The project will prepare librarians to become community integration leaders and will support libraries as safe non- formal learning environments.<< Implementation >>We will map and share the best practices in barrier free book development and methods of reaching out to non-readers (a toolkit), print barrier free books, prepare materials for educators & librarians and train the staff-educators so they could deliver training for librarians in their countries. Librarians will test the new methodology by organising “shared reading”, “language cafes’ and other learning and integration events in libraries. Results will be disseminated and made available online.<< Results >>We will have tested best practices on reaching out and overcoming barriers that encounter second language readers (from migrant background ) and people with reading difficulties caused by dyslexia, illness or age related problems. 12 Staff educators and 60 librarians will be trained and prepared to share & implement the new methods. 12 barrier free books and 28 pilot events in libraries will give a chance to 100 non-readers and migrants to become active learners and members of local communities.

The main activity aimed at achieving this goal was to implement in libraries the so called ‘learning circles’, understood as groups of people who meet regularly in the library to learn something together. People who participate in them use online courses available, free-of-charge, on the Internet, share their knowledge and experiences, and learn from each other, being supported by the learning circle’s facilitator. Facilitators don't need to have expert knowledge - such knowledge comes from courses and other online resources, as well as from the community of learners.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of which took place during the project implementation, an additional goal of the project was added: to prepare facilitators of learning circles to organize and run engaging online meetings. The project’s implementation consisted of 6 parts: 1) analysis of the state of adult education in the project partners’ countries, with particular emphasis on online learning; (2) development of educational materials - including database of available online courses (280 resources), training curriculum, a manual for facilitators, online course for people participating in learning circles, instructional videos, and a collection of good practices; (3) trainings of facilitators’ trainers (13 educators) and their pilot learning circles (all virtually);(4) project results dissemination including training of 89 librarians - learning circles facilitators (virtually);(5) pilot learning circles in libraries (32) attended by over 200 participants virtually and in person; (6) updating of educational resources taking into account experience from virtual learning circles. The idea of learning circles and the experience of libraries participating in the project were disseminated during online events, thanks to which the information and project resources reached over 1000 people from libraries in the countries participating in the project (Finland, Germany, Poland, Portugal, and Romania). The trainers developed various means of support and communication tools for librarians who plan to organize future learning circles, and are ready to support new groups of librarians interested in implementing learning circles in their libraries.

There is therefore a risk that as technology advances, existing inequalities will be exacerbated, and disadvantaged groups will be hit hardest. Libraries are well placed as local community institutions which offer a broad range of educational resources to serve these disadvantaged groups. By offering digital resources as well as a trusted physical space, they contribute to both digital and social inclusion. NEWCOMER will allow library staff who are working directly with adult learners in their communities to explore with their counterparts from other countries why the adult education provision varies so greatly, how best to support adult learners in the context of the library, and what best practice examples to apply to meet the needs of disadvantaged and marginalised groups. The main activity of the NEWCOMER project is a series of transnational project meetings. The project consortium constitutes eight partners from the library sector with a mixture of profiles and backgrounds but all demonstrating a rich experience in providing opportunities for education and inclusion in their communities. Each project partner will host a transnational project meeting in which they will present and exchange best practice in the field of adult education and social inclusion from their institution, with the support of associate partners who work with specific target groups of disadvantaged learners. Two participants from each partner will be chosen to participate in the project meetings based on their profile, experience, and ability to maintain a lasting network.Over the lifetime of the NEWCOMER project, the best practices exchanged at the project meetings will be collated in a manual for dissemination to a wider audience from the library sector and beyond. These insights will also serve as inspiration for the development of policy recommendations to inform policy change at the local, national and European level. Importantly, NEWCOMER will also track the professional development of library staff participating in the project meetings through a series of evaluations, in order to ensure that their capacity to serve local adult learners through libraries is strengthened as a result of the project methodology. The objectives of the NEWCOMER project are threefold:1. Provide an opportunity for cross-border exchange and networking between library staff working with adult learners;2. Develop the competences of library staff working with adult learners based on exchanges with project partners contributing their experience and expertise;3. Empower library staff to deliver more effective support to their adult learners, thereby promoting social inclusion and uptake of educational opportunities in libraries by adult learners within their communities. The vision of the NEWCOMER consortium is to take this methodology beyond the project scope and ultimately to create a global programme of exchange and learning for library staff, with the ultimate goal of better serving disadvantaged people through a network of connected local libraries. This shared vision will drive project partners to ensure quality implementation of the project, measure impact on the ground, and build a network that will be sustained beyond the project lifetime.

GEMEINSAM.GESTALTEN. E.V.Funder: European Commission Project Code: 101103416Funder Contribution: 1,500,000 EURTeacher Education for a Future in Flux (the Academy) responds to the European concerns around the attractiveness of teaching as a profession in a world of rapid change and global crises. There is a need for more student teachers who are ready to enter the profession and work with highly diverse and mobile classrooms. The Academy’s model for teachers’ professional development ensures continued training for teachers, committed to values of European democracy and citizenship. The TEFF model-framework combines digital, green, diversity & inclusion and – uniquely – well-being skills with a European dimension to equip teachers and enrich teacher education for a future in flux. The Academy is a consortium of ten European universities, their partner schools, further education providers and government institutions dedicated to strengthening cross-phased and inter-disciplinary teacher education. Its goal is to contribute towards a more attractive teaching profession through its transversal, agile and life-long learning offers. The Academy is based on partners’ existing cooperation (the European University Alliance EUniWell and the district government of the City of Cologne). These strong bases enable collaboration between the project member and content-specific working groups, and reaches the target groups: students and teachers as much as policy-makers.All Academy learning opportunities empower pre-service and in-service teachers to become futures literate so that they link and develop ways to address present and future challenges. Innovative activities include makerspaces and urban laboratories in addition to established lecture series and learning modules. All are designed, implemented, tested and disseminated as part of the Academy’s agile project management. Especially the close-knit collaboration between universities and partnering schools promises high impact and sustainable results at regional and European levels, both in the present time and the times to come.
