Precision Agriculture (PA) has been enabled by satellite imagery and provide disruptive new tools and decision support for farmers. However, we have identified that satellite optical data, currently being used by the best PA companies around the world, is not enough to obtain the best results. We have developed our proprietary AgroRadar algorithms and data models that process Copernicus EO Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data (Sentinel 1A and 1B), therefore obtaining more precise and detailed information than any other PA company in the world, in an affordable, automated way, and our objective is to deploy a scalable PA service based on Copernicus Earth Observation data (using optical and SAR imagery) available to clients worldwide, tailored for diverse types of crops, forests and livestock explorations. SAR imagery has the competitive advantage to not being affected by clouds or fog, making it possible for our report to make full use of the 5-day imaging time frame made available by Copernicus Sentinel Satellites almost worldwide (optical images can have up to 75% less availability and therefore are useless for creating on-time weekly reports for our end-users). The global PA market is estimated to reach €7 billion by 2022 with a CAGR of 15% between 2016 and 2022. USA market is currently the more mature, but EU is currently valued at 600M€ and growing at a fast pace. Our end users are farmers (with pricing options for small and large scale operations), insurance companies and banks (asset owners) and also governmental agencies responsible for forests, large water body management and subsidies verification (i.e. we are the only company providing a solution for large-scale forest fire risk charts based on sub-canopy detection of biomass). We have created AgroInsider to provide PA services in early 2016, and so far our expert team of 5 employees (growing rapidly) has generated a turnover of 160.000€, with clients in Portugal, Spain and Brazil.

PestNu targets the field -testing and demonstration of digital and space based technologies (DST) and agro-ecological and organic practices (AOP) under a systemic approach to reduce the pesticides and fertilisers use, and loss of nutrients. The consortium brings novel DST including: AI robotic traps for real time pest monitoring; Autonomous mobile robots for pesticide monitoring and 3D spot spraying; Earth Observation missions with robust Agroradar AI algorithms to map soil/plant nutrients and pest plant inputs using Copernicus data/services; and in-situ and real-time nutrient analysers. All the DST will be interconnected to a user-centric cloud-based Farm Management System, which features a robust Decision Support System integrated with a blockchain based system for DST data evidence, integrity and AI models verification and with a cybersecurity platform to prevent cyber-attacks and IoT vulnerabilities. The AOP include: on-site production of biofertilisers from agricultural waste-waters through a robust automated drainage recycling system via an innovative enzymatic hydrolysis procedure; a novel foliar biopesticide formulated by circular bioeconomy operations, targeting fungal diseases with biostimulant effect; and advanced nutritional programs for organic farming. The showcase systemic DST & AOP solutions will be demonstrated and tested in aquaponic and hydroponic greenhouse and open-field vegetable cultivation in Greece and Spain. A Pesticide Reduction Program will evaluate the Maximum Residue and the Acceptable Daily Intake levels to ensure vegetable's food safety and LCA activities will be performed. All these systemic approaches will be performed under a strong collaboration among all the Farm to Fork stakeholders and European Commission services.

Roughly 30% of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement (PA) include land-based mitigation measures, but there are still significant uncertainties in their effectiveness to deliver negative emissions. Aside from the expected shortfall of all current NDCs to deliver on the below 2 oC ambition, this uncertainty adds to the risks to human wellbeing as a result of climate change. Land-use based mitigation technologies (LMTs) can play a crucial role in the global efforts to meet the PA goals and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Considering the land-climate-development interface, LANDMARC aims to assess the impacts of LMTs as net sinks for greenhouse gas (GHGs) by applying unique mixed-methods approach. LANDMARC assesses the potential and feasibility of LMTs in the AFOLU sector by: a) quantitatively assessing environmental, social-economic, co-benefits and trade-offs identified through a suite of monitoring tools and model system (including land use, climate and economic models) complemented by; b) qualitative assessments guided by stakeholder engagement. This mixed-method approach allows us to provide more detailed insights on the effectiveness and climate resilience of LMTs at different spatial scales (e.g. scaling up from local/national level to the regional/global level). These tools, services and approaches will contribute to land-based LMT decision support in the private sector and by policy makers. LANDMARC is an interdisciplinary consortium with expertise from ecology, engineering, climate sciences, global carbon cycle, soil sciences, satellite earth observation sciences, agronomy, economics, social sciences, and business. There is a balanced representation of partners from academia, SMEs, and NGOs from the EU, Africa, Asia and the Americas, which ensures a wide coverage of LMTs operating in different contexts (e.g. climates, land-use practices, socio-economic etc.) and spatial scales.
