Abstract

Στο νησί της Μήλου, στα παλιά μεταλλεία Μαγγανίου στο ακρωτήριο Βάνι, έχουν βρεθεί δύο σιδηρούχοι σχηματισμοί, οι οποίοι διαφέρουν στη στρωματογραφική τους θέση, στην ηλικία, στην ορυκτολογία και στη διατήρηση μικροαπολιθωμάτων, αλλά παρ΄όλα αυτά μπορεί να είναι σύγχρονα, μη μεταμορφωμένα ανάλογα πετρώματα των αρχαϊκών, τύπου Αλγκόμα, ταινιωτών σιδηρούχων σχηματισμών. Στην εργασία αυτή παρουσιάζονται στρωματογραφικές στήλες της περιοχής συνοδευόμενες από βασική ορυκτολογία. Μπορεί οι ταινιωτοί σιδηρούχοι σχηματισμοί να δημιουργούνται σε συγκεκριμένες γεωβιοχημικές συνθήκες, αλλά από περίοδο σε περίοδο και από μέρος σε μέρος κάποιοι από αυτούς τους παράγοντες είναι πιθανό να μεταβάλλονται μέσα σε κάποια πλαίσια. In Milos island, in the old Cape Vani Manganese mine, two Iron Formations have been found, that differ in spatial deposition, age, mineralogy and micro fossil preservation, but may nonetheless be modern, non-metamorphosed analogues of the Archean Algoma type Banded Iron Formations. In literature there is chemical and biological analysis information of these Iron Formations but neither spatial differentiation nor geological history has been suggested. In this thesis, stratigraphic columns from the main areas in CVSB are presented along with basic mineralogy. After field research and lab work has been conducted, it was found that the Micro-fossil Iron Formation (MFIF) comes in contact with the andesitic basement, with the dominant syngenetic minerals being quartz and hematite and epigenetic Mn-minerals. The Non micro-fossil Iron Formation (NFIF) counter to the MFIF was the semifinal lithophase that was deposited before emergence occurred. The NFIF is also ferruginous, same as the MFIF, but with a different expression of hydrothermal activity. It does not contain any preserved micro fossils, but a carboniferous material is observed following the hematite pellets/ spherical structures that form the Fe-rich bands. In the main body of the NFIF, neither Mn-minerals were found nor Mn-rich veins intruding the formation, but in its upper part, filling cavities in a duricrust, botryoidal Mn-minerals are present. Iron Formations therefore may be formed in a frame of certain geobiochemical conditions, but some of these forming factors may vary from period to period or from place to place.
