IMPLEMENTATION OF KNOWLEDGE ON ARCHITECTURE, SPACE AND DESIGN WITH A CONTRIBUTION TO ARCHITECTURAL CULTURAL HERITAGE FOR VOCATIONAL WOODWORKING SCHOOLS For a long time, architectural and design professions have been noticing that the general level of awareness about good-quality architecture and design, along with their relationship to architectural cultural heritage, is very low. In this project, Center arhitekture Slovenije and its partners endeavour to overcome the transfer of knowledge about architecture and design through the involvement of students of vocational woodworking schools. The trend of using wood in the building industry is growing, and all three partner organisation countries support the development of wood industries – therefore our focus is vocational woodworking schools. The students of today will create the works of tomorrow – in architecture and interior design. Rather than from architectural and design offices, their commissions will come directly from the general public, making them of even better quality and their visual appearance at a higher level. The new knowledge will support them in the awareness about the significance of protecting architectural cultural heritage, which is being deteriorated precisely because of the lack of awareness thereof. These students will find a challenge in regenerating architecture in wood, as today we witness many cases of deterioration of high-quality but abandoned architecture. The project will be carried out as a pilot project where we will show, on the case of two classes of secondary woodworking schools, how to get students familiar with architectural topics, using an engaging and experiential approach. The experts from Center arhitekture Slovenije, Ljubljana, Slovenia, Arhitektonski fakultet (Faculty of Architecture), Zagreb, Croatia, and Bilding Kunst- und Architekturschule für Kinder und Jugendliche, Innsbruck, Austria, will prepare a program to empower the students from vocational woodworking schools, to learn about the world of architecture and design in wood from experts in the field, and at a level adapted to their understanding. It is important that future experts in wood profession are able to distinguish between good and poor quality architecture, interiors, and design, and gain confidence in communication with their clients as well as architects and designers. The project’s programme will consist of three field trips (excursions) where the students from Croatia and Slovenia will together visit examples of good practices in architecture and interiors in wood, accompanied by architects and designers – one field trip per each country (Austria, Croatia, and Slovenia). This will be followed by two more field trips – Croatian students will visit architectural landmarks in Croatia, and Slovenian students those in Slovenia. This will be followed by workshops, which the Austrian partners will hold for Slovenian students in Škofja Loka and for Croatian students in Karlovac, at their respective schools. The last activity will involve a visit of an architectural office (studio) that designed one of the architectural works visited, where the students will learn about the various aspects of design and implementation of wooden architecture. The field trip itineraries will be composed so that the students will learn about traditional architecture and interiors, the 1950s and 1960s architecture, but particularly contemporary architecture from the last decade. After the conclusion of the project, the programme, which will be held at both schools, will be adapted to other vocational woodworking schools in Slovenia and Croatia. We will prepare a manual that the teachers will be able to use and deliver the programme prepared in this project. The manual will be designed so that the teachers from other countries will be able to use the itineraries in Slovenia and Croatia, respectively, take a field trip and visit selected good practices. As the manual will be written in three languages, i.e. Slovenian, Croatian, and English, teachers from other European educational establishments concerned with woodworking will be able to adopt the entire concept of the project, including fields trips and workshops. The manual with itineraries, papers, and workshops will be updated annually, and available on websites and social media.
