NEST will design and implement a novel and unique standoff system with the capability to detect multiple threats amongst which CBRN threats or pandemic viruses. As the day-to-day protection of commercial and transport facilities is the responsibility of the owners and operators, in close cooperation with local law enforcement, NEST will support owners, operators, and security staff by providing (i) threat indications and warnings, and (ii) guidance for facility security by developing appropriate information-sharing and analysis mechanisms. The system will rely on the simultaneous use of low-cost CBRN detectors embedded in one unique detection equipment, which can be located into different sites inside the building or carried by security staff. The use of low-cost sensors will enable to cover a wide space inside. NEST will help in the early detection of CBRN threats in real time, and also provide complementary information—such as such location of threats, temperature, humidity, time, operators involved, etc.—useful for auditing or investigation purposes. These functionalities will be achieved by using an IoT platform capable of acquiring, processing, and merging data from internal and third-party services. Artificial intelligence will be applied to support decision process for securing facilities and for generating automatic alerts. Furthermore, augmented reality will be used to display threats and hazards in a manner that minimise distraction and cognitive failures. NEST will be validated in three different scenarios within the transport and commercial sectors. These scenarios include a diverse range of sites that draw large crowds of people. NEST will share information with the command centers of a stadium, a transport system, and a hotel to assess the risk situation. As a result of this action, owners, operators, and security staff will benefit from a universal system that will lay the foundations for creating a standardisation framework.

PIVOT2 is a continuation of the PIVOT project which was scheduled to finish in September 2019. PIVOT2 will build on the work and concepts of PIVOT and move all of these concepts to higher TRL levels. The overall ambition of PIVOT2 is to develop technologies that are lighter, more energy efficient, more comfortable for passengers and with a lower impact on the track, thereby reducing the life cycle cost not only of the vehicle itself, but of the entire railway system. Technologies that increase the operational reliability of trains, causing less travel disruptions, ensuring that passengers get to destination on time and delivering a better service are also objectives. It is expected that technologies developed should automatically promote the increase of the transport capacity of railway lines. The ambitions of Shift2Rail, which are inherited by PIVOT2, require substantial ground-breaking improvements in the six key technology areas addressed by the project. Indeed, current vehicle solutions are getting closer to their enhancement limits and new radical proposals must be envisaged to accomplish the goals. PIVOT2 will be dealing with the same five key technical demonstrator (TD) areas that were advanced in PIVOT, these are Car body shell, Running gear, Brakes, Accessibility and Doors and Modular Interiors. Within these areas the results are expected to achieve a TRL 7. A new TD for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) has been added which should achieve a TRL 4.

This Project aims to perform the socio-economic Research for Shift2Rail, to develop the SPD Scenarios and the KPI integrated assessment. Smart Maintenance, Standardisation, Integrated Mobility Management and Human Ressources are cross-cutting activities of Shift2Rail as well and consequently topics of the Project, too. The objectives of this proposal IMPACT-2 are: - Evaluating the effects for mobility, society and environment induced by new technology solutions and developments, - Introducing relevant targets and needs to create a more attractive, a more competitive and more sustainable rail system - Defining System Platform Demonstrators (SPD) that represent future application use cases - Defining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that enable the monitoring and assessment of the Shift2Rail overall target achievement. - Smart Maintenance - Prepare an efficient process for bringing Shift2Rail results into standardisation - Develop a common platform for the intelligent mobility management - Human ressources The project IMPACT-2 is planned to fulfil all respective topics of the Shift2Rail Annual Work Plan 2017.

PIVOT takes the Roll2Rail Lighthouse project and addresses mechanical systems within rail vehicles: Carbodies, Running Gear, Brakes, Entry Systems and Interiors including the Cab. With seven technical WPs, it uses a system engineering approach, giving innovations tangible context considering real interface constraints. It includes specific, trackable, relevant, achievable and motivating quick wins which focus attention and drive home innovation. • WP1 explores the materials, joining techniques and manufacturing for innovative carbodies. It seeks to develop a risk-assessed demonstrator specification. • WP2 develops conceptual carbody components for alternative materials. It includes structural/non-structural assessments, FMECA and a sustainability assessment of facets like reparability and recyclability. • WP3 focusses on smart solutions for running gear considering functions such as health monitoring and active suspension systems. These include new sensor system architecture and affordable hardware providing sufficient reliability and robustness. • WP4 addresses running gear performance more generally. It seeks to develop a common technical specification, to innovatively use both new and existing materials and to scope the authorisation demands arising. • WP5 progresses innovations such as electronics with high Safety Integrity Levels, eddy current brakes, new friction pairs, electro mechanical brake solutions and virtual certification. • WP6 covers entry systems with themes including gap fillers, door entry surveillance, solutions for Persons of Reduced Mobility and performance improvement through mass reduction, improved insulation and higher acoustic attenuation. • WP7 deals with modular interiors both for passenger spaces and cabs and aims make vehicle reconfiguration easier. Topics include flexible systems for adjusting tables, seat, luggage racks and the general décor, and ‘plug and play’ systems within the driver’s cab.
