There is a rising demand for green healthy natural consumer and biobased products, and algae can become the biomass resource of the future, without using fresh water, arable land, or added fertilisers and or pesticides. Both the Baltic and North sea engulf the necessary conditions to scale up production and produce both commodity and sophisticated algae-based products. AlgaeProBanos (APB) brings together 26 experts and industry partners from the BANOS area and beyond, to accelerate product development and market access of sustainable algae solutions. Concretely, APB will support six business pilots, SMEs and startups, to bring eight algae products to the market (TRL7-9) namely in food, feed, nutraceuticals, textiles, cosmetics and plant biostimulants applications. Value chains are based on microalgae and seaweeds, sourced in the Baltic or North Sea or from recycled resources. Innovation takes place in iterative loops with assessments to secure maximum robustness, efficiency, and sustainablesustainability. Furthermore value chains are built with end-users' needs put in the centre, through engaging users in co-creation activities, to ensure maximum uptake. Digital tools are developed to support all actors from biomass producers to consumers. In the end, GoToMarket strategies are tailored to the pilots, providing a trajectory to reach the market. In a meta level, the Algae Accelerator develops new and aggregates existing knowledge, and develops a portfolio of solutions, guidelines and a collaboration and training platform, to benefit the entire algae industry and nourish it into a thriving industry by 2050. The legacy of APB will be deposited to the Ocean Mission BANOS and the EU4Algae.

However, it is still an underexploited feedstock in Europe, mostly used to produce low volume/high value products, due to lack of cost-competitive technological solutions for cultivation and biorefinery processes. MULTIPLY aims to demonstrate economically feasible and environmentally sustainable microalgae cultivation and biorefinery processes, for the provision of valuable algal ingredients, suited for the formulation of mid-price products for the food, feed, biomaterials, lubricants and cosmetics sectors. By enhancing and upscaling efficient, innovative and green technologies for the main steps of microalgae cultivation and downstream processing, implementing circular economy approaches and incorporating advanced monitoring and digital tools, MULTIPLY will increase productivity, reduce the use of resources and associated costs and improve the environmental performance of the processes. Based on 5 microalgae species, MULTIPLY will deliver 10 products of improved environmental impact, meeting market requirements. Led by the industry and backed up on institutes and universities of excellence, MULTIPLY brings together microalgae primary producers from southern and northern Europe, technology developers, researchers and industrial end-users of algae ingredients. A strong dissemination, communication and exploitation strategy will ensure an effective uptake of the project results, enabled by a better understanding of the social acceptance drivers and stimulating the enhanced public acceptance for algae-based products and processes. MULTIPLY will create new value chains, paving the way for the deployment of a sustainable, circular and digital microalgae industry in Europe.

Our mission is to achieve CO2 neutrality by annually removing millions of tons of CO2 from industrial production. The heart of our approach lies in a compact, modular, plug & play microalgae photobioreactor (PBR), strategically located near CO2 sources. Algiecel instals, owns, and operates the PBRs on-site to capture and transform CO2 emissions into valuable algae-based biomass and bio-oil products that are sold to off-take clients. The interaction with the partner owning the site and CO2 stream centres around the offtake agreement for the CO2. The PBR, housed in standard shipping containers, facilitates scalable and easy deployment with minimal technical expertise. The CO2 feedstock suppliers (e.g. biogas plants equipped with biogas upgrading units, delivering a concentrated and pure source of biogenic CO2) provide their emissions and receive reimbursement. The main revenue source is the sale of these sustainable products, either through one-time sales or long-term contracts with agreed-upon prices and volumes. Heightened societal awareness for environmental issues and increasing demand for carbon capture technology due to green transition policies positions Algiecel favourably, providing a timely and essential solution amidst a growing demand for carbon reduction solutions among small and mid-sized CO2 emitters. Algiecel’s transformative Decarbonisation as-a-Service concept not only efficiently eliminates CO2 emissions but also empowers businesses to turn regulatory challenges into strategic advantages. Our solution creates a sustainable financial model by generating revenue through valuable derivative products like oil for feed, food, and cosmetics, as well as biomass for feed or fertiliser. This provides economic incentives for clients, making the adoption of the technology an economically viable decision
