface water productivity typical of middle to high latitudes. The Neogene North Pacific diatom zonation divides the Miocene to Quaternary sequences fundamentally well, except that the latest Miocene through early Pliocene Thalassiosira oestrupii Subzone is not applicable. Miocene and late Pliocene through Pleistocene diatom datum levels that have been proven to be of great stratigraphic utility in the North Pacific Ocean appear to be nearly isochronous within the level of resolution constrained by core catcher sample spacing. The taxonomy and stratigraphy of previously described species determined to be useful across the Miocene/Pliocene boundary have been investigated on the basis of the evolutionary changes within the Thalassiosira trifulta group. The biostratigraphically important forms belonging to the genus Thalassiosira have been illustrated with scanning electron micrographs. A marked change in chemical (and mineralogical) character is shown at the end of the Early Miocene Epoch which relates to tectonic events and associated changes in sedimentary regime. Samples display compositional overlap with respective phases in websterites, while clinopyroxene isotope systematics reveal similarities with both websteritic and metasomatic clinopyroxene in peridotites from the same kimberlite, in addition to Muskox and Jericho kimberlites. All lithologies may represent the products of mixing between EM1 mantle, relic Proterozoic enriched mantle and HIMU carbonatitic fluid. Equilibrium melts calculated from clinopyroxene trace element data using experimental distribution coefficients for feasible proto kimberlitic melts yield a range of metasomatic agents. Conclusion on the carbonate bearing nature of the metasomatism is based on the presence of a HIMU isotopic signature and results obtained from thermodynamic modeling using the Deep Earth Water model. Modelling was carried out with three fluid compositions; asthenospheric, eclogitic and kimberlitic. Our results suggest mineral compositions analogous to megacrysts cannot be produced by metasomatism of mantle peridotite by carbonate-free hydrous fluids. Isotope systematics argue against a strictly cognate relationship between megacrysts and their host kimberlite, instead suggesting megacrysts and websterites may represent products of regional metasomatism by carbonatitic HIMU fluids shortly predating kimberlite magmatism.

The primary diagnostic for recognizing prehistoric typhoon-deposited sand layers in the geologic record are sharp upper and lower contacts between coarser-grained transported sand layers and finer-grained in-situ sediments. In this first paleotempestology study in Thailand, cores from two low-energy settings on the Gulf of Thailand coast - a coastal marsh near Cha-am and beach ridge plain swales near Kui Buri - reveal geologic evidence of up to 19 typhoon strikes within the last 8000 years. The sand layers have sharp upper and lower contacts with enclosing finer sediments. Some sand layers also contain other evidence of a sudden powerful landward-directed surge of ocean water, including gravel-sized clasts, offshore foraminifera, abundant shell fragments, plant debris and mud rip-up clasts. Sand layers record eleven typhoon strikes at Cha-am, ranging in age from AD 1952 to 7575 cal. yr. BP, and eight typhoon strikes at Kui Buri, ranging in age from 4075 to 7740 cal. yr. BP. Bayesian age?depth models, derived from eight AMS radiocarbon dates, suggest that the frequency of typhoon strikes was 2-5 times greater from 3900 to 7800 cal. yr. BP compared to 0-3900 cal. yr. BP. Possible explanations for this variability in the typhoon record are that typhoons were more frequent and/or more intense in Southeast Asia in the mid-Holocene because of climatic changes associated with the Mid-Holocene Warm Period or that the record reflects site sensitivity changes resulting from a mid-Holocene sea-level highstand. The preliminary finding of a possible link between warmer conditions and a greater frequency of intense typhoon strikes could have important societal implications, given possible consequences of ongoing global warming. We report here a global network of LIG sea-surface temperatures (SST) obtained from various published temperature proxies (e.g. faunal/floral plankton assemblages, Mg/Ca ratios of calcareous organisms, and alkenone UK'37). Each reconstruction is averaged across the LIG (anomalies relative to 1981-2010), corrected for ocean drift and with varying seasonality (189 annual, 99 December-February, and 92 June-August). Because of local δ18O seawater changes, uncertainty in the age models of marine cores, and differences in sampling resolution and/or sedimentation rates, we do not attempt to resolve changes within the LIG. Therefore, and to avoid bias towards individual LIG SSTs based on only a single (and potentially erroneous) measurement or a single interpolated data point, we report temperatures averaged across the entire LIG. The global dataset provides a remarkably coherent pattern of higher SST increases at polar latitudes than in the tropics, with comparable estimates between different SST proxies.
