The Health at a Glance: Europe 2014 (European Commission / OECD) states that smoking is the highest avoidable health risk in Europe with 22.8% of EU citizens smoking. There is a strong link between smoking and poverty, with smoking prevalence rates highest in deprived areas of Western Europe such as the South Wales valleys and parts of Eastern Europe. Youth unemployment rates remain high across Europe.The Filter Europe is a project aimed at improving the skills and knowledge of youth workers and disadvantaged young volunteers. The aim will be to equip young volunteers and youth workers with the skills to work with young people to prevent them from smoking in the first place or address their smoking behaviour. By working with their peers and those who work closely with them, we have found that this has the greatest impact on young people.
