"Our project is called ""Food for Thought"" and is supported by teachers and students from four countries - Greece, Turkey, Portugal, and Poland. The institutions involved constitute a mixture of experienced participants and newcomers. The project explores the connection that exists between food and a number of primary aspects of human activity and culture. We chose this subject because it offers a variety of perspectives and constitutes a concept that is easily comprehensible by the age group of our students (12-15 years old). We focus our approach on four areas - art/literature, folklore/tradition, health/well-being, and the environment. This journey reveals the importance of food as a cultural element uniting Europeans not only in the course of their history but in their common future as well. It also tries to sensitize our adolescent students to the benefits of a healthy diet and its contribution towards well-being and mental balance. Finally, it introduces the subject of producing and managing food in a world of overpopulation, pollution, and steadily decreasing natural sources - only by keeping the biodiversity of our areas blooming we have a chance to achieve the sustainability of the ecosystem and the food production. In particular, the project is divided into four sections:1. Art and literature - students become familiar with the timeless presence of food in major forms of art and literature, something that proves its importance as a cultural element that unites people of different socio-cultural backgrounds.2. Folklore and tradition - the primordial reference to food in folk tradition and popular culture reveal the astonishing amount of similarity that European nations share on the subject.3. Health and well-being - the dependence of people's diet to home-cooked meals, which are often based on traditional and straightforward recipes, and the avoidance of fast-food consumption help adolescents grow up properly and build a healthy body both physically and mentally.4. Biodiversity and sustainability - the acquaintance with these very important concepts enhances the environmental consciousness of our young students and gives them motives to devote all their energies to preserve the viability of the ecosystem. The activities of the project intend to help participants obtain and improve primary competencies related to values, skills, attitudes, and knowledge. The tangible outcome has the form of questionnaires, videos, posters, photographs, student diaries, booklets, handicrafts and more. Moreover, by taking part in these tasks students will develop their ICT, language and communication skills. The intangible results appear in the way students refine their critical thinking, open-mindedness, tolerance, participation in discussions, and expression of their opinion. The outcome of the project is continuously presented at schools, on the school and project websites and the eTwinning platform. All activities take place at local and international levels so that a big number of students are able to join, experience and benefit by them. The number of students and teachers being involved in the activities of the project is much larger than the actual participants in the LTAs since project work is accomplished in the course of normal lessons and also outside the classroom environment through workshops, excursions to institutions and enterprises and meetings with interesting people. The host parents and the members of the local communities are informed about the project through various dissemination activities. We adopt a holistic approach that involves a cognitive, practical and psychological dimension of learning. The practical application of what has been learned aims to positively influence the attitudes and behavior of the participants. We also follow an open-ended learning method, which allows for multiple solutions to problems, during which students learn to accept and respect the views of others. Additional ways of work include blended learning, group work in multinational teams, competitions, games, learning through experience and discovery, developing critical thinking skills, using communication and cooperation.Beyond specific benefits related to the topics of our project, there is also the long term advantage of working in a varied socio-cultural environment. An Erasmus+ project resembles a contemporary small-scale multicultural society and strengthens individuals'' positive perceptions of the world around them. This project brings to fruition the vision of the participating schools. It attempts to improve the quality of educational output and the sustainable development of cooperation with current social and international partners. It promotes the share of examples of good practice through visits to partner organizations, the development of competences of students and teachers, the use of eTwinning, and the validation of mobilities output, learning outcome and the results of nonformal learning."

"As a result of a study carried out on 464 secondary school students (Kaldırım, E. (GÜ, Gazi Eğitim Fakültesi Dergisi, Cilt 25, Sayı 3 (2005) 143-162), it has been found out that secondary school students mostly misinterpret or have a lack of knowledge on the perception of democracy and values bound to it.The aim of our project is to make our students ,who also have the same problem, more aware of the concepts of democracy, human rights, moral values and the respect to the""others"". Taking the inspiration from the saying “It should be noted that children's games are not merely games. One should regard them as their most serious activities.“ by Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, and the enlightenment given by the ""Game-based learning"", we have decided to teach those values to our students through their most serious activities, games. As it is aimed within our project, there will also be handicapped students who will be included in games and which will show students no matter how different they are, they are so similar in fact. All school communities will benefit from exposure to different sociocultural backgrounds and pupils with different learning and other special needs. All the partner schools recognise the importance of the religious, cultural and social identity of every child and family, these will be shared with all partners during the project. The project will also allow us to provide a European dimension to learning allowing staff and pupils to be exposed to communities that may be more disadvantaged or more advantaged than they are. There will be 8 partners within the project. (Norway, Turkey, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, Romania, Portugal and Poland) All the partners are selected according to certain features of theirs like having disadvantaged students (Turkey, Latvia, Romania, Estonia), having disabled students (Poland, Turkey, Portugal), having different social, cultural, economical, academic and developmental backgrounds (all the participating countries) and having experience (Norway, Portugal and Poland.)Interaction will be of great importance throughout our project to let our students raise awareness about democracy, human rights, moral values and respect for ""the others"". As they keep in close touch, it will become normal for them to have differences around them as well as the similarities. Therefore, we will have five learning, teaching, training activities which will include game tournaments, exhibitions, workshops on games and education ""Learning via games"", ""Taking individual differences into account within their games"", ""Games today and games in the past"" , ""Games with toys from recyclable materials"" , ""Origami"", ""The effects of games on Child Development"", ""Games with wooden handmade toys"". The activities will be beneficial both for the staff and the pupils. The method of ""Game-based learning"" will be our guide throughout the project. The students will practice the certain values through games and gain conscious towards them. As a result of our project we expect 3500 people within the borders of our schools and many more around our schools within the neighboring regions and schools to be informed about our project. We hope they will all become people with more of an awareness on democracy, human rights, moral values and respect for ""the others"" at the end of the project. We will evaluate the results of our project via surveys at the beginning, during and at the end of the project.Believing that the more people we reach, the wider effect our project will gain, we will disseminate the results of our project through many channels like our project website, our schools' websites, local governors' websites, monthly bulletins, the local press, to neighboring schools, staff in our towns, parent associations, university students on work experience and anyone we can reach. That way we aim to create a butterfly effect starting from our own schools and spreading the effect to a wider community. We will also inform the people about Erasmus+ projects to encourage them to carry out similar projects. In conclusion, we aim to have students who are more aware of the democracy, human rights, moral values and who are more respectful to the differences around them. Another thing we aim to get is a school environment which is more student-centered, which supports student-autonomy more and which is enhanced with different teaching methods from different parts of Europe. Letting our school representatives increase their managerial skills will be another result of our project. We also aim to have staff and pupils who are better at using ICT tools and who are better at using the English language. Making our students, staff, parents and managers feel the identity of a European and blending the culture of all the partner countries will be the last but not the least effect of our project."
