Before the pandemic outbreak, there were many families across Europe for whom the debt legacy of last 10 years remained a profound and ongoing issue. Debt consolidation and restructuring, negative equity mortgages, rent arrears, payday loans, personal insolvency, vulture funds are terms that have become all too familiar for many adults throughout Europe and have been accompanied by repossessions of goods and property and evictions. While these are the visible signs of the stress that many families still find themselves under there has also been a rise in family break-ups, stress related illnesses, even suicides. For many adults, the lack of appropriate financial literacy is at the centre of these ongoing problems and never more so are these skills and competences needed to navigate the next wave of financial uncertainty. In truth, there is no easy way out of the current situation for many families and hard choices will have to be made to try and mitigate the impact of financial difficulties moving forward. If there are any lessons to be learned from the recent events in Europe it must surely be acknowledged that financial literacy is a key literacy for all Europeans if we are to achieve the inclusive and equitable society that is one of the core EU objectives.Families can't issue bonds or get support from the European Central Bank. When families are caught up in dire financial circumstances there are a limited number of options available to them to help overcome their problems. While financial institutions around Europe are committed to working with families in debt to plan a way out of the current distressful situations and while there are now a whole host of organisations that have been established to offer advice and support to individuals in financial difficulty the adult family members who have in most cases initiated the current debt burden are still refusing to engage with the financial institutions and support agencies. These problems won't go away and one of the main factors hindering possible resolutions of family debt is the lack of key financial literacy skills that currently pertain in most low-skilled communities where debt burdens remain high. For many individuals the support agencies that have been established come with a stigma, stress and embarrassment. additionally, many of the effected adults don't have the self-confidence to contact their financial institution and begin the process of restructuring or reconciling their indebtedness. For many building financial literacy in a non-threatening environment can be the first step on the road to recovery. Adult and community education settings are the perfect vehicle to begin the literacy raising process through a family learning approach. Effective family learning requires a bottom-up approach in that family are considered in the design of any proposed learning materials. The overall aim of the project is to produce new pedagogic practices that impact adult education provision by supporting family learning through new digital learning tools.Through the MONEY MATTERS project will develop the following outputs:- O1: State of the Art Research Report – identifying the latent training and resource needs of Adult Educators and Disadvantaged Families – creating learning outcome matrices for training curricula and value propositions for the resource toolkit and literacy library- O2: Train the Trainer programme with manual for adult educators on the family learning approach to financial literacy- O3: Induction training programme for parents and guardians introducing them to the theme of financial literacy and the relevant resources created by the partnership- O4: Digital Resource Toolkit and Mobile App containing age-appropriate materials for all members of the family to be used by adult educators- O5: Financial Literacy Library (online interface) for families on the topic of family literacy with appropriate real-life case studies (created using Kumo.io or similar which is a mind-mapping software). All resources, including the training manual and resource toolbox, will be available in all partner languages (EN, PT, GR, IT) on a dedicated project website and they will be made available to all interested parties without restriction in keeping with the open access requirements of the ERASMUS+ programme.

Parents under financial and time pressure – working long hours, sometimes multiple jobs, to pay the bills. Children living their lives on social media – constantly worried about keeping up with their peers, seeking validation from online sources, facing online threats including cyberbullying, grooming, cat fishing, to name a few. Direct communication is at a minimum as the modern family is just too busy to check in with each other. And what are the consequences of this modern family portrait? We don’t yet know, but we do know the vital role that parents should play in the development of their children, and the negative developmental impact that poor parenting can have on children. With the advances and pervasiveness of digital technologies today, parents and children are increasingly living their lives online – parents through email and Facebook, children through SnapChat and TikTok. In this way, parents and children are so consumed with reaching out to people beyond the borders of the family unit; that they often forget the importance of connecting with the individuals in their household. In times gone by, family time meant sharing meals, playing board-games, taking drives together and stopping for picnics, etc. However, in today’s reality, these activities have been replaced by individual activities that are driven by technology. A 2018 study by Childwise in the UK found that 54% of 3- year old children own their own smart device. While this project does not wish to reverse time or to infringe on the advances of technology, it does call into question the behavioural, attitudinal and communicative impacts that these devices are having on young children if they are not monitored. An earlier report by Childwise in 2018 found that with the increased popularity of voice-activated tools in the household, children were learning to speak aggressively and rudely by responding to the voice-activated technology which was not correcting their inappropriate language or communication style. This shows there is a need to also invest in parent-child communication so that today’s children develop with the communication skills they need to be active members of the society of tomorrow. How a parent communicates with their child not only impacts the parent-child bond, but also effects