We want to place creative young researchers in front of the real world, enabling them to work on real-life technical issues, working across multiple European countries and organizations, presenting at workshops in front of industrial users/stakeholders, and becoming involved in standardization activities. We also want to provide them with communications skills, the ability to work in groups and an understanding of integrity and ethics in research. The project focus is ultra-dense small cell systems as an important component in future heterogeneous 5G networks (commercial deployment in 2020) and beyond. TeamUp5G considers aspects such as enhanced multi-antenna techniques, efficient backhaul/fronthaul, massive MIMO, communications in the millimetre-wave bands and visible light communications, as well as spectrum sharing and aggregation to enhance system capacity, decrease delay and energy consumption, and improve overall service quality. The research team of 15 young researches supervised by committed experts from the industry and academia will advance the state of the art with the design of novel physical/link/medium access control algorithms and protocols to enhance capacity and user satisfaction, new dynamic spectrum management, opportunistic optimisation of radio resources and cognitive radio techniques, together with self-organization capabilities, with different levels of collaboration, and techniques and methodologies to save energy. Both mobile broadband and internet of things applications and traffic will be harmonised. The new developed techniques will be analysed by simulation and prototyping and some show-cases (immersive video, drones) will be developed to illustrate the novelty and applicability of our ideas. The consortium will train the young researchers on how to contribute and will actively participate in the activities of standardization bodies.

NEXTFOOD will challenge the linear view of knowledge transfer as a top-down process from research to advice and practice, and support the transition to more learner-centric, participatory, action-based and action-oriented education and learning in agrifood and forestry systems. In several pioneering case studies, covering agrifood and forestry systems in Europe, Asia and Africa, farmers solve real challenges related to sustainability together with researchers, students and other relevant stakeholders while developing both green technical skills and soft collaborative competencies. NEXTFOOD will assure quality in research and education by creating a peer-review system for evaluation of practice-oriented research outputs focusing on sustainability and practical usefulness. In addition, we will develop an international accreditation framework for education and training in fields relevant to sustainable agrifood and forestry systems. An innovative action research process will guide the NEXTFOOD project’s development in a cyclical manner, ensuring that the research process and actual case studies are ever-improving. This will exemplify how practice-oriented research can be instrumental to achieve: better collaboration between university and society, more innovation in the agrifood and forestry systems sector, and a progressive agrifood community ready to tackle complex sustainability challenges of the 21st century

Food is not only a source of calories, but also a complex mixture of dietary chemicals, some of which are directly related to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, allergies and some types of cancer. Foods, diet and nutritional status, including overweight and obesity, are also associated with elevated blood pressure and blood cholesterol or even resistance to the action of insulin. These conditions are not only risk factors for non-communicable diseases, but major causes of illness themselves. However, today's diet is characterized by irregular and poorly balanced meals. Unhealthy eating habits in our daily life are not only risk factors for non-communicable diseases, but also major causes of stress and tiredness, i.e., lack of energy. Knowledge about our dietary habits based on the analysis of diverse types of information, including individual parameters, can contribute greatly towards answering key questions to respond to societal challenges regarding food and health. Motivated by the aforementioned, the PROTEIN project aims to develop an end-to-end ecosystem that will engage people to a healthy, pleasurable, nutritional and sustainable diet by offering a daily program adapted to their needs and driven by their personal preferences, physical and physiological characteristics as well as their health status. Specifically, the main objective of PROTEIN is to create an ICT-based system for providing personalized nutrition based on the collection and analysis of large volumes of data related to users' dietary behavioural patterns, physical activity and individual parameters. PROTEIN proposes a radically novel approach to advice and support consumers in everyday living, while ensuring users’ privacy protection i.e., data will be anonymized and securely stored in the Cloud for processing.

The supply-side of seafood markets is limited from both sea fisheries and aquaculture. At the same time demand for seafood products is increasing. In a globalised economy, the conjunction of these two trends should generate high opportunities for any seafood production activity. However, both fisheries and aquaculture companies are facing key challenges, which currently hinder them reaping the full benefits of seafood markets expansion, and even question their sustainability. As a whole, the EU fisheries sector remains at low levels of profitability and sustainability. The SUCCESS project will examine two strategies to improve the competitiveness of the sector: (i) increasing demand for EU seafood products, especially improving the awareness of the advantages of European production (including sustainability requirements and adjustment to market evolution); and (ii) cost reduction in certain production segments. For both strategies development on world markets as well as consumer preferences and awareness will be analysed. Additionally, SUCCESS will explore the different sectors along the value chain (from fisheries and aquaculture producers via processing companies, wholesalers, retailers to direct marketing to mobile fishmongers and restaurants) and their potential for improvements in competitiveness. These analyses also include long term predictions about the viability of certain production systems and will be considered in specific case studies on for example mussel production, shrimp fisheries, whitefish, traditional pond aquaculture and new aquaculture production systems.
