It is understood that wireless communication links between road vehicles and infrastructure will be commonplace in the near future. Such links will lead to the availability of a rich new data source potentially containing real time position and speed data (among others) for some or all vehicles on the UK road network. This creates business opportunities to develop tools that can employ this “localization probe data”, alongside existing sources, in applications. An application of particular interest is Urban Traffic Control (UTC). The technical objective of this research project is to create a city centre sized microscopic traffic simulation model. Measurement systems (including localization probes) will be simulated. Thus the simulator becomes a proving ground for the development of novel UTC techniques that employ these data. This project will output techniques and algorithms for the next generation of UTC systems. Also output will be processing and visualization techniques that can present a human traffic controller with the state of the traffic network. Finally, general processing and visualisation tools for 3rd party (non UTC) applications will be produced.

Siemens and the SYPTE are planning to offer a unique and innovative IT solution for South Yorkshire in order to improve local citizen and traveller access to comprehensive, yet personalised, travel information (particularly across the various transport modes) enabling better informed journey choices to be made. The Feasibility Study will focus on specific local use cases, describing the potential integrated and multi-modal approaches that will be possible once the final system has been implemented. The Integrated Mobility Platform will enable an integrated transport network to become a reality for South Yorkshire and beyond, encouraging the utilisation of multiple transport modes within a single journey. The Feasibility Study will demonstrate the added value for all stakeholder groups: the end traveller, the local citizen, the local authorities, the passenger transport executive and the public and private operators. The project will promote more efficient journeys allowing South Yorkshire residents to be more productive, taking advantage of the integrated connections available and, ultimately, encouraging more inward investment for the area.
