Abstract

O caso de estudo desta dissertação é a quinta histórica do Palácio de Estoi, construída por volta do ano de 1787, constituindo-se inicialmente para ser a residência principal do Coronel Francisco Carvalhal e Vasconcelos e de sua família. O Coronel Carvalhal e Vasconcelos, era também dono de diversas propriedades na aldeia de Estoi, sendo que decidiu ordenar neste local a construção desta obra. Para tal, encomendou o projeto ao arquiteto Manuel Caetano de Sousa (?), um dos autores no projeto dos jardins do Palácio Nacional de Queluz e também o Jardim Botânico da Ajuda em Lisboa. O Palácio e Quinta de Estoi foram construídos numa área composta por diversas propriedades agrícolas de elevada dimensão, local conhecido anteriormente como “fazenda de Estoi”. A família Carvalhal e Vasconcelos de forma a concretizar a obra de grandiosa dimensão procedeu também à compra de outras propriedades localizadas na área envolvente. A construção deste espaço transformou a paisagem da aldeia de Estoi e passou a ser o local de residência oficial desta família durante várias gerações. Após a extinção do último membro da família Carvalhal e Vasconcelos em 1875, o Palácio e Quinta de Estoi estiveram durante um longo período abandonado, situação que provocou um elevado estado de degradação no local. Em 1893 José Francisco da Silva, burguês natural de Estoi, residente em Beja, compra o imóvel em hasta pública. No ano de compra, inicia-se as obras de restauro, sendo contratado para a realizar a obra o arquiteto e decorador Domingos António da Silva Meira. O Palácio e Quinta de Estoi após desaparecimento de José Francisco da Silva é posteriormente comprado por parte da Câmara Municipal de Faro, que realiza as obras necessárias para a recuperação deste local histórico. Mais recentemente foi alvo de nova intervenção, de características contemporâneas, através de um projeto de arquitetura, de adaptação e ampliação para à função de Pousada. A presente dissertação é composta por uma análise histórica e biofísica sobre a área de intervenção. Este trabalho concretiza-se através da proposta de um Plano Diretor de Restauro com o objetivo de intervir sobre este local histórico, de acordo com os princípios e normas de intervenção em jardins históricos.

The case of study of this work is about historic farm from the Palace of Estoi, that was built by around 1787, was a residence of the Coronel Francisco de Brito Carvalhal e Vasconcelos, that was at the time Marshall of field, and owner of a lot of properties in the Village of Estoi, he ordered the building of the palace in the first place, designed by the arquitect Manuel Caetano de Sousa, one of the authors in the design of the gardens of National Palace of Queluz and also the Botanical Garden of Ajuda in Lisbon. The Palace and Quinta de Estoi were built in an area composed of several large agricultural properties, a place formerly known as “Estoi farm”. The Carvalhal and Vasconcelos family in order to carry out the work of great size also proceeded to purchase other properties located in the surrounding area. The construction of this space transformed the landscape of the village of Estoi and became the official residence of this family for several generations. After the extinction of the last member of the Carvalhal and Vasconcelos family in 1875, the Palácio and Quinta de Estoi were for a long period abandoned, a situation that caused a high state of degradation in the place. In 1893 José Francisco da Silva, a bourgeois from Estoi, resident in Beja, bought the property by public auction. In the year of purchase, restoration work begins, with architect and decorator Domingos António da Silva Meira being contracted to carry out the work. The Palace and Quinta de Estoi after the disappearance of José Francisco da Silva is subsequently purchased by the Faro City Council, which carries out the necessary works for the restoration of this historic site. More recently it has been the target of a new intervention, with contemporary characteristics, through an architectural project, adaptation and expansion for the function of Pousada. This case of study presents a a historical and biophysical analysis of the area of intervention. This work is achieved through the proposal of a Master Plan for Restoration with the objective of intervening on this historic site, in accordance with the principles and rules of intervention in historic gardens.
