Being flexible, easily foldable and recyclable, paper as substrate and functional part of portable, wireless, and/or disposable electronic devices is emerging as a promising approach to develop sustainable electronics contributing to reduce the electronic waste. INNPAPER is a use-case driven project aiming at providing a configurable common electronic platform based on multifunctional paper. To develop innovative paper manufacturing approaches, including (Nano)cellulose functionalization, to generate paper with tailor-made properties (e.g. (super)hydrophobicity/philicity, conductivity, etc) at surface and bulk level will be the first key challenge of the project. Based on this progress, a configurable common platform comprising a variety of paper-based devices (printed battery, electrochromic display, antenna and hybrid electronic circuit), where the paper will act as substrate and active component, will be developed. The common platform will be the basis for the subsequent manufacturing of a variety of use-cases covering different industrial sectors, in particular packaging and Point of Care (PoC) assays (security, food traceability, medical). The paper-based platforms will be manufactured in existing printing and hybrid manufacturing pilot-lines located at the partners facilities, providing not only a high impact paper-based electronics business case but also an open-access pilot line network to the EU after the project. An eco-design strategy including sustainability and re-use issues will be implemented. Exploitation and Business plan to ensure the profitable use of the pilot-lines in short and long term timescale and the commercialization of the resulting paper-based platforms will be elaborated. The accomplishment of the INNPAPER targets will support the EU industry in the emergence of internet of things, consolidating the paper making and wood-harvesting industries and positioning EU in the environmental management of electronic waste.

EPROMILK is a career development scientific project aimed at offering an experienced researcher (Dr. Eva González) a high-quality research and training programme in the field of Biosensors for Food Safety monitoring, connecting the knowledge of multidisciplinary fields such as bioelectroanalytical chemistry and advanced manufacturing technologies. Combining the researcher’s previous experience in developing electrochemical biosensing technologies, including protease detection and Point-of-Care diagnostics devices, and the hosting institution (BIOLAN Microbiosensores S.L.) proven expertise in developing electrochemical biosensors for food industry, in the framework of EPROMILK we will work on the design and development of biosensors applied to the detection of protease activity in milk for the prediction of shelf-life of dairy products. This will allow the identification and subsequently recall of Ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk batches showing premature spoilage potential, avoiding their arrival to the consumer. Along with these scientific objectives, the project also focuses on developing the researcher’s transferable skills by strengthening communication, scientific writing, supervision and international mobility, preparing her to become an independent well-established scientist, either in the academic or industrial sector. EPROMILK will link both basic and applied research thanks to the scientific excellence and industrial environment of the hosting organisation and of the technological research centre during the secondment (CNTA). In this sense, the researcher will be given a promising opportunity to transfer knowledge and results between academia and industry. After all, EPROMILK aims at providing excellent working conditions to an ambitious international scientific talent in a high-level industrial and research environment, helping her to build her research career in Europe while contributing to the European Research Area development.

Overall objective of the SO2SAFE Project is to develop a new miniaturized ready to use biosensor based on disposable screen printed electrodes (SPE) which will allow a highly sensitive, selective, fast, low-cost and user friendly method for determination of sulphites in crustaceans, since this is a type of food where the sulphite is commonly used. The novel solution will have a direct impact not only in the food industry economy, but also in the society due to the direct impact the sulphite has in health. In order to achieve this main objective, the following specific objectives will be targeted: • Design and fabrication of disposable and high reproducible SPE that can be mass manufactured by microfabrication technologies. • Biofunctionalization of SPE with a specific enzyme for sulphites detection. • Development of a fast, simple and user-friendly miniaturized measure device for SPE lecture. • Development of a reproducible large-scale fabrication methodology (scale-up) that allows the commercialization of the ready to use pre-calibrated solution in order to simplify analysis by eliminating pre-analytical steps. BIOLAN has already developed at the laboratory scale a simple, reliable and specific enzymatic biosensor for sulphite determination and has obtained relevant data that support the innovative project here proposed versus the other methods currently available. Based on these data, BIOLAN expects to address the above listed objectives and become ready to give answer to the expected demand first in the specific market segment of crustaceans and later to open new market opportunities in other sectors such as wine, juices, etc. Through the Phase 1, BIOLAN will be able to better study the feasibility of the here proposed innovation project and design in the more accurate way the breakthrough innovation activities to be developed during Phase 2, opening new market opportunities that will be reflected in the company growth and internationalisation.

The overall objective of AquaVitae is to increase aquaculture production in and around the Atlantic Ocean in a sustainable way by developing new and emerging low trophic species and by optimising production in existing aquaculture value chains. The value chains that AquaVitae will focus on include macroalgae production, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, and production of new echinoderm species as well as existing shellfish and finfish species. A series of cross-cutting Work Packages (WPs) will include research on biosensors, Internet of Things (IoT), product characteristics, consumer attitudes, market potential, sustainability, environmental monitoring, risk assessment, analysis of value chains, profitability, and other socioeconomic aspects. AquaVitae will contribute to various policy dialogues and produce briefs on policy and governance issues. The AquaVitae consortium consists of 36 full partners from Europe and countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean, in addition to an Industry Reference group, a Policy Advice Group, and an External Advisory Group. AquaVitae supports extensive communication and outreach activities, employs a multi-actor approach to ensure stakeholder engagement in all phases of the project, and will set up a durable aquaculture industry and research network around the Atlantic Ocean. Industry partners are present in all case studies, and they have a special responsibility for exploitation and commercialization of the project research results and outcomes. AquaVitae will have a lasting impact on society through the introduction of new species, and through the development of new processes and products based on a circular economy / zero waste approach with improved sustainability. AquaVitae will produce Good Practice standards, facilitate industry apprenticeship and student exchange, support extensive training programs for industry, academia, and the public, and contribute to the implementation of the EU-Brazil-South Africa Belém Statement.