the self-esteem of the child, the child’s ability to understand and interpret emotions, their empathy, their willingness to share with others, their ability to listen and understand, their capacity to process negative emotions such as anger, frustration and grief, appropriately, to name but a few. This is why the Inside-Out project will address the communication skills and styles of parents so that they can forge strong parent-child bonds through effective communication. In research conducted to support the development of this application, partners discovered that many of the issues pertaining to poor parent-child communication stem from a lack of coping skills of parents. When parents cannot cope with the modern-day stresses of life, their communication with their children is impacted.Through the proposed Hybrid Curriculum the Inside-Out project aims to build the stress management, self-care and resilience of parents so that they can develop the skills and competences required to fully invest in quality parent-child communication, for the betterment of their child’s development. We further aim to support parents to assess and refine their communication style so that they can practice positive parenting, positive discipline and can respond to their children, rather than react to their behaviour. To address these objectives, the Inside-Out project will develop a wide range of educational resources to support parents, families and front-line educators who support them to address the issues of self-care among parents and which also provide parents with the guidance they need to adapt their parenting styles and behaviours to nurture positive relationships with their children. Envisaged resources include the following:IO1 – Inside-Out Hybrid Curriculum for ParentsIO2 - In-service training for Adult EducatorsIO3 – Inside-Out MOOC

Without these skills using a machine to buy a train ticket, read to their children or understand written safety precautions becomes difficult and a barrier to social and work inclusion. The importance of Digital Literacy, as one of the eight key competences that every European citizen should master, is even highlighted by the European Commission’s 2010 Digital Agenda for Europe. As a consequence, the European Council adopted a “Recommendation on Upskilling Pathways” in order to help adults acquire a minimum level of literacy, numeracy and digital skills through the development of high-quality and accessible services. In this context the COMP-UP Consortium, according to its experience with disadvantaged and low-qualified adults and in adult education, suggests that updating competences of Adult Education Professionals (AEP) who support adult learners is a reply to improve the literacy, numeracy and digital skills of this target group.OBJECTIVES AND PARTICIPANTSThe COMP-UP project, in line with the needs and priorities listed above, will be aimed at increasing the motivation of low-qualified adult learners to take part in education and improve their literacy, numeracy and digital skills. In practice COMP-UP aims to:- Collect and analyse EU and NA projects and tools in the field and identify the competence gaps of AEPs (IO1)- Supply competences to 50 AEPs to motivate low-qualified adult learners in improving their skills (IO2)- Update digital competences of AEPs through a blended-learning methodology and the use of Webinars- Develop an online platform designed to be a “resources library” and valorise EPALE platform activities (IO3)- Implement Motivation workshops to improve the 3 basic competences of 75 low-qualified adult learners (Digital, Literacy, numeracy) (IO4)- Build a Local and EU Network of AEPs using the same methodologies- Valorise the COMP-UP concept and training through 11 multiplier events reaching 280 people at EU level (E1-11).METHODOLOGYThe consortium will use different interconnected methodologies. First, it will investigate the needs and skill gaps of AEPs through a focus group in each country. Second, on the basis of an interactive process of development and mutual feedback the partnership will elaborate the COMP-UP Tool collection, Training Curriculum and Motivation Toolkit: a collection of useful resources for AEPs to implement workshops aimed at motivating low-qualified adult learners to improve their literacy, numeracy and digital competences. Finally, the development phase will be followed by a testing phase and a common learning and teaching activity. The main expected RESULTS are:IO1.COMP-UP Tool collection, a collection of already developed EU and NA projects, tools and methodologies in the motivation and skills assessment field and a guide for AEPs on how to apply them when working with low-qualified adults.IO2.COMP-UP Training Curriculum to supply competences to AEPs to develop effective outreach, guidance and motivation strategies for low-qualified adult learners and to use skill assessment tools in the literacy, numeracy and digital area.IO3.COMP-UP Online platform to create a network of AEPs and to share and valorise the Outputs, Webinars and the selected EU and NA projects and tools in the field of motivation and skills assessment at EU level.IO4.COMP-UP Motivation Toolkit, a practical resource for AEPs to implement Motivation workshops to low-qualified adult learners, with step-by-step description on how to carry out the activities. These IOs will be connected with Local and National Multiplier Events in each country to reach a wide range of target groups and stakeholders. In addition to the 4 core intellectual outputs COMP-UP will develop further outputs necessary to achieve its objectives: Dissemination and Communication Strategy, Quality Management Handbook and reports.COMP-UP will have an extended IMPACT on:- Direct participants in the project (AEPs) who will acquire competences and innovative tools in the field of motivation and skill assessment (literacy, numeracy, digital) of low-qualified adults and networking with stakeholders;- Low-qualified adult learners who will benefit indirectly in terms of better understanding of their own communication styles, learning styles and barriers in learning. As a consequence, they will be more motivated to take part in learning;- Partner organizations who will integrate the COMP-UP training programme in their curriculum and will replicate it to reach even more professionals;- Stakeholders, Associated Partners who can access a wide range of materials in various languages thanks to the online platform, which will be available for 5 years after the project end, thus ensuring a sustainable EU network of stakeholders in the field
