Supported by a consortium comprised of key industry and academic players in the battery field, SOLVE aims to capitalize on the extensive R&D base and contribute to the scaling-up efforts required for SSB Gen4b mass production. To this end, SOLVE will address the most significant barriers hindering sector growth by demonstrating innovations across the main stages of the value chain, optimizing active and inactive materials, and associated processing techniques under industrially relevant conditions (TRL>=6). This will help achieve high-performing, cost-effective, and safe- and sustainable-by-design 20 Ah SSB prototypes and a proof-of-concept 0.25 kWh module based on: (i) thin, defect-free hybrid solid polymer based electrolytes (0.5 mS/cm @25-40ºC, >4.7 V); (ii) high loading solid state cathodes (>4.0 mAh/cm2) based on 4V-class cathode active materials (>200 mAh/g), and (iii) ultra-thin Li metal anodes (including cutting-edge lithophilic current collectors for the development of zero Li excess SSB) (3.000 mAh/g), all of them produced through easily scalable and sustainable R2R processes. This entire process will be reinforced by the implementation and adaptation of predeveloped digital tools and models to support and accelerate the SSB design, as well as the incorporation of imperative sustainability criteria to promote efficient resource utilization through eco-design principles and the development of innovative recycling processes. Finally, a robust dissemination, communication and exploitation strategy, including the development of tailor-made training activities and business models, will be established to propel SOLVE’s post-project commercialization and future market success, ultimately contributing to the decarbonization of the transport sector and the widespread adoption of electromobility.

This approach is supported by (i) innovative, industrialized, high performance and non-intrusive multifunctional plug-and-play envelope solutions to increase the use of locally deployed renewable technologies. These solutions can also be modulated depending on the requirements of the target buildings. (ii) A digital ecosystem of services to improve the whole construction workflow (from design, manufacturing, construction, and operation) reducing costs with a sustainable approach. And (iii) a socio-economic model providing financial schemes and business models at building scale. To demonstrate these objectives the project will deploy all these solutions in four demos (Spain, France, Denmark, and Romania) mixing the retrofitting actions which will use the solutions in four different climates. The demos combine different building typologies (multi-family buildings, educational buildings, offices, and single-family buildings) to proof the concept in buildings and tenants with different requirements. One of the demos (Denmark) is social housing so the intention of the project is to demonstrate that these solutions are feasible for the more demanding public. A second demo is a public school to demonstrate the improved air quality and comfort provided by the solution to solve many of the air quality/ventilation problems in this type of buildings. The project involves all the actors from the construction and energy management value chain with local and international SMEs, large companies, public authorities. Local and international clusters are also included to verify the developments at European level.

The objectives will be to: 1) deploy 57 MW of new electrolysis capacity, 2) implement a flexible H2 supply chain combining underground storage and tube-trailer deliveries 3) deploy 13 multi-modal H2 refuelling stations, 4) deploy 201 on-road fuel cell vehicles, 5) deploy 63 off-road fuel cell vehicles and stationary equipment, 6) strengthen the robustness of the energy and H2 supply chain by integrating a flexible industrial player, 7) design an efficient pipeline-based multi-user H2 ecosystem, 8) prepare for additional large-scale deployment as part of the Valley extension (including IPCEI) and its replication, 9) disseminate and communicate the results of the project to a wide audience. IMAGHyNE will meet the requirements of the Work Programme and contribute to the EU’s H2 strategy. IMAGHyNE will foster the development of a long-lasting H2 economy through: 1) an extension of the Valley including the development of a pipeline network and the transition of several industries part of the observer group, 2) an ambitious replication strategy with at least 5 territories from European countries (France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland), airports, and mountain ecosystems, 3) high quality communication and dissemination activities including training, 4) recommendations to public authorities on regulation (e.g. tunnels). This ambition will be achieved thanks to the involvement of key public and private entities covering the entire H2 value chain, with an extensive experience of EU-funded projects, who have defined a detailed governance structure, Work Plan and financing strategy. IMAGHyNE partners will work collectively to create links and synergies with upcoming and existing Valleys already supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
