CARLA

CARLA: CELLULAR ACTIVITY RNA-BASED ELISA FOR SIMULTANEOUS IDENTIFICATION AND EVOLUTION OF MICROBIAL THREAT STATUS TO HELP WATER RESOURCE MANAGERS ACT BEFORE BEING TOO LATE
Funder: European CommissionProject code: 101173051 Call for proposal: HORIZON-EIC-2024-ACCELERATOR-01
Funded under: HE | HORIZON-EIC-ACC Overall Budget: 1,000,000 EURFunder Contribution: 1,000,000 EUR
Description

Climate change and human pollutions have significantly accelerated the eutrophication of aquatic environments, modifying the frequency, intensity and seasonality of harmful algal blooms worldwide. Their capacity to release deadly toxins makes them a serious health, environmental and economic threat, illustrated by annual global direct economic losses of >>5 bn€. Because blooms can appear and disappear in 2 to 3 days, it can go unnoticed by current monitoring solutions, which provide late or uncomplete results. This is a real challenge for water managers to daily monitor microbial quality. They’re looking for solutions able to quickly identify the nature of microbial threats and predict their evolution to be proactive and take action before it’s too late. Early identification and warning are the key to risk prevention and sustainable blue growth. Microbia Environnement (ME) has developed CARLA, a game-changing solution able to simultaneously identify microbial threats and their level of activity in less than 3 h. Water managers can identify blooms types and timeframe to adjust the amount and duration of water treatment/ site closure to decrease costs and protect end users faster and better than any other existing value proposition on the market. For water testing laboratories, CARLA offers a competitive edge with its high throughput capacity and low-cost format. Today, ME address the market of the microbial quality of water estimated at ~€5 bn by 2028. Over 100 million water samples are tested every year in Europe. This number is set to grow as new advanced, rapid, efficient and cost-effective technologies are introduced. We work with water utilities, local authorities and water testing laboratories, all are valuable partners in technology dissemination. The company will have 3 revenues types: CARLA services (25k€/services), CARLA kits (350-450€/unit) and patent licensing. ME is looking for funds to accelerate its development and industrialization of its operations.
