Tourism is one of the most impacted sectors from the Covid-19 pandemic. The extent of the impact is expected to be particularly severe for tourist destinations where the virus is actively circulating and tourism plays an important role in the economy. With a rich endowment of tourism potential, the Hauts-de-France (HdF) was part of the French regions classified as Covid-19 "red zone" the day after deconfinement (May 11th). The research project THREpiCo addresses the issue of the consequences of this pandemic on both tourism demand and supply. In terms of tourism demand, the project aims at understanding individuals’ perceptions of the region with regard to the Covid-19 epidemic risk and analysing the role of their perceptions in their visit behaviour and revisit intentions. Particular attention will be paid to the individuals’ trust in regional policy-makers and confidence in Covid-19 risk mitigation measures. The changes in demand for trips and individual welfare due to the pandemic will also be explored. In terms of tourism supply, a number of Covid-19 health and safety protocols, combined with related communication strategies, have been implemented, particularly in the commercial accommodation sector, in an effort to restore visitors’ confidence and stimulate demand. Another objective of this project is to investigate the attractiveness of these tools among visitors by estimating the extra amount of money that they would be willing to pay for one night in a hotel establishment. Finally, additional changes are expected to be made in the regional tourism industry in the medium term to strengthen the resilience of the sector. With this in mind, qualitative survey interviews of tourism stakeholders will be carried out with the objective of co-constructing a restructuring plan for the tourism supply organised into different actions (or scenarios). An ex-ante economic valuation of these scenarios will be conducted to support the decision-making process. This research project will be led by a multidisciplinary research team, whose expertise covers all aspects related to the impact analysis of a pandemic on tourism. The team will rely on close collaboration with the diverse tourism-based organisations within the HdF and the original combination of several non-market economic valuation methods, quantitative and qualitative surveys, coupled with the use of secondary data about tourist trips during the last ten years, to provide a broad picture of the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic on tourism activity in the HdF. The expected results are empirical, methodological and operational.

The recent COVID-19 crisis reflected a specificity of nursing homes for the elderly (NHE), both in terms of communication and in terms of managing the health crisis and its effects. This research project aims at studying these specificities along 3 complementary axes. First, we want to understand how the information was constructed to report on mortality rates in the RHE. How was the data collected, reported, aggregated? On a second axis, we aim at building a database (and mapping) of NHE according to the different variables that characterize them (status of NHE (private / public / non-profit), size, territory with differentiated regulations, supervision rate). This data base (which does not exist yet in a consolidated manner in France) will make it possible to cross-reference these data with those on mortality rates. What explanatory factors can we provide for the differences in the mortality rates observed? In a third axis, we seek to understand how, in a particular region (Hauts-de-France in France), the actors have adapted to the COVID-19 crisis in NHE. In the system of actors that had to react, we are of course thinking of the territorial regulators (what were the regulations, financing, and evaluations of the actions put in place?) but also of the NHE staff: how has the staff of these nursing homes been affected by this health crisis?

The EgID (Interactive Democracy for a European Governance) project aims at observing and enriching the relation between European Governance and interactive democracy. EgID is a project of fundamental research designed to analyse interactive-democracy existing processes to understand if, without changing current treaties, they could be an instrument for constructing a European citizenship. In particular, the objective is to create an Observatory of Interactive Democracy in Europe. Ongoing and future initiatives will be observed in real time and theoretical tools for analyzing new kinds of initiatives will be proposed. Therefore, the project is focused both on Europe and democracy. Regarding Europe, it places itself in the perspective of an evolution of Europe towards a complete political society. Regarding democracy, the project focuses on different forms and expressions of interactive democracy. The fundamental research will be completed by an action research. The latter will carry out several mechanisms of simulation and experimentation in order to better understand how to progress in the field of interactive democracy, which is still not completely formalized. It is planned to design and activate different kinds of citizens’ assemblies in a series of European cities to create good conditions for EU citizens to discuss together European citizenship issues. The assemblies will be focused on three temporal levels concerning politics and public policies: the present, the next future, and multiple possible futures. The point is to set up pragmatic strategic foresight tools, giving the floor to ordinary citizens and let them freely invent and “inhabit’ possible futures. EgID project has been conceived to apply to the Horizon Europe call for application CL2-2022-DEMOCRACY-01-02: The future of democracy and civic participation. The project will be run by an international and interdisciplinary network of professional and researchers in social sciences. This network includes scholars and experts working on interactive democracy and European issues, especially on the organisation of citizens’ assemblies and the observation of participatory dynamics at different levels. In their theoretical work and professional practice, all the members of the network pay particular attention to spatial dynamics, which is a leading thread of the project. The research network that has been built up for the egID project presents the following key points: - Multi-scalar approaches to governance issues (from the local to the global levels). - Diversity and complementarity of analysis methods: qualitative and quantitative methods (discourse analysis, analysis of perceptions and beliefs, analysis of societal complex issues, digital space analysis). - New, experimental approaches (serious games, innovating cartography, arts/sciences hybridisation). - Deep knowledge of interactive democracy processes both institutionalised and emerging. - Combination of fundamental and operational research.
